Need opinions: Flash Drive Vs. Diskettes.

I can't backup on CD's because I have to erase the entire CD-RW to rewrite on it. That means when to backup a few files: I have to put an entire CD contents on my desktop, replace the new files, erase the CD, store the desktop files back to the CD, trash the desktop files.
I needed a system where I can just "drag and drop" a new file to the backup device and it will copy over one file at a time. So I've been using flash drives because it's just too clumsy using the external diskette drive. And it works nicely EXCEPT:
Filing those little flashdrive bugs is just way harder than marking and filing the flat diskettes.
I STILL think Apple should have continued putting diskette drives in Mac for a few years more. You?
j.

Hi, j.
it was easier to label and file those nice flat little square diskettes than these tiny plastic spaceships. Am I right?
Yes.
But newer media takes up so much less space... even a single Zip100 = 70 floppies; that's a half-drawer of floppies on one disk. A handful of Zip250 disks can replace an entire cabinet of floppies.
We don't get something for nothing. Today's files, with the current capabilities of color depth, text styling, embedded graphics and (if needed) fonts, plus the machines' capabilities of handling large files with ease, have routinely become so large that often a floppy is not large enough to hold more than a single file, if that.
And, with the advent of affordable software to create audio and video compositions as well as complex graphics files, file storage needs have mushroomed well past the limitations of floppies.
It would not surprise me if CD and DVD file storage has surpassed the use of other media. DVD-RAM disks in particular can be useful in that they behave like a large floppy - individual files can be copied to them or removed from them.
I like firewire hard drives - easy, simple, highly transportable, and safe for the data.

  • Leopard to Snow Leopard can i use a large flash drive to backup first?

I've been using Leopard for 4 years with no problems.
Since Google decided to stop support for Leopard, and I use Chrome a lot I decided to upgrade.  I won't be upgrading to Mountain Lion right right away. I ordered my Snow Leopard disks from Apple.
I understand that I need to backup.  I want to backup with Time Machine before I upgrade the OS, but I don't have $75+ right now to purchase an external hard drive for this purpose only.
Can I use a large Flash Drive to run Time Machine?  Like a 32 GB?   I know that flash drives have a limited number of writes on them and can go bad, so I am thinking I could just use it this one time to make sure I have a clean backup.  If this is possible, then can I set up Time Machine again later when I have an external drive?
Also, I have 2 cores on my Mac, but I have no idea how to use the 2nd core.
I'm also not sure if I need to purchase a specific external drive because I have a mac.
    Thanks for the help.

If you only need to make a full backup prior to upgrading, I would suggest using SuperDuper, which for creating a full, bootable clone is free. (It is not free when you start needing to make incremental backups, but you won't be doing that, at least not right now.) For a bootable clone, you only need a Flash drive (or external drive) as big as the total size of the utilized space on your hard drive right now, not as big as whatever the entire drive size is.
In the past, I would have recommended Carbon Copy Cloner for this, but it's no longer free or donation-ware and you don't have the budget for both that and some kind of external or Flash drive.
    http://www.shirt-pocket.com/SuperDuper/SuperDuperDescription.html
You might also want to look around newegg.com for inexpensive USB external drives, or even large enough Flash drives. You'll probably find a much less expensive external hard drive than a Flash drive for this purpose.
You do not need to use Time Machine, but even if you did you could just make one full backup to a Flash or external drive and then unmount and disconnect it. An external for TM only needs to be so large because it's constantly taking snapshots of your drive and those add up. But you won't be using it that way.
Anyway, I think you're much better off with a bootable clone, should you need to restore that.
Don't worry about having 2 cores; that's nothing to do with backing up.

  • Does Solaris Volume Manager support USB flash drives?

Never mind. The answer appears to be no, but I don't need the flash drives now anyways.

  • HT1751 I need to uninstall and reinstall iTunes (it won't let me update). So, how do I copy or back up my iTunes library of over 1,500 songs? Can I use a Flash Drive to do so?

I need to uninstall and reinstall iTunes (it won't let me update). I have IE 8 on Windows XP, and iTunes 10 something. In my Program files list I see iTunes and iTunes (2) and even iPod and iPod (2) where a tech had to back up and do this for me before. I'm just trying to fix it all. I keep getting the "The feature you are trying to use is on a network resource that is unavailable. Click OK to try again, or enter an alternate path to a folder containing the installation package 'iTunes.msi' in the box below." I can even run a search and find the folder, but it gives me the same error message. I was planning on using the Microsoft Fix-It tool  to help uninstall then Reinstall iTunes. But I need to backup my library. So, how do I copy or back up my iTunes library of over 1,500 songs? Can I copy the folder to desktop or can I use a Flash Drive to backup my music? I don't want to do anything until I know for sure how I can backup my songs, and then reinstall them into iTunes. Thanks for any help.

Ok, thanks that helps. I don't have an external hard drive though. What about backing up through 'the cloud'? I'm just wondering since my husband syncs his iPod to the PC through iTunes and he's worried that he will lose all the songs on his iPod if the library is lost from iTunes and he tries to 'sync' it up again. I'm not exactly sure how to  'copy the entire iTunes folder' either. I kinda suck at this unless I have step by step instructions, which I haven't found yet on iTunes help or other sources.
The only way I know how to back anything up is by going back to a restore point, etc. (as stated before, we don't have an external hard drive.)
    Thanks for the info.

Hold down the Option key while you boot your Mac. Then, it should show you a selection of devices. Click your flash drive and it will boot from that.

Can I purchase Mountain Lion and make a flash drive bootable? I do not want to install it on my Macbook Pro. I have Snow Leopard on my Macbook Pro now, and due to my hard drive needing repair, I need to boot off of another source, like my flash drive. I am in Paris and my Snow Leopard DVD is in Texas.

Mac OS X has a built-in disk diagnostic and repair program called fsck or file system consistency check. Here’s how to verify and repair your startup disk with fsck.  As soon as you hear the startup tone, press and hold Command-S on the keyboard. Keep holding down those keys until you see a black screen with white lettering. This is called “booting into Single User Mode.”  As the Mac boots in this mode, the screen reports each step of the process. The line should end in root#.  Right after the root# prompt, enter the following: /sbin/fsck -fy
If repairing the disk in single user mode fails, it means one of two things. Either your hard drive itself is failing (a hardware failure), or the directory damage on your hard drive is beyond the capability of the built-in repair procedures in OS X.

My assistant and I are using two Lightrooms (i.e. two serial numbers) and need to share between our two computers. I provide originals to her onto a flash drive. She tags them and returns them to me. I then copy the photos from her flash drive onto my computer and load them in my LR. The photos appear but witthout any editing or tagging. We need to be able to have her working on the photos on her computer with her copy of LR and me on my computer with my version of LR being able to access what is already tagged and given back to me. This seems hard. We need advice on if it is at all possible to have two computers simultaneously working on LR . I bought her her own version because I was told at the time of purchasing that that was the only way to share. Please advise urgently! Thanks.

Sounds like your assistant isn't instructing Lightroom to write the tagging and editing to the files themselves, so wehn the files return to you, they don't have editing and tagging information. She need to select the photos in Lightroom and then Ctrl-S (Cmd-S on Mac). Or alternatively turn on the option to autmoatically write this information to the files.
If you are using RAW photos, then this information will be written to a sidecar XMP file, and your assistant must provide you with the sidecar file. If these photos are not RAW photos, then the information is written directly into the photo file itself.
Lightroom wasn't designed to be a multi-user program, and so it is truly not possible to have two people working on the same catalog at once. The way you are doing things, as modified above, is probably the way to go.
As an alternative, you can transfer (portions of) catalogs as well as photos back and forth and then all of these issues disappear, but a catalog might be rather large for a flash drive (or maybe not, it depends)

  • I need help installing reinstalling Windows 8 from factory supplied flash drive please

I recently bought an Acer Aspire V5 laptop with Windows 8.  I installed Ubuntu to take advantage of a few applications I like, and then realized that two of the main business applications that I need would not run on Ubuntu (none of the Windows emulators
    would work).
Before I installed Ubuntu, I created a recovery image on a flash drive, but that failed when I tried to go back to Windows.  I ordered a new recovery flash drive from Acer, and I get the following error- restore failed- can not find image path:M:\recovery
    image\install.wim.
The acer support person advised me to use a third party application to format the hard drive, so I used gparted to complete the format.  I attempted to restore the disk again (using the exact instructions from this forum), and I get the same error.
While the flash drive is attempting to  restore the factory image, I do see that the recovery image drive M created, and the install.wim being applied.
Does anybody have any ideas how I can fix this issue?  Thank you in advance.

    Hi,
A recovery flash drive cannot function as a installation disc, thus I suggest you contact the Acer for the right process of restoring the image. Especially for the requirements for the restore condition.

  • I need to re-download Mac OS X Mountain Lion to put the installer onto a flash drive to perform a clean re-install, Will I need to buy the software again?

It says on the Mac App Store "You have already got OS X Mountain Lion on your computer, would you still like to download?"
Will it charge me £13. again if i choose ok???

Not if you download it from your Purchases page. Click on Purchase icon in the App Store toolbar.
BTW, you don't need to put Mountain Lion on a flash drive for a clean install:
Install or Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion from Scratch
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Erase the hard drive:
      1. Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
      2. After DU loads select your startup volume (usually Macintosh HD) from the
left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
      3. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Optionally, click on
the Security button and set the Zero Data option to one-pass. Click on
the Erase button and wait until the process has completed.
      4. Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion and click on the Install button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
because it is three times faster than wireless.

  • I need more space to make my windows 7 partition. Can I make that partition on a USB flash drive so I can use it when I want and still have my full ssd when I don't? Do you guys know of any ways to do this?

I am considering buying a 128 gb MacBook air and I will need to make a windows partition. I would like to be able to use all of my ssd do I was wondering if I could put my windows partition on a small USB flash drive to use when I want to. Do you know if any programs or techniques capable of this?

Csound1 What Ive been trying to explain is that I have been running bootcamp, I open the app where the first screen is the introduction, i hit continue, the first time I select "download the latest windows support software fromm Apple" then I return and instead select "Install Windows 7." Then hit continue. The third screen is where I "Create a Partition for Windows" I set Windows to 80 gigs then hit INSTALL. As stated before Bootcamp cannot find the install drivers saying "The installer disc could not be found." My windows software is on a USB drive not a disc, I tried using a virtual disc reader to make it appear that the windows software was running on a disc, still no luck. What I would like to know is how to install windows on bootcamp.

Just edited 20 film in FCPx all about 6 mins long all on 1 x 250gb flash drive
Now i have another 10 to do but have no room on that drive.
So i have been using my new 2tb drive to do the next 10 films with the footage on that drive, but i need elements from the first 20 films ie; graphics, common film elements etc to be added to the new 10 films.
So I have copied all the footage, events and project folders from the 20 edited films over to my 2tb drive in a separate folder - ejected the 250gb drive (as i only have 2 thunderbolt slots and one is used for a 27 inch monitor on my macbook pro)
.......my question is how do i load all of the 20 films into my project library so i can see all of the 30 films at once so i can copy and paste form one film to another - is this possible? and withlout messing up lol

// any reason, why you color your post to 'invisible' low contrasted colors?? //
    I'm confused:
by concept, there's Events and there's Projects.
Events and Projects can be internal or on any ext. drive.
You can use any Event in any Project.
… so, why is the 'location' of your files on any relevance for your Projects ??
    Or, do you want to re-import done-Projects as 'Events'? Export,Import, done… (??)
… sorry, maybe I'm just lost intranslation
