Need better understanding of password cache

This issue has also been submitted to iPlanet support.
In NSMS 4.15 p6, Solaris 2.6, two IMAP daemons, two mshttpd daemons:
I am trying to get a better understanding of password caching. See service.authcachettl and service.authcachesize in the NSMS tuning guide.
The guide says "The authentication cache ... is not shared between different processes". It also says "Its value should be greater than or equal to the number of users who have their mailbox on the machine to avoid pushing entries out of the cache before the TTLs expire."
Our user population is about 60% webmail, 40% IMAP. I turned logging for each of these to Debug level to see the password caching numbers. Here is a log entry for each of our four processes:
HTTP:
httpd[3568]: General Debug: Password cache: 7344 entries, 20635 hits, 57565 misses, 22651 collisions.
httpd[3564]: General Debug: Password cache: 7255 entries, 20573 hits, 57327 misses, 21798 collisions.
IMAP:
imapd[3515]: General Debug: Password cache: 4109 entries, 250843 hits, 73057 misses, 16132 collisions.
imapd[3522]: General Debug: Password cache: 4120 entries, 252521 hits, 93979 misses, 16582 collisions.
We have approximately 20,000 mailboxes so I set the cache size somewhat higher than that, but it appears that each daemon only needs around 5 to 10 thousand. Is that a setting for each process as is implied by the tuning guide? If so, why so they suggest setting it at the number of mailboxes? Does each process have to allocate memory for the auth cache at startup? Am I wasting memory?
Other questions I have:
What are collisions?
What are some possible explanations for such a poor hit to miss ratio in http?
From what time are these numbers? That is, is there any time at which they reset without restarting services?
Thanks.

It took awhile, but I got a response from iPlanet support. Look for responses interspersed with my original question below:

A: It has been confirmed that the cache size setting is per daemon. In our case with two each of mshttpd and imapd, we have allocated memory of four times the cache
size setting.
If so, why so they suggest setting it at the number of mailboxes?
A: The cache size will have some impact on collisions. See the question on collisions below.
Does each process have to allocate memory for the auth cache at startup?
A: Yes
Am I wasting memory?
A: Possibly not. See collisions below.
What are collisions?
A: iPlanet says "Collisions are when multiple uids have the same hash value in the cache. They only becomes a problem when the number of entries becomes close to the
max cache size. Since you have 7344 entries, you might want to increase service.authcachesize from the 10000 default to, say, 20000."
Comment: I infer from this that there is some hashing scheme that is dependent on the size of the cache and that with a larger cache we should have fewer collisions.
What are some possible explanations for such a poor hit to miss ratio in http?
A: Not answered by iPlanet. This is my speculation only, but it is likely that the pattern of use of webmail vs imap. The bulk of our webmail users are students who are more likely to sporadically wander over to a computer lab and check their email via the web rather than head back to thier dorm room and their own workstation. The vast majority of imap users are staff and faculty who spend more time at their own workstations, sign on in the morning and have their client check for new mail every 15 minutes or so.
From what time are these numbers?
A: Numbers are from the start of the services.
That is, is there any time at which they reset without restarting services?
A: No.
Additionally iPlanet provided:
"Miss - Is when one of the following happens:
1. no match for a given entry,
2. there is a match but this cache entry is expired,
3. entry is too long to be cached"
There was no further explanation of reason #3, which I think just begs for another question

  • Need help understanding the local caching of jnlp when creating it via jsp

I'm trying to deploy an app via Web Start. I have occasions when I need to pass arguments, so I'm using JSP to create the JNLP and optionally write arguments.
I need some help in figuring out how to cover my different use cases with as few different jnlps as possible and am confused about the local cacheing logic.
    Use 1
Initial install: I pass an init=yes url param which writes a preferences file <argument> to be passed to my app. I don't want this argument cached in my jnlp, as this will overwrite the user's preferences on subsequent launches.
    Use 2
Subsequent offline launches: no url params passed.
    Use 3
Launch via html link (in a CMS): passes a file=<filename> url param which creates a file <argument> for my app to open. Again, I don't want this argument cached, otherwise launching from, say, the desktop shortcut will reopen this file.
Can anyone explain how best to cover these three use cases?
    TIA!

Did you solve this cache problem? I have a similar issue where I don't want it to use the arguments over again...

  • I need to understand better, what can be done with sync and what cannot

i setup 2 windows boxes + 2 linux boxes to sync and got a mess in less than a day. apparently, i do not understand, what it does/should do, and what not.
As one having done work in distributed environments, namely in database replication scenarios, i understand, there have to be limitations, especially, as all of my 4 boxes are running most of the time.
next, i found, that copying profiles wouldnt have worked either, as the windows boxes (have to) use different add-ons/plugins compared to linux (like fireshot - to give a simple example - needed a replacement on linux). - So just moving profiles doesnt help. But the promise to catch open windows/tabs, history, and so forth doesnt seem to work either. Maybe TabMixPlus is killing the whole mechanism?
I found very detailed documentation on where to click to get it all started, but nothing about the internals nor limitations, thus being very disappointed now to find sync actually NOT working at all.
Furthermore, while setting up the whole thing, every machine had a "sync setting" as to how to use that one machine: initial distribution/sync/receiver only/and so forth. Does this only concern the initial setup? - I wasnt able to see this configuration option ever again to be able to change it after the initial setup had been done.
So i obviously need to understand better... as to me it looks like some real messy replication scenario, with not all backends sharing the same tables. And apparently adding/removing add-ons needs to get replicated manually anyway.
What time delay do i have to expect? When shall i use "Syncronize" manually? And so on...
I mean: I trusted Mozilla solution more than any other one, but it doesnt seem to live up to my expectations.
(sorry: i had to reenter the whole thing after my email address ran out)

Ok then! Thanks for answering!  Can you still transfer music over? I can't even get that to work! I have set my nephews up with no problem..obviously not a sec generation... please help again!

  • Serious security flaw: Can't clear password cache in iPhone 3G Safari!

One of the reasons I want an iPhone is so I can access the online membership database for my church. I recently went into the AT&T store to see if I could get to this password-protected site on an iPhone 3G. This is one of those sites that pops up a Windows NT-style password prompt, as opposed to a standard web form password.
After logging on and making sure it worked, I opened a blank page, closed out the site, went into Settings > Clear History, Clear Cache, Clear Cookies. The site was gone from history. But just to be safe I typed the URL in again to make sure the password was cleared. Guess what? It went straight in without prompting for a password! This is very dangerous in any situation, but since this was a public phone in an AT&T store I had a real dilemma as I'm responsible for keeping this membership data private. Sure, after clearing history people would have to guess at the URL but I didn't want to risk that. The AT&T salesman could not figure out how to completely clear the password cache, so we ended up doing a Reset All Data.
Please tell me there's another solution! If not, this would be an unacceptable security issue because whether it's a membership database or online banking, if I lose my iPhone it could spell disaster.

Hello there....welcome to the world of iPhone - where some of us have been here since the launch of the first iPhone. Obviously you have just had your iPhone for a few days. You will get over the typing issues. Just practice. You will stop hitting the send button as soon as you get used to typing.
As for the contact issues you have - You delete groups of contacts - or all - in whatever software you use on your computer to organize your contacts. Outlook? You don't need to save your contacts to a sim card as you have them on your BIG SIMCARD you are using right now....your computer.
If someone steals your phone and tries to change the sim card, Apple/AT&T have the ability to lock the phone down so it can't be used. I've had it done when my first phone was stolen.
There ya go. Welcome to the board.
Please choose to get to know your phone better before proclaiming it less than perfect. THANKS!

Hello congratulations for the work you have been developing. The apple support has helped me greatly improve my Mac and better understand some applications. Recently my iPhoto has given me problems and I do not realize what is happening. When I double click a photo it does not appear ... or rather the background is black and only the zoom window appears. How to solve this? I've done a restoration of the library, but the problem remains. Thanks and good job.

There are several possible causes for the Black Screen issue
    1. Permissions in the Library: Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Include the option to check and repair permissions.
    2. Minor Database corruption: Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild.
    3. A Damaged Photo: Select one of the affected photos in the iPhoto Window and right click on it. From the resulting menu select 'Show File (or 'Show Original File' if that's available). (On iPhoto 11 this option is under the File -> Reveal in Finder.) Will the file open in Preview? If not then the file is damaged. Time to restore from your back up.
    4. A corrupted iPhoto Cache: Trash the com.apple.iPhoto folder from HD/Users/Your Name/Library/ Caches...
    5. A corrupted preference file: Trash the com.apple.iPhoto.plist file from the HD/Users/ Your Name / library / preferences folder. (Remember you'll need to reset your User options afterwards. These include minor settings like the window colour and so on. Note: If you've moved your library you'll need to point iPhoto at it again.)
    If none of these help:
    As a Test:
Hold down the option (or alt) key key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Create Library'
Import a few pics into this new, blank library. Is the Problem repeated there?

  • I need help understanding how the Apple components integrate to create a system across all my devices?

I need help understanding how the Apple components connect to create a whole system across all my devices?
Is there a resource that describes current system and associated functionality?
    For example:
    Buy A, B, C to achieve "X"
    You will need:
an internet provider which supports <specs>
    add D to achieve "Y"
    You will need:
an internet provider which supports <specs>
    add "E" to achieve "Z"
    You will need:
an internet provider which supports <specs>
For example, I am looking at the Gen 6 Airport extreme.  For intended performance do I need broadband? if so what are the specs, or will basic internet service suffice?  Do I need the internet provider's modem or does the Airport extreme replace that?  And then I think, if I am doing this, I should also look at Apple TV....What do I need and Why?  Then I look at the New Desk top coming out in the fall, and I think well, if I wait and get this, what does this component do for the system, and what becomes redundant? What does this awesome desktop do for my ability to sit and use a new macbook air when I travel  or sit on the couch in my PJs?
If there was a place that plainly stated "if you buy the new dektop you can configure a system including only these components and achieve <this result> and by adding <additional components> you will achieve this result.
I have been to the genius store a few times, but I come out of there more confused unless I have SPECIFIC questions or already know what to buy.
A "System Configuration App" would be a really great sales tool--Just saying.

I have no idea what "fully optimized" means.
No Apple device will let you watch broadcast TV. The Apple TV is a good option for watching streaming TV from iTunes, NetFlix and Hulu. If you want to watch from other sources, you may need to look at other devices.
Any Mac computer or iPad will allow you to surf the web.
    What business software?
Time Capsule is a good option for back ups.
    Update what across all devices?
For accessing documents from all devices, a service like Dropbox is your best bet.
I have no idea what "step as far away from an internet provider as possible" means. If you want Internet access, you need an Internet provider.
Lighting fast speed for what? Processor? The specs are listed for all devices in the Online Store. Internet? We're back to the service provider.
Technology changes. The only way to keep pace with it beyond a couple of years is to buy new stuff.
The bottom line is you need to look at the specs for devices availble and at your budget and decide what best meets your needs. If you are unable to do that on your own, there are lot of technology consultants out there who will, for a fee, look at your exact situation, make recommendations and even handle the purchase and set up. Perhaps that would be the best route for you.
    Best of luck.

  • What's is the best way to use iPhoto? I need to understand.

What's is the best way to use iPhoto? I need to understand.
I guess the iPhoto is only for people with 5,000 of personal photos.
Or even 200,000, but they can't use this app everyday.
I'm not talk about working as a photographer. They use Aperture.
They may use iPhoto like a family album that you take a look sometimes.
And don't care about putting photos from the camera or from internet everyday.
I have tons of music and I love iTunes 8, works great. So I tried but I can't stand iPhoto anymore.
I have over 173,000 photos. My goal is organize, have total control, crop in Preview and delete them fast as I can.
The iPhoto is too slow. And is not only about performance, more RAM... but the whole concept.
Finder is much better/richer/flexible to organize than iPhoto.
I'm not talking about the photographer workflow.
And I'm not talking about editing and all these great photo features, the search, and all the iLife environment. They are amazing.
When I'm iPhoto, I feel like a prisioner.
I can't open an album/folder/event alone just to take a look, without do lanch the iPhoto app with the all thousand photos together. And it's slow.
I can't use Quick Look there.
So, I'll use Finder for manage/crop/etc. But what's the best way to use iPhoto in my case? Put the best/key ones there to use in iLife/MobileMe? To do a more serious editing? I like the features: keywords/ratings/hidden photos/events... It would be cool this features in Finder.
    For example:
iMovie: Manage movies? NO. It's editng only.
iTunes: Manage music/small video/podcast...? OK. Editing the song? OK for tags/convert/artwork/equalizer... For music there's a GarageBand of course.
iPhoto: Manage photos? Yes and No.
I think Finder would kill iPhoto incoporating all the editing features in Preview and the rich manage in Finder.
Jobs said that no one care about iDVD anymore. They care about the web.
Using iMovie to export to MobileMe.
Maybe iPhoto become less important in a near future. With a better Finder+Preview Right?
Sorry for this long text with a short question.
    Thanks.

Your post demonstrates exactly why I keep saying that iPhoto is not the application for you.
It would be better an iPhoto organizing photos by words like when iTunes browse his music.
Why on earth would anyone want to organise photos by words? A list mode is entirely pointless in a Photo application. That's like having an old photo album organised with the photos facing inwards so you can read the back of the picture.
Again, this is a characteristic of a File browser. You don't want a Photo organiser, you want a file organiser.
And, in iPhoto, you can search by tags, effortlessly in either the search box or by using a Smart Album.
iPhoto always loads all that events and all the thumbs library to scroll, and I think it's overkill.
So, how is iPhoto to know which ones you want to work with today? Open a library, get the Library.
Would be better a Cover Flow option to browsing in Events.
You've obviously never tried scrubbing along the Event icon.
Imagine iTunes using Cover Flow mode all the time. It won't be too useful.
Many, many people do, including myself on a library of 20k tracks totalling more that 100 gigs, and find it very useful. Same with the Finder.
And if when iTunes Store starts to sell photos?
Why on earth would the iTunes store start to sell photos?
    My photos are not junk,
I didn't say there were. Read my post again.
When I said Finder to crop photos I mean Preview. But I feel in Finder. Because what's in Preview? A photo opened with a Preview's menubar and some cocoa APIs like adjustments. Not?
Oh, so you don't count Preview as an application. Fine. It is an application but you don't feel it. As you wish.
My point to you is very simple: Because of the way you want to organise your pics - using lists views and so on - iPhoto is not the application for you. Don't use it. But you keep writing things about the application that are untrue, and I'm aware that other folks search these forums and I don't want them to have inaccurate information about iPhoto.

  • Need Help Understanding How To Use iMessage Between Two iPhones

I have an iPhone 4 and my wife an iPhone 3GS.  We both have iOS 5, but I have discovered something about iMessage I need to make sure I understand correctly.  As I understand it iMessage can send text even if our voice carrier service is unavailable.  I tend to loose signal inside the building I work in.  I usually can get texts in and out, but sometimes not.  But in testing the two phones sending iMessages, I've noticed is that if I have one of the phones with iMessage turned on and the other with iMessage turned off, the two phones will not be able to exchange text.  Is that how it's supposed to work?  Even though one of these phones can receive an iMessage doesn't mean the other one send one back.  Can't the system detect when one phone is connected and another one not, and the one that is not gets sent SMS messages instead?  I don't want to try to send my wife an iMessage because I can't get a voice signal in my building, but her have iMessages turned off and not able to get any messages from me, iMessage or SMS.  I guess I need help better understanding how this actually works between the two phones so I can always get texts back and forth between my wife and I.  My other misgiving is that this iMessage thing consumes my data limit.  My wife gets unlimited because she had her phone before the limits were imposed, but I got on board after, so I am hesitant to use iMessage all the time because of it.  I have no intention to send picture mail through iMessage, but the thing is if I wanted to switch to SMS to send picture mail to save data, but my wife's phone is set to iMessage, she won't get it.  If this is how this thing is supposed to work, I'm not really impressed.  Some insight would be appreciated

I think you are making this way too complicated. Why are you turning iMessage off? If you are at your office connect to the WiFi there and send your wife messages that way (unless your office is blocking the port iMessage uses). When possible the two phones will use iMessage but will revert to SMS is iMessage is not available if that option is set that way.
I would not worry about using up your data plan if you have the 2GB, text iMessages are going to be very small and MMS (picture) ones are not very large either. Unless you are sending hundreds of picture iMessages a day you will have a hard time using up your data.
If you are near an Apple Store you should explore signing up for an intro iPhone course and have them run through iMessage options.

    Hi CypherMike,
I 'm afraid you need to configure your Teaming mode to "Switch Dependent" "Address Hash" ,also the physical switch ports need corresponding configuration .
Specifically, I've seen the following usage scenarios arise where a switch dependent team mode is needed:
Physical servers with heavy inbound AND outbound network load
Virtual Machines that have a network load
greater than the bandwidth capacity of one NIC in the team
In these scenarios, you can configure the NIC team to use one of the "Switch Dependent" team modes by configuring the "Teaming Mode" to either of the following values:
LACP - if your network switch supports the Link Aggregation Control Protocol ( aka., 802.1ax ) for dynamic link aggregation.
Static - if your network switch doesn't support LACP and requires a static link aggregation configuration
Note that when configuring one of these "Switch Dependent" modes, you'll also need to configure your network switch to appropriately handle traffic the network team.
    Please refer to following blog:

  • IP - Trying to better understand FOREACH IN REFDATA

    Hi,
We would like to implement a copy function to copy actual data to plan (multi-provider). I know I'll need to use FOREACH IN REFDATA but I would like to better understand it.
If you use FOREACH IN REFDATA, will this loop over your reference data within each block of your plandata? For example if you have only two combinations in your plan data, will it then loop twice over the entire reference data (with the characteristics in the foreach in refdata loop)?
Will the FOREACH IN REFDATA also work even if you have no planning data at yet created?
=> we would like the budget process to start with a copy of actual data (to default data, but also to generate the most important combinations). We cannot use standard copy because there are some special items to be taken into account.
    regards
    D

    D,
This is my understanding.Say you have chars X,Y,Z in the agg level. You are using a filter(package) consisting of only X and Y.The filter leads to the construction of the planning blocks along with the fields to be changed.
Now in my Formula function , if I want to access the values of the char Z , I would use the FOREACH REF data for accessing the Z values. So it will loop exactly as many times as the combination of values permit for Char Z in the aggregation level.
Not sure how you are using this construct in your special case.

Reboot the machine holding Command and r keys down, you'll boot into Lion Recovery Partition
In there will be Disk Utility, use that to select your Lion OS X Partition and Repair Permissions.
After that is done reboot the machine and see if you can log in.
If not repeat the above steps to get into Lion Recovery, get online and reinstall Lion again, it will overwrite the installed version and hopefully after that it wil work.
    Reboot and try again.
If not follow my steps to create a Snow Leopard Data Recovery drive, then option boot from it and grab a copy of your files off the machine.
Then reinstall all your programs onto the external drive like setting up a new machine, then use Disk Utility to erase the entire internal boot drive (select the drive media on the far left, not the partiton slightly indented) format Option: GUID , 1 partition OS X Extended and then use Carbon Copy Cloner to clone the external to the newly formatted internal drive. Once that is finished reboot and disconnect the external drive.
Once you go that, boot into Snow Leopard and update to 10.6.8, use the AppStore and option click on Purchases and download Lion again and install.
Lots of work, but there is no Lion disks.

Turn your phone off and connect your cable to the computer, but not the device just yet. Start up iTunes. Now, hold down the home button on your phone and plug it in to the cable - don't let go of the button until iTunes tells you it's detected a phone in recovery mode. Now you can restore to factory settings.
Unfortunately, the data on your phone is already gone if you're seeing the connect to iTunes logo.

    Disabled
Place the iOS device in Recovery Mode and then connect to your computer and restore via iTunes. The iPod will be erased. That is how it works
iOS: Forgot passcode or device disabled
If recovery mode does not work try DFU mode.

    For how to restore:
    iTunes: Restoring iOS software
    To restore from backup see:
iOS: Back up and restore your iOS device with iCloud or iTunes
If you restore from iCloud backup the apps will be automatically downloaded. If you restore from iTunes backup the apps and music have to be in the iTunes library since synced media like apps and music are not included in the backup of the iOS device that iTunes makes.
You can redownload most iTunes purchases by:
Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store
If problem what happens or does not happen and when in the instructions? When you successfully get the iPod in recovery mode and connect to computer iTunes should say it found an iPod in recovery mode.

  • Password cache - for user identity that share the same application server

I have different user identity that share the same application server passwords.
When I create a password cache entry for an an application server I have to be specified the User identity for the application server. Is there a way to indicate multiple User identity in order to avoid to create different entry (one for each user identity)?

No. An SGD user can only have a single username for an application server.
There may be a way to craft a solution:
    - create several ENS application server objects pointing to the same real application server
    - cache different usernames against each ENS application server
    - create multiple, identical application objects, assigning a different application server to each, OR
    - create a single application object and assign all the ENS servers to it, along with the "SGD Broker" for dynamic launch.
