Nautilus in Openbox session

Hello everyone,
In the past I have used Nautilus as my file manager in an Openbox session. After I updated today, Nautilus no longer starts because:
"libnotify-WARNING **: Failed to connect to proxy
Segmentation fault"
I did some googling for the issue. The only thing I found so far was at Gentoo mentioning the need to load the gnome-settings-daemon. I tried to load gnome-settings-daemon, but that didn't help me (it didn't load completely because a failure to grab keys).
Is it possible now in Gnome3 to use Nautilus with Openbox session?
Can anyone give me any pointers?

Nautilus apparently now depends on gnome-icon-theme and, if you want it to look pretty, gnome-themes-standard; the latter is optional, the former is not and will cause a seg fault.
Edit: Also, to clear up the libnotify error:
$ sudo pacman -S notification-daemon
Add to .xinitrc or preferred startup script:
/usr/lib/notification-daemon-1.0/notification-daemon &

  • Openbox and ck-launch-session

Hey guys, I have a problem with automounting in Openbox.
It tried using "ck-launch-session openbox-session" in my xinitrc, but that doesn't work. However, running ck-launch-session in a terminal inside openbox when already fully launched makes automounting work like a charm. It doesn't work if I put it in my openbox autostart script, though.
    What do I do here?

I can confirm that this does not work with absolute paths. Also does not work with Fluxbox.
Edit: also, invoking dbus-launch after ck-launch-session seems not to work. Even using gvfs instead of just libfm, drives fail to appear in pcmanfm.
Edit2: setting polkit to allow any user to mount stuff doesn't work either.
    Edit3: I'm submitting a bug report now.
Edit4: waitaminute I just got gvfs working. Looks to me like support for udisks is broken again, I'll bet it's upstream.

  • Openbox menu etc doesn´t show [SOLVED]

Hi, I really need some help here.
I can´t figure out what the hell is wrong with my openbox.
I had it running smooth, and because Im new to Linux and Arch I played around I guess and configured.
Somehow I guess I have configured somesthing totally wrong and now my Openbox don´t work as it should.
I have tried to replace the rc.xml, menu.xml and the autostart.sh with the defaults and still it doesn´t help!
When I start Openbox pypanel is supposed to be started, it worked before.
The only thing that comes up when I log in on openbox now is Conky and nothing else. The right click menu nothing works.
I will post some configs that is related to the subject and I would be very glad if someone could guide me
Btw im running Openbox with Gnome.

    Ohh thanks guys!
It worked as a charm, and thanks Brisbin33 for the autostart.sh tip.
So the thing that caused my whole system not to work as it should was that I forgot to put a "&" after conky?
haha that´s kinda anoying I have been sitting and looking through like a milllion files looking for the answer
    But again, really thanks!
    /Neuwerld
that little "&" sends the conky process to the background freeing up the current process (your autostart.sh script) to finish doing what it's doing so you can move on to running openbox itself.  with this in mind, it should be obvious why keeping conky in the foreground would cause problems.
also, replacing it with (sleep 1 && conky) & means... wait a second, when that's done successfully (&&) run conky, and put all of that () to the background.  that way openbox comes up immediatly and only a second later you've got your panel and monitor.
all this after .xinitrc and before openbox

  • [Solved] Openbox permission denied on everything.

Hello fellow archers, I have decided to use openbox, but for everything i need superuser priveliges. E.g. Chromium isnt working, cant set up vlc, it says configuration can`t be saved, cant mount drives with thunar (nor anything else). So if anyone could point me in the right direction, i would be very thankful.

If you also use PolicyKit and D-Bus (e.g. for automatically mounting drives in Nautilus/GNOME) use:
    exec ck-launch-session dbus-launch openbox-session
    Place it in your ~/.xinitrc.
Also, make sure that you have the dbus and polkit packages installed and "dbus" in rc.conf (DAEMONS line).
Thanks, done that, doesnt change anything, i`ve also added my user to storage and users. I created a PolicyKit file according to udev, but nothing. I`ve installed lxde, and its working fine. I dont see why isnt working, i`ve used openbox in the past, and i didnt come across these thing.

  • Openbox and slim won't start

    Hi,
    want to try openbox.
    my .xinitrc says:
    #!/bin/sh
    # ~/.xinitrc
    # Executed by startx (run your window manager from here)
    DEFAULT_SESSION=gnome-session
    case $1 in
    gnome)
    exec ck-launch-session gnome-session
    openbox)
    exec openbox-session
    exec ck-launch-session $DEFAULT_SESSION
    esac
    #exec gnome-session
    #exec ck-launch-session dbus-launch openbox-session
    #exec ck-launch-session openbox-session
    #exec openbox-session
    # exec startkde
    # exec startxfce4
    # ...or the Window Manager of your choice
    Xcursor.theme: dmz-white
    #Xcursor.size: [Größe]
    setxkbmap de
and i can choose in slim between gnome and openbox.
The Problem is when i choose openbox all i see is a grey background and the mouse cursor. After that i come back to the login window. What I'm doing wrong ?

In gnome nautilus draws on the desktop, see the openbox wiki if you want to run openbox as the wm in a gnome environment.
Otherwise to run openbox as a standalone wm all you get by default is a grey screen and a mouse, as you have already encountered and others have mentioned. See our wiki on how to set up common things like setting the wallpaper and drawing icons on the desktop (if you want that).

  • [SOLVED] Nautilus + Samba

I have a little question about nautilus and samba:
ive recentelly installed samba following the wiki guide.
I managed to configure everything and its seems to work. In windows i can see my notebook with its netbios name, but it doesnt happen the same in Nautilus.
When i check at network from nautilus nothing is shown. neither if entering ie smb://xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx . Am i missing something?
as you can see nautilus-share is currently installed.
    community/nautilus-share 0.7.2-5 [instalado]

need suggestions, thanks and sorry for the english, if you dont understand please let me now.

Ive solved the problem by using this command
    exec ck-launch-session dbus-launch openbox-session
    instead of exec ck-launch-session openbox-session
    thanks to all.

did you edit the ~/user/xinitrc file as well
    #!/bin/sh

  • Session Replication doesn't work when using a custom Unicast Channel

    Hello!
After configure a WLS Cluster for an WebApp with session replication support enabled I faced some issues with cluster configuration.
My LAB env used for this configurations is:
    One Solaris 10 SPARC box.
    -- One WLS 11g (10.3.6) domain with:
    ---- 4 Managed servers:
    ---- Admin server
    ---- server-1
    ---- server-2
    ---- Proxy Server (HttpClusterServlet)
    --- 1 Cluster composed by:
    ---- server-1
---- server-2In that setup I noticed if I define a custom network channel for servers ( server>protocols>channels ) in the cluster and set Cluster Messaging Mode as Unicast* in the Cluster config ( Cluster>Configuration>Messaging>Messaging Mode ), so the session state replication does not work.
When I enable the cluster replication debug for managed servers the following messages appears:
    <> <> <1358966729933> <BEA-000000> <[roid:-1772481434088297851] Creating primary for application key /webapp>

At the end of the day I really would like to understand why the session replication only works for Cluster's Messaging using Multicast mode. I read a lot the WLS docs (specifically the cluster/network topics) [1][2], but I can't find an official explanation about this.
Can someone help me understand this behavior?
    Many thanks.

I have Fluxbox started with Slim and .xinitrc. Dbus works only with:
    exec ck-launch-session startfluxbox
you need run Openbox with ck-launch-session:
    exec ck-launch-session openbox-session

  • How would I load a DE/WM (Openbox?) only for use in VNC?

    tl;dr:
How can I make a segregated virtual display that can only be viewed through a VNC connection?
I have a computer that I'm using as a server (Files, Downloads, IRC bouncer), and soon as an XBMC front end for the living room computer to replace the original XBox.
With the TV it will be attached to: I want to be able to watch videos, play music, look at pictures, and possibly run an emulator or two, and that's it.  No access to virtual terminals, no other programs at all.  I can figure this out on my own, I found a few guides, though if you have a particularly good resource, I'd love to see it.
Here's what I do want suggestions on:
I also want it to start, say, Openbox, with just a file manager, JDownloader, and maybe a VERY light IM client for sending links to the server.  (Taking suggestions, I use IRC, Google Talk, and XFire already, but on my laptop and my phone I use multiprotocol clients.)
I want the IM client and JDownloader to always be running, and I want to only be able to access them (and my entire Openbox session) through VNC.  I will be using VNC clients on either a 15' or 22' monitor from Windows 7, Linux (Arch and Ubuntu) and OS X Snow Leopard, as well as from an iPhone.
I would love for the VNC session to, like Virtual Box, automatically resize itself according to window size (or the iPhone's resolution) but I'd have no problems with a single resolution.
I searched, but I suspect I'm using the wrong keywords, I've seen something about this before...  I'll be doing this in about two days, but I figured I'd ask for help now rather than later.

Set up an appropriate ~/.vnc/xstartup file - syntax is the same ~/.xinitrc, but it's for the vnc session only.

  • [SOLVED] Openbox autostart no longer working since upgrade

After the upgrade on May 14 2013 my autostart file no longer works. I tried renaming my autostart.sh to just autostart no luck. There is nothing wrong with the autostart file as I can run it manually and it will load all my apps. Also, if I cd to  /usr/lib/openbox/ and run openbox-autostart directly it works. • [SOLVED] Openbox+Thunar, how to show usb devices in thunar?

Hi.  I've been running a pretty standard Xfce environment for a while.  When I plug in a usb drive, I get a new item pop up in the "DEVICES" section of the left panel in thunar (note, it doesn't automount the device, it just shows that it's there and only mounts it when I click on it...I like this behaviour).
Now, I'm setting up an even lighter-weight environment, just openbox and tint2 with thunar as the file manager.  But when I'm logged into the openbox environment, I don't get the item in the "DEVICES" section in thunar (but it still works fine in xfce).
If it run thunar from the command line and plug in a usb drive I get this message in the terminal
(thunar:21205): thunar-WARNING **: Failed to launch the volume manager (Failed to execute child process "thunar-volman" (No such file or directory)), make sure you have the "thunar-volman" package installed.
I don't see why I would need thunar-volman if it works fine in xfce.  If I install thunar-volman and do the same, I get this message
    thunar-volman: Unsupported USB device type.
    thunar-volman: Unsupported USB device type.
    thunar-volman: Unknown block device type.
So I'm wondering if maybe there is a daemon that is autostarted during an xfce session that makes thunar probe for devices to be plugged in or something like that.  Why does it work in an xfce session, but not in an openbox session?

    Thanks for your replies.
henk:  I tried installing polkit-gnome and creating the rule as per the wiki, but it didn't work.  Volume detection seems to work fine in xfce without this package.
jv2112:  I added udiskie to .config/openbox/autostart and it seems to work.  I've had problems with udiskie in the past; it seemed to have some trouble unmounting the drives properly after a write as I would find that the newly written files were corrupt.  But it seems to be working fine.
I'll mark this as solved, but I'm still curious as to how xfce-thunar is mounting the usb devices.
One clue is that with udiskie, devices get mounted to /media, whereas in xfce they get mounted to /var/run/media/username/ (or something like that).

  • [SOLVED] Openbox Autostarting only some programs

Ok, so I've tried searching the forums and either cannot find the one that answers my question or it doesn't exist.  Either way, I have my openbox autostart script set up like this:
    xcompmgr &
    nitrogen --restore &
    yakuake &
    cairo-dock &
The file is saved as ~/.config/openbox/autostart.sh Only cairo dock and yakuake start up at the start of the openbox session.  The cairo dock has the black box around it from xcompmgr not being run but then if i manually start it in a terminal with "xcompmgr" then it goes away like it should.  So xcompmgr won't autostart and nitrogen won't restore either.  Nitrogen works if I manually do it after the openbox session has begun but only stays while i'm logged in, no restoring upon next login.  I'm trying to figure out if I have some syntax wrong?  I've tried separating the xcompmgr as far away from the cairo dock to give it more time to load but nothing...any help would be very appreciated.
other info: I have no DE, just the dock, openbox and nitrogen for my desktop.

  • [Solved] Openbox-Message: Failed to open the display from the ....

Hey, I'm new to Arch and I've been working on setting it up on my Laptop and so far I haven't had very many problems save one.  I can't get any of the available Window Managers.  Whenever I try running them I get a message like:
"wmii: fatal: Can't open display," or "Error: Couldn't connect to XServer" (Fluxbox), or "twm: unable to open display" or "dwm: cannot open display" or "Openbox-Message: Failed to open display from the DISPLAY environment variable,".  What am I supposed to do?  I've checked to see if it was a problem with my installation of Openbox by reinstalling that and installing several other window managers, and I've checked to see if it was a problem with me not having the right kernel modules loaded, but after I ran "hwdetect --load-modules," which is supposed to load all detectable modules, but even after that I still get the same messages.  Any ideas, I've tried just about everything that I know\have thought about, so yeah... any ideas?

Boxes wrote:Okay, well I got "xinit openbox" to work by searching for the "intel," "vesa," "fbdev," and "glx" packages via pacman and installing them.  I still can't run openbox without xinit, and I tried running "xinit wmii," but it didn't seem to work, although it did run, but I couldn't do anything.  It looked exactly the same was as "xinit openbox" did right after I installed "vesa," which was the first package I downloaded and installed via pacman.

You need to read a bit more about how X works - you can't run any window manager unless there's a X session for it to run on. That's why xinit works. Set up your ~/.xinitrc correctly and use startx.
xinit wmii ran a wmii session, but I guess you didn't configure it at all - that's why you couldn't do anything. Again, more reading required.

Oh, I see.  So an X-session is something that's required.  Oh, okay.

  • [SOLVED] Automatic Login to Openbox

Since I'm on a single user machine and have a bios based password prompt at startup, I would like to log in as user automatically and start openbox the same way.
At the moment I have to log in as usual and can start openbox via startx since I have put
    exec openbox-session
    into ~/.xinitrc.
How can I automate these steps? I tried it with rc.local, but that way it logically logs in as root which isn't my goal. I would like not to use SLiM if possible.

Summary of what I've done to get things work. Maybe somebody can use this as it's a quick version of the wiki - just make sure to replace USERNAME with yours and you've added "exec openbox-session" to your ~/xinitrc.
    Created autologin.c
    #include <unistd.h>
    int main()
    execlp( "login", "login", "-f", "USERNAME", 0);
Compiled and copied into the right place
    gcc -o autologin autologin.c
    sudo cp autologin /usr/local/sbin/
    Edited /etc/inittab
    id:5:initdefault:
    c1:2345:respawn:/sbin/agetty -n -l /usr/local/sbin/autologin 38400 tty1 linux
    x:5:once:/bin/su USERNAME -l -c "/bin/bash --login -c /usr/bin/startx >/dev/null 2>&1"
