Need advice on Wifi setup

I need some advice on the best wifi setup to use for my house's configuration.
Currently I have cable internet coming in at one end of the house downstairs.  I have an Airport Express (circa 2010) connected directly to the cable modem. On the second floor on the complete opposite side of the house is my bedroom/office.  I have an Airport Extreme (2011 5th generation) set up to extend the wireless network.
This has worked fine and we have not had any problems connecting any of our wireless devices to the network.
I also have the airport express set up to use dyndns with a domain name I own so that I can remotely access my network at work.
I have just added a new mac mini to the mix to replace an aging and antiquated Windows Home Server.  I want to administer all the user's (6 kids) in the house, manage photo and itunes libraries and eventually set up a webserver and allow remote access to our home computers.
So my question is this....is there a better way to configure the airport devices?  I would prefer to have the cable modem connected directly to the airport extreme, but then I would be wasting the USB and gigabit ethernet ports as the location of the cable modem is in our living room with no electronic devices in sight.  Since my primary connection for my main computer and the new mac mini is through the airport extreme connected wirelessly to the airport express, I am thinking the express could be the bottleneck.  Would spending the cash on a 2nd Airport Extreme to replace the Airport Express be beneficial or just a waste of money?
Thanks.
Brian

Yes, I had considered running an etherent cable to the bedroom, but my wife doesn't like the idea of seeing the cable snaking through hallways.
In the bedroom, I have connected the imac, mac mini and the AEBS with etherent cable.  It's just my connection to the internet that does not have the benefit of ethernet, although the speed I get from my cable internet is much slower than the wifi connection.
I would eventually like to move the cable modem upstairs and use the AEBS as the primary base station and the AX downstairs to extend my wireless network.  However, there is an issue in that the cable modem has to be the only device on the cable connection and I am currently using the cable connection to carry my DISH Network signal and basic cable signal to the bedroom.
I guess my question really boils down to this...Would an AE in place of the AX give a stronger signal to the 2nd AE in the bedroom.  I will turn off the AE tonight and see what kind of a signal I get from the AX downstairs.  I haven't tried it, but I suppose I could also move the Airport Extreme (5th Gen) downstairs and hook it directly to the cable modem and not even use the AX because the signal from the new AE should be as good or better than last year's AX - but then I would lose the gigabit ethernet between those devices - which is why I haven't done that yet.
I could also drop the $$$ on a Time Capsule for the bedroom and use it for all my backups (but that's kinda what I'm hoping to do with the mac mini) and move the AE downstairs to the cable modem.
Decisions, decisions.

  • Need advice on ATV setup in new house...

Before I get into too much detail, here is what I'm looking for...
I've bought a newish 3-storey townhouse with a first-level living room, a second-level media room and a third-level lofted bedroom. I plan on having a 36" TV on the first level in the living room. I plan on having a larger 50" TV on the second level in the media room. Third floor bedroom I'll consider last. What I'd like to do is get an ATV and place it in the media room with the 50". I'll probably get some sort of up-converting DVD with surround system for the media room on that second level but I'd like to possibly get some additional speakers for the living room as well.
What I want to end up with is a simple yet elegant way of watching my PVR cable stuff and ATV and DVD player all on that 50" in the media room. I'd also like to be able to play the music from my ATV downstairs in the living room during parties and stuff. I'm assuming I'd control it all from my iPhone using the Remote app. I guess I'm just looking for a way to run music all over the house from the ATV in the media room.
That probably was too much detail after all. Any ideas?

    Does that make sense?
Absolutely, when I said wire where you can, that didn't necessarily include the lower floor, airtunes only works over wifi, so unless you had another reason to run ethernet downstairs you wouldn't.
If both the mac and the tv are wired to the router, then you couldn't really ask for any more. And in addition, your wifi base is also on the middle floor and while you didn't specify any media requirement for the bedroom, wifi on the middle floor would be best placed should you go down that route.
As for the idea of running the second output from the theatre to speakers downstairs, it may save some money (on the basis you need some powered speakers/hifi for the express) but you've got them wires to run and you couldn't have the guys in the media room listening to 'Shine on you crazy diamond' and the girls downstairs listening to 'Take That'.

  • Need advice on best setup for Extreme and Express w/ (n only) network

I'd like to get some advice on the best setup for my situation. I've read a number of posts on WDS, Extending a Network, etc. and, unfortunately, I'm now more confused than ever.
We have an Airport Extreme 802.11n using WPA2 Personal, 2.4Ghz (n only connection) which I've found to give us the best range/connection speeds for the following devices (all computers running 10.5.5, Apple TV's using most current update):
    (2) MacBooks
    iMac
    (2) AppleTVs
The good news we have a large house, the bad news we have a large house. Meaning of course that I don't get the range in parts of the house I'd like to. I also have an older Mini (G4) connected to the AEBS thru ethernet (the Mini acts as the iTunes server for the ATVs).
I just bought a new Airport Express with the desire to place it on the other side of the house to both enhance the range of the wireless network and to provide another wired to wireless connection to the network.
I initially merely chose to "Extend a wireless network" but that seems to have a MAJOR adverse impact on the speeds of the wireless network. dropping the streaming to one of the ATV by like 90%. I would like to maintain the security settings I have as well as the 2.4Ghz (n only) since these provide the best speed/connection range on the AEBS.
My question then is what is the best way to use the AX (WDS? Bridge?).

The best way to use it is the option you chose "Extend a wireless network".
WDS forces you to the much slower 802.11g and even cuts that bandwidth in half.
Operating as a bridge has nothing to do with wirelessly extending a network. Changing this option won't have any effect on wireless bandwidth.

You probably can, but this type of configuration is not recommended or supported by Apple.
Two cautions if you want to try this:
    1)  The Time Capsule has to be configured to "Join" your existing wireless network in this type of setup...and to do that, you must know the exact type of wireless security that your network is using.
    2)  Backups are likely going to take twice as long. The wireless signal must travel from your computer to the wireless router and then from the wireless router back to the Time Capsule.  Two "hops"......even if the computer is located close to the Time Capsule.
If you want to try this, we can tell you how....but with no guarantees on your results....since this is not officially supported.

  • Day 2 with ATV, may need advice.

iPhoNettie wrote:Apple Genius-tried syncing thru ethernet cable
I need to know if this is possible with ethernet cable only between ATV/MacPro vs Airport wireless.
I've spent hours with this 32gb ATV to just load and it's been nothing but long hours.
One trick that will not work.
Macpro is mainly using ethernet cable to the wireless access 24/7.
    I leave his airport off.
I'm on day two of the first attempt at using ATV, it has been sitting for a year never used.
This all started yesterday with a members advice using ATP, vs iPhone connected to RXv3900.
    What a Great iDea.
I turned Airport on the MacPro. Not sure why I did. In the end, you need to.
Plug in ATV, and started in last night. Noticing it's Quite slow on Airport.
Discovered there is no real-time status of the load you checked/selected in iTunes to know if it's too much.
Sure enough at present, the 5th time of de-selecting is to make room again.
At 50 something, we have a set logic that's hardened.
If dishwasher is full & ready, do you unload/reload complete to add one item?
    Apparently Apple does.
There maybe an update that is needed.
It's not showing up by default or where to access if there is.
ATV finally finished with 8.5Gb free. I'll see if update is found.
Still very reluctant to do update with ATV actually working.
Getting to the chase here, can ATV & MacPro be direct linked w/ethernet cable?
One test I just tried while ATV was loading again, I shut Airport off on the MacPro.
ATV immediately disconnected from iTunes. Whoops.
My test was to see if ATV would still get through to Mac wirelessly by accessing wifi MacPro is wired to. Nope.
Is this telling me I don't need Comcast's wifi to connect the 2? ATV/MacPro only for loading ATV.
Can ATV connect it's path directly to MacPro's Airport? Skipping Comcast's wifi.
I guess my final question is/ can ATV connect to MacPro with only angry twisted copper wire?
Also, is there any advantage with MacPro on ethernet cable and Airport on at the same time?
I see no results either way.
I hope my versing is with some accuracy.
I'm not up on the latest politically correct lingo.
For sure of one thing, a 1Tb drive is on it's way for a new mission.
For the first time, I'm viewing trailers on ATV, and I have Airport shut off on MacPro.
This is good. I was afraid up to this point.
    Thanks'

Yes they should provided you've registered the AppleTv to sync with iTunes on the Mac Pro account - do you remember setting AppleTV to connect to iTunes by entering a 5 digit code in iTunes from AppleTV?
Yes, I have performed all the loading of ATV by wireless from iTunes from the MacPro.
This simple ethernet connection should just work to sync from previous reports.
This will be great. The main reason is to take ATV to the cabin or shop with no internet access.
This should work if all you're doing is syncing and then putting the AppleTv back where you want to use it.
However, if you want to connect by ethernet all the time, then the direct connection to the Mac Pro will not allow AppleTV to access the internet for various store/photo/YouTube features or to authorise playback of some iTunes Store material/rentals etc, unless you've configured internet sharing over the Mac Pro ethernet port and the Mac Pro is connected to the internet either via it's other ethernet port or wireless.
Thank You, it's not a priority to access these features with ATV.
Your best bet is to have AppleTv connect to a router to see the internet itself and to see the Mac Pro on the local network.
Great, and I really appreciate your quick reply.
    Have a Great Day.

  • PC and Home Theatre Hookup....need advice

)PC and Home Theatre Hookup....need adviced Ok, I'll try not to sound so illiterate......
I am in the process of connecting my PC to my home theater setup and have the following:
. The computer has the X-Fi Platinum Fatality card with the I/O Bay
    2. The A/V receiver is the Sony STR-DG70...it has the Optical and Coaxial digital inputs and it does have the dts logo
    3. Polk Audio 5. speakers connected to receiver
    4. The Creative Home Theater Connect DTS-60
    Now the questions:
. Could I have just used the Flexijack connection on the card running to receiver digital optical input? I am not using the I/O 3/2" bay that came with the card....don't have an extra bay to install in the new case?
    2. Could I have just used the Sound Blaster Digital I/O Module from the Flexijack connection on the card?to receiver digital optical input?
    3. Or do I need to use the Creative Home Theater Connect DTS-60? And if so is the Optical connection the best of the two?
Thanks so much for any help,
    Kenny

    - This will fit your "flexi-jack" when connecting to optical sources........

  • HELP: New to Mavericks. Need advice on setting up secure user accounts

    Hi,
I need advice on how to best set up user accounts on Mavericks.
I must set up an Administrative account...Any suggestion for best settings here to protect against targeted malicious exploits?
I would also like to set up two user accounts for everyday work with applications and Internet browsing done in such a way that the machine would be protected from malicious attacks but with a minimum of inconvience for the users ( myself and my wife ).
    Thanks

Hi hassiman, any exploits will come in the form of users downloading suspect pieces of software like browser add-ons and extensions, device drivers and non-trusted apps.
Make sure that you do not use the admin account for any day to day use
Create two normal user accounts, one for each of you and use them day to day
When using the admin account to set up your system, pay very careful attention to the System Preferences > Privacy & Security area. There are various things to set up properly here:
There are three settings for how people can download software, 1) From Mac App Store only, 2) From App Store and registered developers and 3) from anyone. It defaults to 2) but check it and if you feel uncomfortable with that, set it to 1). This might prevent you from downloading and installing software you think you might need; but think carefully about wether you really need it and therefore wether you should temporarily allow it via a lower setting.
For the firewall, if you dont have a firewalled internet gateway device (a wireless router or similar), make sure the firewall is turned on. Most internet connection equipment does have such a firewall; make sure it is blocking any incoming connections by using its admin tool (usually a web browser interface). Consult its documentation for details.
Whenever OS X asks for a password to complete a task of any kind, look carefully at what is making it ask and if you aren't sure, don't go through with it; it is usually wanting the admin account name and ppassword to complete some kind of system modification (install, config etc.).
Make sure that you are both aware of the danger of installing any software that wants to add itself to your system or web browser. Things like custom search bars, extensions etc. If you are viewing a web page and it says you need "x" to see it or use it properly, make sure you really need to use that web site; otherwise don't do it.
It really all comes down to common sense; the worst security breaches and damage come from users who don't know what to do, but they still click "OK" when they should be clicking "cancel" or "close". Make sure you and your wife are fully aware that responsibility lies with yourselves. It is better to take a minute to decide wether to install something (even if it's 20 times a week) than spend days fixing a compromised system.

need advice regarding physical standby databases in rac environment on oracle 10G r2
I like to have have a Primary ( 10 node RAC cluster ) shipping to a physical standby ( 3 node RAC cluster ) shipping using LGWR .
So I have a lot of questions
    1) What will be the performance overhead on the Primay if we are using LGWR SYNC option .
    2) Does the overhead depends on the physical distance between primary & physical
3)Do you recommend a seperate private network for shipping logs between primary and standby.
    4) I know that DGMGRL supports RAC only from 10g. So are there any know issues are bugs using DGMGRL is RAC environments.
    Thanks in advance

Generally you should have same CPU architecture and same operating system but it's not mandatory to have the exactly the same CPU model, the same number of CPU, the same RAM size etc.
Actually starting with 11.1 you don't need to have the same hardware setup: it 's even possible to have primary and standby database on different platforms: http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B28359_01/server.111/b28294/standby.htm#i72053.

    Hi Joni Guapz,
There shouldn't be any issue on this board if you do the proper setups accordingly.
1 word of advice for you. This mobo is very very very particular of the RAMs working on it, therefore, please kindly refer to the following page for a list of compatible RAMs:
    http://www.msi.com.tw/program/products/mainboard/mbd/pro_mbd_detail.php?UID=433
Please note that if you are an o/clocker, I suggest you browsing through the older post of the forum through the search engine and see which are the best selected RAMs for your board, or you can go to the following thread by me on Mobo vs RAMs etc... on the top of 1st page and see the pros and cons listed out from individual users.
All in all, this is a very very very good and stable board for me myself(in my signature) and it rocks very smoothly during gaming, ripping music and multi-tasking.
    All the Best... :D!!!

  • Need advice about certification: do J2SE 1.4 or wait for 1.5 to go out?

I need advice here! I am studing for Java Programmer certification (310-035) and I know now that the certification does not have any expiration date, instead it's version based. So, if I get now a J2SE 1.4 certification, soon it will be outdated... I guess!
Does anyone know or have any ideia of WHEN java 1.5 sdk will be avaliable, and anyone can tell me how long it will take for a new 1.5 programmer certification be avaliable for general public?

Do both. 1.5 is far enough away that you do not want to wait for it.
And besides, 1.5 has enough new stuff in it that you'll want to recertify anyway.

  • Need advice on on a Mac Pro 1,1 Media Center

I currently have a 2009 Mac Mini running as my home media center, but I recently came by a FREE Mac Pro 1,1 and have decided to repurpose it as my media center so I can migrate my Mac Mini to my bedroom TV where it will live an easy life doing nothing but run Plex Home Theater, Netflix, and EyeTV. This machine falling into my lap was also quite timely because my 4-bay Drobo is running low on available expansion and another Drobo isn't in the budget at the moment.
This vintage mac pro is running Lion 10.7.5, has 1 old and crusty 500GB hardrive, dual x5160 processors, 4GB RAM (one stick i'm pretty sure is toast judging by the red light and the kernel panics), and the standard NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT 256MB graphics card. It will be used primarily for the following: network storage for iphoto and itunes libraries, streaming video, Plex Media Server & Plex Home Theater, and Handbrake encoding. I also have a goal of safety of data for my movies, photos and music as this machine will supplement my current Drobo storage.
My plans are for a 128GB SSD boot drive installed in one of the PCIe slots and then to load up all 4 of the 3.5" drive bays with WD Green hard drives. I have also ordered 4GB of replacement RAM, so upon removal of the faulty unit I will have 7GB.
Here is where I need advice because I am not very familiar with RAID and the differences between hardware or software raid. Am I better off getting four drives of the same size and setting them up as RAID 5 (I think) using Apple's RAID utility or should I throw in three 1TB drives and then install a fourth 3TB or 4TB drive as a Time Machine backup for the other three?
Should I upgrade the OSX to the technically unsupported latest version? Or is it not worth the trouble for this application?
Also, is there any benefit to upgrading the graphics card to the ATI Radeon 5770? Would this yield an improved image quality? I am outputting to a Denon AV Reciever and subsequently to a 100" projection screen, if that makes a difference. I also noticed the 5770 has an HDMI port, wich would be nice, but not necessary since I can use a DVI converter and woud still need to use the optical audio out anyway.
    Much obliged for any input

PCIe cards that use or support SSD are not bootable until you get to 2008 (and that is limited too).
Green are not suited for any form of array unless say NAS and WD RED.  Better option would be 3 x 2TB WD Blacks in a mirror, and too many people only use two drives, well 3 is much easier safer and works better. Might want to invest in www.SoftRAID.com product even.
Best price and quality, got my 1,1 with 8 x 2GB (ideal is 4 or 8 DIMMs)
    2x2GB FBDIMM DDR2 667MHz @ $25

  • Need advice on video software.

    Need advice on video software.
I currently use adobe elements 3 and have done so for a few years now with no problems. my os is XP and my system is a couple of years old, but we do have a brand new win7 machine in the house.
I am currently look at Cyberlink PowerDirector 8 Ultra OR Adobe Premiere Elements 8. Reviews for both softwares seem very good BUT, when I dig deeper into user reviews instead of editor reviews do I find problems.
Major problems with program crashing all over the place, at start up etc, and it is still not getting along with any win7 machine? Major problems with drivers. Honestly, I do not want to have to jump through dozens of hoops to get any software to run. After I pay for it, it should run, period.
Has anyone else here used both softwares and can you give an honest opinion of each?
I am also asking these same questions on the cyberlink site.
I would like to upgrade my video software to take advantage of the new features that are coming out but I really don't want a big headache trying to run one or the other. To be fair, when I bought adobe elements 3 I had also bought pinnacle, which has gathered dust since my first week with it, which is why elements was purchased. That was money wasted and I do not wish to repeat this. I would like to go with Premiere Elements 8 but remain very unsure.

If your newer machine is Win7 64-bit, it might be worth waiting for SP-1 to be issued, and then hope that 64-bit drivers are fully included. The 64-bit drivers now seem t be an issue at this point, and that will affect any NLE program.
Also, and regardless of which particular program you choose, optimizing your computer, the OS, the hardware, and the resources management, will go a very long way to insuring success. Few programs can tax a computer, as an NLE can - any NLE. Video and Audio editing will stress your system, like almost nothing else can, except for heavy-duty CAD, or 3D work, though those are usually done only on specialized, optimized computers, designed just for those applications.
Not the specific advice that you seek, but it's the best that I can do.
    Good luck,
    Hunt
