Need a Mac Pro Box

Hello,
Can anyone tell me where I can find a new/refurbed Mac Pro desktop box? I am moving home soon and will thereafter be selling my Mac Pro. I have tried to find a suitable box to not only manage until I move, but to fit the desktop for selling and have had no luck, I've even asked in Apple Store and other computer stores without any results, plus the Internet hasn't been much help. My original box has been damaged beyond repair!
Any advice would be grately appreciated!
Thanks,
Will

Another option - in the past I used one of those Mailbox etc. or UPS Store type places that could make custom fitting inserts - basically a plastic bag they fill with dense, expandable foam - they do it in two parts - they do the bottom half, press the object to be protected in half way and then let the foam set. Once it sets, they take out the piece they made, and do the procedure again. There's a bit of finessing to it and it definitely shows that they know what they are doing - I wouldn't try to pick up a bottle of spray foam at home depot and a trash bag and do this myself, if you know what I mean! The other benefit of using them is if you ship with them and let them pack it, it makes the insurance/damage claim process easier if you, heaven forbid, need it.
Just have them wrap your Mac Pro in plastic really well before doing this. While the guy I had was really good and it was obvious he had done it many times, some foam leaked out during the process - he stopped another employee that was just going to foam around my bare item, and wrapped it in plastic - I'm glad he did! Even though they use the foam in a bag, some can and probably will leak out during the process.
That would probably be the most economical way to go. A few calls to some shipping type places and you should be able to find someone that can do something similar. Another way to go is some places have generic boxes with foam that is in sections, and by trimming and removing the sections of foam they create a form-fitting cavity. It's a little more time consuming, but if you can find such a box it might be cheaper to get it and then customize the foam yourself. Personally I liked just letting the packing store do it for me but your milage may vary depending on the cost difference

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
Try holding the Shift key while your Mac is starting to start into safe mode. Then, after starting in safe mode, open Finder, select Go menu (on the menu bar) > Go to Folder, and type /Library/StartupItems. Then, empty this folder and restart the Mac.
If your Mac starts after doing this, it was a problem with a third-party app that starts automatically when you turn on the computer. It won't start automatically anymore after doing that

  • Does Apple sell the mac pro box for shipping a mac pro to a new address

I am being relocated across the country, USA, by my employer. And need to ship my Mac Pro to the new location. Does Apple or any commercial supplier provide a Mac Pro Specific shipping box that can be bought. I.E. that has all the correct foam and spacers for the tower. Thanks.
    Raul

Now is a great time to consider the cost of shipping a 65lb (or more) item all across the country Vs the cost of selling your old Mac and buying a new one when you get there.
The 2009 and later models Geekbench at nearly twice the speeds of the 2008 and previous (at same number of processor and nominal speeds). This is mainly due to Muti-Threading and memory improvements. The memory for the newer models is MUCH cheaper if you need to add on.
I suggest you cost out the shipping, then ask then for that amount toward a system upgrade when you arrive. Or check carefully whether you need to provide documentation of actual shipping or whether estimates will do.

If you want to go through all of that for some scratches, you can get an idea of what's involved from downloading and reading through the service manual here: http://tim.id.au/laptops/apple/macpro/

  • Mac Pro has slowed to a crawl - Please Help Me!

    Hello,
For some time now my Wireless or Wired Internet connection using my Mac Pro has slowed to almost nothing. For example, This page took 5 mins to load and now Internet use has become unusable.
I feel its my Mac Pro because all other Apple Computer run very fast wirelessly. I have (2) New iMac's (1) Apple TV and (1) Apple iPhone. All stream and surf the Internet blazingly fast.
My Mac Pro is constantly being redirected to other sites (mostly **** related) and a huge amount of Pop ups (even though pop ads are disabled in Safari). All Internet browsers perform the same on my Mac Pro or ANYTHING Internet related including WoW, Software updates or even iTunes Music Down loads.
I really feel that in some way (which is shocking) I am infected with "something" that is making my computer crawl on the Internet. Redirection of websites is just now very aggravating.
I am looking at the (2) Original Disks that came inside the Mac Pro Box. I'm seriously considering wiping my system clean and starting from scratch.
I currently hold NOTHING on my Factory 320GB HD other than programs.
I have installed (2) 1TB drives and created a RAID slice thus creating a single HD icon on my desktop that reads 1.8TB. Thats is where all my Music, Photos, and Movies reside.
    My question is....
When I wipe my system will that RAID be broken? Will I lose everything on those 2 drives or will using the restore CD's leave all that information in tact?
Please let me know before I proceed.
    Thank you for your time.
    John

Your RAID won't be touched. But back it up today if you haven't yet!
I use Firefox for security with noscript and some other filters, but I also hardened the router firewall to manually block services, ports and add rules - both incoming and outgoing.
You might want to look at LittleSnitch or NetBarrier and do some logging.
I've seen/heard where older routers and modems were fine, but not with Mac Pro or with Intel Macs in general and needed to be replaced or firmware updated. Problems with the latest updates for Airport have been seen by some, and worth checking into - on forums, news sites or hit google.
And of course check what processes are getting loaded and run; manually delete caches, history, metadata, even the bookmarks cache.
    ~/Library/Caches/Metadata
There are issues with fake Flash updates; normal sites (like CNN) suffering from SQL-injection. Best to run with javascript off for now.
Might want to look into ClamXav and other malware protection. But I would switch and see how Firefox and Opera behave. And turn off java, script, and plug-ins while you consider your options and try to find out why.

  • Mac Pro arriving today!

There is SO much info here that it's hard to find all help that I may need. Am I even posting in the right forum?!
So, any help with what I may run into would be MOST appreciated!
I just read that Tiger has a small app in Utilities called Migration that may help move files and apps over to the new machine...does it take ALL the files (hidden ones, too)? Like including the payed versions of Roxio's Toast Titainium? (I can't find where my product key is!)
I am MOST concerned that my version of Photoshop (7) won't work on the Mac Pro_but have been told that it will run fine, (via Rosetta?) is this true?
So, as you can see, I will be grateful for ALL comments!
    Thank you...

    iMac G4   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

All the advice I got prior to the arrival of my Mac Pro was to wipe the hard drive clean and start fresh with a new install. I was so antsy tho' I didn't want to wait and since I was transferring from one Intel system to another I figured if it didn't work, I'd wipe it clean and reinstall and then install the programs anew.
But it worked just fine. About a week later I was putting the Mac Pro box away, taking the items out of it for storage, when I realized Apple had not included any OSX disks at all. The machine was already preconfigured but still, I would need those disks should anything ever go wrong (of if I just wanted to boot from Disk 1 and use the utilities).
So I called and asked that the disks be mailed. The disks they sent were identified as "replacement" disks, not original OSX disks. It doesn't matter, of course, because they do the same thing but I wondered how a newbie might feel or do in such a situation.
So make sure your OSX disks are in the box, just in case. BTW, I've never had another reason to wipe out a hard disk and start anew. OSX just runs well for me. Every now and then I'll install a program that won't feel or sit right and when I verify the hard disk it will tell me to boot from Disk 1 and use the disk utility to correct the error.
As for the Office Demo ... when I bought the Mac Pro they offered me the option of throwing in a free (Canon, I think) color printer but I already had a fine HP Color Laserjet so I asked for (and got) Office for the Mac. So I never did see the Office demo product, the full version must have overwritten it.
But if you want to remove it without any residual files I suppose you could use something like AppZapper (which has a trial version that will allow you to zap three or five programs).

  • Any hope for older Mac Pro?

My Mac Pro is a 2007 model and just under the necessary limit to be allowed to upgrade to either Mt. Lion or Mavericks. Is there any sort of upgrade that would make it eligible? (I can supply exact specs if needed)

No Mac Pro models sold in 2007 can be upgraded beyond 10.7.5, and that will be running in 32-bit kernel.
Apple has chosen not to update the firmware that would allow these machines to run 64-bit kernel,  ? perhaps there is not enough RAM to store the newer firmware?
The only real upgrade path is to convert that machine into Cash, and use the cash to buy a machine that better meets your needs.

  • The saga continues Mac Pro setup

Sorry to start yet another one my first time here. After much reading and research, among reading over 50 pages here in this forum alone I would like some guidance on setting up my new Mac Pro (2008) dual quad core 2.8Ghz bad boy.
I just purchased 4 Western Digital Caviar SE16 WD6400AAKS 640GB 7200 RPM 16MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive - OEM from Newegg here -> http://tinyurl.com/6jmpbr Because these seem to be suggested for use many times throughout this and other forums. I hope these are the correct ones? They were also a great buy however, I am somewhat fearful of Newegg’s shipping strategy (lack of proper packing and UPS tends to toss shipments around like a pro-wrestler). In addition, I would have also like to have got them from different sources as not from the same batch but hey the price was too good to miss out on and I did not feel like waiting.
Now for the best approach, or approaches, to setting them up for best usage and optimal performance. 2 sets striped and mirrored Raid 10 I think it is ( preferably with a small boot partition for just the OS say 100gb)
    or
1 drive for the OS and move users, and applications to a striped and mirrored Raid. I have read most of the links provided here and in other forums but I am still not sure the best route to go. Also most of the information is somewhat not as thorough as I would like.
(Background or helpful information as to my needs)
I do a small amount of lightroom and aperture toying around but not a lot. I do encode video some mostly for just personal use movies, some final cut studio occasionally, and I do have (but not used yet) logic studio (for one of my son’s to use). My biggest no no’s or issues that I would have would be in playing games like COD4 or moving large amounts of data on and off the machine which would frag out my system. I think? Most of the work that I would be doing would not push the system very much and I feel I have enough memory and space that I will need. Except for a backup this is where my next problem lies. In reading I hear advice to use superduper, carboncloner, to backup and re-image back to the system. From what I am hearing this is to defrag, while backing up the system. I have used both of these products but have recently started using clonetool would like feedback on it as well.
In addition to the hard drives , just after getting my unit I purchased 16gig of “supposedly” matched pairs from MacGeeks (Ebay store) at a reasonable price I believe -> http://tinyurl.com/6fgmq6 They all seem to work fine and haven’t noticed any problems and since they had such good feedback I decided to chance getting my ram from someone other the “the blood-suckers” AKA Apple. I really did not need a Mac Pro like some do I just wanted one so that I could have a great machine that would last hopefully for many years of worry free service and not have the burning desire to get a better unit. I feel this will fulfill my desires and needs for many years to come if I get the proper advice on setting my unit up the first time. I would love as much instruction and insight on the approaches Mac users have to helping a noob set his up. I can’t believe this all started this year in July with the purchase of a Mac book 2.4Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo laptop. That first taste was all that it has taken. In September this year I purchased a Dell mini 9 netbook and turned in into a very fast (but not a powerhouse) couch and coffee shop machine running leopard 10.5.5 even faster for the basics (boot up, surfing) than my real Mac book. I would love to get the full experience and pleasure out of my Mac Pro. I very much appreciate all the help and tips from the people in the Mac community.

Thanks The hatter for the input, I decided to test it by taking a drive out it would boot with three drives so that was a success. However, upon replacing the pulled drive back into the raid FAIL.
So a do over was then implemented.
This time I chose to do it with 2 sets mirrored and then stiped the two sets. Viola I tested pulling the drive and booting (ok) then re-inserted the drive back into the raid and booted then repaired the degrading raid and I'm good so at least if I have a drive failure happen before I get my backup strategy setup (more money for external backup) I should be good.
One note I most certainly understand this is not a route most people would take but it is pretty fast now and that pleases me.
Also at the beginning of this episode
I first tried to setup a boot (OS X only) drive and move users and apps to other drives and symlinking but that seemed to be even more difficult than setting up the raid. I think that is the preferred setup route but I don't have the skills to get r done <a little Larry the cable-guy humor.
Thanks and if you guys have any tips or suggestions please help a noob out. I appreciate all you guys for the help with this seemingly difficult setup.

  • HT201364 My Mac Pro is mid/late 2007

System requirements for upgrading states you need a Mac Pro early 2007 or later...
Will upgrading to Mavericks DEFINITELY not work on my slightly older machine, or only POSSIBLY?
    Thanks
    Rob

Mavericks requires an Early 2008 or newer Mac Pro, so you can't upgrade to OS X Mavericks.
In the case of your Mac Pro, this is caused by a firmware restriction. OS X Mavericks is a 64-bit operating system that needs a 64-bit EFI version, and as far as I know, your Mac Pro has got a 32-bit EFI version, so you can't start up Mavericks. Leave your current Mac OS X version

  • CUDA hardware in a mac pro

I am considering buying an "nvidia gtx-285"card for my 2008 mac pro. I already own a "NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT 512MB GDDR3" card. I have a bunch of questions about how worthwhile this upgrade would be:
    1. Would the cuda technology give me the ability to playback Canon 7d (50mps avchd footage) smoothly in CS4? With my current graphics card CS4 chokes on it, and I am exporting mpeg 2 proxy files to edit with.
    2. Can others tell me their experience with CS5, a cuda card, and working with high bitrate avchd footage?
    3. What should I do with my old card? Would both fit in my mac pro? Would having the older one in there too disable the use of cuda technology in Premiere? Could I tell Premiere to only use the cuda card and ignore the other one?

No, GPU acceleration is a feature of CS5, not CS4.  Also check to make sure your Mac tower would support it.  You need a Mac Pro that is a 3.1 or 4.1.  I have a 2008 Mac Pro and if you look in the System Profiler, it is a 2.1, which means it won't support a CUDA enabled nvidia graphics card.
    2. Can others tell me their experience with CS5, a cuda card, and working with high bitrate avchd footage?
It works great.  the GPU accelerates the effects, not the decoding of the video.  If you put CS5 on your existing Mac Pro, you'll get two thirds of the Mercury Playback engine without the GPU.  Because CS5 is native 64 bit you will see a big difference in the performance.
    3. What should I do with my old card? Would both fit in my mac pro? Would having the older one in there too disable the use of cuda technology in Premiere? Could I tell Premiere to only use the cuda card and ignore the other one?
    ebay?

  • Will and early 2009 mac pro support a 4tb internal harddrive?

I have an early 2009 2.66 Quad Core Intel Xeon Mac Pro with 8gb of Ram...
Wondering if it'll handle a 3 or 4 tb Seagate Barracuda drive without much hesitating...
    Thank you guys!

Some manufacturers have added platters, but have opted NOT to go taller. They are shortening the allowed screw penetration depth, in effect "taking back" some of the space previously allotted to long screws, especially bottom-mount screws directly adjacent to the platters area. (needed for Mac Pro tower sleds).
Solutions include shortening the existing screws, using new shorter screws, and placing a washer under the head of the screw to effectively shorten it.

  • Advice buying new mac pro

Im in process in buying mac laptop-mac pro 15 or 17 inch-new for business
I have never owned apple software/hardware. CUrrently have sony vaio laptop and also pc desktop with adsl broadband.
    wondering about few queries.
    1. will mac pro work in my existing wireless internet home (considering net/modem (external) are linked to pc desktop)?
    2. stability of running PC software if needed on mac pro?
how effective, stable are parellels an bootcamp?

4 mac pro laptop compatibility with PDA phones (DOPOD? JASJAM--I mate)? --which are windows based platform phone/ORGANIZERS?
hoping for some honest answers--I have never used mac before. Just heard good things about them.
    Cheers

+1. will mac pro work in my existing wireless internet home (considering net/modem (external) are linked to pc desktop)?+
It should, assuming your home wireless is a standard 802.11 type of thing.
+2. stability of running PC software if needed on mac pro?+
+how effective, stable are parellels an bootcamp?+
In Boot Camp, software should be exactly the same as on a PC.
In Parallels, software should generally be fine unless it makes use of more exotic features or hardware, like special display modes.
+3. when is the leopard operating system available (in Australia?) ? should i wait till its released so its already part of bundle?+
The official line is October, as with elsewhere in the world. If you have need of a Mac now, then it makes no sense to wait. If it's more of a "can survive for now" situation, then it's really personal choice.
+4 mac pro laptop compatibility with PDA phones (DOPOD? JASJAM--I mate)? --which are windows based platform phone/ORGANIZERS?+
I think this would depend on the particular device, but in general don't expect features like synchronisation to work in OS X if they rely on Windows software (such as Outlook).

  • LE8 on a Mac Pro

I read that LE8 doesn't support more than 2 processing cores. Is this true? I have been looking at getting a Mac Pro with 2 quad core processors, but would it be overkill in Logic if it can't utilize all that processing power?
    Thanks for any input....

Of course you can run LE8 on a mac pro. I mean, you can order a mac pro from Apple with LE8 pre-installed! LE8 is basically LP8 without all the extras but it still has the same audio and midi engines so load up enough EXS24 samples and pluggins and you'll see lots of activity on those extra cores... But suppose the point is you don't need a Mac pro to run LE8. It will run just fine on a macbook or iMac. I run Logic Pro 8 on an older iMac with 2 gigs of ram. Works fine for up to 16 tracks, more if you use the freeze function. The new iMac's with 4 gigs ram would easily double that. An 8 core Mac Pro with 8 gigs of ram would handle pretty much anything you could throw at it. But if your going to spend that kind of money on a computer spend the extra $300.00 and get Logic Pro Studio. There just so much more content.
