Need clarification on OPEN DATABASE options

Hello all:
After a smooth restore/recover of a closed, consistent backup (NOARCHIVELOG mode),
what are the options and ramifications for (NO)RESETLOGS?
RMAN reports ORA-01589 if only OPEN DATABASE cmd used, and it appears that NORESETLOGS is not valid.
Since the backup is consistent, what does RESETLOGS actually do in this case?
Here is my outline:
* Scenario: lost all files including CONTROLFILE, SPFILE, datafiles
* Backups created by RMAN available, including AUTOBACKUP
* Backups of Network and Database files
* (Re-)Install Oracle Database Software and re-establish services
* Connect to RMAN
* Ensure Instance is shutdown
* Set Database ID
* Start but do not mount the instance
* Recover SPFILE from AUTOBACKUP
* Create PFILE from SPFILE, examine it and verify initialization parameters, locations
* Restore Password file via COPY command
* Bounce database instance to ensure use of restored SPFILE initialization parameters
* Mount database
* Recover datafiles
RMAN> RUN {
RESTORE DATABASE;
RECOVER DATABASE NOREDO;
* Open Database ???
Thanks in advance for any help,
Bob

great Paul - thanks for the prompt reply, filling in those pesky gaps in my grey matter!
now let´s see: as I restored the control file from an RMAN autobackup of a database in NOARCHIVELOG mode, any backups registered in that control file (RMAN in NOCATALOG mode) should be unusable after RESETLOGS, true?
if so, then an immediate new closed, consistent backup and we´re off to the races again, yes?

    Aftershotz,
    You're going to have to give a bit more information.
    What do you mean by "opening a file in library?"  There is no function of Aperture to open files -- you can open (switch) libraries.
    You'll have to be more specific about error messages, too.  Perhaps some screenshots would be useful to diagnose your problem.  "Can't open database with library name" is not enough detail about what Aperture is really telling you.

  • Core + JNI binding cannot re-open database with log in mem option

    I am doing some tests with BDB Core using the JNI interface and I have so far found that the speed is much faster with the setLogInMemory(true) option set on the database. I know this puts durability at risk but assuming there is no crash and I successfully close the database I am not able to re-open the database.
    I am opening the DB with code like the following:
    public void setupEventDB(File envHome)
    throws DatabaseException, FileNotFoundException {
    EnvironmentConfig myEnvConfig = new EnvironmentConfig();
    myEnvConfig.setTransactional(_transactional);
    myEnvConfig.setAllowCreate(_allowCreate);
    myEnvConfig.setInitializeCache(true);
    myEnvConfig.setLogBufferSize(100000000);
    myEnvConfig.setLogInMemory(true); //Causes all logging to go to memory
    myEnvConfig.setPrivate(true);
    // Open the environment
    myEnv = new Environment(envHome, myEnvConfig);
    DatabaseConfig myDbConfig = new DatabaseConfig();
    myDbConfig.setReadOnly(_readOnly);
    myDbConfig.setTransactional(_transactional);
    myDbConfig.setAllowCreate(_allowCreate);
    myDbConfig.setType(DatabaseType.BTREE);
    // Now open, or create and open, our databases
    // Open the vendors and inventory databases
    eventDb = myEnv.openDatabase(null,
    "eventDB.db",
    "eventDB",
    myDbConfig);
    My basic test is the following:
    1. Open database
    2. Insert 10 million records
    3. Walk cursor across all records
    4. Close database
    5. Re open database
    6. Walk cursor again
    7. Close database
    Basically when I get to step 5 I get the following error:

    private void walkCursor() throws DatabaseException {
    System.out.println("Walking cursor");
    Cursor cursor = myDbEnv.getEventDB().openCursor(null, null);
    long count = 0;
    long beforeCursor = System.currentTimeMillis();
    PnRealTimeObj obj = new PnRealTimeObj();
    PnRealTimeObj temp = null;
    while(cursor.getNext(theKey, theData, null) == OperationStatus.SUCCESS){
    count ++;
    temp = (PnRealTimeObj) obj.entryToObject(theData);
    if(count != temp.getMsgId()){
    System.out.println("Count: "+count+" record: "+temp);
    cursor.close();
    long afterCursor = System.currentTimeMillis();
    System.out.println("End Scan Found : "+count+" records. Time delta: "+(afterCursor - beforeCursor)+ " ms");
    Interested in how you can get a DB with log in memory == true to open? I have tried this by starting a different program afterwords to just walk the cursor and that didn't work either. I am assuming it is complaining because there is no log but there isn't supposed to be a log with log in mem == true. I am assuming everything should get flushed to the DB when you close the database so it should still work?
    Thanks,
    Jared

    To answer your questions I was closing the DB and then closing the environment when I ran into this problem.
    I however was not using the remove call from the API it isn't clear to me when one should call remove and when one should call close? It appears that both put the environment in a terminal state and seems that remove uses slightly more forceful language and talks about removing environment files on disk.
    I did however as an update to this receive an answer from oracle from an email thread I had with them and was told that I should try the resetLogSequenceNumber command. I tried doing this between the DB close and the environment close and this seemed to do the trick. My code looked like the following:
    eventDb.close();
                        long logResetStart = System.currentTimeMillis();
                        File[] dbfiles = _envHome.listFiles(new FilenameFilter(){
                             @Override
                             public boolean accept(File arg0, String arg1) {
                                  if(arg1.endsWith(".db")){
                                       return true;
                                  }else{
                                       return false;
                        for(File dbfile:dbfiles){
                             System.out.println("Resetting log sequence number in: "+dbfile.getAbsolutePath());
                             myEnv.resetLogSequenceNumber(dbfile.getAbsolutePath(), false);
                        long logResetEnd = System.currentTimeMillis();
                        System.out.println("Elapsed time for log reset: "+(logResetEnd-logResetStart));
    =============
    As a side note it looks like the reset log sequence number call is fairly heavy weight operation it took on the order of 22 seconds to complete on my box.

  • My Catalog - "Can't open Database" error

    After being able to open Photoshop Album Starter Edition successfully and without incident several months ago, one day I received this error:
    "Problem opening the Catalog named "My Catalog". Another user or application may have the catalog open, or one or more files may be missing, out of date, or damaged. [Microsoft] [ODBC Microsoft Access 97 Driver] can't open database 'unknown'. It may not be a database that your application recognizes or the file may be corrupt. Attempt to compact and recover this catalog then try again? - OK or Cancel"
    If I choose OK, then I get another error:
    "Catalog Recovery Incomplete - A problem was encountered during catalog recovery. Your catalog may be ok, but if you experience problems with it that can't be resolved through the Reover Catalog option or restarting your computer system you may need to restore this catalog from a backup. - OK"
    That goes to a 3rd error message:
    "Unable to open "My Catalog because it is damaged. Please choose: Open existing or Create a new catalog named My Catalog-1.psa"
    If I choose existing, it goes to the folder where My Catalog is stored, I can click it, and then I receive the first message. If I choose create a new catalog, it does, then gives me the first error message. PSA SE never opens, but the photo downloader appears in my Task bar Notification area, and I can Launch, Enable/Disable or Exit that program. If I try to acquire a photo, I end up with the same first error message.
    I've seen the other threads that address what may be close to this issue, and I've done all the fixes suggested, short of reinstalling WindowsXP, which I'd rather avoid, but I've had no luck - I still get the exact same error messages.
    I am using Office 97, including Access, Word, Excel, etc. but I'm not having any issues with those. I'm also using Pagemaker 7.0 and no issues there related to a catalog or database. I did have at one time a trial copy of Illustrator, and this problem started occurring after that trial was expired. I've since uninstalled Illustrator, done all the fixes suggested here, deleted the My Catalog files, restarted, uninstalled and re-installed PSA SE3.2, and still it cannot 'see' My Catalog.
    Any other suggestions (besides upgrading to Office-this decade, which I would love, but employer hasn't made that leap yet.)? TIA
    Tracey

    No, no multiple users on this machine, or on that application. Both are located on the C: drive of a computer with intranet and internet access.
    Could it have anything to do with the application Microsoft Access? [Microsoft ODBC Access97 driver] is named in the first error message. Access97 was always on this computer, but it wasn't actually put into use until about 6-8 months ago, and it was sometime after I started using it that I could no longer open PSA-SE. Connection? Fixable?

    Oracle Database Installation Guide for Windows
    Create the new Oracle Database 10g Release 1 (10.1) service at the command prompt:
    C:\> ORADIM -NEW -SID SID [-INTPWD PASSWORD ]-MAXUSERS USERS
    -STARTMODE AUTO -PFILE ORACLE_HOME\DATABASE\INITSID.ORA
    The following table provides more information on the values you must supply.
    Parameter      Description
    SID     SID of the database you are upgrading
    PASSWORD     Password for the new Oracle Database 10g Release 1 (10.1) for 64-bit Windows database. This is the password for the user connected with SYSDBA privileges. The -INTPWD option is not required. If you do not specify it, then operating system authentication is used, and no password is required.
    USERS     Maximum number of users who can be granted SYSDBA and SYSOPER privileges
    ORACLE_HOME     Oracle home directory. Ensure that you specify the full path name with the -PFILE option, including drive letter of the Oracle home directory.
    Copy the 32-bit datafiles to the new 64-bit Oracle home.
    Copy the 32-bit configuration files to the 64-bit Oracle home.
    If your 32-bit initialization parameter file has an IFILE (include file) entry, then copy the file specified by the IFILE entry to the 64-bit Oracle home and edit the IFILE entry in the initialization parameter file to point to its new location.
    If you have a password file that resides in the 32-bit Oracle home, then copy the password file to the 64-bit Oracle home. The default 32-bit password file is located in ORACLE_BASE\ORACLE_HOME\database\pwdSID.ora., where SID is your Oracle instance ID.
    In the 64-bit Oracle home, add the _SYSTEM_TRIG_ENABLED = false parameter to the ORACLE_HOME\database\ORACLE_SID \init.ora file before changing the word size.
    Remove this parameter from the initialization file after the word size change is complete.

    Go to the 64-bit ORACLE_HOME\rdbms\admin directory from the command prompt.
    Start SQL*Plus:
    C:\> sqlplus /NOLOG
    Connect to the database instance as SYSDBA:
    SQL> CONNECT / AS SYSDBA;
    Re-create the 64-bit control files using the CREATE CONTROLFILE command. Edit the trace file created in "Backing Up a 32-Bit Oracle Database" to change the paths to the datafiles, log files and control files to point to the Oracle home on the 64-bit computer. This creates the new control file in ORACLE_HOME\database.
    Here is an example of a database named "orcl32" on a 32-bit computer migrating to "orcl64" on a 64-bit computer:

    Start the database in RESTRICT mode:
    SQL> STARTUP RESTRICT;
    You might need to use the PFILE option to specify the location of your initialization parameter file.
    Set the system to spool results to a log file for later verification of success. For example:
    SQL> SPOOL catoutw.log
    Enter the following command to view the output of the script on-screen:
    SQL> SET ECHO ON;
    Recompile existing PL/SQL modules in the format required by the 64-bit Oracle9i database:
    SQL> @utlirp.sql;
    Turn off the spooling of script results to the log file:
    SQL> SPOOL OFF;
    Check the spool file and verify that the packages and procedures compiled successfully. Correct any problems you find in this file.
    If you were viewing the output of catoutw.log on-screen, disable viewing now:
    SQL> SET ECHO OFF;
    Exit the RESTRICT database mode:
    SQL> ALTER SYSTEM DISABLE RESTRICTED SESSION;
    The word size of the 64-bit Oracle Database 10g Release 1 (10.1) database is changed. You can open the database for normal use.This is from the link

    Hey plf,
    Have you seen this Discussion Forum.   I think it is very similar to the error you are seeing.  Try the steps in there and if that fails then let me know and we'll see what else we can figure out.
    You need to open the Database.seq file inside of this directory: C:\Program Files\National Instruments\TestStand 3.1\Components\NI\Models\TestStandModels\Database  and go to the Edit Database Options from the View drop down.  Then you can right click on Create UUTResult and click on Specify Module.  Yours should be similar to the one I'm attaching.  Check and make sure it is.

  • Problem opening database after successfull recovery

    Hi All,
    Can any one please help me with below error.
    I am doing system copy from Source_SID to Target_SID taking online backup and generated offline redo log files during start of backup to end.
    We are on Windows 2003 server, DB is Oracle 10g and system is SRM 5.0. I was trying system copy backup/restore for DB and export/import for java. I have got online consistent backup along with offline redo logs of source system. Also have taken CI export.
    Here the file system directories in TARGET_SID and SOURCE_SID are different. First i have restored the online backup of Source_SID in Target_SID system (RYV). Took the trace file of Source_SID system and modified accordingly the filesystem structure directories of the TARGET SySTEM. Also renamed the TARGET_SID to SOURCE_SID.
    Now started it in nomount state with below command.
    SQL> STARTUP NOMOUNT PFILE=E:\ORACLE\RYV\102\database\initRYV.ora

    Before executing the command i have places all the offline redo log files which were generated in source system during the online backup. During online backup, offline redo logs 04729 to 04732 were generated. Now i have issued below command.

  • Need Help in opening a Link or URL

    Hi,
    I need help in opening a URL (on the same server where CLM application is deployed). I have added a Button on ToolBar and added the code. but it's not working. the same java program is working on my local system. below is the code.
    import java.io.*;
    import java.util.*;
    public class FileOpen
           public static void main(String[] args)
                 FileOpen deleteList = new FileOpen();
                 String url="http://www.google.com/";
                   try {
                        String[] cmd = new String[4];
                        cmd[0] = "cmd.exe";
                        cmd[1] = "/C";
                        cmd[2] = "start";
                        cmd[3] = "c:
    amd_SCCMLog.txt";
                        System.out.println(" cmd"+cmd);
                        Process p = Runtime.getRuntime().exec(cmd);
                        System.out.println(" cmd1"+cmd);
                        Process process = Runtime.getRuntime().exec("notepad");
                        System.out.println(" cmd2"+cmd);
                        } catch (IOException ioe)
                             ioe.printStackTrace();
                 //System.out.println("Memberfarm: " + memberFarm);
    Regards,
    Puneet Aggarwal

    Hi Puneet,
    What exactly are you trying to do? Can you describe where in the system you are doing it? There are different options....
    What about a document report with a link to the Web site URL you want to open?
    What about a read-only URL field on the document, populated with the URL you want to open?
    What about the desktop links channel?
    Lots of different ways to skin that cat (sorry cat lovers) ..your code looks like it might be the most difficult approach.

    You have the following choices to free up space from
    flash recovery area:
    1. Consider changing your RMAN retention policy.
    If you are using dataguard, then consider changing your
    RMAN archivelog deletion policy.
    2. Backup files to tertiary device such as tape using the
    RMAN command BACKUP RECOVERY AREA.
    3. Add disk space and increase the db_recovery_file_dest_size
    parameter to reflect the new space.
    4. Delete unncessary files using the RMAN DELETE command.
    If an OS command was used to delete files, then use
    RMAN CROSSCHECK and DELETE EXPIRED commands.

  • The "always open with-"  option doesn't work!

    Is there a way to get the "Always open with" option when doing a (control) (option) click on a file to actually ALWAYS open with the application I choose? Could this feature be broken or perhaps mislabeled?
    Here's what happens; I'll set a file to "always open with" one application. I work on that file and save it. The next time I try to open that file it opens with the snow leopard default application instead of using the application I directed it to "Always open with".
    I don't want to open every file type with this application so I'm not setting "apply to all" in the info window/ inspector, I simply want this one file to always open with the application I've selected.
    I'm hoping some of you super mac users will know a trick to make this work.

    I want to open a few select files with a non-default application (now that the creation code is not used.)...If I work on the file and make/save any changes, it reverts to the default app.
    Aha! Okay, I don't think any of us were getting that in the initial posts. You are correct. Snow Leopard no longer uses Type and Creator codes by default, but they are still there. Various things are keeping you from doing what you want.
    1) Newer programs that do not use Type and Creator codes at all still need a way to tell the OS what files belong to them. Since at least back as far as Leopard (likely earlier), the system now uses Uniform Type Identifiers. As far as keeping track of what files belong to what applications, they serve the same purpose as Type and Creator codes. So when you save changes, it will indeed revert back to the default app since the file once again gets saved with that program's UTI data.
    2) Some programs use both UTI and Type and Creator codes. Usually older apps that have come from PPC code. I would guess that would be either because the developer doesn't want to waste time removing the code that adds the Type and Creator codes to the files, or more likely, to make sure files passed to other users still on older Macs that don't use UTI won't have trouble opening them.
    3) I use some much older apps which have still not been rewritten at all for Intel Macs and are still all PPC code. They still write Type and Creator codes.

  • When I try downloading Kindle for PC Windows 8 I get the message "this link needs to be opened with an applicatio"-and I don't know what I have to do

    Hi, I have just brought a new laptop running windows 8 and have installed Firefox. My old laptop was running XP and I didn't have a problem running Firefox on it. I am trying to install Kindle for PC on my new laptop but I keep getting the message "this link needs to be opened with an application". I've never seen this message before on any web browser that I have used. I have "googled" the question and some suggestions are:
    > reloading Firefox-no point I've just loaded it
    > downloading through Internet Explorer-which I don't want to do as I want Firefox my browser of choice
    > Some talk of changing profiles-which I haven't a clue about.
    Any help in plain and simple English and assuming I have no prior knowledge (I'm a car driver rather than a mechanic) will be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks in advance

    I'm not familiar with downloads from the Windows 8 app store. Have you had problems with any other store downloads, or just this one? Is it an option to save the file?
