File browser crashes frequently during Open/Save

My late-2011 15" MBP running Mavericks recently started exhibiting a new bug.
In many applications (Postbox, IDLE, PhotoShop CS5, Lightroom, etc) the file browser crashes almost (but not quite) every time it's used.
If I choose > File > Open and start navigating the directory tree, it crashes the application (sometimes showing a generic error message, sometimes just quitting, depending on the application). If I open a Recent document the problem doesn't occur, but if I then try to > File > Save As and navigate the directory tree, it recurs.
This doesn't happen all the time, but once it's started to occur it continues until I reboot.
I've installed a 3rd-party SSD in the primary drive bay, and the standard Apple HDD in an Optibay. But I made this change a while ago and the problem is only new. I'm also running Windows 7 via a Parallels VB (and also Bootcamp) but the problem also occurs even if I don't boot up the VM.
I can attach a crash report if that's any use. I haven't seen any similar problems reported online.
Thanks for any advice,
Steve

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Step 1
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar.
Enter the name of the crashed application or process in the Filter text field. Select the messages from the time of the last crash, if any. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message (command-V).
When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.
Step 2
In the Console window, look under User Diagnostic Reports for crash reports related to the crashed process. The report name starts with the name of the process, and ends with ".crash". Select the most recent report and post the entire contents — again, the text, not a screenshot. In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.) Please don’t post other kinds of diagnostic report — they're very long and not helpful.

  • File browser crashes every time browsing directories within Thunderbird and Acrobat Reader

    Hello,
I am experiencing a bug. Every time I try to browse directories within application (ex. adding an attachement in Thunderbird, or Savin As within Acrobat Reader), that file borwser crashes.
But for Microsoft Word, which seems to use other module for Saving (I am assuming that, becouse that "save as"  window looks different), there is no such problem.
Anybody else is experiencing such crashes?
    Cheers,

  • File direct from database to open/save, without tempfile

    Hello, everyone.
I've got the file uploading to the database, and that is working most excellent.
How do I get it to open/save immediately without first using CFFILE action="write" to save it to a server folder, first?
    I'm using the following code:
    <cfcontent variable="#getFile.contents#" reset="true"><!--- binary data for file, pulled from "varbinary(max)" --->
    <cfheader name="content-disposition" value="attachment;filename=#getFile.fileName#">
    <cfheader name="content-type" value="application/octet-stream">
    <cfoutput>#toString(getFile.contents)#</cfoutput>
    <cfabort>
.. but all this does is open a dialogue asking the user to either open or save the CFM file calling it, but the .cfm is replaced with .ZIP.
The files are not all going to be the same MIMEtype - some will be Word documents, some Excel documents, some PowerPoint documents, and some PDF documents.
    ^_^

Filetypes that can be uploaded into the database are PDF, PPT, DOC/DOCX, and XLS/XLSX (PDF, PowerPoint, Word, Excel).  I am setting the MIMEtype by using a CFC I built that creates an array of extensions and the MIMEtypes they are associated with (for example, if the filename ends in .DOCX, the array returns a MIMEtype of "application/vnd.openxmlformats-officedocument.wordprocessingml.document"; if the filename ends in .DOC, the array returns a MIMEtype of "application/msword"; if the filename ends in .PDF, the array returns a MIMEtype of "application/pdf".  The CFCONTENT tag is then set for that type.)
This is an internal web app that cannot be accessed outside of this network.  Every computer that has access to it has Office 2007 installed, as well as Adobe Reader, so when given the option to open or save, the "open" is always associated with the proprietary application (.xls is always given an option for Microsoft Excel; .docx is always given an option for Microsoft Word; etc.)
Theoretically, once the binary of the Excel/Word/PowerPoint/PDF file is stored in the database, I should be able to read that binary data, give it the CFCONTENT and CFHEADER tags that it needs, and it should download and save, or open in the native application (this much is working.)  What is confusing me is why the applications feel that the files are corrupted and need to be recovered.  The file is being insert as binary, being retrieved as binary.  What _could_ cause the data to be misconstrued as corrupted?  I'm _not_ using TRIM for insert or select, or any kind of encoding/decoding.

  • Intel macs consistently crash in AFP open/save dialog

    Hi.
We are experiencing a problem whereas we cannot open or save any documents on our intel macs from the 10.4.8 xserve. The intel macs will crash the application trying to open or save, even while just browsing the directory structure on the server from within the open or save dialog boxes. The shares are mounted with AFP. When mounting with SMB, things are better in that open and save will work, but printing now crashes the intel macs.
If we copy the files on to the intel mac and open them locally, everything is fine. However, such is the collaboration on projects in my company that we must have work with the files on the server, lest everything become a mess. I have found that it is while browsing folders on the server that contain old files with resource-forks that this happens. We cannot remove these files, as they are often the basis for our work. (for instance, we convert old quark files to indesign).
The trouble is: This is consistent behaviour for all our new intel macs. The trouble apps are MS Office 2004 and Adobe CS2, though there could be others, I have not tested. Also, the problem can be reproduced on other xserves with folders with resource forks in them and intel macs and AFP-file sharing.
I cannot possibly be the only one experiencing this? Has anyone else been through this and found a solution?
The server is an xServe g4 with 10.4.8

I have not had any crashes locally when browsing a fileshare on an Intel Xserve running 10.4.8 , however the Standard Operating Procedure there is not to work directly off the server (no network home dirs either).
Quark doesn't support it (not unless you use QPS), nor does Adobe (only if you use VersionCue or one other of their products), they don't.
I saw someone crash the AFP server process (when the server was a different machine, running an earlier version of 10.4 server) when ignoring the SOP and trying to save directly to the fileshare using Office v. X. A reinstall of the application applying all updates fixed that, but so did following the SOP.
Issues with Office apps & trying to work directly off a fileshare have long plagued many people.
I am not surprised at all that trying to open or save directly off a fileshare, using Office which will be running under Rosetta, could cause even more problems.
Please understand that you will be pursuing workarounds at best.
Out of many hints others have given for this issue, one was: make sure the group listed for the .TemporaryItems has r+w permission(s).
Make sure your user is in that group.
    chmod 1770 .TemporaryItems
Also check your Word prefs and be sure that autosave is saving to a local directory on your own machine.

  • Can't See Indesign File, It Crashes, I Re-open It and It Works

When I open my large Indesign file, everything appears normally except I have a black screen where the document should display. The document tab exists as does the thumbnail view of all the pages, etc, but no actual document. When I try to close, Indesign crashes. When I re-open, the file opens fine and I can see everything as normal. This pattern of black screen - crashing - reponing to normal repeats itself over and over.
I'm on a Windows machine running the most recent version of Indesign CC.
I've tried "save as" to a new file name - same problem. I just go off the phone with Adobe support and they messed around, trashing my preferences and creating a new user account. The new administrator account kind of worked but I still got the problem to persist - once.
Before this all started, I was moving files around and did not move a "lock" file with the main file from one of the crashes. I wonder if this could be related? Any ideas?

    More information:
This problem persists with other large Indesign documents of mine. It appears that the Indesign files themselves are not corrupt.
This problem definitely persists in the "Administrator" user account that was created with Adobe's support. So, switching to a new user did not help.
At the same time, I'm experiencing problems with Creative Cloud file storage, where I used to store some of the files associated with this document. However, it just doesn't feel like the two problems should be related.
What is Indesign doing??? Any advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

  • My Indesign CS4 crashes when I open it, ow when I am exporting my work on my pc

I have had this issue now for a week and I am stuck after browsing for a solution on this online, basically I run a windows XP pro pc,  and my InDesign was working just fine untill last week, sometimes when i open a file  it crashes, sometimes it opens fine and crashes, sometimes it when i am exporting to pdf it crashes.  I am reli stuck as to what I can do, I have tried reinstall, I have tried to copy my Indesign files from my laptop to my desktop but still not working. I have tried to delete the preferences as well but no luck.
What else can be done, can anyone help pls.
    patrickatmediaworkxdotcodotuk
    Kind regards

Are you opening from Windows Explorer, i.e., double clicking the file in Explorer to open it.
Is it happening with every file or just one file?
Try opening it through InDesign rather than through Explorer
    Try resetting your preferences http://www.creativetechs.com/tips/quicktips_64-one.html
Try exporting that file to a .inx http://indesignsecrets.com/indesign-interchange-format-inx.php

  • Illustrator CC crashing when trying to save .eps

    Hi,
I'm trying to save a basic logo file that i have created, every time i try to save as an .eps file illustrator crashes and doesn't save.
I can save it as an .ai no problem, i don't think its something specific to the file as it crashes when trying to save other files as an .eps.
I've cleared my .pref file but that didn't help—it still crashes. I'm running OSX 10.9.3 and i don't have another version of illustrator installed.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks

Thanks for your reply however it doesn't really solve the original question. I am fully aware of the limitations of .eps in fact one of the reasons logo's are usually sent as eps is because it flattens the file, therefore limits the ability of third parties down the production line to change the logo. Also current clients and printers do still specifically request an eps, hence the original question.

  • Applications Crash After Use Of Open/Save/Pick File or Folder Dialog

    Hi, all.
This has been a problem since I installed 10.6 (the day it was released).
The 10.6.1 helped somewhat, but this is still a real problem.
    I'll describe what happnes:
I'll be in a program (any program: MS Word, TextEdit, Safari, anything) and I'll use any of the following dialogs:
    -Open
    -Save Pick
    --a-file
    -Pick-a-folder
    or anything like that.
Then, never during the time I'm using the dialog, always soon (there's often a delay of a few seconds) afterward, I'll get a message saying that the program quit unexpectedly. It says that an error report has been sent, and gives me the option the reopen the program or ignore the quit. (Except MS Word; it has it's own error reporting system).
Now, this is a BAD program because it happens when I save something.
It is important for me to note that this doesn't happen all the time. Some programs seem more stable than others, and some file formats (the one I select) stabler than others. Also, it seems that (at least with Safari) I can do things to reduce the likelihood of this crash happening. Sometimes opening using Rosetta helps. Sometimes 64-Bit helps. Sometimes disabling the cache helps.
    It all seems pretty random.
Bottom line: this is REALLY annoying, especially when it occurs after use of the save dialog. Apple needs to fix this.
Is there a way for me to fix this myself?
Apple Hardware Test comes out clean. No problems with my startup disk, as far as I know.
It is nice to have QuickLook available in these dialogs, but if that's what's causing the problem, it'd be worth it to me to disable it. Any way to do that, just to try?
    Anyone have any other ideas?
    Thanks!
    -Nate

Thanks for the reply and info!
All right, so I found crash reports for each recent such crash.
Here's the most recent one, caused by either an open or a save (I can't remember which) dialog. I think I clicked Cancel on that dialog, but it crashed anyway. Here's the part of the log you mentioned (Sorry for the links in that, they aren't supposed to be there, and I sure didn't make them myself):

  • CS4 crashes when trying to open/save files

when i try to open or save a file, cs4 crashes i cant figure out what to do!! plz help me. thanx

Might be a long shot but perhaps worth trying -- check the display driver.  I've encountered occasional crashes only on File > Open.   Crash occurs when PS is reading and opening the selected file.  Then when next I open PS CS4 after the crash I get a message "Photoshop has encountered a problem with the display driver, and has temporarily disabled GPU enhancements."
But this is on an older system that does not have GPU, and GPU enhancements were never enabled in preferences.  Should I try to enable GPU enhancements, the mouseover in Preferences > Performance for GPU settings properly reports that graphics hardware acceleration is unavailable.  When I go to this same Preferences > Performance panel on the first PS launch after the crash, it reports that Photoshop has disabled GPU.
This is on XP SP3 system, version4 11.0.1.  I do not know if this would be related to the OP's reported problem.  I do have a drwtsn32.log and dump if it would be of use.
