.NEF Raw Files to .XMP Files.

My RAW files have been changed from .NEF files to .XMP Files. How can I change the files back to RAW files?
I am using CS4 PhotoShop and Bridge.

So you have not opened any of the files in Camera RAW, so there’s no reason to have created an XMP file, yet?
Are your XMP files are 10MB+ in size?  If so, it is possible that you’ve somehow renamed your raw files from an extension of NEF to an extension of XMP.
The easiest way I know of to rename a bunch of files is with a DOS Command prompt.  My memory of what the menus in Windows 2000 are like is a little fuzzy, but here’s what I’d do, to rename XMP files to NEF files a folder at a time.
Open a command prompt by going to Start / All Programs / Accessories / Command Prompt.
Use the DOS CD command to find the folder the file are in.
Do a DIR to see that you are the right place and that there are no NEF files in the folder (DIR *.NEF) but that there are XMP files in the folder (DIR *.XMP).
Use the DOS rename command to change the extensions:
REN *.NEF *.XMP
Do a DIR to see that you now have NEF files (DIR .)
If the XMP files were really XMP-sidecar files with settings in them, then renaming then to NEF files will not make them open and you’ll probably get an error, but if they were really NEF files that you’d accidentally renamed to XMP files, then the above process should work.

  • Importing geotagged jpeg and raw photos with xmp files issue

I had a folder of photos (all unique, no dupes) from two different cameras. Some were .jpg and some .cr2 (raw). I used an external app on my Mac 10.6.x called PhotoLinker to geotag the photos based on gpx track files. I wrote the metadata out to .xmp files, done by that app. So then I had a folder with .jpg, .cr2 and .xmp files I then moved them to another volume and did an Import Move operation in LR3.  For the raw images, all went fine.  The images were pulled into LR and they each had the geotagged data for location. But for the jpeg images they were imported into the catalog in LR but none of them had any geotagged data for the location.
Can someone let me know if they have encountered this problem and what they did about it?  Is this a bug?
I even selected one of the JPG files in LR grid view, then did a read of the metadata from a file. The upper left corner displayed that the metadata file was being loaded from XMP.  But again, no geotagged information. If I load that same .xmp file back into PhotoLinker it shows the geotagged data still there.
What gives?  Why is this happening?
    What I am using...
    Mac OS 10.6.8
    PhotoLinker 2.2.9
    Lightroom 3.4.1

Thanks for the response and answer, Ian.
That strikes me as really odd. I realize that jpgs can have metadata within the image file and maybe the issue for LR is which does it consider to have priority. However, if so, why not present a dialog asking the user?
I would suggest Adobe plan on filling the gapping hole LR has when it comes to geotagging support. It currently provides very minimal support.

  • How to import CR2 files with XMP files?

I'm using LR 1.4.1 on a Vista platform (with service pack 1). Last week my OS got corrupted and I had to reinstall everything.
So I'm trying to get my catalog back into LR but am having a lot of trouble. When I try to open LR using the latest backup of the catalog, it only opens certain files. All others show up as a grey preview.
Frustrated at this not working, I decided to just import the CR2 files from my external HD. Problem with this is that it's not bringing in ANY of the develop settings. So all of my edits are gone. This is going to cost me hours and hours and days of time to redo.
I have several clients waiting on orders, galleries, etc and I'm at my wit's end on how to fix all this! Can anyone help me?
    Thanks,
    Annie

    > All others show up as a grey preview
Do you mean grey boxes as thumbnails or are images grey in loupe or develop module? If it's grey thumbnails, then it's because there are no preview files generated. Generating standard previews (or 1:1 previes) should fix it. If Develop module shows images as grey then I have no idea.

  • Importing older Camera Raw-adjusted RAW files with XMP sidecars

When I import CR2 files (Canon RAW) that have XMP files alongside them into my Lightroom 4 catalog, Lightroom correctly reads image adjustments from XMP files and assigns them as Develop settings for the newly imported photos. This is how I expected it to be. Lightroom assigns older process version to these files, as it should be.
One quick question I have though: once I imported all these CR2 files into my collection, is it safe to delete all those XMP sidecar files immediately? I assume that Lightroom stores all Develop settings in the catalog file at the moment of the import and that XMP sidecars are no longer necessary. Is that correct? Or do I have to enter the Develop mode with each imported file first, before deleting the XMP in order to make old settings to "stick"?

So, that's what I did. I successfully imported my pictures into my catalog and then deleted all XMP files (or, more precisely, backed them up in a different location).
However, Lightroom still remembers that my pictures used to have sidecar XMP files. The Metadata window still says "Sidecar file: xmp". And, more importantly, absence of XMP files triggers errors when I attempt to move imported pictures from one folder to another inside Lightroom. Lightroom report errors for each file that used to have a sidecar, listing all missing XMP files in the error window. The move operation completes successfully though, but Lightroom still refuses to forget about the XMP sidecar even after the file is moved. Next time I attempt to move the same picture, the same error window pops up again.
How do I force Lightroom to forget about XMP files for pictures that were originally imported with XMP sidecars?

  • Batch RAW conversion: no sidecar XMP files

When I open and save a RAW file as a JPEG by hand, I always get a XMP file that tells me the RAW settings. Actually the XMP is generated as soon as I "open" the RAW file in PS. When I do the exact same steps in a batched action, no XMP files result. I just painfully batch converted 4000 RAW files, no XMP files showed up. Ran some test cases, manually doing the steps result in a XMP file, batching them doesn't. Why doesn't PS generate the XMP files?
One thing I worry about is what RAW settings were applied to my files. Without the XMP files it's very hard to check. Some settings, like noise reduction and saturation, are pretty subtle and hard to determine w/o a "with" and "without" comparision. In theory the XMP files would let me detemine exactly what settings were applied.
This is for Windows XP, CS3, latest RAW update downloaded a few days ago.

For the case of DNG files with both internal XMP and a sidecar file, Camera Raw picks the file with the newer OS modification date/time.
Adobe does not support sidecar XMP files for JPEG or TIFF files.
It is fairly trivial to write computer programs to exact XMP from files, so yes, it is "possible". You can save the XMP out of any opened file in Photoshop CS3's get info dialog in advanced mode (see the save button at the bottom).

  • Bridge doesn't recognize its own .xmp files

Using Bridge CS3 on Mac OS 10.5.8. I edit RAW (.nef) files in ACR. When I click done, save, or open image, an .xmp sidecar file is generated and saved in the same folder as the .nef. However, changes made in ACR do not show in the preview thumbnail in Bridge, and when I re-open the file in ACR, my changes are lost. The .xmp file is still there, it's just not applied. It's like Bridge doesn't know the .xmp file is there. The icons in Bridge indicating altered develop settings or crops do not appear after adjudstments are made. Star ratings made in Bridge remain. When this issue began, it would ignore sidecar files for some images, but not others. It is increasing in frequency, or may now be consistent. (If I open the file into Photoshop or save an image file out of ACR, the changes are applied to the developed image file, they are simply ignored by Bridge in regards to the Raw file.)
Files that were adjusted before the problem began still synchronize with their sidecar files. Looking at the sidecar files in a text editor shows that they contain the adjustments made.
There were no changes in any installations/updates to software or OS at the time of the problem's onset.
I've tried using a Camera Raw database instead of sidecar files, and the changes are still lost. I've tried purging caches for Bridge and for ACR. I've tried resetting and dumping preference (.plist) files.
Anyone have ideas on what I can do to salvage this program as my RAW library manager?

    Matthew,
Same problem here. But I'm using CS5 in Win7.
Bridge cannot find its XMP files. Bridge does not see its XMP files. XMP files do not work. Camera Raw settings do not show in thumbnails. ACR settings lost.
I just now figured out the problem/solution.
In my case, the association between CR2 files and Bridge was usurped by Canon DPP (the Canon raw converter) which I just installed this afternoon. When I installed it, there was no immediate problem. But when I started a new work session tonight, Bridge acted as if the XMP files weren't even there.
Solution: In Windows, to set a file association, you just right-click on a file (in this case the CR2 file) and select "Open With", and then navigate to Bridge (in my case Bridge CS5). That re-establishes the link between Bridge and its own XMP files. Then simply purge your cache and let Bridge rebuild it using its XMPs (which it can now find again) to rebuild the cache with the adjustments that are stored in the XMPs.
I don't know how to do this on a Mac, but the principle is the same.
I hope this solves your problem.

  • Bridge CS5 not recognizing xmp files created on CS6?

An employee of mine edited several shoots, using her own computer.  She has CC and used Camera RAW.  I still use CS5 and am trying to process the files she edited (I have the RAW and the xmp files).  Typically, I process these through Bridge.  However, Bridge doesn't seem to recognize her xmp files.  Any ideas on 1. why this is happening, and 2. how I can apply her xmp files when converting the RAW to jpeg?  We are talking about 1500 images.  Thanks!

What camera model is she using?  What camera raw version are you using on your CS5?  Is her camera model supported by your cs5 acr?
Perhaps she could process her raw files+xmp into dng files to pass on to you.

  • Physcially export XMP files

    Hello,
I have lightroom 5 on windows 7. My boss and I couldn't get smart previews to work a few days ago so he sent me his NEF files with XMP files. I imported them, made my edits, and sent the XMP back to him again. I have the option "automatically write changes into XMP" checked and I have done "cntrl -s" several times to force Lightroom to write the changes. However, when my boss syncs the XMP there are no edits that I have made. Can I physially make Lightroom generate new XMP with my changes?

Ideas of what might be wrong:
You’re doing Save Metadata to File (singular) rather than Save Metadata to Files (plural).  Right-clicking on one of the selected thumbnails in the thumbnail bar or library grid is enough to do all Files, not just the image right-clicked on.
The permissions of the files are not read/write for your user, due to how the copy was done, so the XMP files cannot be updated.  I would expect an error message in this situation but I’m not sure if LR does or not.
My #1 guess would be that the type of import you did was not an Add, which it should have been, but a Copy, and as such the images and XMPs you’re looking at are still his original files rather than your copy of them that got moved to another location.  You can right-click on one of your images and do Show in Explorer and see where yours are.
Do an Export with Original as the filetype with your copy of his images selected to some other folder in and see if you get better XMPs this time.

  • Resucing 2 photoshoots by replacing xmp files? (Dying computer)

My current computer is dying.  It works mostly but I can't open LR (v3).  My photos and the xmp files are on an external hard drive.
Thankfully, I have my data backed up (photos, xmp and catalogue files) apart from these 2 photoshoots (just photos and xmp).  My new computer is arriving Wednesday and I'll just (hopefully) import most of the photos/database into the new computer.
Here's my question.  I have 2 photoshoots with no catalogue backup but they exist on my external hard drive as .RAW files and .xmp files.  Should I import them a 'new' RAW files, delete the new .xmp files and replace the deleted .xmp files with the 'old' .xmp files?   Will LR be fooled by this approach?  Or do I just tell LR to rescan the external hard drive and it'll find the 2 photoshoots+xmp files?  Or is there a better way?
    Thanks in advance.

If I understand you correctly, the two photo shoots (with no catalog backup) have been imported in Lr on your old computer and are therefore in the catalog on your old computer but you cannot access it any more. Therefore you are thinking of loading your latest catalog backup  onto the new computer - but this catalog backup does not contain the two shoots.
If my assumption is correct you should - after installing Lr on the new machine and loading the latest catalog backup - import the photos from the two shoots. Since they are not in the loaded (backup) catalog, Lr will treat them as new images. Lr will read the xmp-file on import and display your images accordingly. But you won't see your previous editing steps in the History panel.
Make sure that in the Import Dialog on the right side under <Apply During Import> you select <None> for <Develop Settings> and for <Metadata>.
Naturally it would be better to transfer your working catalog from the old computer to an external hard drive and from there to your new computer. You won't need Lr for that. Just copy or move  the file with the ending <  .lrcat> to the external drive via Mac Finder / Win Explorer. Do a search for files ending with < .lrcat> and - if you find several - transfer them all. You can sort out later which ones you won't need anymore.
If you manage to salvage the catalog from the old computer open Lr with this catalog by double-clicking it. You only will have to do the re-linking of your folders in case they are on drives with different drive letters. It will make it easier if you can give your drives (including the external ones) the same drive letters they had with the old computer. The catalog contains also your history, so you would see the history steps for the photos of the two shoots.

  • XMP files appear as applescripts (icons)

    Hi there
I am retouching some files for someone.
We both have CR 7.4, and CS6. The files are D800 images.
When I open the file, the image looks totally flat, but all the levels (numbers for blacks, whites, contrast etc) all show the same as my client's computer.
Also, before I touch the file the XMP files appear correct. Adobe seems to reognize them, and they have correct icon. However if I save a change to XMP, the file appears as an applescript file.
I tried the adobe clean up app, re-installed PS, am running the newest CR7.4
Is there something I'm missing? My OS is 10.6.8 Snow Leopard. My client is on 10.8 I beleive.
    Any help would be great!

You should not have to touch the XMP file.  This is just the file that holds the raw image edit material.  It normally is a hidden.

  • Xmp files - are they safe to delete

after I open a RAW file there is always a xmp file saved.  If I made changes to the RAW file, will there be any effects on my photos if I delete all of the xmp files.  I know that they are there to show the file information, but I just want to make sure that nothing will go wrong with my edited photos if I delete the xmp files.

The XMP files contain information about the last conversion you did on a particular raw file.  If you delete it your conversion parameters will revert to defaults next time you open the raw file, instead of Camera Raw using the last conversion parameters.
Go into Edit - Preferences - Camera Raw... and you'll see that you could choose to save the conversion parameters in a central database if you don't like the sidecar XMP files showing up.  If you DO choose the central database, consider upping the max size from the default of 1 GB.

  • *.XMP Files still needed?

As far as I understood it, since the Release-Version, LR writes the XMP Data directly into the Files (annoying enough).
Does this mean, that the *.xmp files could be deleted?

This is only true for *non-RAW* files (DNG, TIFF, JPEG). XMPs are still written for the RAWs.
The xmp files are never required if the images are in your library. However, if you lose your library, the XMP files can be thought of as a backup.
Since the xmp files don't contain all information necessary to rebuild a library, I think backing up the library file is better.

  • XMP files batch reset?

Hi all, a friend of mine is a photojournalist and is having an emergency.  He's telling me that the XMP files for all the RAWs he edited of a particular story have somehow been batch reset, so his edits are gone and he has no idea how this could have happened.  Is there any way this is possible?  Please help!

Did he copy the images from one drive to another? Depending on the preferences set in Camera Raw: to save xm edits in the ACR database or in sidecar files, the chance of loosing edits exist if you have the prefs set to save in the ACR database and then move tose to a new computer.
Ih he had the prefs set to the ACR database, he should be able to open ACR and change the the prefs to save in an external .xmp file. The key will be to select all the images and make some really, really minor change in ACR (like a +1 Hue or Sat adjustment then click done in ACR. That should force the writting of all the settings to a new .xmp file. He could even go back and change the setting back and re-click done to undo the temp change.
After that, as long as the raw files and .xmp files are both copied to a new drive/computer then he settings should be retained.

  • Possible to export XMP files only?

I want to be able to export the metadata (captions, keywords and ratings) as XMP sidecars alongside my referenced RAW files.
Currently the only way I can see to do this is to export the RAWs with an XMP file - i.e. I have to duplicate all my RAW files! Is there a way to get Aperture simply to generate the XMP files, without creating a new RAW?
    Julian

I've not tried this - because I've no need for XMP data at the moment - but I just came across this tool "Lightbox XMP" today: http://www.lightboxsoftware.com/aperture/index.html (the name of the author of Lightbox seemed familiar, so I followed a link from elsewhere...)
I think it might be the sort of thing you're after, and is certainly a neat way to bridge the gap until Apple provide XMP-only export.

  • XMP files remain with NEF files in my folder.  Camera Raw suddenly reset leaving my edits gone.  Will XMP files enable me to resume with those lost edits?

XMP files remain with NEF files in my folder.  Camera Raw suddenly reset leaving my edits gone.  Will XMP files enable me to resume with those lost edits?

I never tried this, but I'm pretty sure that with DNG files, Lightroom will ignore xmp files, even when you instruct Lightroom to "Read Metadata from File". Lightroom expects all the metadata to be in the DNG file, not in the xmp file.
Pick flags, as far as I know, are never written to xmp file; nor are they written to DNG files.
If you're going to make this transfer procedure work, you need to do it by either (a) embedding the metadata in the DNG file and send those back and forth; or (b) use RAW and xmp and then sending the xmp files back and forth (plus I guess you have to transfer the original RAW once to your editor)
