Need to understand implications of standby database in deployment

Is anyone aware of a document or best practice related to agents, standby/failover hosts and standby (DataGuard) target databases?
Links, Metalink note numbers, and recommendations for alternate resources appreciated.
Thanks in advance

• Need Help Understanding GoldenGate DR (Standby) Switchover/Fail-over with DBFS and Fuser

Hi, Gurus. We are about to embark on GoldenGate DR failover / switchover configuration and testing using DBFS and Fuser. The details are described in Doc ID 1436913.1 and 1322547.1.
I know the basics of GoldenGate and Oracle DataGuard. But DBFS and Fuser are new concepts to me. I need some help.
1) Is GoldenGate installed in a DBFS partition on the primary? SO, DBFS has to be configured before it is installed?
2) Are these GoldenGate files and directories (ggsci, /dirdat, /dirrpt, etc) visible from UNIX level? Will I be able to navigate in the GG mount or is it a closed file system like ASM?
3) DBFS has to be a part of database. So, what happens if primary database crashes and cannot be mounted? My guess DBFS will not start because the database is down. Or does it run outside of database?
4) Does DBFS store just links to large files in the Oracle database, but the actual GoldenGate binaries files still reside on OS level? Ot they are INSIDE of the database - both GG binaries and trails?
5) How does GoldenGate replicates itself to standby? Because it is a part of database and primary archivelogs and redo logs send the changes to the standby? Or it ONLY runs until switchover/failover on the primary, but afterward it is simply unmounted from primary and mounted to standby by the oracle OS user and the scripts? Or is there a datapump and extract that send trails to standby and after the failure those trails are simply being used?
I guess that is my main question. Why do we bother with DBFS at all? We can simply add a standby extract/datapump to the primary. It will send trails to the standby, that will have only manager running. The manager will accept the trails, periodically deleting all older than lets say one week. At the time of failover/switchover we simply use the same queries as in the docs above to find out if standby became the new primary (the failover had occured). If it did, we can use the same script to get SCN from which this new incarnation started , use a shell script to use an obey file to add the replicat starting from that sequence and voila! Why do we need to bother with fuser and cumbersome DBFS at all? Please let me know what I am missing. If there are alternative to this DBFS DR GoldenGate switchover I would like to use which ever one is the simplest. Thanks.

Looking at the information provided by you. You have created a flashback restore point and then activated your standby database. As you have flashback restore you can flashback your current primary database(old standby) to standby mode but all your changes made on your database will be lost. And you have not done a switchover. you have activated your standby.

• Need query to find out standby database sync information

Hi All,
Please provide me query which give me information about how many standby database configured .I need to generate report hourly sync information of database in our project. I have more than 120 production db and some db having more than one standby database.some of then at local satndby (some of database (prod) in datacenter and some of database in DR datacenter)
Does it it possible to configure in 12c oem?.If it is possible guide me.How can I create report for all databases sync status within one report?

• Manual Standby Database

Hi,
I have ORACLE 10.2.0.3.0 64 bit SE1 running on a RHEL4 server. I have a backup server on which I need to create a manual standby database for a (poor man's) high availability environment. We have explored RAC, Dataguard etc and given them up for cost considerations. We understand the potential of up to 15 minutes data loss. I know the general steps necessary to set up the manual standby server. For example, I know I need a cold (or hot) backup of the primary to reset my standby database. Then I need to create the standby control file. I need to write deamon processes to ship the archive logs to the standby server and apply those logs to the database. I am new to ORACLE and would appreciate some specific advice.
(1) Should I use DBCA to create the database on the standby server first? My impression is that using DBCA will set up the enterprise manager, isqlplus and the relevevant entries in oratab etc on the standby server. If I simply install ORACLE 10g on the standby and copy the backup files from the primary server, I will not have access to the database tools that come with ORACLE 10g.
(2) Can someone please share the scripts you may have written? or point me to some skeleton scripts?
(3) What are the failure points for manual standby databases? What do I need to pro-actively monitor? For example, if the logs are not being applied properly to the standby database for a prolonged period, I would like to know about it.
(4) What are the procedures for recovering from a failed master database?
(5) Where can I learn more about the subject? I will need specific commands to setup the standby. Are these procedures documented somewhere?
Thanks!
- Rajesh

Try this one Manual Standby Database under Oracle Standard Edition
Or search the subject on google, many results.
No, you will not create "standby" using DBCA, you need to use primary's backup to restore on standby server and constantly recover.

• Can i convert logical standby database to physical standby database

Dear All,
Can i convert a logical standby database to physical standby database?
If yes, what are the steps to follow?
Thanks
Mahipal

I never needed or tested something like this, but below maybe usefull -
Transient Logical Standby
Users can convert a physical standby to a transient logical standby database to effect a rolling database upgrade, and then revert the standby to its original state as a physical standby database once the upgrade is complete - using the KEEP IDENTITY clause. This benefits physical standby users who wish to execute a rolling database upgrade without investing in redundant storage otherwise needed to create a logical standby database.
http://www.oracle.com/technology/deploy/availability/htdocs/DataGuardOverview.html
But opposite is documented - http://download-west.oracle.com/docs/cd/B19306_01/server.102/b14239/create_ls.htm#BEIGJCAC

• How to sync the standby database with the primary?

Hi..We have dataguard setup for our production databases(10.2.0.3).
I need one clarification regarding the standby database sync with primary.We identified one of our databases is not in sync with the primary and for longtime the archives are not getting applied at the secondary.
We decided to take the incremental (from SCN)backup from primary and use that at the standby to resolve the gap as described in the book "Oracle dataguard concepts and administration".
But, before doing that,we observed couple of structural changes were not applied at the standby(ex:some tablespaces were not created in secondary where as they were there in primary).
How to apply these changes at the secondary as the standby is in mount state.(Can I open this database and create those tablespaces ?? or do you suggest any other way.
Thanks for your reply.

This points to a setup problem. Something missing, a parameter set wrong etc.
While your question is asking something different - How to correct, I would consider how to prevent. Unless you have a gap or logs not applied you have a deeper issue.
If you have a gap or logs not applied then correct it and check to see if the missing object are present.
The key parameters for Oracle 10 are :
FAL_SERVER=STANDBY
FAL_CLIENT=PRIMARY
STANDBY_FILE_MANAGEMENT=AUTO
DB_FILE_NAME_CONVERT='STANDBY','PRIMARY'
LOG_FILE_NAME_CONVERT='STANDBY','PRIMARY'
log_archive_dest_1='LOCATION=/u01/app/oracle/oradata/PRIMARY/archive VALID_FOR=(ALL_LOGFILES,ALL_ROLES) DB_UNIQUE_NAME=PRIMARY'
log_archive_dest_2='SERVICE=STANDBY LGWR ASYNC VALID_FOR=(ONLINE_LOGFILES,PRIMARY_ROLE) DB_UNIQUE_NAME=STANDBY'
LOG_ARCHIVE_DEST_STATE_1=ENABLE
LOG_ARCHIVE_DEST_STATE_2=ENABLE
LOG_ARCHIVE_MAX_PROCESSES=30
Check them on both sides for issues.
If your standby is really trashed consider using RMAN to duplicate it. You might end up saving time. I have Oracle 11 short notes on this but it will work on Oracle 10 too.
http://www.visi.com/~mseberg/duprman.html
Otherwise use statements like this to resolve you gap.
ALTER DATABASE REGISTER LOGFILE '/u01/app/oracle/oradata/STANDBY/archive/PRIMARY_1_20_716110538.arc';
ALTER DATABASE REGISTER LOGFILE '/u01/app/oracle/oradata/STANDBY/archive/PRIMARY_1_21_716110538.arc';See Section 5.8 Managing Archive Gaps of oracle document B14239-05

• Standby database open to test

Hi.
I's needed to activate some physical standby databases in the DR site to test if the applications are working correctly. Everthing ran correctly, only I have an one problem:
When the DataGuard was synchronized, this does correctly:
Ex.
Prod database
select max(sequence#) from v$log_history; Max sequence: 115
Standby database
select max(sequence#) from v$log_history; Max sequence: 114
But in OEM - DataGuard monitoring page indicate me the sequence that the database advanced during the tests and not the sequence in wich really the standby database goes.
How can I solve this issue?
Thanks

Hi Hemant.
I's followed the steps of "12.6 Using a Physical Database for Read/Write testing and reporting (Oracle Data Guard concepts and Administration guide)" and in this guide have a note for first make a guaranteed restore point, then activate the standby db and after the test restore to this point.
All the steps is running correctly but when I check in the Data guard status pages on the OEM, the *'Last received log'* column have the last sequences generated during the test and in the *'Last applied log'* column have a zero, but if I check with the next sql query in the standby database:
sql> select max(sequence#) from v$log_history;
have the sequence correctly; before I was do the steps to synchronize with the primary database.
I's make a clean of the agents on both servers, the same data.
After the some day, the databases are synchronize.

• MANAGING A STANDBY DATABASE-CRITICAL

Hi All,
I had a primary database version 10.2.0.3 which i upgraded to 10.2.0.4. While upgrading the database
i turned off archiving.
After i upgraded the database and brought it up and the listener i started getting errors of
missing archive logs at the standby site.
My standby database is 10.2.0.3.
My question is
1) As i had turned archiving off at the primary site there is a gap in the archive numbers at the primary itself.

How should i resolve this gap.
Also is it a good idea to upgrade the oracle home on my standbysite to 10.2.0.4 as i have upgraded
my primary

Hello,
Like I said no easy way out of this situation. First option sync both usign RMAN and section option setup from the scratch (that's might not be possbile).
You can also find similar steps under oracle documentation serach for resolving gaps manually/
Here are the steps for first option, study it and make changes to according to your needs
1. On the standby database, stop the managed recovery process
SQL> ALTER DATABASE RECOVER MANAGED STANDBY DATABASE CANCEL;
2. On the standby database, find the SCN which will be used for the incremental backup at the primary database:
SQL> SELECT CURRENT_SCN FROM V$DATABASE;
This will used in the rman backup command at step 2.
3. In RMAN, connect to the primary database and create an incremental backup from the
SCN derived in the previous step:
RMAN> BACKUP INCREMENTAL FROM SCN <SCN from previous step>
DATABASE FORMAT '/tmp/ForStandby_%U' tag 'FORSTANDBY';
You must create this incremental backup on disk for it to be useful. When you move
the incremental backup to the standby database, you must catalog it at the
standby as described in Oracle Database Backup and Recovery Advanced User's
Guide. Backups on tape cannot be cataloged.
4. Transfer all backup sets created on the primary system to the standby system (note that there may be
more than one backup file created). For example:
SCP /tmp/ForStandby_* standby:/tmp
5. Connect to the standby database as the RMAN target, and catalog all incremental backup pieces:
RMAN> CATALOG START WITH '/tmp/ForStandby';
6. Recover the standby database with the cataloged incremental backup:
RMAN> RECOVER DATABASE NOREDO;
7. In RMAN, connect to the primary database and create a standby control file backup:
RMAN> BACKUP CURRENT CONTROLFILE FOR STANDBY FORMAT '/tmp/ForStandbyCTRL.bck';
8. Copy the standby control file backup to the standby system. For example:
SCP /tmp/ForStandbyCTRL.bck standby:/tmp
9. Shut down the standby database and startup nomount:
RMAN> SHUTDOWN;
RMAN> STARTUP NOMOUNT;
10. In RMAN, connect to standby database and restore the standby control file:
RMAN> RESTORE STANDBY CONTROLFILE FROM '/tmp/ForStandbyCTRL.bck';
11. Shut down the standby database and startup mount:
RMAN> SHUTDOWN;
RMAN> STARTUP MOUNT;
12. If the primary and standby database data file directories are identical, skip to step
13. If the primary and standby database data file directories are different,
then in RMAN, connect to the standby database, catalog the standby data files,
and switch the standby database to use the just-cataloged data files. For
example:
RMAN> CATALOG START WITH '+DATA_1/CHICAGO/DATAFILE/';
RMAN> SWITCH DATABASE TO COPY;
13. If the primary and standby database redo log directories are identical, skip to step 14. Otherwise, on the standby database, use an OS
utility or the asmcmd utility (if it is an ASM-managed database) to remove all
online and standby redo logs from the standby directories and ensure that the
LOG_FILE_NAME_CONVERT parameter is properly defined to translate log directory
paths. For example, LOG_FILE_NAME_CONVERT='/BOSTON/','/CHICAGO/'.
14. On the standby database, clear all standby redo log groups (there may be more than
3):
SQL> ALTER DATABASE CLEAR LOGFILE GROUP 1;
SQL> ALTER DATABASE CLEAR LOGFILE GROUP 2;
SQL> ALTER DATABASE CLEAR LOGFILE GROUP 3;
15. If you have flashback enabled:
On the standby database, restart Flashback Database:
SQL> ALTER DATABASE FLASHBACK OFF;
SQL> ALTER DATABASE FLASHBACK ON;
16. If required restart managed recovery in the standby:
On the standby database, restart recovery:
SQL> ALTER DATABASE RECOVER MANAGED STANDBY DATABASE DISCONNECT;Regards

• Do I need to use standby database in begin backup mode to take the backup?

Hi All,
I have a 10g(10.2.0.4) primary database with standby on a solaris platform. I need to create another standby database for the same primary.
I have stopped the recovery on existing standby database and started copying(os copy) the files from existing standby to 2nd standby server. However I haven't kept the existing standby database(mounted) in begin backup mode. Is it okay?
Thanks,

• Need help on Standby database v8.1.7 on Windows

Hello All,
Our current setup to create a standby database consists of a bunch of scripts. I'm trying to convert this such that we can use OEM 9.2 and have jobs to do the backup and be able to create the standby database using point and click. Does anyone have this setup?
This is where I am....I've created the primary database and the standby database. They both work well and next i try to do a failover. The failover works and my new primary database is now active. I want to recreate the standby database now (old primary).
I do a backup of the new primary database do say D:\backup\. I go on the standby and I restore the controlfile. Next when I attempt to do the restore, I get the following error: RMAN-03002: failure during compilation of command
RMAN-03013: command type: IRESTORE
RMAN-06026: some targets not found - aborting restore
RMAN-06023: no backup or copy of datafile 1 found to restore.
How can i fix this? Is there a way to tell RMAN that the backup is under D:\Backup\? How do I catalog the files? I remember on 10g you could do this..but that's if you use a recovery catalog. In this case, i'm using the controlfile to do the restore...not using Recovery Catalog.
Any assistance is appreciated.
Thanks!

Upon reading the document i am not clear on upgrade path like do i need to upgrade clusterware as well or not?You need to upgrade the clusterware before RDBMS....therefore it is not optional. You first need to upgrade the clusterware and then the RDBMS.
The steps listed by you seems to be in order (from a high-level).

• Need temp tables in Standby Database

I have created a standby database that is going to be used for reporting as well. I was told that no temp tables can be created for reporting. I have created a temp tablespace on my primary and a tempfile on my standby and I'm able to put it into read-only mode and run queries. But the developers need the ability to create temp tables for certain reports to run. How can I get around this with my standby database? Is there any way to use temp tables from the primary when running these reports on the standby?
Any suggestions would be greatly appreicated!
Thanks,
Bea Cary
DBA

I need couple of temp tables when my process starts, load the data into them, do all calculationsSQL Server has Temp Table because it does not have the flexibility for SQL as Oracle Does. I bet you can achieve what every you are trying to do in SQL Server by storing in a temp table by just single SELECT statement in oracle.
With the latest introduction of MODEL clause we can really do magic in SQL. Even then if you want to store your data you can go for Collection Types in PL/SQL.
Thanks,
Karthick.

• Implementing Oracle StandBy Database - Suggestion & Tips needed Pls.

Dear Sir,
With rerefence to high availability of our database, we would like to implement a standby database. Regarding this, i have few doubts and request all you expert to pls. help me out. This goes like this:
1. What is DataGuard.? Is it Separate product in Oracle or Part of Oracle Database Server - Enterprise Edition.?
2. Is standby database implemented / created ONLY using DataGaurd?
3. Do we need to buy another license for Oracle Database when i go for implementing StandBy Database.?
Basically we want if my main production server is down, it should automatically go to my StandBy database and does not stop my application. This is possible i feel by implementing Standby database. And we are thingking to do it. In that respect, we have above query.
I would request if somebody could be guide us and help.

Currently our physical standby database is running in manual mode and logs are applied by me manually delay of 2 days.
And also when I add a data file in the primary database ,I've to manually add the file again on the standby .
This process is becoming too laborious, now I want to automate this process,
Now my question is
For automating this process ,do I need to bounce the database ?
I want to have 2 days gap for archive log apply process? How should I do that.
And what all parameters I need to change.

For 11g no ([http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B28359_01/server.111/b28294/standby.htm#i72053]) for other versions basically yes, though you will likely get away with small point differences in os version). I'd argue that for best practice for physical standby the answer is yes, not least since you'll likely want to do role switchover as part of your operational requirements - changing OS at the same time as Role switchover just adds unnecessary complexity.
2.- Do I need a license for a standby db?
Yes. See the OLSA at [http://oraclestore.oracle.com/OA_HTML/ibeCCtpSctDspRte.jsp?section=11365&media=os_local_license_agreement] especially

Failover: Subject to the conditions that follow below, your license for the following programs, Oracle Database (Enterprise Edition, Standard Edition or Standard Edition One), Oracle Database Enterprise Edition Options, Oracle Internet Application Server (Enterprise Edition, Standard Edition, Standard Edition One or Java Edition), Oracle Internet Application Server Options, Business Intelligence Suite Enterprise Edition Plus, Business Intelligence Server Enterprise Edition, Business Intelligence (Standard Edition or Standard Edition One), WebLogic (Server Standard Edition, Server Enterprise Edition, Suite, Suite Options or Application Grid), Tuxedo and Adapters, Oracle Enterprise Repository, Entitlements Server, Entitlements Server Security Module, Directory Services, Identity Federation and those programs with “BEA” in the program name includes the right to run the licensed program(s) on an unlicensed spare computer in a failover environment for up to a total of ten separate days in any given calendar year (for example, if a failover node is down for two hours on Tuesday and three hours on Friday, it counts as two days). The above right only applies when a number of machines are arranged in a cluster and share one disk array. When the primary node fails, the failover node acts as the primary node. Once the primary node is repaired, you must switch back to the primary node. Once the failover period has exceeded ten days, the failover node must be licensed. In addition, only one failover node per clustered environment is at no charge for up to ten separate days even if multiple nodes are configured as failover. Downtime for maintenance purposes counts towards the ten separate days limitation. When licensing options on a failover environment, the options must match the number of licenses of the associated database. Additionally, when licensing by Named User Plus, the user minimums are waived on one failover node only. Any use beyond the right granted in this section must be licensed separately. In a failover environment, the same license metric must be used for the production and failover nodes when licensing a given clustered configuration.

• NEED TO MAKE STANDBY DATABASE

Hello Experts, We are making an standby database. Our version of oracle : ORACLE 10 G 10.2
OS : WINDOWS 2003 SERVER. We are making export weekly 3 times from the production database. To ensure the avilabiliy , We are making a standy by database
with same OS and Oracle too. Kindly some one tell me the correct way to import the data base to the standby database.. We need the exact copy of the production database on the standby server. (like image). I need the exact IMPORT tool syntax. KINDLY HELP ME.

How do you move data from one database to another?
several methods, one in particular stands out: transportable tablespaces.
In this approach, you take a set of self-contained, read-only tablespaces, export only the metadata, copy the datafiles of those tablespaces at the OS level to the target platform, and import the metadata into the data dictionary—a process known as plugging.
OS file copy is generally much faster than other traditional means of data movement such as export/import.
