  • Changing the name of the computer

Hey all, where do you go to change the name of the computer? I want to know bc when i go to the system profiler theres a (2) behind the name of that i have chosen. I dont know where this (2) came from and i would like to change it.
    Thanks!

Go to System Preferences > Sharing. The name of your computer is in a box at the top of the preferences panel. Click on the edit button to change the name.
If the choices in the Sharing preferences are grayed out, you will need to click on the padlock in the lower left corner and enter your password.
    Hope this helps.

  • My iphone is recognized as my wife's iphone by my computer. I believe this is preventing my wife from making necessary changes to her phone. Any thoughts on how to change the name on the computer?

A few weeks back, I connected my wife's iphone to my computer to download an update. Since that time, wheneve I connect my phone, the computer recognizes it as hers. ITunes correctly identifies the phone, but the computer does not. Is there any way to change the name with the computer. I canot locate any way to do this.
    Thanks.

i suspect that this problem is under windows, like mine, the solution was go to start/run/regedit and then look for the name that you want to change, for example, if your wife's name is susan, use the search option in regedit to look for every possible susan word you find and then chage susan for pete, if pete is your name. Only the Susans related to the iphone name, dont change everything with susan in it, is easy to know wich one is related to the iphone name, don't worry. This procedure worked for me. good luck

  • HT3275 What if my error message is the following:  The backup disk image "/Volumes/********'s Time Capsul/****'s MacBook Pro.sparsebundle" is already in use. (I have redacted the name of the computer with asterixes)

What if my error message is the following:  The backup disk image “/Volumes/********'s Time Capsul/****’s MacBook Pro.sparsebundle” is already in use. (I have redacted the name of the computer with asterixes)

    This is a complex procedure.
Pull the power cord from the back of the Time Capsule
    Wait a minute or two
Plug the power cord back in to the back of the Time Capsule
This will fix the issue 98% of the time. If you are in the unlucky 2% category, more help is here from Pondini, the Time Machine guru:
The Backup disk image ... sparsebundle ... is already in use.

  • Changing the name of the computer and the effect on Time Machine?

I have a new iMac and used my MacBook Pro's Time Machine backup to migrate over. Everything works fine and the entire system, settings, everything are just like on my MBP, plus whatever was needed to make the wireless kb and mouse work. So that's all fine.
The only thing is, the name of the computer is also DougMacBookPro.
I have a 1TB drive I freshly formatted for Time Machine backups just for this new machine. The old backup on a portable USB drive still exists for when my MBP comes back from repairs (portable Time Machine for travel).
Anyway, to my question. In the 1TB new Time Machine drive, the name of the backup folder is Backups.backupdb > DougMacBookPro.
I probably should have changed the name of the computer prior to doing my first Time Machine backup. And I can always start over since I only have half a day of backups anyway.
But my question is, what happens if I change my computer name now, after Time Machine has already started backing up? Will it rename the folder? Will it create a whole new folder, thus wasting all the space from the initial backup?
    Thanks,
    doug

Sorry. I see this question has been answered elsewhere and that TM is clever enough to automatically change the backup folder name.
    Thanks,
    doug

  • When I installed Mountain Lion it asked the name of my computer. I was in such a hurry that I now have a typo. How can I go back and change the name of the computer?

How do I change the name of my computer?

One area that this appears is on Facebook where it lists the number of Recognized Devices. There are six devices which include iPad and iPhone. These items are grayed and you are unable to change. Also on my iphone it lists the computer name. This name is different from name of my computer. It's what I signed in as when I installed the Mountain Lion upgrade. I know I'm not doing a good job of explaining this. I have searched everywhere on my computer that I can think of and cannot locate where this is used. Any suggestions are appreciated.

  • When i delete an audio book from my computer it does not delete the book from my Iphone. it seems to be deleting the name from the computer but not the content. this has just started happening since the last itune progam updated. the result is i have

I record audio books from my library onto my old iPhone. I download the book from Overdrive to my computer. I connect the Iphone to the computer and transfer the audio-book to the iPhone.  When I am done listening to the book i delete it from the iPhone by connecting it to the computer and doing a manual sync. this worked fine until the last i-tunes update on my computer. Now when the iPhone is connected and i tell the computer to delete a book it is only deleting the name of the book on the computer it is not deleting the book from the phone. The next time I connect the phone to the computer the program does not show the book in the phone but it is still in the phone.  I have no more room on my phone to get any new books on it.
Does anyone know how to fix this? Please

You are correct.  Syncing should transfer any purchased media, including videos, from your device to your iTunes library provided your computer is authorized for the Apple ID used to make these purchases.  You mentioned that you have uninstalled iTunes before, but if you didn't follow this guide exactly, uninstalling iTunes and all of its components in the order specified, it may not have been successful so you should try again:  Windows XP or Windows Vista/7.

  • Name of the computer is constantly changing

I have a mac Pro 2010 on a network in which I have a macbook, a macbook pro and an airport Express all connected by wifi to the same base station. The problem is that I frequently get in the Mac Pro the warning that another computer is using the name Mac Pro ABC and this has been changed by Mac Pro ABC (2), for example.
I have reviewed the names of all the devices on your network and their configurations and it keeps coming.
    What can I do?
    Thank you.

    Thank you Linc.
I haven't two simultaneous connections to the same local network, is only connected by wifi.
However, I have a device that communicates with my Mac Pro via an ethernet port. It is a Lexicon PCM92 sound effects processor (http://www.lexiconpro.com//en-US/products/pcm92#downloads).
LINC, may relationship have this problem with my other discussion: https://discussions.apple.com/message/18870937#18870937 ?

  • Accessing the name of the computer

My computer is called chris1, is there a way I can access this information through java?
    Thanks

    OK thanks,
also, how can I determine my IP address that over users can use to connect to over the internet?
The only way I can think of doing is connecting to a website like http://www.whatismyipaddress.com/ and parsing out the IP address, are there any methods which can tell me the IP automatically?

  • How to change the computer name

I need to change the computer name but after this I cannot access to the historical data (printing alarms).
I have already changed the settings in Options->System and restarted the system.
With MAX 3.0 I can see that all the alarm records are stored with the old computer name \\computer name\process\....
How can I do to read the old alarms with the new computer name?
    Thank you
    Michael

    Hi,
When you change the computer name in Options>>System, you are not changing the name of the computer. Rather, you are telling Lookout to log to either a remote or local system. Here are the specifics:
    1. Computer Name: Name you want the traces to appear with (\\computer_name\process\...)
    2. Default Computer: Computer you want to log to. If the name listed here is different than your computer's name (as seen by Windows), then it will attempt to log directly to that remote machine.
    3. Default Path: Directory on either your local or remote machine that you want to log to.
To change the name of your local computer, you will need to do that in Windows. If you have WinXP, you can do this by right-clicking on My Computer and selecting Computer Name.
    Go
    od Luck
    Mike

  • My password only works to log into the computer, but not to make admin changes, even though I am the admin account on the computer.  This happened after I tried to change the computer's name. Is there any way to fix this?

Bought my laptop off my room mate and he had master reset it to default.  This still left his name as the computer name and I wanted to change that.  Tried to rename it under the advanced changes section, and now it isn't recognizing my password for anything more than logging in.  I can't unlock the settings to make further changes (or change it back).  I have had my room mate try all of his old passwords and usernames, to no avail.  Is there a way to reset this?  It's also not letting me wipe the drive and start fresh again because, alas, I don't have access without the password.  Any advice would be very helpful.  Thank you!

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Click the Clear Display icon in the toolbar. Then try the action that you're having trouble with again. Select any messages that appear in the Console window. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message (command-V).
When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.

  • How can I change the name of a computer I'm getting rid of?

How can I change the name of the computer to my granddaughter's name? It's now called "My name" G5 iMac. I would also like to delete that computer icon in my Devices on my MacbookPro.

I guess my reply to these questions in your other topic did not help?
The name of the computer is in System Preferences Sharing pane.
If something appears under DEVICES in a Finder window sidebar, you can click hold on it and drag it off the sidebar. If it appears under SHARED, it should no longer appear there once if that iMac is no longer on your local network, or if you turn off its shared services in the Sharing pane.

  • Changing the Computer Name

How do I change the name of the computer without doing a reinstall?
Back story - my dad had a iMac G3 that died on him after 10+ years. We were able to make the internal hard drive into an external and transfer all his files into a user account for him on my iMac G5. He was not set up as an admin, just a standard account but we did use Migration Assistant so he would still have all his preferences and such.
He recently bought a MacBook, white, and we used firewire transfer to transfer only his account to the MacBook. Everything transfered fine, no complaints.
But just now I was messing around with the MacBook and looked at Front Row and that's where I saw that his MacBook is labeled as my iMac G5.
So how do I change it from Blank Blank's iMac G5 to Blank Blank's MacBook?
The short name is fine since it's the same user account that he's had since his iMac G3, it's just the computer name.

Open Sharing preferences. Change it in the field labeled "Computer Name."
