Need to restore TM backup to 2nd HD w/o install disks (1 mac)

hi all,
i've run into a quandry. my powermac g5 primary drive (OSX10-5) is throwing i/o errors. i have a recent TM backup, and would like to restore it to my secondary drive (MacOS), and reboot from that drive. then i can work on the primary drive. the panther install on MacOS no longer boots, so i want get 10.5 on that drive.
my dvr-116d cannot read my leopard install disk (nor any other disk). i have a WD mybook -- it's my TM drive. (how about that for irony?) i followed the thread on the WD and DVR mis-interaction, but none of the suggested fixes have worked (no WD plist file to delete, have updated drivers and firmware, rebooted without drive, etc). thus, i can't restart from the leopard install disk. my other systems are all snow leopard, which won't run on the g5, so that rules out the 2nd mac method.
i have made few attempts without success. first, using disk utility (DU), i tried to create an image from the TM OSX10-5 backup. it hung after 30 hours of "creating disk image..." second, i tried using TM restore to different target to put the files on MacOS, and ended up with /Volumes/MacOS/OSX10-5. using DU again, i turned that into a disk image, reformatted MacOS, and restored from that disk image. the result won't boot properly (system tries to booth, then powers off in about 15 seconds). on reflection, the FAQ did say "to restore a data-only volume to an alternate location", so i shouldn't have expected it to work. i'm currently looking into migration assistant...
the primary disk is on borrowed time, so i'd be grateful for any/all ideas/help. (too bad i can't just dd the backup onto a reformatted volume like the old days.)
many thanks,
bert

Another alternative for booting the Leopard install disc would be to "borrow" the DVD drive from one of your newer computers via FireWire Target Disk mode. You would need an appropriate Firewire cable that could connect the two computers.
In this situation you can't set up FireWire Target Disk mode with the Intel as the host computer, but you should still be able to use TDM "the other way", using the computer with the functioning DVD drive as the TDM target and and running the Leopard DVD from the G5 as host. The newer Intel Mac is used only for its DVD drive, and is otherwise totally passive.
To try this, you could do the following:
Shut down the G5. Insert the Leopard DVD into the other computer, and restart the other computer while holding down the T key, booting the other computer into FireWire Target Disk Mode . Connect it to the G5 with the FW cable, and then start the G5 while holding down the Option key. This should boot the G5 into the startup manager, and hopefully you will see the Leopard OS X install DVD as one of the startup choices. Select that, and try to boot from it.

I need to restore my backup but I cant because I have an ecryption password on it that I do not remember setting up and i have tried iPhone Backup Unlocker and also all passwords that I remember. I can not delete the backup like recomended. so what do i do? I have absolutly no reculation of setting up a password for it. please please please HELP!!!

Have you tried your iTunes/Apple ID password. At times, this can be the default used for a backup encryption. Unfortunately, unless you know the password, there is no way to access this information from another source. Without the password, the backup is of no use and cannot be used to restore from.

  • I need to restore the backup but my AppleID and password is not working. The message says "The password you entered to unlock your iPhone was incorrect." I know I am using the right password associated with my Apple ID.

I need to restore the backup to my iphone 3gs but the password associated with my Apple ID. It says the password I entered is not correct. Should i be putting in my Apple ID password or would it be a different password to unlock the backup.

I believe it is asking for the passcode you use for the screen lock on the phone.

  • I need to restore my backup but can't remember my previous password.  What should I do?

    Hello,
I was using a different computer and accidentaly erased all my info on the phone (iphone 4).  I'm trying to restore the backup but it's asking for a code that I had used previously and unfortunately can't remember.  I tried few things that i read online but no luck.  One of them was to extract the backup but the file where i can see the code is in plist and I cant read anything in it.  I did try to convert it but no luck.
Can someone please help me with this?  I could be doing smth wrong but i wouldn't know

    Hey Mon_Cherie,
Thanks for the question. I understand you have some questions pertaining to iTunes encrypted backups. The following article may help to answer these questions:
    iTunes: About iOS backups
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4946
    iTunes and encrypted backups
You can protect your backup with a passcode using the Encrypt Backup option in the Summary pane. Encrypting your backup will back up your Keychain. This way, email account passwords, Wi-Fi passwords, and passwords you enter into websites and some applications will be remembered when you transfer to a new device. Learn how to create and restore from a backup.
When your backup is encrypted, you'll need to enter the password when enabling or disabling encryption or when restoring from this backup.
Warning: Make sure it's a password you will remember or write it down for safekeeping. If you encrypt an iPhone backup in iTunes and forget your password, you can't restore from backup and your data will be unrecoverable.
If you can't remember the password and want to start again, you must perform a full software restore and choose set up as a new device when iTunes prompts you to select the backup from which to restore.

  • New iPod Touch - restore from backup of (2nd gen?) iPod touch

Am buying the new iPod Touch w/additional features - camera, hi-res, quicker processor, etc. - than the (2nd) Gen Touch which I bot June 2009. Run on iMac, all software currently "up-to-date" - want to just transfer over all of my apps, music, data (within iPod apps), MobileMe links, Mail links, etc - from old device to new device. I'd also like to "wipe" the old device in order to give it to someone else without giving them access to my information. Anyone out there give me a "link" to get instructions on this? When I do my own searches in "support manuals" - I get a ton of non-applicable links....

  • Need to restore a backup from iphone 5 to iphone 4, help please!

iPhone 5: iOS7 latest update (I'm fairly certain)
    iPhone 4: 7.03, 13.5 GB capacity, 12.6GB available
    MacBook Pro: OSX 10.8.5
My iPhone 5 was stolen last night. I've been backing it up pretty regularly, but almost exclusively to iCloud (I now realize I should have been backing it up to my computer and iCloud regularly...). I have an old regular iPhone 4, that I downloaded iOS7 to, but I'm having trouble restoring any iPhone 5 backups to my old iPhone. I restored my iPhone 4 to factory settings then downloaded iOS 7 to my iPhone 4 and am given the option to restore the last backup of the iPhone 4 (from MONTHS ago) to this device, but cannot find the option to restore my iPhone 5 backups??? My last backup to my iphone 5 is large (a little over 11.6 GB), but still smaller than my iPhone 4 capacity...
How can I restore my last iPhone5 backup to my iPhone 4? Can I partially restore from iCloud (i've been reading that this would have been easier if I had backed up directly to my macbook)? What programs can I use to do this?
ANY HELP WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED! I don't need everything that was lost on that phone (I had TOO many photos) but certain messaging conversations and notes I definitely need.
Please let me know if you can help but need more info!
    THANKS!

    Sorry for being unclear :S
I erased my iPhone and went through the set up and tried to restore to iCloud but didn't get the option to restore to my iPhone 5 backup (only iPhone 4 backups--I assumed because erasing my phone and going to factory settings meant back to iOS6) so I went through with just factory settings. (I did all of this on my phone, not on my computer/iTunes as my backups are saved onto iCloud) I then signed into my iCloud account on my phone and went to Settings>iCloud>Storage & Backup>Manage Storage then I can see the following
If I click on my iPhone5 (the first one) I see this
I can delete the backup, but how do I restore it to that last backup from yesterday??

  • Need help restoring from backup

My hard drive had a S.M.A.R.T. failure and I needed to back everything up by copying to another drive.
Having replaced the hard drive, I am now trying to restore all my settings.
Can I copy files to the new drive so that I can continue to iSync my SE P910i without having to do a First Sync again?
I have about one month's data on the phone that is not synchronised and therefore not backed up. I am concerned that a First Sync with "Merge data on computer and device" option selected will result in duplicate entries, and I cannot select "Erase data on device then sync" as I would lose this last month's un-synced data.
I have tried copying the P910i.phone from User/Library/Phones, as well as com.apple.isync.plist from User/Library/Preferences but when I launch iSync it recognised the P910i but still thinks that it is going to do a First Sync.
    Thanks in advance!

Look at the options presented here:

  • Need help restoring iTunes Library and iPhoto Library after re-install???

some history, my 5 1/2 year old iMac started as Tiger, upgrade to Leopard and then to Snow Leopard...the latter being done after Snow Leopard came to market. Over a week ago I developed a Disk error that could not be fixed by the repair disk and everything else that Apple could come up with. The iMac at this point was pretty unresponsive. (It had been running great for years) Anyhow the decision was made to do a complete restore. Time Machine had made a backup just the previous day or two earlier plus I have close to 2 years of other SL backups. So per Apple, we did a full install of Leopard followed by a upgrade to Snow Leopard, followed by installing all the updates. We then reinstalled iWorks (with iTunes and iPhoto) and installed those updates as well. So now I had an empty itunes and iPhoto.....Now it gets confing for me! It was late at night and the Apple folks were shutting down. They simply said, Go to your last Time Machine back up date and hit restore and you will be all set. Well...what ever it restored, I can't find my music or photos. I called the next night, again it was late and we only had a short time but this person had me do a system Migration...to restore everything back to the way it was before......So now I have 100 gigs of everything I recognize from my applications to all the stuff in my User file and it would appear everthing else. The problem is....I can't find my old iPhoto library or my itunes library anywhere and I am scared to death that I have lost them despite all my Time Machine Back-ups. Worried and concerned!!! Bill

If you need to, you should be able to selective restore things from later backups, via the "Star Wars" display. See #15 in [Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions|http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/FAQ.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum)., if you're not sure how to do that.
I am going to watch like a hawk and if it does occur then I know I probably have some HD issues.
Good plan. You might want to run this: [Intel-based Macs: Using Apple Hardware Test|http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1509]. Run the Extended tests.
I also think I may do something like a Carbonite back-up in addition to my external HD.
That will be excruciatingly slow. See #27 in the FAQ for some other suggestions.

  • Can I restore TM backup of Snow Leopard running on Ext disk to new HDD

My internal HDD will be replaced due to failure. Whilst have a TM backup prior to the failure, I have installed a temporary Snow Leopard system on my External drive which also has TM backups. As this is the latest updated system can I use the TM backup of my external drive to restore the system to the new HDD?
I have looked at the detailed TM 'tips' and FAQs but have to confess I am confused as to th right answer.

You could do that, but it may be better to install a fresh OS on the new drive and then use Migration Assistant to restore your data.
