Nested overlays.

can anyone point me in the direction of decent tutorials/resources on nested overlays - i want to create a button inside a scrollable frame, the dps tips app barely touches on this and the colin flemming videos just go on about the ability to do it - not actually showing you how. brilliant.

Nested Overlays and Sprint 18

Hello
What we can do now with nested overlays seems awesome and i wanna try and use these functionalities

I will look dumb for sure but erm ... It looks like something called SPRINT 18 is required to be able to make nested overlays.
What I can't figure out is
-what exactly is SPRINT 18
- and where/how can I get it ?

Sprint 18 (also called version 18 or v18) is the current set of Folio Producer tools. You can download the tools from the Dashboard (https://digitalpublishing.acrobat.com) or from the Adobe Downloads page.

DPS (Andriod devie): Nested overlays are working on other (horizontal) orientation

Hi,
As per the requirement, we have to set multiple overlays on few pages. E.g. if on vertical orientation there is multiplay overlay (scrollable frame in Object State) then on horizontal orientation the button (button to dispaly the object state) do not work.Please suggest the solution or the workaround for the same.

Vertical Orientation:
There are 4 scrollable contents in my MSO which I'm calling from button. In Description,
- there are 4 MSOs and each MSO contains the scrollable content (with pan only method)
- there are 4 buttons on top and by click on each button I call-up the requested MSO.
Horizontal Orientation:
- there are 7 thumb graphics in initial view
- I created 7 full page graphics and put them in MSO
- call each graphic by clicking on the thumb.
In the above scenario the vertical orientation is working well but on the horizontal orientation the button doesn't work. I even try to rename the MSO, layer and its sub-layer but no success.
Please suggest.

Pan & Zoom image in Multistate object

Hi Guys,
I tried to create a multistate object with images that have a pan & zoom function, this works fine when I previewed this
in the contentviewer on the desktop. But when I previewed it on my iPad de images won't show, however the scrollbars for the
images are visible. Anybody an idea how to solve this problem?

Scrollable frames inside swipe MSOs

I'm trying to put an scrolling text frame inside of a scrolling box all inside a swipe able mso. The intended effect is that the user pulls a tab up from the bottom of the screen to expose most of the text, and then swipes the text to see the rest.
The effect is fine if the MSO is controlled by buttons, but when swipe between states is turned on, the scrolling text no longer works.
I tried changing the names of the items as suggested in James Lockman's article from a few years ago (http://blogs.adobe.com/jlockman/2012/02/08/nested-overlay-solution-for-dps/#comment-55), but that didn't work.
Any ideas?

You’ve stumbled upon a limitation. That scroll within a scroll will work but not once you put it into an MSO.
Want to guess how I know this? <g

Multiple scrolling frames in MSOs

Can anyone else confirm that if you have more than one scrolling frame inside an MSO, at least one of those scrolling frames will appear blank when viewed on the iPad?
I'm having a lot of trouble trying to work around this; wondered if anyone else has encountered this...

With v18, we changed the architecture of slideshow overlays to allow nested overlays. In doing so, we inadvertently changed the behavior of slideshows created with previous tools. For example, behaviors such as the timing of auto-playing slideshows and stopping at the last image no longer worked properly. We think we fixed all of these "regressive bugs," but we want to make sure.

Hi, I'm using DPS via Creative Cloud and actually building an APP/E.Mag.
I constructed a navigation that open/closes via the pic toggle effect. within this navigation menu i have several submenus in text form, a hyperlink with navto:// functionality leads then to the respective article nsde the folio.
I copy/pasted this navigation into all articles so it will appear everywhere. Now the problem: I can open/close the navigation everywhere. but the links for navigation only work on the first article where I constructed it. Does this mean I have to rebuild the hole submenus in every article from scratch? And why does this not work so that I can understand the reason? Any idea about how I can make this with low effort?

It happens to me whenever I use copy/paste, and also using the content collector tool, to place objects with nested overlays and links. They all change to a different name, or get blank.

Hi there what are the upcoming new features in v 21 and myabe others ?

The DPS team did a lot of infrastructure work, so the v21 release isn't nearly as robust as some earlier releases. Here's a list that I'll push live later today:
Viewer Version control
When you create a new folio using the v21 Folio Builder panel, you can target either the v20 or v21 viewer version. This option is especially useful if either the newest version of the Adobe Content Viewer is awaiting approval or if you’re creating folios for a v20 viewer app. If you create a v20 folio, you can edit the folio’s properties to update it to v21. However, you cannot roll back a v21 folio to v20. You cannot specify a viewer version earlier than v20.
Preview on Device for active layout (iOS)
Before v21, Preview on Device was available only for entire folios. With v21, you can now use Preview on Device in the Folio Overlays panel to preview the current layout (iOS only). Connect your iPad or iPhone to your computer and open the Adobe Content Viewer app. In the Folio Overlays panel, choose Preview on [device name].
Social Sharing improvements
Several Social Sharing limitations have been addressed. Nested overlays, buttons, videos, HTML articles, and scrollable frames now work much better in the Web Viewer. In addition, the Web Viewer now displays articles marked as Advertisement or Hide from TOC properly.
You can use the Account Administration tool to turn off Web Viewer while still enabling social sharing through the iPad.
Auto-view during folio download
When the Download or Buy button is tapped in the viewer library, the viewer displays the folio while remaining articles continue to download. Before this release, the View button became active during download, but the user had to tap it to begin viewing the folio.
Auto-download after successful subscription
When a user successfully subscribes to a viewer app, the most recent folio begins downloading automatically. Users no longer need to tap the Download button.

Pull out tab - two way to scroll

Hello!
I wanted to reproduce the 'two way scroll pull out tab' I saw on the DPS tips app (Advanced Overlays).
I was able to make the the pull out tab and to include another scrolling frame inside But I have problems with the buttons. They just don't work.
I'd like to do the same as in the example with a clicable list that change a multistate object.
Is there some tips to include buttons in scrolling frame?

When you paste the content frame into the container frame in the nested overlay, the buttons lose their actions. Use the Layers panel to select each button and specify the action. It helps if you give your buttons logical names like "Asparagus Button."

Nested MSO, slideshow inside MSO triggered by button, invisible on start, able to open/close

Consider the following scenario:
(albeit, this may not even be the right way to do this, or perhaps such functionality is not possible based on existing tools at this time, however, I thought I would post and see if anyone has a trick to share...)
I have a slideshow on the page, it is set to auto play.
I would like to hide it initially, and have it trigger with a button... and then let the user close it. Much like the "light box" effects we have all come to know from the web.
Seems easy enough.
However, in my first attempt to do this I did the following:
1- create an OPEN button (F1)
2- create a container box and a CLOSE button, grpup them (F2)
3- turn them both into an MSO (M1)
4- set the button in F1 to trigger F2 (open state)
5- set the button in F2 to trigger F1 (close state)
-> test, works.
next step, slideshow!
I grab 5 images, create a new MSO (M2).
Turn it into a slideshow Folio Overlay...
-> test, works.
Now this is where it gets funky...
MY FAIL 1- If I try to take M2 and then right click M1, there is NO paste into option.
MY FAIL 2- If I click on the Object States Panel, and then Right click State 2 for M1, there is no "past into option"
MY FAIL 3- If I try to "Alt+Ctrl+V" with M2 into State 2 for M1 it does not work.
--> nor does any other scenario where I attempt to paste any MSO into another MSO
I have even tried
x- grouping the MSO slideshow with a non MSO element such as a frame, text boxt, image, ect..
x- taking the 5 images and pasting them into the MSO seperate, and then trying to turn them into a new MSO inside State 2, which the new MSO button is greyed out and will not let me apply it.
Possible solution I have come up with after looking over alot of Bob's stuff in the tutorials area
(PS his videos and tut's realy help, its a differant kind of thinking going on here with DPS, I imagine it relates to how the C in the binary works and is translated by the InDesign GUI into app code... would be nice to just type in "function on_tap(){open_slideshow(vars);}" lol silly programmer, this is primarily a tool for designers ... but I do think its awesomeness, as a programmer, I dont even want to write code anymore after using DPS and Phone Gap...),
so... here it is, not necessarily the most attractive...
1- Make the slide show MSO, push to BACK, set to auto play and swipe allowed...
2- place a large opaque box on top of the slideshow, group it with the OPEN button
3- create a close button
4- turn them into an MSO, now there is an 'open' button in state 1 on top of an opaque box that sends to state 2, and a 'close' button in state 2 that sends to state 1
This seems to work, I have not tested it on all devices, the iPad will kind of do this wierd glitchy thing, as if it "knows" there is something moving underneath the opaque box. Depending on how I have positioned scrollable frames on top of these elements from a stacking perspective there can be some unexpected behavior. The best results I have had from more complex layouts is to get creative with positioning...
any other suggestions, tips, tricks, would be appreciated

POSSIBLE BUG:
ANYTIME I try to take ANYTHING that is already using the FOLIO OVERLAY and right click the STATE in the STATES PANEL
In Design total crash!!! The only time I can take a FOLIO OVERLAY (FO) and "right click paste into" an MSO state is by clicking on the state on the stage, it can not be done from the panel, the panel only works with non "FO" items... Even though the state in the panel shows the "past into" option, if I do, *poof* instant app crash... FYI for anyone toying with this. Kudo's to Adobe for the outstanding "auto save" feature. It has saved me time, and there for in some strange way, has also saved some of my life.

@zagarskas – nested MSOs are currently NOT supported by Adobe.
However we could build such a construct by using ExtendScript (Adobe's flavor of JavaScript).
The problem with that is, that Buttons inside a nested MSO will not work as expected. At least my testing is showing that.

Is there a way to display frame numbers of a .mov in an overlay or equiv

I have a .mov that I would like to add it's frame numbers as an overlay on every frame in quicktime (or other program). Has anyone ever done this? Anyone have any clue how?

Like a Timecode reader?
It's simple. Use a timecode generator filter. Go to your effects, and then go to the Video Bin and you will see Timcode Reader and Timecode Generator, they will both work. Nest your sequence, with Control+C to create a nested seqeunces, I'm on a PC at another location and can't see if it's included in the FCE software.
If it's not, you can create a new sequence and add that seqeunce to the new seqeunce you created. Then drag the effect to this seqeunces, in your new sequences (sorry a little confusing). This adds the filter to everything in the seqeunce, then you don't have to go every clip and individually add the filter. Then export.

Changes to master nested sequence not updating in new sequence

Good morning - I have spent the past half hour or so searching the forum for this topic but have not found the answer. If the answer exists elsewhere, please point me in that direction; otherwise, here goes:
I created a nested sequence by simply dragging one sequence (A) from the browser into a new sequence (B) in the timeline. Later, I went back to Seq A and replaced all of the audio (which was in-camera audio) with clean audio from a Tascam field recorder. So far so good. However, Seq B still plays the original camera audio and is not reflecting any of the changes I made to Seq A.
I tried deleting audio render files, quitting and restarting FCP, etc., all to no avail. I have the latest versions of the OS and FCP. Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

As you've probably found there are several ways to create/edit nests into sequences. The manual points out an advantage of using nested sequences is you can make a change and that change will be reflected in all the subsequent nests. As you've also found out, this isn't exactly true.
The only way I've found to have communications carry forward to nests from the original sequence is if I edit the sequence into another sequence via the Canvas overlay/edit keyboard shortcuts from the Viewer. I've found dragging and dropping to do as you've found.

Freaky nested sequences

Hi, anyone experienced the following:
When double clicking on a nested sequence in the timeline to edit that sequence, any edits or changes you make to that sequence do not update back in the parent timeline. For instance if you cut a clip out or rearrange clips in the nested sequence then go back to the parent timeline you see the sequence as it was before you made those changes. Then go back to the nested sequence timeline and see all your edits/changes have been lost!!
The only workaround I see is to remove the nested sequence from the parent timeline, make your edits/changes then drop the sequence back into the parent timeline.
Am I missing something? I thought it would be a case of the nested sequence auto-updating itself in the parent timelline after any changes made, as for example in after effects.

Hello Chris...
Did your nested sequence need rendering when you created it? If so, the problem is caused by FCP referencing the origonal render files, which themselves act as little QT clips.
After you have made your changes in the 'open' nested sequence, back in your main sequence, you need to force the nested seq to render again. You can do this by quickly moving the opacity overlay line up and down, or disabling - re-anabling the clip. The changes will now be recognised.

Chroma Keyer and overlaying an object in FCE on a freeze frame.

I seem to have lost my notes in a recent move, need help. I shoot sports footage and I am using FCE. I have a series of 2 second freeze frames that I nedd to overlay a green arrow (pdf imported from Pages.) What are the steps using chroma keyer to 1. get rid of all the matter other then the green arrow (with the dropper) 2. anchor the arrow over a point and 3. rotate arrow to point at subject. I vaguely remember it being fairly straight forward but I am missing something.
Is there a way to get the pdf or jpg arrow removed from it background before importing into FCE......so I can just import the arrow shape and not the page?

The easiest way to do this is to convert the graphic (the arrow) to one with a transparent background, then you won't have to do any keying at all.
Open you PDF file in Preview.app.
Save the file as a .png file.
Now you should have the arrow as a .png file loaded in Preview.
In the toolbar, click on the triangle nest to the Select button, and choose "Instant Alpha"
Click down and drag you mouse a slight bit on the background you wish to remove, and release the mouse button.
The background should now be selected.
Press the Delete key.
The background should now disappear, leaving just the arrow.
Now save your document again.
If you now import your .png version of the arrow into FC, you can just place it above the video you want it to appear on and it will automatically be keyed correctly.
