Need more advice on overall back up strategy

Based on my previous post, "Need advice on setting up a portable external hard drive", I set up a portable backup strategy for the iBook G4 consisting of a 250 GB hard drive in a firewire enclosure which contains two bootable clones. In a similar fashion, I set up a 320 GB drive in a firewire enclosure which also has two bootable clones and also an empty partition for the MBP.
Also, I have a 160 GB La Cie firewire desktop drive that was purchased in November of 2006 which has Time Machine and some other backups on it, some of which are unique.
Since I had to dig pretty deep into the piggy bank to buy the drives and enclosures, I really don't want to buy any more hardware for a while. I also didn't expect I would have to worry about archiving anything for a while since I thought I had lots of capacity, so I hadn't intended to post this question for a while. However, circumstances have changed rather suddenly.
After getting the logic board reballed and replacing the original 30 GB hard drive with the 120 GB drive, I decided to give the iBook to my rather cyberphobic Significant Other, along with a red iPod, a DynoScope, and the 250 GB backup drive as a first computer, little realizing what was about to happen. Even after 27 years of marriage, someone can still surprise you.
My SO started digitizing our music collection, and once all the CD's were put into iTunes, started in on the vinyl collection. The iPod is already full, and both cyberphobia and hard drive space are rapidly evaporating. The vinyl files seem to be much bigger than the CD files. The 120 GB internal drive and 250 GB external drive that seemed so huge is now beginning to look too small. The overall strategy is still fine, but I'm about 60 GB's away from having to archive some of the music collection to free up more hard drive space both on the internal drive and on the backup clones. On general principles, I would rather do the archive on a third drive, and this drive does not need to be portable.
I do have quite a bit of excess capacity on my MBP and MBP backup drive, and perhaps this could be utilized in the short term. I could use the La Cie, but the problem is that an archive would likely use up most of the free space remaining.
So what I probably need advice on is what to plan on setting up that will accommodate both computers. The iBook is running Tiger and has iLife 06 on it. The MBP has Leopard and is running iLife 08. I already know that if a photo is in iPhoto 08 it cannot be put into iPhoto 06. I don't know how it works with iTunes--both computers seem to have the same version of iTunes--v. 7.6.1. So I don't know if the iBook needs to have a separate drive or if it could use the same drive as the MBP.
Also, I am wondering if there is any way of finding out about impending failure of an external hard drive since S.M.A.R.T. status is not supported. I can verify the disk using Disk Utility, but was wondering if there was anything else to do other than pay attention to how old it is and how noisy it is. I imagine it is still true that over time, all hard drives will fail.
Would setting up a RAID be something to consider? Does that give some protection against the failure of individual hard drives? (I don't know much about RAIDS.)
I apologize for the length of this post. I wanted to try and include all the relevant information about my situation. There seem to be so many possible options that I am in a real quandary about just what to do, both for the short term and for the longer term. But I would like to have a sensible long term plan worked out in advance, so that when the time does come to buy more hardware, I will have a clear idea of what to get and how best to set it up. Any advice and help will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance!

Thanks for responding!
You are right about the AIFF format. I will have to burn the DVD's on my MBP since the iBook can only burn CD's, but I don't see any problem about doing this except for a question about DVD's.
I have read several times about CD's degrading over time so that the data is lost and the CD's just turn into little gold frisbees. I think this is mostly true of the super cheap store brands, and I don't know if it's also true of DVD's.
So I am wondering about the projected life span of whatever DVD's I choose to burn onto, and also, how best to store them. I have a stack of Verbatim DVD's which are supposed to be a good brand, and I have a much smaller stack of Archival Gold (by Delkin) which are supposed to be good for 100 years. 100 years is probably in excess of what we really need, but I would like to think in 10 or 20 or 30 years, the DVD's would still be good. If not, then I just need to know how often to reburn them.
I tend to worry about the longevity of digital media. I had burned the iPhoto library onto inexpensive CD's, and used these to put it on the iBook. On every disc, there were unreadable files. The iBook can't read one of our purchased CD's, even though we have played it many times elsewhere. We'll try it on the MBP and another external CD drive that we have to see if we can digitize it.
I think the DVD's for the large vinyl files are a great idea and I will plan to start doing this at some point soon. I will also burn either CD's or a DVD of anything which is an only copy. Right now there aren't many of those, but of course that could change and probably will.
I can see we need to sort a few things out, but I think the road ahead is much more clear now. I addition to the original CD's and DVD's that I plan to burn, I will probably still keep redundant copies the entire iTunes library on a couple of different hard drives, since I have a lot of capacity open on the MBP. The music itself will be well backed up with discs, but since it has taken so many hours so far to put music into the library and will take many hours more, I also want to be sure in a way to back up those many hours of effort.
Thank you very much for all your help. I want to keep this topic open a bit longer in case my SO has any further questions, but I think my concerns are pretty well answered.
Many thanks again!

    Delete the old backups..
    There is a reason though for this to happen. Tell us what model Time Capsule you are using and what size disk it has .. how much free space is available and how much is now required. If you upgraded to Mavericks it probably needs to do a whole new  backup and simply doesn't have the space .. nor can it delete the old backup.
    Please read Pondini FAQ for details of these issues.. deleting backups for example Q12

  • Opinions - time for a new computer?  need more RAM, Time Machine back up full - get new computer?

    I am in a quandary.  My early 2008 iMac needs more Ram.  I could upgrade from 2gb to 4gb for around $60.  My 1T external hard drive for Time Machine is full and I do not relish the idea of it erasing old data if I continue to use it this way, but then I am shelling out more money for a new hard drive.  Can get new 3T hd for about $200.  Is it worth it to shore up my computer?  I have recently upgraded OS to ML and it is really starting to act sluggish.  I hate the idea of having to transfer everything over to a new Mac and therefore new OS.   I need a working computer every day for business for my husband, so it would be impossible to go without a computer while things are being transferred over - and how long would it take for me to do that.  Plus, will files and photos be transferred over exactly as I have organized them?  I have spent a lot of time organizing bookmark folders in Safari, mailboxes in Mail and albums and folders in iPhoto.  Don't want to start from scratch again.   Also don't like the idea that the new iMacs don't have a slot for dvds and cds, playing and burning.  I do a lot of this kind of thing.  So then I would need to buy a separate thing for doing this as well as the computer itself.  Have wondered how many things have changed from ML to Maverick.  Another big learning curve???
    Would really appreciate any thoughts and opinions.  I am a senior citizen and don't know how to sort through this.  One thing I think about is that I don't know how much longer I will be living and able to do computer work. I know everything is a risk, but would like some advice even if it is only an opinion.

    It's probably time for a new machine. You won't have to start from scratch. Migration Assistant will bring over all of your data and apps (some may need to be re-activated using product keys). Depending on how much you actually have, a few hours should be all it takes over Ethernet.
    Time Machine should continually erase the oldest backups when it needs space for new ones.
    You might want to do both. Upgrade the RAM in the old machine to the max it will take, and buy a new machine as well. If your husband really needs a machine available all the time for business, having a 'spare' is a good thing.
    Check out what's available in the refurb store. They are virtually indistinguishable from new retail stock and come with a full warranty. You can save hundreds.

  • Start up disk is full, and need new storage and back up strategy

    I am maxed out on nothing my iMac and Mac book pro and recognise I need to introduce a new external hard drive into the equation.
    I currently have an apple time capsule with 2gb drive, that backs up the 600g iMac and 250g mac book.
    I would like to understand if I could point applications such as iTunes, iPhoto and iMovie towards an external drive ( as long as it is always connected to either the machine...or perhaps network so all machines have access to the external drive)....and hopefully I would also be able to access my iTunes library ( on the external drive) via an Apple TV...without any fuss.
    I would also like to use my apple time capsule to back up from both the iMac and Mac book internal drives...as well as recognising the data on the external drives that points to the respective computers.....eg the iTunes library etc.
    Is this at all possible???
    If so, which external hard drive solutions should I use ( I have seen some mention synology...but looked at the website, and so many models and not sure what I would need)???
    And how would I go about lifting and shifting data, redirecting applications to read and write to external drives, and getting time capsule to back up as above.....and possibly even have an additional back up strategy that allows me to take regular copies of all hard drives and keep content in an off site location for data security...possibly in a bootable format???
    Welcome all help and advice please.

    You should never, EVER let a conputer hard drive get completely full, EVER!
    With Macs and OS X, you shouldn't let the hard drive get below 15 GBs or less of free data space.
    If it does, it's time for some hard drive housecleaning.
    Follow some of my tips for cleaning out, deleting and archiving data from your Mac's internal hard drive.
    Have you emptied your iMac's Trash icon in the Dock?
    If you use iPhoto, iPhoto has its own trash that needs to be emptied, also.
    If you store images in other locations other than iPhoto, then you will have to weed through these to determine what to archive and what to delete.
    If you use Apple Mail app, Apple Mail also has its own trash area that needs to be emptied, too!
    Delete any old or no longer needed emails and/or archive to disc, flash drives or external hard drive, older emails you want to save.
    Other things you can do to gain space.
    Once you have around 15 GBs regained, do a search, download and install OmniDisk Sweeper.
    This app will help you locate files that you can move/archive and/or delete from your system.
    STAY AWAY FROM DELETING ANY FILES FROM OS X SYSTEM FOLDER!
    Look through your Documents folder and delete any type of old useless type files like "Read Me" type files.
    Again, archive to disc, flash drives, ext. hard drives or delete any old documents you no longer use or immediately need.
    Look in your Applications folder, if you have applications you haven't used in a long time, if the app doesn't have a dedicated uninstaller, then you can simply drag it into the OS X Trash icon. IF the application has an uninstaller app, then use it to completely delete the app from your Mac.
    Download an app called OnyX for your version of OS X.
    When you install and launch it, let it do its initial automatic tests, then go to the cleaning and maintenance tabs and run the maintenance tabs that let OnyX clean out all web browser cache files, web browser histories, system cache files, delete old error log files.
    Typically, iTunes and iPhoto libraries are the biggest users of HD space.
    move these files/data off of your internal drive to the external hard drive and deleted off of the internal hard drive.
    If you have any other large folders of personal data or projects, these should be archived or moved, also, to the optical discs, flash drives or external hard drive and then either archived to disc and/or deleted off your internal hard drive.
    Good Luck!

  • Icloud needs more storage to back up

    my friend is trying to back up her memory on her phone and it says she needs more storage.

    Then her choices are to either purchase more storage (see http://support.apple.com/kb/ht4874), or reduce the storage currently being used in her iCloud account (see http://support.apple.com/kb/ht4847).  One thing she can check to reduce the size of her backup are photos and videos attached to her text messages.  These are all backed up and deleting them may significantly reduce the size of the backup.

  • HT201250 I'm using a back-up drive because I need more space.

    I have set up time machine, but it keeps saying that it will delete old backups?
    If, for example, I wanted to delete my entire iphoto album because it is taking up too much room, will it still be there? Because, with the fact that it updates hourly and states that it will 'delete old back-ups' does that mean that at one point, the 'old back-up' that contains all my photos could disappear? Really need help here!! I'm finding it difficult to explain so if you need more explanation, then please let me know!!

    Backups are extra copies of original files, in case there's a problem with the originals.
    They are not extra space for the "overflow" that won't fit on your internal HD.
    That's true of all backup apps, but since Time Machine does automatically delete things, you should never delete originals intentionally.  Depending on when backups are run, the backup copies may be deleted in as little as 24 hours, or kept for as long as there's room on the backup drive.
    For best results, you need another external HD to copy the "overflow" files to, then delete from your Mac's HD.
    And have Time Machine back up both your Mac's internal HD and the storage drive.
    Be sure to format a storage drive for a Mac, so Time Machine can back it up, per #1 in Using Disk Utility.
    To have it backed-up by Time Machine, remove it from the exclusion list in Time Machine Preferences > Options, by selecting it and clicking the minus sign.
    Most files can be just dragged to the storage drive via the Finder.
    For some other files you might want to move, see:

    WooHooooooo! Another quick update, only 5 minutes ago I found this link on credit karma http://www.creditonecards.com/pre-qualification.php?C1BSourceID=C1B1  that lets you prequalify for a credit card! Which I have tried many many many times  only to recieve the message sorry we couldn't prequalify you at this time but here are some SECURED cards you may like which sucks! I decided to try one more time at this link and was totally surprised to get preapproval for a platinum card yay! Mind you, this card is probably the worst card to get and I will probably never ever use it, just need it to help with my utilization scores. The fees are high, the rates are high, the balance is low........but oh well I am still doing the happy dance!!!

I tried to keep it short  Last time I was on I hadn’t reached the 600 club yet. But I am here now in the 600 club! Still the low 600’s but its progress. Unfortunately slow progress because a lot has happened since I was last on here. I am now officially divorced. I finally have permanent steady income, no temp services anymore phew. I have had to reevaluate my budget and cut a lot of things out. No cable, no home phone, monitor my electric bill like a hawk and learn to like the darkness, cold in the winter and the heat in the summer. I have paid nearly everything off! It took some time but I only have 2 creditors left ‘that I know of’ to pay.One of the creditors has not reported to the bureaus yet but I want to take care of them before they do. Most of the ones I paid have already fallen off because of SOL. I was getting to the point I had the problem where I didn’t just have bad credit, I had NO credit. I hadn’t opened any new accounts until this year. Just today I opened a $500 Secured Personal loan and a few months ago I opened a $300 Secured Credit Card at my credit union. I also applied for a Quicksilver CapOne card and was approved for $300. I just started school this year and there is now a financial aid loan of $1750 that is reporting on my credit report as deferred right now. I tried to prequal for some more but was denied by all of them. So far only quicksilver would approve me.  My plans are to move out of state next May and get an apartment for 6 months while I get the lay of the land and then purchase my FIRST home!! • Reinstalled iTunes and need to get music files back on

    Hi Everybody.
    Basically, I had to reinstall my iTunes software after my ipod broke and they gave me a new one. I am running iTunes 4 I think, because for some reason it is the only on that wants to work on our computer.
    The new iPod is working fine, and so is iTunes, but our music files didn't come back up automatically and I need some advice for getting them back on itunes. I've played with it a bit, but I didn't want to go clicking and dragging a bunch of folders to where they might not belong.
    Thanks, if you can offer me any help it will be much appreciated. Sean

    However, all signs point to "I erased all my itunes music files."
    Bummer
    is there anything else to try or is my music gone?
    Do you still have all or most or some of your music on the iPod? If so:
    These links will give you several methods of recovering whatever songs remain on your iPod; some free, some third-party software, some more comprehensive for restoring Playlists, Ratings, Play Counts, etc. Read them and their associated links before deciding on a strategy that works for you. There are many various third-party software programs that will offer a more robust process, or an easier GUI. Do a Google search for them if the links below leave you wanting…
    Don King Resurrected: Deleted files from hard drive (free user steps – music recovery only)
    MacMuse: Computer Crashed (free user steps – music recovery only)
    Copying music from iPod to computer (a primer on various methods and software)

    iPodRip Software (Free trial: Mac & Windows)
    PodUtil Software (Mac & Windows)
    YamiPod Software (Free: Mac & Windows)
    PodPlus Software (Windows)
    TuneJack Software (Windows)
    Senuti (Mac OS X v10.3 or higher Recovery Utility)
    XPlay (Windows software For Music Recovery &/or Cross-Platform Functionality)
    XPlay Photo Browser (For recovering Photos)
    Extremely Simple & Free Method: (just to recover the song files – may not work on a Mac)
    1 - Open iTunes
    2 - Edit=>Preferences=>’Advanced/General’ tab
    2a --- Select ‘Copy files to iTunes Music folder when adding to library’: checked
    2b --- Select ‘Keep iTunes Music folder organized’: checked
    2c --- Click OK to store changes
    3 - Attach your iPod to the PC and hold down the ‘Shift+Ctrl’ keys until the iPod is fully recognized (this will defeat the auto-sync process)
    4 - If you get a dialog box to link the Library, decline this option
    5 - Within iTunes: Edit=>Preferences=>’iPod’ tab: switch iPod to manual transfer – click ‘OK’
    6 – Eject iPod
    7 – Close iTunes, then reopen iTunes and attach the iPod (it’s in manual sync now)
    8 – File=>Add Folder
    9 - Browse to and open ‘My Computer’ (click on the ‘+’) and select the iPod (or the lower ‘\iPod_Control’ sub-folder)
    10 - Click OK
    -- The music files should start to transfer back into iTunes with its correct information
    –-- This will take some time depending on your PC’s speed and the amount of songs on the iPod
    No Playlists, or Ratings, Last Played, & Play Count attributes will be transferred from the iPod to iTunes using this method.
    If you have problems with seeing the iPod within 'My Computer', try again switching your update method to 'manual', detach the iPod, then reconnect the iPod to the PC.
    After recovering your Library, strongly consider developing a thorough and frequent backup strategy for just this type of situation (and many other potential disasters).
    You need at least two full sets of your music, not including what is on the iPod:
    -- One full set on the PC within iTunes (on internal HD or ExHD)
    -- One full set on an separate external backup medium (CD/DVD/ExHD/other)
    -- One (full or partial) set on the iPod
    Music files on just the iPod and only one other medium is not considered having any backup.
    If you cannot store your complete music files on the computer’s internal HD, then create and maintain at least two external sets (any multiple combinations of ExHDs, DVDs, CDs).
    Backup both the music files and the Library database file (iTunes Library.itl). What are the iTunes Library files?

  • How large of a hard drive can I install on dual G5, and do I need more RAM?

    I recently had a situation in which my dual-processor 2.0 G5 was completely refurbished by Apple repair-new logic board, both processors, video card, thermistor, all new. Finally it has been working well after a month of trips back and forth from the Apple store. I have two internal hard drives installed on my G5, both 300GB, one for OS applications, and one for audio. I am running out of space on my main hard drive, and so I recently purchased a Maxtor 1TB hard drive, now manufactured by Seagate, from Fry's. After having my G5 refurbished, I was having an issue with my Samsung 930B monitor going into sleep mode when I boot-up from a CD, but other than that G5 was working fine. I removed the main 300GB hard drive from slot #1 and put it into slot #2, from which I had removed my audio hard drive. I installed the Maxtor drive in slot #1 and reformatted it for Mac using my laptop with ATA/USB cables previously purchased for data transfer. This took about 14 hours as I used the "zeros" option. After that I hooked up the internal cables to both drives and tried to boot up from Leopard in order to install it on the Maxtor drive, but again my monitor went into to sleep mode. We went to the Apple store to try to see if there was an issue with the computer, but everything worked fine with their monitors and CD's, as well as my CD. So there is some kind of issue with my monitor, probably software as it works fine when booting up from the main hard drive, and also was fine when I did its self-test function. While at the Apple store, they installed Leopard from their hard drive which took about 30 minutes.
    My problem is this: When I arrived home, I turned on my G5, which had been set to boot from my new Maxtor drive and complete the Leopard setup process, which we had decided to do at home as it would have taken another 20 minutes in the Apple store. The G5 turned on, chimed, I got the Apple screen with the wheel, but then after that my monitor goes into sleep mode. I can hear Leopard's setup intro playing through the speakers, but the screen is in sleep mode. So I reboot holding down the option key so I can boot up from my old (300GB) main hard drive, now in slot #2. This works and the monitor screen does not go to sleep. However, as I am browsing on the web to check for issues concerning this monitor, the G5 freezes, and I get a screen with black bars with writing in them and various technical language across the screen. This happened several times after rebooting. Finally I shut the computer down. I am going to try removing the new hard drive and putting both old ones back in and see if the G5 stops crashing. I think the monitor issue is a separate issue, and I am more concerned with the crashing, as previous to the new hard drive installation the G5 was working fine, monitor fine, other than the issue when booting up from a CD. Do I need more memory? Is the 1TB hard drive too large for my dual-processor 2.0 G5 and overloading it? Would I be better off with a 500GB drive? Would appreciate advice from persons with experience in this area. Thank you.

    I have replaced my 5 year old G5 with a Mac Pro, as the G5 just had too many issues, even after replacing all major components (logic board, both processors, video card, etc.) Once I took out the 1 TB hard drive from my old G5, it stopped having the kernel panic issue. Nonetheless I had been through a lengthy repair process previous to this issue, so I didn't care to trust an older machine any longer, especially since being told by an Apple tech that the "new" parts were really just older parts stockpiled from a central location. Could be new, could be refurbished. Apple was kind enough to credit the money we had spent on the G5 repairs towards the purchase of my Mac Pro.

  • TX2Z - 5 days of use: my initial impression, issues and need for advice

    Hello All,
    I have had my TX2Z for a complete 5 days now. Prior to purchasing, i had a Dell 700m for almost 4 years. When I bougt the Dell, i got it loaded with a 2GHz Intel processor, 2GB RAM, 120GB HDD, XP Pro, etc.  It is a brilliant machine and I really enjoyed it...it was good to me and I really can say I never had any issues with it.  I took care of it and it returned the favor.  I upgraded to Vista Business back in November and it was still great.  In fact, I still think it out performs (in terms of speed and stability), most other new laptops owned by my collegues. However, for work, i really needed a tablet and although i read some bad reviews about the TX2Z, i read many more good reviews.  So a couple of weeks ago, I called them and ordered a pretty loaded one.  I have the 2.4GHz processor, 4GB RAM, Vista Ultimate 64 bit, 250GB 7200 RPM HDD, etc.  I assumed it would be quite fast since reviews i read stated the standard 2.2GHz processor was sufficient.
    So it came in last Tuesday and I began the migration process.  I did a lot of reserach online about what bloatware to remove and did so.  Between work and time at home, it took me 2 days to get everything to migrate over from my Dell and install my applications. I partitioned the HD and put my data on the new partition.  Outlook migration was quite bothersome to say the least.
    I've had a lot of strange issues and had to do a lot of reserach to find fixes but it seems random new issues pop up from time to time.  They may be small, but i'm not too technical so I just expect things to work as they did on my Dell for so long.
    1. I feel its very slow. When you click on something, like when going through email in Outlook, the email just doesn't show up in the preview pane right away...it takes anywhere from 3-5 seconds...something that was instant before.  Same thing when doing many other things...I feel like even web browsing has slowed down. i have defragmented, cleaned, optimized, etc...still inadequate.
    2. I feel its very delicate.  I've had it freeze on me a couple of times and today, i booted up and logged in and it went to some other profile on the computer with a message stating that there was an issue with my user profile.  scared me, but i restarted and then it booted into my profile.  then when i booted up again later, it did the same thing!  thank God this time it was fine on the first go, but now i feel i have to worry about that every time i boot up...not a cool feeling.
    3. I'm trying to get used to the tablet portion of it, but i feel it can be a little annoying sometimes.  i won't complain much about it though because I think i need more practice first.  i can write pretty well, but drawing on teh screen, the main reason for my using it, isn't that friendly...i always have to put the screen up to access teh keyboard and touchpad to really have what i want happen...i can't just do everything from the tablet.
    4. heat: ive seen many people complain about this...it really is annoying how much heat comes out of this thing.  i have to keep a folded cloth on my lap so it doesn't bother me.
    5. fan: again, another concern i see expressed a lot...very annoying so i try to use only when unplugged and charge when i'm not using it.  for the heat issue and the fan...i don't understand why HP doesn't use something else...i mean in this day and age, when they know this is a known issue on other models, why would they use it again?
    so that's pretty much all i can think of now.  i do like a number of things too, but i really would like advice on the above.  i know a lot of you will say just to wipe everything out and start over, but is there any other way to run some tests to see what the issue is?  i really don't want to go through another 2 day process. also, if i have to do this, is there a better way to migrate programs and data to an external HD and then back?  i just moved my data to an external HD and basically just installed software using discs and internet downloads...took forever!
    what about these recover discs i hear a lot aboutt?  if i make them now, will they keep all current data and configurations too or just the original OS?
    sorry for the long post, but would like some help on what to do.  i need to have some confidence built in me about this machine and some reassuracne that i should be happy for the next 2-3 years.  TIA.

    4. A swipe gesture to the apps screen.
    hmmm this is actually a not bad idea!

  • Business Delegate pattern - need some advice

    Hi. First let me apologize for the long post. I could see no other way. Im building a system that quite large and I need some advice. The system is a type of transaction system, lets suppose a shopping cart. Im using struts taglibs and tiles for presentation, struts proper for controller, and POJOs for business logic. Also Im using OJB for my data tier.
    Now Ive been reading Pro Jakarta Struts (Apress), which BTW is a recommended read to anyone with novice experience in struts and related technologies. Ive assimilated most of the techniques and patterns described in the book, and most of them make sense to me. However, Ive hit a snag while reading the Business Delegate and Service Locator patterns.
    The way I had though of building my application before reading the book, was to have a wrapper class, such as the following:
    public class ShoppingCart {
      private IAuthenticationService authenticationService;
      private ITransactionService transactionService;
      public ShoppingCart() {
         authenticationService = new DBAuthenticationService();
         authenticationService = new DBTransactionService();
      public login(String username, String password) {
         String sessionToken = authenticationService.logon(username, password);
         return sessionToken;
      private boolean isValidUser(sessionToken) {
         bolean validUser =  authenticationService.isValidUser(sessionToken);
         return validUser;
      public performTransaction(sessionToken, TransactionVO) {
         if (!isValidUser(sessionToken) {
              throw new AuthenticationException();
         transcationService.performTransaction(TransactionVO);
      public editPreferences(sessionToken, PreferencesVO) {
         if (!isValidUser(sessionToken) {
              throw new AuthenticationException();
         authenticationService.performTransaction(PreferencesVO);
    }My idea was that my wrapper class would isolate all the business logic and could perform login service in case my application was ever to be used with other presentation layer than struts (standalone client, web services). However I believe that this overlaps the Business Delegate pattern and maybe even totally implements it. The way I understand the code Im reading in the book, they suggest having a BD for each major service such as AuthenticationServiceBD, TransactionServiceBD, etc However this would break my single point of entry for authenticating users. I really need some advice on my design and how it fits with the BD and SL patterns (or others). I would also like to know what you think/recommend of my authentication strategy.
    thanks in advance
    Raphael

    Thanks for your reply. This however, I understood. My concern is regarding my application in regards to business delegate pattern. You see I have this class (simplified for clarity):
    public class ShoppingCart {
       private ILoginService ls = new DBLoginService();
       private ITransactionService ts = new DBTransService();
       // and so on for all services I offer.
       //  then I mirror all the calls of my private interfaces
       //  and pass them through internally
       public String sessionToken login(String username, String password) {
            ls.login(username, password);
       public boolean addToCart(sessionToken, itemNo) {
            // check session
            ts.addToCart(sessionToken, itemNo);
       //  and so on
    }Multiple questions for this one:
    1) Am I not already implementing the Business Delegate pattern with my ShoppingCart class since all interfaces are private and all calls are mirrored from the wrapper class (ShoppingCart) to the private interfaces? All services are implemented as POJOs and I am not using JNDI at the present so I don't use the ServiceLocator pattern.
    2) I store a reference to the wrapper class (ShoppingCart) in the ServletContext so I can grab it from my Action classes. What do you think of this approach?
    3) How many BDs should an application contain. In my case I use just one. What is the advantage of using more?
    4) I create my own session tokens in case I ever want to use to business code in a non-web applications where sessions are not available readily. This brings about the problem that I can't pass the interfaces directly to the Action classes because the login session needs to be checked before any calls to services. So all methods include a sessionToken parameter which I use to check the session. This way, if I want to expose some of the services through web services, I can still use a login. What do you think of this approach.
    5) Any other remarks are very welcome...
    I really need help with this from an experienced programmer. Most things I can handle on my own but with this type of design issue, books just don't cut it. I need experience. I would really apreciate some feedback.

    ps: I would give all my Duke dollars for this (I only have 30), but I'm not sure how. If you want them I can create a dummy question and give them to you.
