Nautilus Crashes File Browsing 100% CPU [SOLVED]

Arch Linux 64-bit Gnome desktop
kernel 2.6.36.2-1
libgnome 2.32.0-3
nautilus 2.32.2.1-1
nautilus-actions 3.0.3-1
nautilus settings tree view, icons
gconfig setting /apps/nautilus/preferences/always_use_location_entry [checked]
To reproduce:
1) open nautilus computer location
2) browse to /user/share directory
3) click to expand and show directory contents.
Nautilus will lock up and utilize 100% of one CPU for about 5 min.
This behavior is the same logged in as user or using gksu nautilus command as user.
Logging in as root results in normal nautilus operation.
Since root user has a normal functioning nautilus, Im suspecting a setting or config issue.
I have tried to uninstall nautilus, remove all my user ( .nautilus) files, etc. then reinstall.

During my search for a solution to this, I find very similar nautilus issues going back several years, but with no similar or clear fix.

Thanks wonder,
But I just manually downgraded this package yesterday to resolve a different nautilus issue......
My above issue has been present for weeks.
Edit:
Ok I did system upgrade.
The nautilus-actions issue is fixed in the new version, but my nautilus hanging for 5 min is still present.

  • Small Acrobat file causes 100% cpu usage with v. 7.09

    Using Acrobat professional 7.09
I have a small acrobat file (94k) that causes my cpu to peg at 100% I used acrobat professional to convert an eps file to a pdf file. Is there a general known issue that could be causing this?

    > Looking at the plot, you might want to consider trying to use a vector graphic in the future. It looks like a plot that you may have created in MATLAB or such. In that case, why not just print to the PDF.
I used matplotlib, which can generate png, eps, svg, or even pdf files. The pdf in question was converted by acrobat from eps, which has worked well for me in the past. I wish acrobat pro 7 could handle svg.

  • Video files use 100% CPU

I purchased and completely downloaded a few video files from iTunes. I do not have an iPod video, but was going to view them on my PC. When I play the completely downloaded files, the video is really jerky and my CPU usage is at 100%. The computer is an IBM Thinkpad 1.8GHz celeron with 512 MB RAM. This should be plenty fast to play video files. The videos are so bad they are unwatchable. Since I downloaded them to my laptop and they have DRM, I cannot transfer these files to another computer to play them. What is the point of being legal and paying for videos when I can't even use them.
I have uninstalled iTunes and Quicktime and then just installed Quicktime to play the files and CPU is still at 100% and video is still really jerky. I have no other programs running in the background and have shut down any unnecessary process, but still the video is unwatchable. If anyone has any ways to fix this, please let me know.

I can imagine a lot of things, none of them are useful.
I verified the disk and the protections. I had to boot into safe mode or whatever it is called in order to perform the repairs. No change ...
I have now also got a problem with the imklaunchagent which is sapping 100% of 1 CPU. This is some input framework for asian languages or some such useless rubbish. I have posted here about this as well. I am not alone apparently.
This Mavericks upgrade is proving very costly, my time is not free!

  • My sweet stable Imac7,1 + new Macbook Air Beachballs, needs SMC Resets, Browser 100 CPU...ideas?

    Hi Everyone,
Imac7,1 10.5 patched fully (OS / Security / Java /Flash ) has been working like a system should for the past few years. No reboots needed. Always on. I basically use it to watch video, play audio, nothing CPU intensive. I was Internet Connection Sharing to one netbook, but as of last week added a new Macbook Air OS X 10.7.
If not that night after buying the Air, or the day after... The Imac beachballs permanently if I'm playing video files or using the internet, and the only way to get it back is an SMC reset. Anything other than an SMC reset just gets me to the prelogin wheel spin.
I've turned off Internet Connection Sharing, switched users, ran Disk Repair (only permissions on some java folders needed fixing), tried Safe Mode, looked in the logs for obvious things, but no luck yet.
Finally got around to watching the Activity Monitor when Firefox was playing back some Flash video and I actually saw the CPU above 100. Killing the process saved me from doing another reset
Any ideas what I should try? OS upgrade? Flash downgrade?
Is there anyway to prevent applications from using that much CPU and automatically shutting it down when it does?
Also curious if verbose logins, without the SMC reset, would give me any information...
    Appreciate any suggestions. Thanks Appleworld.

    Hello,
See if the Disk is issuing any S.M.A.R.T errors in Disk Utility...
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=DiskUtility/10.5/en/duh1896.html
Open Activity Monitor in Applications>Utilities, select All Processes & sort on CPU%, any indications there?
How much RAM & free space do you have also, click on the Memory & Disk Usage Tabs.
Open Console in Utilities & see if there are any clues or repeating messages when this happens.
In the Memory tab, are there a lot of Pageouts?

  • [Solved] arch crashing when browsing files

Seem to be having a strange problem of crashing when browsing files via the built in file manger of mate desktop. I say strange because it works ok if browsing via an app like pluma
Some times it freezes before hand. It takes some seconds to happen but if I mount my extra drive it crashes all most right away.
Just to say I got one other system up and running fine with the only difference being ram and drive sizes.
Do anyone know what it could be?
    Last edited by taylord1984 (2013-05-27 15:36:26)

Sorry about late reply. Forgot all about posting this.
It would seem it was a mobo fault. There was one other difference between the systems and that was the one that kept crashing had an ati card. I removed that card to boot from the igpu system wouldn't boot at all. Thought it got to be cpu or ram so did some swapping about to find it was in fact a fault mobo. I still think it's an odd one but I'm no expert lol
Thanks opt1mus for your time in responding.

  • CF9 CPU at 100%. Moved to new CF11 server and copied files over and it's still at 100% CPU almost immediately on new server

Our web server is stuck at 100% CPU.  Three days ago we were on CF9 and started running into this problem until the server crashed and wasn't salvageable.  Luckily we had a fresh Windows 2008 Server R2 ready to go with a fresh copy of CF11 on it.  I copied all the website files over and we were back up and running.  A day later the CPU is back to 100% on the new CF11 Windows 2008R2 server.  I also updated CF11 to the latest update 3 that was just released.
If I turn off the CF service the CPU usage goes back to normal.  If I turn CF back on, the CPU goes back to 100% within like 5 seconds.  So it doesn't seem like some slow running page or anything that eventually eats up all the memory or whatever.  I'm not an expert at looking at the logs, but I don't see anything too out of the ordinary.  The one thing that looks strange to me is I see this line over and over.
    Dec 12, 2014 11:28:41 AM Information [ajp-bio-8014-exec-59] - Starting HTTP request {URL='http://zzen1wbudopwg.nchyt.com/encfm/en0024-ssj5iway6wvg/cbeim94a1s2kebu.php?do=194', method='get'}
That line makes me think we got hacked somehow, but it's hard to know.
I did up my JVM heap size and max size to 1024MB.  We have 4GB of memory.  And i changed teh JVM arguments to what's below based on a forum post.  Nothing seems to help.
    -server -XX:PermSize=192m -XX:MaxPermSize=192m -XX:+UseParallelGC -Xbatch -Dcoldfusion.home={application.home} -Dorg.eclipse.jetty.util.log.class=org.eclipse.jetty.util.log.JavaUtilLog -Duser.language=en -Dcoldfusion.rootDir={application.home} -Dcoldfusion.libPath={application.home}/lib -Dorg.apache.coyote.USE_CUSTOM_STATUS_MSG_IN_HEADER=true -Dcoldfusion.jsafe.defaultalgo=FIPS186Random
Any additional ideas on how to debug this or what to look at?  Thanks!

Thanks Charlie for your insight.  I searched everywhere to find a cfhttp request that was causing the issue, but couldn't find it.  I did find some unusual files that were loaded though that I know we didn't put there.  I did a search and found this link that shows the code.  Coldfusion CFIDE bitcoin mining exploit – PHP involved… | code-complete.com and that you mention in your article too.  I don't see any of the executables running or files that were mentioned though.  I found that code in 8 different spots though and removed them.  Maybe our old server had the executables and hacked files on them.  Hard to know as it won't boot up anymore!
I think I did possibly isolate the HTTP request {URL='http://zzen1wbudopwg.nchyt.com/encfm/en0024-ssj5iway6wvg/cbeim94a1s2kebu.php?do=218', method='get'} in the http.log file to a certain site in IIS though.  And it wasn't our main site.  I turn off this website in IIS and it appears the weird request goes away.  I turn the site back on and it starts to re-appear.  It doesn't always load constantly so it's a little hard to tell.  This site is pretty small.  I went through each file on the site and did find one file that did appear to be hacked.  It wasn't coldfusion code though.  Just some html links.  I removed it.  That's all I could find.  No cfhttp calls or anything else.
We re-installed Coldfusion 11 on Friday as well and upgraded to Update 3.  It doesn't stay locked at 100% as much right now, but it being over the weekend we don't get much traffic.  Monday will be the real test.  I think I will leave that smaller site turned off for now and see how things perform.  I'm doing a full virus scan for the heck of it overnight too.  Don't really expect it to find anything though. I also turned on advanced logging in IIS 7.5 and don't see anything out of the ordinary.  I made sure client variables weren't in the registry either.
Here's a part of the http.log file when I turn the IIS site on.  I turn the site off and it stops popping up in the logs.

  • ReportCrash 100% cpu because cups is crashing

My C2D iMac is at 100% CPU as I type this.  I'm getting loads of crash reports.  I have a cups process and 22 cups-driverd processes and more are created every few minutes.  I've deleted my printers (all three are network printers) thinking that I'd just re-add them and that would fix it.  I copied my /etc/cupsd/cupsd.conf to cupsd.conf.old and copied the cupsd.conf.default file on top of the cupsd.conf I had originally.  Here's what's different:

    Any ideas?  Thanks in advance.
I might have added the AirPrintHacktivator thing.  I also might have added it to my MBP too which is not having this problem.

I renamed the /System/Library/Printers/PPDs directory.  It seems to only contain LaserWriter PPDs.  I was using one of the color ones to talk to a Canon Color Laser unit.  Perhaps that was the one?

  • All programs using 100% CPU, freezing, crashing, -10810, -600, and -1712 errors

Okay, so. I have a Macbook Pro from December 2012, a little over a year old.
    Version 10.9.1, running Mavericks
Processor 2.4 GHz Intel Core i7
    Memory 8 GB
    Startup Disk - Macintosh HD
I can send more info if I need to. I'm a graphic designer using Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign usually simultaneously, as well as Spotify, Messages, Sparrow (mail), Stickies, Tweetdeck, and Evernote. I also use a wireless mouse, drawing tablet, and second screen. This has never been a problem (I mean, my old computer had 4 GB memory and handled these programs just fine, except for Final Cut Pro 7) up until recently.
For the last two months, my computer has been seriously out of whack.
I'm constantly having to refresh finder
Every time I open Google Chrome, all of my extentions crash immediately and any website I try to go to is extremely sluggish (but Safari works)
    The dock freezes
    Constant error messages: 1712, 10810, 600
    Audio fails randomly
Overall, the problem seems to be that I can't do more than one thing at a time -- I can't take a screenshot if more than two programs are open, I can't open DMG files, I can't open Spotify if any Creative Suite program is open. I've been watching the activity monitor, and it seems like each program is trying to use 100% CPU, which doesn't seem right. I have to close every program to work in Photoshop, which makes me miss calls and emails.
I've tried restarting in safe mode, verifiyng the disk and repairing permissions, I used time capsule to restore to a time before it was happening, and restored my user profile in Chrome. I'm at my complete wit's end trying to figure this out! I feel like my next step is to just reinstall my OS completely, but that would be a major setback for getting my work done, and I'm not even sure that would work.
I've looked on other forums and it seems like the Mail app typically causes problems, but I don't even use it, I use Sparrow.
    PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE HELP

    Launch error -10810 in Mavericks
I have the same issue since a couple of days. Nothing that I found in the community (rebuilding launch info using Onyx or manually deleting the apple.com-launch prefs) has helped me so far. Only some apps are affected (PasswordWallet 4.7.4 among them).
I can launch it once and it will run fine as long as it’s open. Next time it refuses to open displaying the error -10810 message instead. I trash the app and use a fresh one off the vendor’s dmg file I downloaded and the sequence repeats.

  • Internet browsing uses 100% cpu

    Hello everybody.
This situation has driven me crazy the last 4 months and till now i have not figure it out.
Everytime i have a video streaming in my computer, CPU usage goes to 100%. It happens every time, either using internet explorer or Firefox or Google chrome. Even when i have a skype video call or a gtalk video call. Some description of each one:
Using internet explorer: While i am watching a youtube video, CPU limits up to 100% after 1 minute or sometime 5 minutes. I am not able to watch a 15min video. Internet explorer process uses 100%CPU. When i kill it via task manager, another instance of IE
appears with the same CPU usage. I also kill it and then 4 or 5 instances of rundll32.exe appear consuming 100CPU. If i kill them, explorer.exe uses 100% of cpu. If i do nothing and just wait, CPU is 100% for two hours. If i just kill only IE instances, taskmngr.exe
is consuming 40-50% of CPU for 1-2 minutes, then other processes like conhost or csrss consumes the same amount of CPU and after 4-5 minutes everything comes back to normal. That's the story everytime i use IE 11.0.9600.16518
Using Firefox: While video streaming, flash player process consumes all CPU. When i kill it, the same behaviour described above occurs.
Using Google Chrome: When i run it, 5-6 instances of google chrome appear in task manager and after some time this browser also hungs with 100CPU.
All above are also happening while i run Skype either i have a video call or just text messaging. Sometimes svchost is 25-30 % and system hungs.
Operating system is Windows 7 home premium 64bit with SP1, my graphics card is NVidia Gforce GT 230M (latest drivers 20% when these situations occur, my system is extremely slow and whatever i do, it limits up CPU usage.
Any assistance is acceptable.  Thanks for the patience.

    Hi,
First, I would suggest that you reduce the hardware acceleration on the computer and check if it helps.
    a. Open Screen Resolution by clicking the Start button, clicking Control Panel, and then, under Appearance and Personalization, clicking Adjust screen resolution.
    b. Click Advanced Settings, click the Troubleshoot tab, and then click Change settings.
    c. Note that some video card drivers do not permit you to change settings.
    d. Move the Hardware acceleration slider toward None to reduce or turn off video hardware acceleration.
This issue can be caused by confliction from one of the background programs or add-ons.
You may use Process explorer as Milos mentioned to find the root cause to fix the issue:
    Process explorer:
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb896653.aspx
You can follow the references below to troubleshoot the issue:
    1. 3RD part app: Remove to check the issue
    2. Drivers: Update or install compatible version
    3. System process/service: Upload the log file for analyzing.
I also would like to suggest you use Windows Performance Recorder to check the issue:
Troubleshooting Windows Performance Issues Using the Windows Performance Recorder

To diagnose HDD and RAM,  I would like to suggest you contact your computer vender.
    Hope it helps.

  • How to add a new right-click menu entry in Nautilus file browser?

I want to add a couple of new context menu entries to Nautilus File Browser.
So when I e.g. right-click in View Pane on a file "foobar.conf" an menu entry "edit with gedit" should appear (among the other default entries).
When clicked the file "foobar.conf" should be passed to gedit (and gedit editor opened).
    How can I achieve this?
Under Ubuntu there are nautilus-actions but when I try to install them in Solaris with
    pkg install nautilus-actions
then this package is not found.
How else can I create my own context menues?
I would appreciate to have one script with all my context menus, which when run add them all in one step.

To manage selected files or directories, you can use specific Nautilus variables like NAUTILUS_SCRIPT_SELECTED_FILE_PATHS.

  • File browser crashes frequently during Open/Save

My late-2011 15" MBP running Mavericks recently started exhibiting a new bug.
In many applications (Postbox, IDLE, PhotoShop CS5, Lightroom, etc) the file browser crashes almost (but not quite) every time it's used.
If I choose > File > Open and start navigating the directory tree, it crashes the application (sometimes showing a generic error message, sometimes just quitting, depending on the application). If I open a Recent document the problem doesn't occur, but if I then try to > File > Save As and navigate the directory tree, it recurs.
This doesn't happen all the time, but once it's started to occur it continues until I reboot.
I've installed a 3rd-party SSD in the primary drive bay, and the standard Apple HDD in an Optibay. But I made this change a while ago and the problem is only new. I'm also running Windows 7 via a Parallels VB (and also Bootcamp) but the problem also occurs even if I don't boot up the VM.
I can attach a crash report if that's any use. I haven't seen any similar problems reported online.
    Thanks for any advice,
    Steve

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
    Step 1
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Enter the name of the crashed application or process in the Filter text field. Select the messages from the time of the last crash, if any. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message (command-V).
When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.
    Step 2
In the Console window, look under User Diagnostic Reports for crash reports related to the crashed process. The report name starts with the name of the process, and ends with ".crash". Select the most recent report and post the entire contents — again, the text, not a screenshot. In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.) Please don’t post other kinds of diagnostic report — they're very long and not helpful.

  • 100% CPU spike opening file

    Hi there,
I'm using JDev 10.1.3.0.4(SU4) under Windows 2000, configured to use the default 512MB of memory. When I attempt to load one of several files JDev spikes to 100% CPU utilization, very reproducibly (I've been restarting JDeveloper all afternoon trying to work around the problem), even when I've freshly rebooted and all extensions have been turned off!
    The file is as so:
    -- begin
    package blah;
    import blah;
    public class bleh implements blah
    public bleh()
    --end
If I edit the file from DOS and add a linefeed before the closing brace, the file loads fine but one of its brethren that's just like it continues not to load. I've turned many switches on and off this afternoon -- is there something I can do not to have to discover what files need hand-tweaking by having to restart the whole thing?
    thanks,
    James
PS the actual file has normal indentation not showing up here

Yesterday I was close, today I found the reason. IT'S SO F***ING STUPID. It's actually another bug, which is only fixed in mustang:
    http://bugs.sun.com/bugdatabase/view_bug.do?bug_id=6317789
For some reason I indeed had a shortcut on my desktop to the desktop itself. We have some document management system where you can checkin and checkout documents, and I configured it so to check them out to the desktop, and apparently that program created a shortcut on my desktop to the checkout folder!
Well, anyway, I have all the latestest security patches and drivers now - and also Java is working again. Can I now assign the duke dollars to myselfi? :-)

  • [SOLVED] mandb hangs, taking 100% CPU

I have a VPS running Arch (limited to kernel 3.9.4-1 by the provider). The system was unceremoniously rebooted last night due to a power outage at their facility. When it came back up, the mandb process being run by cron was taking 100% of the CPU and had been running for ~10 hours by the time I noticed it.
I eventually killed the mandb process and re-tried it manually with debugging turned on: `mandb -d`. It appears that processing stops at /usr/share/man/man5/core.5.gz (this is the last output I see, even if I leave it running for an hour or two). Even after the output stops, it is still taking 100% CPU. Anyone have any ideas or other things to try debugging it? I'm all out.

    I re-installed man-pages with `pacman -S man-pages` and then received the following messages:
Purging old database entries in /usr/share/man...
    Processing manual pages under /usr/share/man...
Updating index cache for path `/usr/share/man/man2'. Wait...mandb: bad fetch on multi key alarm 2
    mandb: index cache /var/cache/man/3354 corrupt
    Then, after running
    mandb -c
subsequent calls to `mandb` executed successfully. Problem solved. I guess maybe mandb was running when the power outage occurred, corrupting the man index cache... makes me wonder what else got corrupted that I haven't noticed yet.

  • [Solved (partially)] 100% CPU for Reader

Here is a detailed description why Reader ends up using 100% CPU (output taken from strace, unimportant lines removed):
    socket(PF_INET, SOCK_STREAM, IPPROTO_TCP) = 12
    connect(12, {sa_family=AF_INET, sin_port=htons(80), sin_addr=inet_addr("192.150.8.100")}, 16) = -1 EINPROGRESS (Operation now in progress)
    poll([{fd=3, events=POLLIN}, {fd=12, events=POLLOUT}], 2, 0) = 0 (Timeout)
    poll([{fd=3, events=POLLIN}, {fd=12, events=POLLOUT}], 2, 15) = 0 (Timeout)
until here, everything is fine. Reader polls for events on the socket descriptors with a timeout of 15ms.
I our case, Reader is running on a Kiosk system, so connection to most hosts are forbidden, including pmupsw.adobe.com ("192.150.8.100"). So after some time the connection fails.
    poll([{fd=3, events=POLLIN}, {fd=12, events=POLLOUT}], 2, 13) = 1 ([{fd=12, revents=POLLERR|POLLHUP}])
Unfortunately, now the poll() returns immediately. Reader does not handle the POLLERR, so it ends up polling the socket in a tight loop.

Running Ubuntu 10.04 LTS on HP6715 notebook. I had the 100% cpu utilization issue. I changed the adobe proxy setting from direct connect to manual. I entered the proxy settings at my company. This fixed the issue. It would be nice if adobe could use the system proxy settings.
    This issue was documented here
    http://blogs.adobe.com/acroread/2008/04/100_cpu_utilization_problem.html
