Need inputs on RMAN Backup n Recovery for multiple restore of clean backup

I will explain my scenario below:
We have the requirement of performance testing of our proposed production platform, for this i am asked to take RMAN backup of clean position (Say Day0 or baseline backup) and restore it multiple times for few rounds of testing. My question is after 1st restore (with set until time of day0 position) if i open the database with resetlogs, would i be able to restore same clean backup again? I am using control file in the environment instead of RMAN catalog database. What i can do to make this scenario work? I am already in preperation of setting rman catalog database.
Please suggest me the best way forward...
Many Thanks
Nukesh

Hi Asif,
I tried to make it work but seems there are still issue with my recovery, can you have a look and point out the shortcommings. i am totally lost here

  • Missing Recovery partition after restoring full TM backup

    Hello everyone,
I have a question for you Time Machine gurus. I have looked at pondini.org but could not find the answer. It is very possible I have overlooked it.
    Here is the scenario:
Macbook Pro with Lion 10.7.2. I connected 1TB USB drive. Formatted it.
Rebooted while holding Option+R. Had two options: Main Drive and Recovery HD. Took Main Drive.
Ran full TM machine backup to the external.
Rebooted while holding Option+R. Had three options: Main Drive, Recovery HD and TM Backup. Took TM Backup. It worked fine, everything looked good.
The next step may not make sense to you, but I have been having some performance issues with the MBP, so I decided to format the main drive and recover it from the TM backup so that the data would be contiguous. I have read countless articles in favor or against doing this. I just thought it made sense, based on many articles I read here.
I then, while running from the TM backup, formatted my main drive.
Next I did a full recovery of the main drive from the TM backup. Everything worked just fine and I am running ok at this time. Not sure it helped performance yet, but here is the question:
Once I reboot the system holding Option+R after the recovery, I only have two options: Main Drive and TM backup. Recovery HD is gone. So it seems that was either not backed up to TM to begin with or not recovered to the Main Drive during the full recovery. Any ideas? The goal was to have it still there in the Main Drive, although with a full TM backup I would not really need it unless I am away from my external, which could happen.
    Thanks for ideas or suggestions.
    M

You don't need to hold the R key.  Option invokes the Startup Manager, which shows all bootable volumes.
Or, you can hold Cmd+R to start from the Recovery HD on your Mac.
Once I reboot the system holding Option+R after the recovery, I only have two options: Main Drive and TM backup. Recovery HD is gone.
That's correct.  A full restore erases the entire OSX volume, including the Recovery HD.  (Just why it takes the Recovery HD isn't clear, but it does).
The only way to get a new one is to download a fresh copy of Lion, via the Recovery HD on the TM drive.
Once it's there, you can copy it to another drive if you want.  See:  OS X Lion: About Lion Recovery Disk Assistant (but you can't copy the one on your Time Machine drive).

  • Unable to Access Rescue & Recovery for Factory Restore

    Hi!
    Problem: Can't access {Rescue & Recovery (F11?)} on startup.
Keep in mind that my "Thinkvantage Toolbox" freezes everytime I try to launch it while I'm logged in. I can access the BIOS but when I try to either press F11 to get to Rescue and Recovery I get an error asking me if I wanna do a windows resume or a stuck key, same goes for the ThinkVantage button on startup that is.
Is it all linked to the fact that when I'm logged in and try to open ThinkVantage Toolbox it freezes? I tried to update everything from Lenovo and did nothing changed.
    Help  ! Thanks!!

    Hi,
I assume your problem is that when you press F11 at system start up, you can entering RnR PDA as expected?
If this is the issue, I need your help to provide below info for further analyze.Thanks.
    1.
under windows cmd line with admin privilege:
    bcdedit /enum all > c:\bcd.txt
=> this will generate a file named bcd.txt under C:\,  please collect it and send to me.
    2. Get me the disk partition layout info by below way:
        steps:
         a. run diskpart.exe with admin privilege
         b.  type list vol  and enter
         c.  type sel disk 0 and enter ( if there are more than one hard disks please choose the disk number of which C partition lies)
         d. type list par and enter
         e. get me a picture of all of the output..
    3.  find bmgr32.exe from " C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Lenovo\BMGR" or 32bit system from " C:\Program Files\Common Files\Lenovo\BMGR".
         run this command : bmgr32.exe /info > c:\bmgr32.txt and get me the "C:\bmgr32.txt"

  • Ipad 2- Failed Restore after 5.0. But it tried to backup again. Can I restore to previous backup or is all gone and overwritten?!?!

    This is what I did...
    Got latest Itunes...
9:30pm---Backed up and SYNCed my whole Ipad 2 which was a lil over 8GB onto my computer (LIKE AN HOUR)
**I had 2gb left free on my comp after that backup
Downloaded Ipad 2 (WIFI) direct 5.0 update file. (around 700mb)
    **around 1gb left on comp
    Shift+Restore>Selected the 5.0 update file
    UPDATED to 5.0
    Turned on Ipad
Selected "Restore Ipad", says its going to take 2 hours
Computer basically went to 0gb after an hour. which I dont know why it was trying to backup AGAIN for.
Itunes says restored failed. nothing on the Ipad, still on the "Connect to Itunes" screen. So I unplug n plug again. And it syncs n backsup for like 3 minutes.
I press restore again, it asks to restore to my 12:00midnight BACKUP?!?! not my 930 BACKUP?
Don't see any other option than just to do that one. It restores in about 2 minutes and I'm finally at the homescreen. NOTHING AT ALL except the apps that got synced.
Now I worry all is lost because now my computer says around 6gb free. What happend to my only having 1gb free after my 8 gb backup/sync?
Is there a way to restore from my wanted/initial/previous backup with all my photos n videos and everything??

It is possible that there is a problem with the files sessionstore.js and sessionstore.bak in the Firefox Profile Folder.
Delete the files sessionstore.js [2] and sessionstore.bak in the Firefox Profile Folder.
    * Help > Troubleshooting Information > Profile Directory: Open Containing Folder
    * http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_folder_-_Firefox
If you see files sessionstore-##.js with a number in the left part of the name like sessionstore-1.js then delete those as well.
Deleting sessionstore.js will cause App Tabs and Tab Groups and open and closed (undo) tabs to get lost, so you will have to create them again (make a note or bookmark them).

    Hi,
Nothing we can do actually, that's Microsoft's policy. I've got 2 machines run Windows 8.1 and 3 machines run Windows 8.1 upgraded. All I need: one copy and can applly for 3 machines (all are much better). Unfortunately I have to use Store for EACH machine to upgrade to Windows 8.1 if I have to restore.

  • Is it possible to copy iCloud backup to Mac for manual restore of iPhone?

Hey guys, thank you in advance for your help.
I've been backing up to icloud since I got my 4S, and have only been manually copying selected photos to my iPhoto library. Recently my camera roll and camera started acting strange (lagging, not loading/storing properly) so I wasn't surprised when iTunes told me I needed to update my iPhone software. When it tried to install the update, iTunes couldn't recognize the phone (not surprising considering how glitchy it had been) and told me I needed to restore the phone. Nbd, right?
I backed up to iCloud one last time, initiated the restore, and then went to bed. I woke up this morning to discover that fewer than half of my photos had been returned to my camera roll, and my photo stream had disappeared. I went into Settings-->General-->iCloud on my phone and it said the restore was incomplete. I got the restore back on track (it picked up where it had left off [thank Goodness] instead of starting over completely). It's currently creeping along, loading a new photo every few minutes, and videos are taking approximately a year each (I exaggerate, but only slightly).
Frustrated, I checked my photostream in iPhoto on my Mac to see if I could bypass the problem by using that to recover the photos from the past week (nearly everything valuable had been imported already). My plan was to scrap the restore and start fresh with an empty camera roll, re-populated via Photostream. But for some reason the photos and videos from the past week never made it to Photostream.
And thus, the waiting game continues.
In a nutshell: I need to know if it's possible to copy the iCloud folder that contains my full backup directly to my Mac and then do the restore from there.
Also, is it possible to backup the iPhone to iCloud AND your computer? iTunes makes it look like they're mutually exclusive, and as much as I appreciate the convenience and security of iCloud (i.e. having a backup in the event of loss, theft, etc. of phone and/or computer) I don't like being cut off from my data like this.
Thank you for your time; have an awesome day!:)

    No.

  • Solution Needed: Using VPN as a Jump off for multiple users to connect outbound to multiple 3rd party VPN

I work for a healthcare consulting company, we have 50+ consultants that work remotely from their home.  We currently are cloud managed and for various reasons are looking for a solution to streamline our connection to our Clinics' personal VPNs.  Our Clinics' VPNs vary greatly in regards to vendor and type of connection.
    What we want to do:
Create a Jumpoff where all our consultants (simultaneously as well) can remote VPN into. From there be able to jump out to any of our Clinics' VPNs.
We need this because we have some consultants with foreign IPs and we also want to connect from Google Chromebooks which don't play nice with every type of our Clinics' VPNs.  So the our Jump Off Box will have all the needed connections for any type of VPNs our Clinics use.
This solution should connect to our Clinics' side from their default VPN settings - Just a regular VPN connection from us to them.
From what I have been told is that this was attempted in the past:
Consultants VPN'd to our cloud server - RDPd to a machine and then VPNd out to our clinics. However this locked down the VPN and only one consultant could jump out.
What Cisco Product would allow us to do so?
How would this be set up?
Do we set up the Router to handle outbound connections?
Any input would be greatly appreciated.

  • Recovery of Database -- Restore from Cold Backup

    Hi All
I was trying to understand the possible failures so as to enhance my recovery capabilities of Oracle database 10.2.0.4.
We take weekly hot back up of the database on every sunday including archive logs. Archive logs are also backed up when the log_archive_dest_1 disk space utilization grows beyond 80%. All the backup goes into an alterate disk made available on the host. The archive back up is triggered mostly twice a week, on one of the thursday/friday/Saturday depending on the redo generation in that week.
Imagine we have a failure on thursday leading me to restore the complete database from backup taken on the earlier sunday. I also realise there is 1 archive log from tuesday missing and its not backed up for sure. I restore from backup and try to recover. As all the archive logs are available since Sunday till the point of failure except for that one missing file from Tuesday, I want to recover the database until the point of failure although there is one log sequence missing in archive destination. how can I do that? Is it possible? Please advice.
I remember reading on net that recover database command can be hinted by an init parameter so as it does not check for sequece numbers and continue to apply archives (does not check sequence numbers) as they are available. But I am not able to recollect it exactly. while I was searching on net, I came to this forum hoping if some one knew it.
Let me know if you know how to go about this. Thanks in advance.
    Sarat.

You cannot skip an archivelog (there is no init parameter to do so).
    Think about this :
Imagine that there is one very long transaction. A transaction that deletes or updates 1 million records. With the redo logs being, say, 100MB each, the transaction spans multiple redo logs.
These redo logs are archived as, say, sequence #121 to 128.
Supposing that sequnece #123 is deleted by mistake.
Can you recover the database with sequence# 121, 122, 124-128 ? Can that transaction be consistent ?
    OR think about this :
A redo log file is 99% full. A transaction for 1000 rows begins. All the redo entries for that transaction do not fit into that last 1%. The transaction spans into the next redo log file.
Can recovery be done with either of these missing ?
If you think through these scenarios, you will see that there will almost always be transactions spanning redo logs. That means, that you cannot skip redo logs during recovery.

  • Is there a way to backup SMS/imessage for complete restore?

I think there is a glitch on my phone somewhere, and i think that it might be in my phone backup so restoring from an earlier backup is not an option. What i want to do is to take the SMS/Imessage and whatsapp messages off of my phone and restore as a new phone. I have backed up my photos and videos to Dropbox and was wondering if i could do the same thing with my messages to later restore them on my phone?
    Thanks in advance

Do you have enough room on your internal drive to keep all your iTunes files?  Is that more or less how you are doing it now except for this cumbersome adding files one place then another?  If you do then you need to consolidate all your files onto the internal drive and periodically back up the entire iTunes folder to the external drive.
As for backup, Time Machine is one possibility.  I don't use it because it won't run on my computer.  I use CarbonCopyCloner.

  • Advice needed: many lines terminating to same user for multiple numbers...

In our situation, there are many numbers that can terminate into one user for many different reasons. I.E. A help line for product A, and a sales line for product B. Some users have up to 14 different numbers that they will be responsible for. It is a CCM 4.2 envorionment, with unity unified msg. The user needs to be able to differentiate between the called numbers. Aside from using multiple lines on a sidecar 7914, is there an alternate solution for changing the appearance of the called number? Would forwarded route points be able to pass calling and called line information via the 7960 screen?

Yes, that will work. Take a look at the following post for the required steps.

  • Need ONE Button That Controls Audio/Caption for Multiple Movies

    Captiate Version: 3
    Flash Version: 9
We created an online course using Captivate 3. The shell is HTML and the captivate (.swf) is embeded to show the content. Because the content inside the captivate movies were too large we had to break up the course into separate pages for loading purposes.
    For example:
    HTML Page            Captivate File
    page001.html         page001.swf
    page003.html         page003.swf
    page004.html         page004.swf
Now we need a way to use ONE Button to control the Audio/Caption for ALL the movies. The button would be included seperately in the HTML shell along with Captivate movie.
Is this possible? If so please let us know in detail how?
We're open to other ideas. We are somewhat familar with using Captivate variables ect is required.

You can control Captivate SWFs via JavaScript using the CaptivateController. It allows you to control all the standard Captivate variables from HTML.

  • List sql backups in a folder then restore the selected backup to the selected database

    Hi
I'm created a script that lists the backups in a folder then allows user input to select a backup.
It then needs to list the sql database on a specific server and accepts user input.
I can list the backups as follows
    $Dir = get-childitem $CurDir -recurse
    $List = $Dir | where {$_.extension -eq ".bak"}
    $List | format-table name
but what I want to know is how to format the list to have a number for the selection next to it?
How can I get a list of the sql databases on the server.
    Thanks
    Wayne
