Need to automate resizing of 1000s of images

I have approximately 7000 images they are either 400 pixels tall or wide or 450 pixels tall or wide. This are product images and Amazon requires the images be 1000 pixels wide or tall. Is there a way to automate the process so PS recognizes longest side and it height/width and enlarges to 1000 pixels. If so, what is the magic formula?
Thanks in advance for your help.

Yes you would be better off staring with bigger image file.  Then all you need is a single step action that you batch.  The single step in the required action is menu "File>Automate>Fit Image" in the fit images dialog you enter 1000  for both width and height and Click OK.  The 1000 width and height gets recorded into the action step and no dialog is displayed when the action is used.  Once you have that action you batch it on your image file using menu "File>Automate>Batch" in the batch dialog you select which action set you fit image action is in.  You the select your 1000x1000 fit image action in that set.  You select which folder your large image files are in and you set which folder to save the resized images in.
Batch should be faster then the Image processor for the image processor is a script and it uses the Automate Plug-in script Fit Image to do its resizing,  Batch is a Built in Photoshop Plug-in and should execute faster for it is doing less and is compiled code not an interpreted script

  • Neither Automatically Resize nor Zoom to Fit working

    Hello out there in Appleland,
Neither Automatically Resize nor Zoom to Fit is working in Preview 5.0.3 under Snow Leopard.  Zoom to Fit acts just like Actual Size or <Command> 0 and Automatically resize doesn't work at all.  This must be and bug, so please explain how this can be permanently fixed, even at the command line level.
    Thank you.
    Best regards,
    Bob
    Denver, CO

I've found out a little more about Preview and its bug through a process of elimination.
After examining Automatically Resize for Preview 3.0.9 on my old PowerBook G4 with OS 10.4.11, Preview 4.1 on my iMac with OS 10.5.8, and now Preview 5.0.3 on my MacBook Pro with OS 10.6.8, I discovered they all work the same way.  When Automatically Resize is checked the image is only resized when the window is reduced but never when the window is enlarged to a size greater than the image's Actual Size, which is a worthless feature for smaller images.  I don't think this is the way it is supposed to work, but I may be wrong.
Where 5.0.3 differs from the other versions of Preview is in Zoom to Fit.  Under the View Menu, Zoom to Fit is grayed out unless the image stretches beyond the borders of the window (i.e. Automatically Resize toggled off).  In this case, the image will be reduced to the size of the window when Zoom to Fit is selected.  On the other hand, if the image is smaller than the size of the window, Zoom to Fit is not grayed out but neither does it enlarge the image to the size of the window when selected.  In other words, Zoom to Fit in 5.0.3 is only good for reducing an image to fill a smaller window but never for enlarging an image to fill a bigger window if that window is larger than the Actual Size of the image.
Perhaps the problem is with Preview 5.0.3 failing to access com.apple.Preview.ImageSizingPresets.plist since removing all the Preview plists and launching the application anew does not recreate this particular plist.  Also, the modified date on the original com.apple.Preview.ImageSizingPresets.plist never seems to change.
This is a damned annoying bug and should have been fixed when Snow Leopard was the standard.  In my opinion, the fact that this wasn't caught reveals Apple's slipping standards and a concentration on their growing market in mobile devices.  I feel I have a right to say this since I've been a loyal Mac user since the early 1980s.
For those who suggest I move to Lion or beyond, you can keep the economy going with your new software purchases.  For now, I'm going to continue using Rosetta and my old, third-party applications in Snow Leopard.

  • Automate / Batch cropping 1000 images... not working properly

    Hi all,
I may just be missing something here. If I open an image in photoshop and crop it, the image shows up at the new cropped size and I can then save the new image. I have 1000 people images with all different sizes but the same ratio. My hope is to create an action that crops a photo to a standard size and then saves into another folder.
So I started my new action and did the crop and saved. Then I ran this action using automate and batch. The processing does happen but the images are cropped and then remain in a black box the size of the original photo. This is a problem for me... I only want to see the resized photo.
Any idea where I'm going wrong?
Thank you very much in advance

How about using the Image Processor?  It should do that process.
Select your images in Bridge and then click on Tools/photoshop/image processor.
The image processor wll still need an action for it does not crop. The Image Processor also can not replace the original files.   If all images are the same size and aspect ratio to begin with it would be easy to create an action to do the crop.  Best done with the rectangle selection to and image crop.  Only those two steps would be needed in the adtion.  Once you have recorded the action it can batch. Set the batch dialog to process you folder of same size images and have it save over the original files or save in a new filder. No save is needed in the action.
If images vary in size and aspect ratio you would need to some plugins or scripts in an action. You can download my crafting actions package it contains a couple of plug-in scripts that are useful for croping images.

  • I need advice on how to increase pixels (to 1000+) on images currently in the 6-700 range

    Hello,
I need some assistance. I am new to Adobe Photoshop.  I need to increase the pixels to around 1000 from the current 6-700 the images currently have.  The photoprinting company I use told me I could do it on Adobe.  Any help would be appreciated.  Rich Shay [email protected]

You may think you need a solution to change existing small images to make them larger, but keep in mind that what they may really be saying to you is that you need to prepare the images so that they end up with more than 600 to 700 pixels width to begin with, so that the images have enough detail that they'll look good and crisp in the prints.  To advise you further on doing this, you'll need to describe a bit about where you get your images initially and how you process them into these small versions.
If you really DO need to upsample existing small images to try to give the visual impression they have more detail in them, just doing Image - Image Size isn't really going to help - they'll still look fuzzy.  BUT...  There are a couple of pretty cool (and reasonably expensive) plug-ins that do some fancy shenanigans to make images seem to have more detail than they really do...  You might want to try out either the Perfect Resize 7 plug-in by OnOne Software, or the Blow Up 3 plug-in by Alien Skin software.

  • I need some help resizing my images on PS6. I am using a mac and have been trying to resize with same resolution and constaining proportions but for some reaseon the smaller resized image appears pizelated.

I need some help resizing my images on PS6. I am using a mac and have been trying to resize with same resolution and constaining proportions but for some reaseon the smaller resized image appears pizelated. Heres an image of before and after. The first image I use is a JPG 72dpi 1500px x1500px and I want to downsize it to 600x600px same res, but it keeps pixelating, this has never happened before. Any suggestions, thoughts?
    thanks!

I wouldn't say pixelated; more like blurry.
Like ConnectedCreative said, what steps are you using? Are you using "bicubic sharper" when resizing down?

  • Image automatically resizing when moved onto a new tab

When I'm moving a picture onto a canvas, it is automatically resized to a very small size. I wish only for the picture to move onto the canvas, then still keeping it's size. Afterwards, I wish to resize it myself using ctrl + t but the automatic small size is preventing me from making it better size, and less pixelated.
Does anyone has a solution to turn off this automatic resizing?

What resolution is the canvas and what size is the image (in pixels). Go to Image > Image Size...

  • Pasting an image as new layer: Any way to turn off automatic resize?

If I paste a large image onto a smaller one, CS5 will automatically resize it so that it fits in the frame. You can then manually transform it back into its original size but this is inconvenient for what I'm doing, so I was wondering if there was a way to turn that off so that it keeps the original size (with parts of the layer ending up off-screen). Even better would be if I could just paste without automatically entering free transform, as with the earlier versions of Photoshop.
    Thanks in advance.

You can disable "free transform" in the Preferences/General

  • Auto resize window when opening image.

How do you make the whole window automatically resize to fit your screen without covering the palletts?  Everythime I open an image the window is hidden by the pallets. I then have to move the pallets out of the way, resize the window to fit my monitor, move the pallets back and Im ready to go. This is such a pain. I want the tools pallet to be on the left, the action and history, etc. on the right, and I want the window with all my image tabs to fit between those from top to bottom and from side to side automatically. I never had this problem in earlier versions. I have cs5.
    Thank you!

I don't need the image to be full screen, just the window. And the window is not technically full screen, because you can still see the window borders and the panels. I want the image window with the different image tabs to open as big as my screen. I want the edges to come right up next to my panels and the bottom to go down to the bottom of my screen. For example: I use Mac and when you close a finder window and open a new one, it will open at the same size that you closed it. If you resize it, lets say, to fill your entire screen, close it and then reopen it, it will open the same size as you closed it. I don't want photoshop to open new image windows to the same dimension as the image. I want a grey screen to cover my entire monitor just like in CS3 and before. I really like the tabs, but I want the window to open bigger with grey space arround the image.

  • Need to automate DVD Production

I have customers who buy customized DVDs. The customer selects about 30 short training videos from a library of about 1000. The order arrives as a text listing of the videos that need to end up on DVD. I need to automate the process of putting those videos on a DVD, along with menus. Can anyone get me headed in the right direction?

    Patrick,
Sounds like you have a perfect project for your own 'into to AppleScript' course. Your project a few steps, but not too many, and each step is not terribly complex, but not too simple.
Break each of the steps down and script each one, then tie them all together.
From what you describe there are two major parts; getting all the info together and burning the disk.
Copying files from a list is pretty easy. I think I would look at using a disk image. I am not a pro at disk burning, but I have been annoyed that Apple caches a disk image before burning. I was using Toast which would directly write a disk from an image. In your production environment a direct burn will mean higher throughput.
If you want to take this on yourself jump in and when you get stuck ask for help. I hope you will find that the more focused the question the more focused your response from this community.
    Good luck,
    Reese

  • Resizing large quantites of images using image processor - STUCK

I have upgraded to Photoshop CC. I am attempting to resize large quantites of images using the image processor. I need both the width and height set to an exact number for web use. When I enter the pixel size into the "resize" boxes and click run, the sizes i get are correct on one dimension but slightly off on the other dimension. When I just do one image at a time to these same dimensions it resizes correctly? It appears it only does when selecting large qunatites. Any suggestions?die

Since you do not want to crop your images to a square 1:1 aspect ratio changing the canvas to be square will not make your images square they will retain their Aspect Ratio and  image size will be changer to fit within your 1020 px square. There will be a border or borders on a side or two borders on opposite sides.   You do not need a script because Photoshop ships with a Plug-in script to be used in Actions.   What is good about Plugins is the support Actions.  When you record the action the plug-in during action recording records the setting you use in its dialog into  the actions step.  When the Action is played the Plug-in use the recorded setting an bypasses displaying its dialog. So the Action can be Batch.  The Action you would record would have two  Steps.   Step 1  menu File>Automate>Fit Image... in the Fit Image dialog enter 1020 in the width and height  fields.  Step 2 Canvas size enter 1020 pixels in width and height  not relative leave the anchor point centered it you want even borders on two sides set color to white in the canvas size dialog. You can batch the action.
The above script will also work. Its squares the document then re-sizes to 1020x1020  the action re-sizes the image to fit with in an area 1020 x 1020 then add any missing canvas. The script like the action only process one image so it would also need to be batched. Record the script into and action and batch the action. As the author wrote. The script re size canvas did not specify an anchor point so the default center anchor point is uses  like the action canvas will be added to two sides.

  • Iphoto is automatically resizing all my pics

after i edit my photos on iphoto, i like to post them on my blog, or send them to a friend. however, i've noticed that wherever i upload, and however i send them, they are automatically resized to a pretty small size. but when i view them on iphoto, they are at normal resolution and cover my entire screen. i don't have a problem with everything already being resized for me before i post online, that actually saves tons of time, but i was wondering where/how these settings can be adjusted so i can have larger resized pictures.

There are a couple of places where you can set the image size when sharing your photographs. If you would like to email larger or even FULL-SIZE images, go through the normal process of emailing: 1) Select photos 2) Click Email button at bottom of window. When the dialog window comes up for email settings, there is a popup menu that allows you to pick three scaled sizes or actual size.
Another option for exporting your photos is of course the Export function, which you get from the File menu. This will give you a dialog that allows you to select the size of the export image.
When you export to iWeb's blog template, your image is scaled to the size of the image placeholder on the blog page. What's the secret of larger photos there? Well it is a bit tricky, but once you figure it out, it isn't so bad.
    1) Go to the blog page on which your photo appears. The photo will appear at the top of the page and have a frame around it.
    2) Select the frame around the image first. Click it "i" icon to bring up the inspector palette. Click on the little ruler icon on the inspector. There is a checkbox on the palette that says "Constrain proportions" You want to turn this off, so that you can resize one dimension if need be.
    3) Now select the actual image. If you want to size a single dimension, repeat the process you used in step 2 on the image frame. Note that the placeholder will distort the image if you stretch the image along one dimension. This is not a bad thing... you can fix this pretty easily.
    4) If you distorted the image in step 3 because of your desire of a different sized image frame, first press the Media button at the bottom of the window in iWeb.
    5) Scroll through and find the original image that you had exported from iWeb and that first showed up on the blog page.
    6) Drag that image into the placeholder and it will replace the stretched image, properly scaled and cropped.
    There ya go!

  • Resizing browser to background image size

I am trying to redo my website and I want to have a large landscape image on the opening page and for the browser to automatically resize to the proportions of the images and for the image to change in size when the browser window is changed in size.
To make it easier to understand I want it to work like this:-

I don't want a 'border' to appear at any point. Does anyone know a small HTML snippet that will make this work???

  • Can an InDesign swf document automatically resize?

    Hello,
Using InDesign CS4, I've created an interactive document and exported into a swf format.
The document size is 1024 x 768 px, but will not resize without cropping parts of the document. This means that the majority of users won't be able to use the document unless they have the same desktop size or larger than 1024 x 768.
I've tried changing the export options in InDesign to get the document to resize, and I've also tried exporting and changing settings in Flash which works but removes all of the interactivity.
From what I've read I don't think it is possible to do this from the Adobe suite.
Does anyone know if there any way this document can be displayed in a browser and automatically resize according to the users desktop resolution? This could be either via some functionality I haven't tried within the Adobe software or by using some software or code to imbed with the document on the webpage.
I can upload the document if needed.
    Thanks for your help.

You can set the embedded swf to scale with the browser window (not fullscreen mode) via the HTML holder generated by ID. Set width and height to "100%" and scale to "showall"
Keep in mind that the browser window could be any size, so text might be be illegible in a small browser window or awkwardly oversized in a large window.

  • PSE how to have photo automatically resize the a 12 X 12 background document

I was told that when you drag a photo onto a 12x12 document it will automatically resize to the 12 x 12. When I do it in PSE the photo is small...and asking me to transform it. Is this different within these two programs or is there a work around in PSE. I had a friend try it in her photoshop program and the image wasn't distorted at all...Didn't appear huge, like if I transform it.

Both are set at 300....it's a very small picture... 4x3 my online friend uses CS5 and said it automatically changed it to the 12x12 blank document when she dragged it on...I did that but it gets very large and blurry...I studied about smart objects and used place to open photo and then tried to resize it....she clipped a mask watercolor underneath to give it emphasis... she then tilted the whole picture.she's out of town for the moment...I was trying to figure out what she did...for the life of me I can't get mine to resize to the 12 x 12....it expands larger than hers when I try.

When an image is added to a document, the incoming image is scaled to the resolution of the target document.  Make sure the resolution is the same for both, or simply use the Move tool on the pasted image to resize it to suit.  The incoming photo is never resized automatically to the target document's dimension.
