Netboot Problem

Hello,
I'm sending the following command in order to netboot across subnets to use DeployStudio.
sudo bless --netboot --booter tftp://10.10.129.57/NetBoot/NetBootSP0/DeansTest.nbi/i386/booter --kernel tftp://10.10.129.57/NetBoot/NetBootSP0/DeansTest.nbi/i386/mach.macosx --options "rp=nfs:10.10.129.57:/private/tftpboot/NetBoot/NetBootSP0:DeansTest.nbi/DeployS tudioRuntime.sparseimage"
It seems to be looking for a file I've never seen before:

Any ideas on why I can't a good netboot and use DeployStudio?

I was just thinking... NetBoot/NetInstall sets now use a new folder structure which is architecture-specific. This won't help you boot PowerPC systems from a Tiger client sourced from an Intel Mac as that's not Universal. That's limited only to Intel Macs which can run that particular build of Tiger.
Only a freshly created Leopard NetInstall will work with both PowerPC and Intel systems meeting the minimum system requirements for Leopard.
The NetBoot admin interface references which architecture the NetBoot OS is... not the OS inside the NetInstall System.dmg image. If you created your NetInstall on Leopard Server is may have built the NetBoot OS from itself - which would explain the Universal tag you can see.

  • Help! Netboot Problems

We're having problems with our Netboot setup - so we figured we'd just delete it all and start over.
But we can't disable the share point for Netboot.
In our /Library/Netboot/ folder are two nbi folders: "/Netboot Startup.nbi" and "/tigerboot.nbi" (The folder we created).
If we just drag the two folders to the trash - Workgroup Manager gets annoyed and says "The sharepoint has moved please "Remove" or put it back." If we attempt to remove it says we are not logged in as the administrator for the domain, please enter your name and password for the domain 127.0.0.1 (which is not the address we are using for our network). We have tried every name and password we can think of - we've logged in as "diradmin", <Owner> (for the system), "Root"
All network services are halted in System Admin (Netboot is off). How do we "reset" the Netboot system so we can start over?

Thank you for replying. We started by using the Netboot function in ServerAdmin - but it never "released" the netboot sharepoint. So we started trying other things (we didn't empty the trash - just dragged folders there to see if we could force it to release) to see if we could "clear" it.
We have a network of 15 systems that allow users to boot to a home directory on the server - DNS is a critical part of that setup - is it possible that DNS is partially okay (works with users logging in) but not set properly for netboot?
Also netboot works across some of our systems - but is extremely slow on others. Seems to be machine dependent, changing ethernet cables and/or switches seems to make no difference to the speed of the boot.

  • NetBoot problem with tftpd

Client machines are unable to NetBoot from the server. The globe flashes for about 20-30 seconds, then it boots to the internal hard drive. I believe the problem is related to tftpd. Whenever a client machine tries to NetBoot, the following line appears a few hundred times in /var/log/system.log (but with different pid numbers):
com.apple.launchd[1] (com.apple.tftpd[7208]): Stray process with PGID equal to this dead job: PID 7209 PPID 1 tftpd
I tried changing the tftp program arguments in /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/tftp.plist from i to s (and back again), but that didn't help.
I have a backup of my NetBoot files on an external drive. I hooked that drive up to another server and NetBoot works fine from that machine, so I know the boot images are OK.
Running 10.5.4 Server. Farily fresh install... about 3 weeks old. All other services work OK.

    *Hi Tod*
+*. . . I have a backup of my NetBoot files on an external drive. I hooked that drive up to another server and NetBoot works fine from that machine . . .*+
This can only count as a true test if the other machine is exactly the same. Same build, same OS etc. If it is exactly the same then there has to be a configuration setting somewhere that is different? Especially as you say everything else works OK.
If the DHCP Service is with the 10.5.4 Server what happens if you disconnect everyone from the network except for the Server and one client? Can the client successfully NetBoot now? I would also check the Filters Settings in case something silly has introduced itself. You have to work really hard to make NetBoot work with anything other than a Class C sub-net so I would eliminate that as a potential problem. How were the images made? For example you should be using 10.4 SIU to create 10.4 images.

  • Subnet netboot problem

I have an OS 10.4.8 Xserve running AFP, NFS, & NetBoot services. All DHCP & DNS services are provided by Cisco routers & Dell servers as part of a college-wide network. The client Macs are split across four separate VLANs with the Xserve on one of the four VLANs. Both NICs are enable for NetBoot and I have also enabled the Xserve's DHCP service but with no subnets or static maps set up so that the service is running but not handing out IP addresses. The VLAN routers have an "ip helper" pointing to the ip address of the NetBoot server BUT I can't get any of the client machines on the non-Xserve VLANs to boot when holding down the 'N' key; any machine on the Xserve VLAN will NetBoot consistently. The Open Firmware and Terminal firmware workarounds are successful but I need the 'N' key option to work.
I have seen the Apple kBase document 107655 and am somewhat intrigued by the fact that Apple Tech support will help over the phone IF you have purchased a Server Support contract, which suggests to me that there needs to be some modification to the server configuration, rather than just a simple router config command, to resolve the problem!
Has anybody out there actually received phone support from Apple for this issue and if so would they be happy to pass on the appropriate server (or any other) fix?
Finally I apologise if this issue has been resolved successfully elsewhere on the discussion list but I have spent an awful lot of time trawling a large number of lists for a suitable solution and come up with a blank.

    Leif, thanks for the reply.
Yes I've read & re-read the article (and many more!) and also passed all the info on to my network system administrator who has configured the subnet routers accordingly but without success. I would still like to know what advice or instruction Apple Server phone support would offer but our IT dept can't justify the cost of Server support for this single issue as all other aspects of server configuration are documented fully.
    Thanks,
    Glenn.

  • Netboot problems

I have a classroom of first generation iMac G5. They boot from the local drive, and I have an Xserve setup with netboot for easy installation. One of the computers now refuse to netboot. It acts like it never finds the netboot server, and then revs the fans to max. I tried netbooting some of the other computers, and they all worked fine. I moved the broken one to a position where it is working, in case it was a network problem, but to no avail. When I boot the current image, will have a network connection, so it doesn't seem like a network problem. I tried resetting the PRAM, it made no difference. Any ideas on what can be wrong with it?
    Thanks

How many of each do you have, try turning on and then off again the mac address filter, sometimes that prevents booting, if they cant get an ip then the dhcp is banning them, check your dhcpd_leases file, see what clients are listed, you could try and manually edit this and add the mac addresses of the clients that wont boot, if they cant get an ip then its nothing to do with your netboot image, or netboot, if they cant get passed the globe icon then they cant find a dhcp server or cant get an ip from said server.
go to open firmware and type
    bootp_en0
or something like that, best do a search for the network boot command from open firmware,
you can then se eif it gets an error, if it gets to tfftp.
Ive been netbooting since the very first version in OS X Server 1, its improved but some bits still crash
If some boot and others not then maybe a dhcpd_leases file, or the mac address filter list, by turning that filter on and off can resolve this, and you can manually edit the dhcpd_leases file, even though it likes to rewrite itself.

  • Netboot computers and netbooted computer name problems

i have 14 imacs that i netboot. prior to tiger the netbooted computer names would be assigned noramlly say netboot001, netboot002 up to 14.
with tiger and the system image utility when i run a new netboot image sometimes the computer name is netboot001 etc and sometimes it replicates out say frederick charrons computer(1), frederick charrons computer(2).
i assume that there is a problem in the way the computer names are dished out to the netbooted imaces and there fore i assume there may be a potential for prblems with information back and forth to the server. can anyone help me with this and offer a solution that i may be missing.
i have been netbooting imaces since imacs and server were made available and this is the only time that i hav experienced this problem, ile with tiger server.
osx server   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

There is not a problem with having identical usernames on two different computers. You also suggested the "Computer name" was the same. Is this the computer name at the top of the "Sharing" preference panel? If so, those need to be different.

  • My Problems with Netboot, PPC iMacG5, 10.5.6, Leopard Server-Solved

Several contributors steps helped me out, in this archived thread:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1649502
I have added my own steps, for record, as I could not add to the archived thread.
Problem: OSX 10.5.6 Server, set to an "Octopus" configuration,
( Standalone server, hooked into a Cisco 2950 Switch, switch manages DHCP, keeps all traffic localized)
Hooked iMac G5 clients into switch. Set Server to netboot a PPC Leopard 10.5.6
image made from same iMac G5 client. Hooked six iMac G5's into the switch,
one fired off successfully, five all failed, going to Kernel Panic after first one
kicked off successfully. Tested scenario with 3 Intel MacBooks imaging
an intel MB 10.5.6 image, same server and switch, all deployed successfully.
Following a combination of Brian Neeson's and Kellefson's Steps:
    1. Stop Netboot Service on Server.
    2. Disable Netboot Shares, save changes
    3. Launch Activity Monitor, stop nfsd service. ( Force Quit) It auto starts again
    4. Re-enable Netboot Shares
    5. Start Netboot Service, select PPC Image, Set to PPC Achitecture only, save changes
    6. Reboot Leopard Server.
Issue is now resolved, and images deploy successfully, testing 2 PPC iMac G5s without fail.
Posting this so I can set a subscription to it ( so I can find it faster, I cannot set
a subscription to the archived post) and to help others with same issue.

Ok, I finally had some time to come back to this
and try out a few things.
One of the things that kept perplexing me about this was that only
PPC White iMac G5's, 1.6ghz models, were constantly affected by this issue.
I tried it looking at it from the server end: Recreated the Netboot NFS share point,
recreated the 10.5.6 image as a gold master, made sure all nbi's were in their proper
    locales.
I tried looking at it from the iMac itself: swapping out Hard drives, Logic Boards,
Zappring PRAM, replacing and swapping out Ram, etc.
Finally after stepping away from it for a week to look at
    InstaDMG, it dawned on me......
Josh, ( I believe) in his webinar, said that to build your
image using instaDMG, you should use Leopard 10.5 Retail disc as the
base of choice, and then put everything in as a package deployment
    on top of that.
+So that got me to thinking, what if 10.5.6 was problematic for deployment,+
+but not so for updating the system in general?+
That got me to remembering that that wouldn't be the first time Apple
has released an update that screwed up NetInstalling
    ( 10.5.2, 10.4.10, and 10.3.4 come to mind).
*So I then decided to try a new test:*
I went back to a good known working no problems White iMac G5 PPC 1.6ghz machine,
wiped the HD, and installed 10.5.0 on it, and then put all my apps back on it.
I then updated every app and patched the Apple essentials ( Quicktime, Airport0
but did not update the OS.
I then Target FW'd it to my Xserve, and used Apple's SIU to create the image.
Then, I deployed it back to three iMacs in a row through the network.
Success! no KPs and the iMacs all flawlessly deployed.
I then tried another set of three, and success again....all three had no KP
at booting into Netinstall, and all three deployed successfully.
*So I believe that I have fixed my issue!*
My next test is to create an image that will post deploy the 10.5.6 combo update
to the iMacs after the 10.5.0 image is deployed, but even if I run into
problems there, My workaround will be just to deploy 10.5.0, and then
ARD out 10.5.6 combo after the machines have restarted and booted successfully.

  • Netbooting and NetInstalling Problems

    Hello All!
I have a problem, I have created an image off of a known to be working (I am using it now) install from my personal computer to boot off of for computer problems. But, when testing it out my computer would startup, display the rotating globe, then, where the apple is going to come up, a large black box appears and the progress wheel freezes.
I tried a NetInstall off of the Tiger Install disc and when booting off of it, the computer does the rotating globe, the apple appears then the computer completely shuts down.

How did you create the image? And as with any other service, DNS needs to be configured correctly for Netboot/Netinstall to function reliably.

  • Problems imaging from netboot

    Hello all,
I am having a bit of an issue imaging now that I have upgraded to 10.6 server.
I have multiple netboot images enabled in my NetBoot panel and they are all set to Diskless. Whenever a client machine is netbooted off any of these images, /private/var/netboot is mounted off of /dev/disk0s2. This prevents me from unmounting or formatting the internal drive.
Does anyone have any suggestions on how keep /private/var/netboot from mounting so I can work with the internal drive?
    Thanks,
    Shawn

  • Odd Problem Making 10.6.3 NetBoot Image

I have netboot volumes for 10.3, 10.4 and 10.5. They all have some useful utilities on them, and any time I need to fix any Mac, brand new or very old, I just boot the appropriate netboot image (and usually run diskwarrior). Overall it's worked very effectively. I just whipped up my first 10.6 netboot image. I do them all the same way, I install OS X on a firewire drive, then I install everything I want on it. Set all my preferences exactly the way I want them. Then I use the System Image Utility to turn it into a NetBoot image. So this 10.6.3 image boot perfectly off the firewire drive every single time. But every time I turn it into a netboot image and boot off of it (from any mac), I get this odd font error at startup:
    http://img405.imageshack.us/img405/1858/screenshot20100418at125.png
I haven't touched any fonts. I haven't installed any graphics related software at all. Just utilities, and openoffice. And like I said... this volume boots perfect as a firewire drive. It's when you convert it to a netboot image and boot it, it gives you this strange error at boot. Any ideas what the deal is? Yes I am making the .nbi folder on 10.6 server. It should just work

This solution came from a conglomeration of the posts here and I was able to repeat my results. To make the error go away, boot your source into target mode and after connecting it to your image creation machine (OSX Server in my case) remove all the directories/folders in /private/var/folders; mine were named zz, t9, and 43. I tried doing this before booting into target mode but they get re-created immediately so they never really go away. Hope this helps someone.

  • OS X 10.10.2 Server. Having problems with Netboot Image

Hey there guys, it's the first time i'm having to deal with an OS X server.
I've made a Mac Mini into a server, and would like to use it as an Imaging Server for our Company's laptops, which are MB pro's.
I've checked that i've updated the OS on the Mac Mini and the MacBook Pro that i took the image from to the latestth
soo... I made the image from the laptop, got it on the Server and it's in the Library/Netboot/NetbootSP0 folder.
The Server app picks it up, and it's set so that you can install the image on other laptops via Ethernet.
I'm using an apple Ethernet to thunderbolt adapter for the MacBooks
At first i thought i've messed up something with the NetBoot image, so I had to Create another one.
First one got Recognised by the laptops when i try to Boot while pressing [Alt+N], but when it booted that way, nothing happened - it just went to the "Select language screen" that you get when turning it on for the first time.
The second image wouldn't be recognised at all and same thing happens.
I can give you any additional info if required, just ask me.
    Thanks

Without any more detail it looks like you've misconfigured something somewhere? Either the workstation you've used to build the image has somehow not 'taken' properly (don't ask me to explain as it can happen sometimes for no discernible reason) or deploy studio and/or your server (amounts to the same thing) have not been configured properly and/or the network in terms of what the clients use for DNS has not been thought through properly?
It may be none of the above but they are good places to start the debug process.
What we need is what you're basing your private network around in terms of DNS; e.g.: server's fully qualified domain name, does it resolve on both pointers, can your clients resolve it on both pointers, have you configured deply studio's depository correctly and so-on.
You don't need to use alt N. Either use the N key or just use the alt key to select the Boot Disk Manager. If you've valid nbis they'll show up there. DeployStudio's netboot set is just a simple, minimal, network-based bootloader. It's typically not very large. Anywhere from 2-5GB. If your nbis are larger then you've not created what you think you've created.
Hopefully some of the questions I'm asking will start you looking in the right places?

  • I am trying to set up netboot

I am trying to set up netboot on a server running 10.4.11. Everything seems to be set up right but it will not work. I checked the logs and can see that the client is sending a request but the server never sends an offer. I upgraded to 10.4 from 10.3 so I tried the fix that was given when you did this but it didn't seem to make a difference. It did however raise a question for me the xinetd.d folder that I copied to the desktop as they said to do is empty. I than went in and found the xinetd.d folder and it to is empty. Should it be empty if not what should be in it.
    Dave

I've never done a 10.3 to 10.4 upgrade, but common problem areas tend to be:
    - DNS
    - DHCP
    - NFS sharepoints
    - bootp sync issues
Tearing down the NetBoot service, and setting it back up again may address the NFS and bootp issues.

  • Problems with Lion Software Update service

I just recently upgraded our Xserve to Lion server so we could start deploying Lion clients.  The upgrade seemed to go fine, but the Software Update service may end up being a deal breaker.  I can get Lion clients to connect to the server for updates, that is not a problem.  The problem is when Lion client says it needs to download additional software to run a program, in our case a Java runtime environment.  When it looks on the software update server it says "The software is currently unavailable, please try again later."  If I point it back to Apple it works just fine.  We need to have our clients recieving updates locally for bamdwisth reasons, but if they cant get the software that they need then it makes having a local SU server useless.  Anyone know how to fix that?  And on a side note the new Server app that is supplied with Lion doesn't list SU as a service, and I can't figure out how to add or remove the services.  Am I missing something?  Thanks.

To access many of the Server Tools in Lion Server you'll have to go to apple's website and download the Server Admin for 10.7 Server. This is the familar to 10.6.x server admin tool that apple does not include as the standard set of tools. Once you download it you'll have access to these additional services via the GUI:
    DHCP
    DNS
    Firewall
    Mail
    NAT
    NetBoot
    Open Directory
    Podcast Producer
    RADIUS
    Software Update Xgrid

I wasn't getting this far (/tftpboot line) until I turned on the firewall to allow port 69 traffic but it seems that the service hangs when the client machine is supposed recevie the payload of the diskimage.
I don't know how a perfect netboot service goes to $h*t after a clean install with no configuration changed. I've verfied that nothing with our dhcp service nor dns has been changed and also verified that the server name has been added to the ip_helper.
    Any help is greatly apperciated.

My experiences with netboot on snow leopard server and a few other observations: Point 1 - Never have wireless on whether it be client or server when trying to netboot client. Point 2 - Must use standard mtu setting -1500- on server under prefs. ethernet advanced, doesn't seem to matter on client -I use 7936 for 600TL Readynas on clients only-. Point 3 - It seems that if you ever use wireless on the server it messes it up for good -Took about 8 installs to learn this the hard way-. Point 4 - It seems when logging into workgroup manager with default popup of machine name.local and default user name messes server up if you have a domain name, example of how it should be is: machine name.domain name.com, org, etc. Then username would be diradmin, then password ***** so that settings will hold if you go in to change anything. Many days were spent by a friend and myself learning these few things pertaining to my machine and may help others with weird problems on snow leopard server. If anyone here knows why this is, please post, although my machine is working properly, I am curious. Thank You. By the way, I am using all the latest updates except itunes 10.
