Nest thermostats

Hello.  I'm wondering if anyone has ever had any luck getting Nest thermostats to stay connected on a cisco wireless network.  We are running 5508s (ver
7.2.110.0) and the thermostats are connecting to a 3502.  The WLAN is a locally switched FlexConnect SSID.
According to nest there are two potential issues - NAT timeout and wireless networks that do not play nicely with devices that sleep for long periods of time.  I've configured static NAT translations for the Nests, so that shouldn't be an issue.  Nest says "Nest uses Wi-Fi 'Power Save Mode' to allow it to sleep and charge its  battery while remaining connected to the internet. Not all Wi-Fi  routers support this feature or implement it correctly.  When they don't, Nest will have difficulty sleeping and will restart  in an attempt to reset its network connection. This may happen  repeatedly if your Wi-Fi router is incompatible with the 'Power Save  Mode' feature."  I've tried increasing the DTIM timers to no avail.  Does anyone else have any suggestions?
Thanks,
Matt

I did some more reading and the connection problem has to do with the inactivity timeout on the AP.
The thermostat wants to go to sleep for about 30 minutes at a time to conserve the battery built into it.
My AP was set to disconnect unknown clients after 60 seconds. The thermostat would wake up expecting
to already be associated with the AP and the AP had already disassociated it and the thermostat couldn't
handle that. The solution was increase the unknown client timeout to at least 30 minutes and now the thermostat
is staying connected. I actually set my AP unknown client timeout to 10 hours just to be safe.
So far the thermostat is staying connected. I'll post again after a couple of days to see if the fix is permanent.

  • WRT1900AC - Nest Thermostat disconnects after 30 mins

Just swapped my EA6500 for the new WRT1900AC, and everything is rock solid except for my Nest Thermostat. After about 30 mins the Nest will say that it can't take to the wireless, and if I reselet the SSID again, it will stay connected again for about 30 mins.
I believe this issue has been seen before. Something about routers not supporting low power mode correctly and/or the default for timing about a client is less then 30 mins. The EA6500 never had this issue, but it looks like the WRT1900AC does.
I've even set the 2.4Ghz to WPA2 personal only (as suggested by Nest) and the channel width to 20MHz only, but it's still being disconnected after the Nest enteres low power mode and before it wakes up again 30 minutes later..

When I had the Netgear R7000, my 3M Wifi Thermostat would not connect and hold the link between the router and thermostat. I researched this on the 3M site and it was buried deep in their literature that there unit was having some compatibility problems with certain routers, they didn't name which make or model. According to their article they were soon to release a new FW for the device and an updated app for the iOS. Sure enough, almost 20 days later a new FW and app, and the thermostat was SOLIDLY connected to the R7000 and responding to all commands from the app.
The WRT1900AC connected to ALL of my components right from the get go ..no hiccups. I suspect Nest needs to update their FW and all should be good.

  • My nest thermostats keep losing connectivity

I have 2 Nest Thermostats.  One for the main floor, and a second for the upstairs.  Lately one or both seem to not be reachable via my tablet app.  I have a Airport extreme for my wifi, and it feed into a Juniper gateway/firewall.  I didn't have the problem with the main floor nest, until I installed the 2nd floor nest.  I have assigned both thermostats their own static IPs, and they are Mac filtered in both the wifi router, and the firewall.  Other wifi devicesIn my home network I have approx 30 devices that are internet enabled.  Most are wired via cat6, and the thermostats, apple TV, a tablet and a cell phone are wifi enabled.  SO I don't believe it's due to too much WIFI interference, and Previously I've had many more wifi enabled devices on my network, and when the 1st nest was the only themostat, I had no connection problems.

  • Nest thermostat

When trying to set up my nest thermostat I get a cannot connect error message nest.com/w2. When I go to the nest website and explore this it says something a bout mac address filtering and then refers back to the apple website but without a specific troubleshooting reference. Can you help me troubleshoot this issue?

MAC filtering...or Timed Access, as it is know on Apple routers.....is a tedious process having to do with entry of long identification numbers of each of your wireless devices.
You would have also set up rules for each device regarding the specific times each day that the device would be allowed to connect to your network.
If you had done this, you would already know whether you were using MAC filtering, and how to use it.
Cross that one off the troubleshooting list.

  • How do you add a MAC address to air port so it will recognize a Nest thermostat

How do you add a MAC address to anAir Port

In a v5 utility it looks different to a v6 utility.. and you should not be using MAC restrictions anyway, unless you have time controls. MAC filtering is not adequate security.
There are only two options Timed Access or Radius.. you cannot use Radius without a Radius authentication server.
Clcik the + symbol and add the MAC address.
Make sure the time limits are not restricted if you want permanent access.
BUT this is just the wrong way to do things. Use proper security WPA or WPA2 with a password. not MAC filters which are next to useless.
If you have issues getting your NEST to connect to the Airport, set the wireless name to correct SMB standard. That means short, no spaces and pure alphanumeric. The current name is probably not compliant to SMB network standards hence the NEST cannot connect.

  • Nest thermostat needs to have ports o[pen to connect

I  did have  help, but lost web page. i need to open ports, 80,443, 9443,9543 on a 4200

I had to sign up just to say that Port Forwarding does indeed work. I was having trouble with controlling the Nest from the mobile app and website. Kept getting the "?" after a command was sent, and the Nest wouldn't acknowledge the command until it was manually "woke up" by pressing the unit. It would then perform the command sent from the mobile app, regardless of how long ago it was sent.
Enabled port forwarding to the HTTP, HTTPS and TCP/UDP port after adding the Nest to an address reservation list (so the IP would always remain the same) and it now instantly performs the commands sent from my phone. No more "?" symbol.

  • Is the Time Capsule wi-fi router compatible with the Nest thermostat? I've read where there are issues with the Nest and Airport Extreme (AE)? Is AE used in the Time Capsule?

I've read where there are issues with the Nest and Airport Extreme (AE)? Is AE used in the Time Capsule?
If so, i already have a wi-fi router, so can the Time Capsule simply be used for wireless backup instead of as a router if there is conflict?

A TC is fundamentally a AE with a sata chip included to drive the hard disk. Some slightly different bios to include disk functions, although most of those are also on the AE. So as a router it is 99.999% identical.
And yes, if you have another router you can easily bridge the TC and use wireless for backups and internet connection. Once you no longer route through the TC the issues with most NAT problems including port forwarding should disappear.. mostly this is due to all apple routers using NAT-PMP instead of upnp which is the near universal standard for opening ports.. without upnp apple keep their routers more exclusive.

  • 3rd gen AirPort Express kills Nest battery

I am swapping out our AirPort Extreme for the new 3rd gen Express. I've decided to do this because I don't have a use for disk support on the AirPort, but would like to put a pair of speakers in that spot for AirPlay.
Everything went fine in the switch-over, except that a couple of days later, our Nest thermostat stopped showing up in the Nest remote control ap.
If I query the thermostat, it says that the battery is low.
The thermostat got on perfectly well with the Extreme for almost 9 months. Nothing ele has changed.
I am absolutely positive that both sides will point fingers at the other. I don't expect that there's any way this can be fixed without a firmware update from either one or the other vendor. Until we get one or the other, this post can serve as a warning about potential compatibility issues with the new Express.

I have the same problem when I replaced my old Airport Expess with the new one. I talked to Nest tech supportb& they helped me trouble shoot. They confirmed that the Nest is having trouble with the new firmware on the new Express. They assured me that they are working on the problem. They said they will contact me when it is resolved.

  • Nest Devices

Okay now to my next issue (Sooner or later we will get everything worked out haha)
I have two Nest Thermostats and they are having problems connecting to the wireless network. The error sends me here: http://nest.com/w2 ... It has something to do with MAC Address filtering.
    Any ideas?

Can you specify the problems that you are encountering? Because when I checked the link there are four possible problems. Are your Nest Devices offline, not connected, failed to connect or are not seeing the network? By the way I'm not familiar with these devices. But we might find the answer if we know the specific details.

  • Adding Nest and Belkin WeMo products

Where is the optimal location to install the Airport base station based on the following:\
I have the following sensors i am trying to connect to my WLAN at home:
2- WeMo light switches (1- kitchen and 1- bedroom)
1- WeMo outlet switch (basement office)
2 - Nest Thermostats (2 - zone heating and cooling)
    2 - Nest Smoke/C02 alarms
all running over my Apple Airport base station.  I added an Airport extreme so i could extend the WLAN upstairs in our split level home.  The Nest products are visible most of the time from my iOS 7 phone & Tablet.  Of the 3 WeMo devices only the wall switch shows up, the light switches are "grayed out".  Can't seem to find our why they are dropping off.
Overall the house is a log cabin, upper and lower, with cinder block foundation, and is approx 3,000 sqft. My office is in the basement where the Comcast cable enters the house through a splitter to the TV and to my router.

Optimal.....It is an oversimplification to say that wireless devices need to be as close as possible and have line-of-sight to the wireless access point to which they are connected....but it would be ideal if this were possible.
Otherwise, you must work backwards from the ideal and accept the fact that everything will be a compromise of sorts.
You will have a significantly higher quality signal if you can connect the AirPorts together using a wired Ethernet connection, since you lose at least half of the bandwidth on the network when you try to extend wirelessly.
Add in the fact that the ceiling is probably absorbing another 20-25% of the signal and you can see why there won't be much of it left for the extender to extend.
The extender does not "boost" the signal speed, it simply takes what it receives and makes it go further.
To give you a rough idea, my house is not as large as yours....about 2400-2500 square feet all on one basic level, and I use four AirPorts all wired together to provide the wireless network, which delivers a strong, fast wireless signal to any point in the home and out on the patio as well.

  • HP 6520 wifi won't connect

Just took a 6520 out of the box, trying to set it up/print to it from a windows 8.1 computer, after returning a 4620 printer that had the same problem.
Ran the setup software. Setup software can't even manage to figure out what wireless network the computer it's running on is connected to - useless.
Printer can find the wireless network, and when using the wrong password, won't connect, citing wrong password.
When I use the right password, it just fails to connect.
I've rebooted my router, rebooted my computer, rebooted the printer. No good. Print doctor software is useless as it can't even find the printer.
I've turned off MAC filtering on my router, and disabled Windows Firewall. Nothing.
I have an epson printer that has no problem connecting, and every other wifi capable device I own can connect to my wifi with no problem, from both Android and apple phones to tablets to four different PCs and laptops to my freaking nest thermostat. Why can't my printer manage to just work over wifi?
I do not have a USB cable for the printer (it wasn't sold with one), btw, so trying that is out (besides, I bought this as a wireless printer, not a wired printer).
    Help please.

    Hi MattMihaly,
    Welcome to the HP forums!
I see you have a Photosmart 6520 and a Windows 8.1 computer that don't seem to want to talk to one another. I'm sorry to hear this, but I will certainly do my best to help!
I would suggest you start by following the steps for Windows 8 in this 'Unable to Find Printer' Error Message Displays on the Computer During a Wireless Network Installati... document (make sure to follow the Option two: Connect with the Wireless Setup Wizard under Step five). If that doesn't resolve it, please try the steps under Your printer has never worked over the network in the HP Wireless printing center.
I realize you may have tried some of these steps, perhaps all of them, before but often trying them in a specific order is what makes the difference

  • Order Canceled: unable to verify information

Placed a $30 order last week.  Cancelled immediately "unable to verify information" after getting the order confirmation.  Spent 45 minutes on the phone to be told, "I don't know."  Shipping and Billing info are correct.  The same credit card seems to work just fine on Amazon with the same shipping and billing information.  Anywho, I let it slide, bought the stuff I needed from Amazon (with the same card and info) and waited on the transaction to cancel from Best Buy so I could get my rewards back.
Yesterday, bought a Nest thermostat for my Father-In-Law.  I used the $25 in Rewards I had refunded from my previous cancelled order.  Bought the thermostat at a great price, used my Rewards, I was happy.  Confirmation email...Thank you for your order......seconds later......cancelled....Unable to Verify info.  I checked all info.  It's all correct.
My wife and I have spent, AT LEAST, 2 hours on the phone this morning trying to find someone that can help us.  We weren't rude or hateful.  We understand it's Thanksgiving-Black Friday-All hell breaks loose weekend.  We have just been asking the same question.  WHY was it cancelled?  AND can we please push the order through while we figure out what's going on.
I have been a Best Buy customer for as long as I can rememeber.  But, the recent hiccups are bothersome...and the fact I have spent HOURS on the phone regarding TWO purchases totaling $230 is disappointing.  Even after telling support that this gift was for my Father-In-Law for Christmas...they wouldn't let me place the order with my credit card...and give me a $25 credit...so I could have peace of mind the order is placed.  Then, I don't mind waiting on a resolution.  But, everyone I spoke to just transferred me to someone else.  I was transferred to Geek Squad TV Repair....we were transferred at least 5 times....and disconnected 3 of those 5.
I know what you're thinking.  We probabaly blasted them and were rude.  No.  We weren't.  It just seems that this is a Best Buy issue and no one knows what's going on.  I've checked the info...I called my Bank....they see the transaction and have no clue why Best Buy cancelled it.
It just loses a customer's trust when no one can give you answers or help.  I was told a Supervisor would call me back yesterday.  No one did.  I finally tried to research the issue and I see MULTIPLE THREADS with this issue.  Maybe you guys know something the DOZEN or so other agents dont.
    {Removed per Forum Guidelines}
Add to the case notes that we decided, after multiple attempts contacting support the past few days, that we chose to buy the thermostat elsewhere.  We just did not want to miss out on the sale price ending 12/1, and did not have confidence this would be resolved before that time.  We asked several of the agents to either push the order through or place the order with a $25 credit, but no one would.  And it was all maybe's regarding whether or not I'd get the same deal when and if this was fixed.
I hope you have the answer, as I would like to use the $25 in Rewards for a future online purchase.

    Hello James,
Learning that an order you've placed has been cancelled is never a pleasant discovery, so I can imagine why you'd be upset. I'd be frustrated too if the same thing happened to me, especially if an immediate resolution didn't appear to be available.
As you may have read in other threads, this cancellation message generally means that something on your order is not matching up as it should. This can be anything from a simple spelling error (or incorrect abbreviation) to the billing address on your BestBuy.com account not matching the billing address for the provided method of payment. This could also include trying to ship a product under a personal account to a business address. Additionally, as explained in BestBuy.com's Conditions of Use, remember that Best Buy reserves the right to reject any order you place with us:
BestBuy.com > Help Center > Conditions of Use

That said, I'd be glad to look into this situation on your behalf. I'll need to gather some information in order to do so, so please make sure to check your private messages when you can. • How do I get device names to show on my airport express rather than the device ID?

When I look at devices that are running on my AirPort Extreme and airport express (running as a range extender) I only see their ID numbers. How do I get it so that I can see the device name?  In other words instead of it showing 00:11:D9:38:3C:DA it would show Nest Thermostat.  ive seen this on other peoples networks and cant seem to figure it out on mine

Things are hit and miss as far as client names being displayed in AirPort Utility. You might see a device name displayed at times and not at other times.
Unfortunately, Apple provides no settings or controls in AirPort Utility for this.   Things will not look like the nice Apple advertisements if that is what you might be hoping for.
You might want to let Apple know that you would like more control for this "feature".  If so, please use the link provided below.

  • AE Flashing Amber (Status: Internet Connection) but Internet Green

Apologies if this has been asked before, I couldn't find an answer.
I'm on an AE with a Motorola SB6120 modem, paying for Comcast service.
My AE worked fine two weeks ago when I was on Centurylink at another address.
    Problem:
    AE is flashing Amber.
    Status says "Internet Connection", yet...
AirPort Utility tells me that Internet is Green. Plus, I'm typing this through my wifi/internet, so it appears I'm online.
The other major issue is that none of my other wifi-capable devices can connect to my network. Only my MacBook. Not my iPhone, nor my wife's Dell laptop or Droid phone, nor my Nest thermostat. All can see the network, but none can connect to it. They either time out or, in the case of the Dell, say they can't find an IP address.
I have factory reset the AE, unplugged and re-plugged everything in every order I can think of. I've shut down my computer a half dozen times.
When I factory reset the AE, it was green/green for a moment, then went back to flashing Amber. At that point, it had two "Status" issues: Internet Connection and DNS Servers. I entered the DNS default: 75.75.75.75 and 75.75.76.76. DNS "status" went away, but "internet connection" remains.
When I click on the AE icon on the AirPort Utility, it gives the network name I chose, IP address is blank, the serial number is there and the version is 7.6.1. It lists one wireless client.
If I drill deeper, the "internet" menu says I'm connected using DHCP. IPv4 Address is blank. Subnet Mask is 255.255.255.0 and Router address is 192.168.100.1. I gave the DNS servers above, and IPv6 servers and domain name are blank.  On the wireless menu, the network mode is "create a wireless network", the network name is correct, it's WPA2 Personal security. On the "Network" menu, the Router Mode is "Off (Bridge Mode). All else is greyed out.
If anyone can help, it would be greatly, greatly appreciated. I am at wits end, my wife cannot connect to our home network, and I am questioning why I bought an AE when every other router seems to work better.
    Many thanks.

Not sure what you mean by default, as those are Google DNS addresses. The default would be to not enter anything and allow Comcast to provide them. In a perfect world Comcast would provide you with the fastest, most reliable DNS service, but that is often not the case, which is why there is OpenDNS, Google Public DNS, etc. In any case, that's not your current problem and now that you have that part working you can decide if that's what you need later.
On the "Network" menu, the Router Mode is "Off (Bridge Mode). All else is greyed out.
There's the problem. It should be "Share a public IP address". Bridge Mode just short circuits the router, which is why only one device is connecting.

  • Ios7, ios8 wifi problem with Linksys WAP54G

I have 4 apple wireless devices (iPad mini, iPad 2, iPhone 4, iPhone5) in my house.     I have about 8 other wireless devices (non-apple).   I have a Linksys WAP54G wireless access point (on the latest software 3.08.06).
Everything worked just dandy until I upgraded to iOS7.   At that point, all apple wireless devices did the same thing:  After a random amount of idle time,  picking them back up again, they'd be disconnected from the network.   They all claimed they were connected to the wireless network, had an actual valid IP address from the WAP, but would not access the network.   Just spins.    Only solution is to deactivate wireless on the device, and re-activate.   Now works fine until the next random time it drops it again.
I figured this would be fixed in iOS8.  No luck.
All other devices of different types (windows 8 lenovo laptops, Roku boxes, Tivo boxes, Nest thermostat, etc...) ALL have always connected just fine to the wireless network, and the Apple devices USED TO until iOS7.
Clearly they broke something in iOS7, and it is still broken in iOS8.
I realize this is an old WAP, but come on.
anyone else have this issue?    Apple, what did you break and why can't you fix it?
    thanks
    tom

I am in the UK and have one of the fastest fibre optic broadband on the market but have the same issue with my iPad air since downloading ios8. I can no longer watch Netflix and pages close, or just go incredibly slow. Apple are you going to get this fixed. My iPad drops outs of my broadband connection and buffers constantly yet I have no problem with other devices.
    thanks
