Netinstall Image Won't boot...

Hi,
I have succesfully created a 10.5.6 image in SIU from a pre-configured image of one of our iMacs. Set up the Netboot service OK, and when I got to Sys Prefs in any client machine and select Startup Disc, the image is shown in there as an option, however, when I select the option and try to reboot the machine, the client just sits with the Globe logo for a little while, and then reverts back to booting up from the internal HD. Is there some sort of log I can look at to see what is happening here?

This could be caused by a server misconfiguration, or by external forces.
Do a 'showmount -e' in the terminal on the server. Does the returned path properly reflect the location of the image(s)?
Another simple thing to try is: 'sudo killall -HUP bootpd'. This will force bootpd to re-read its configuration file.
You can also check to see that tftp is functioning properly. There is a walkthrough of the at Mike Bombich's site... http://www.bombich.com/mactips/netboot.html

  • Mavericks NetBoot Image won't boot (access denied symbol)?

I'm starting the process of creating some new NetBoot Images to support Mavericks and I'm having boot issues that I've never come across before (I've been building NetBoot images for years using using OS X 10.4–10.8). I always make sure to use the latest OS version available at the time to support our latest hardware (mainly iMacs and Mac minis).
Right now, I'm using a Mac mini (Late 2012) running OS X 19.9.3 (13D65) to build a Mavericks-based "Tool Kit" NetBoot Image (for drive recovery tasks, drive repairs, etc.). Using the same process I've always followed, I've installed/configured the Mavericks "Tool Kit" system (also OS X 19.9.3, build 13D65) itself on an external FireWire drive attached to the Mac mini, then run System Image Utility (10.9.3, build 677) from the Mac mini (internal drive) to then create the NetBoot Image (using the system on the external FireWire drive as the source).
Everything proceeds as normal, but when I load the image onto my NetBoot Server (OS X Snow Leopard Server, dedicated to NetBoot), client machines fail to boot off the image (they attempt the NetBoot, but get the "Access Denied" flashing symbol. Normally, I'd get this when trying to boot a system pre-installed with a newer version of the OS than exists in the NetBoot Image (or, when the hardware requires a hardware-specific OS version, which isn't what the NetBoot Image is running), but that's not the case here (as I'm able to successfully boot these same machines using my 10.8 "Tool Kit" NetBoot Image).
As well, I'm able to boot these machines from the Mavericks "Tool Kit" system via the FireWire drive directly. So, hardware is "capable" of booting the system I've built, but not when attempting to boot via my NetBoot Server.
So, I'm wondering if anything has changed with Mavericks that would result in Mavericks-based NetBoot Images not being able to boot from images served from Snow Leopard Server? Honestly, I don't think this is the case though, because I'm able to serve DeployStudio-created Mavericks-based NetBoot images (served from the NetBoot Service running on this Snow Leopard Server box) to these same machines, without issue. The the DeployStudio created image was built using the same "Tool Kit" system as a base for the image creation. So, it really doesn't seem like an issue with Snow Leopard Server nor the Mavericks base-system I've built to create the images—it seems like it's an issue with the images created via System Image Utility.
Anyway, I'll continue my trouble-shooting, but if anyone has any advice, it'd be greatly appreciated!
    Thanks,
    Kristin.

In this discussion it is said that 10.9.x does not NetBoot on certain models due to a microcode issue.

  • Btrfs: System won't boot anymore after unclean shutdown

    Hi,
I have a problem with my ArchLinux (kernel 3.19.2-1-ARCH).
I have my root partition as BTRFS and no /boot partition.
After an unclean shutdown the system won't boot anymore.
GRUB loads the kernel and the kernel starts but it hangs saying: Mounted /dev/sda3 on real root.
Then, I have to start a Live CD and do:
    btrfsck /dev/sda3
After that the system boots correctly.
I've tried adding fsck to the HOOKS in the mkinitcpio.conf file and in fact it tries to fsck the filesystem (but with BTRFS, fsck.btrfs doesn't work...)
    What can I do?
    Thanks

I'm also having this problem. I tried booting up the netinstall image to debug it, but I can't mount my btrfs volume from there either: mount just hangs. After a while, the kernel goes:
[...] INFO: task mount:612 blocked for more than 120 seconds.
    [...] Not tainted 3.19.2-1-ARCH #1
    [...] "echo 0 > /proc/sys/kernel/hung_task_timeout_secs" disables this message.
[...] INFO: task btrfs-transacti:636 blocked for more than 120 seconds.
    [...] Not tainted 3.19.2-1-ARCH #1
    [...] "echo 0 > /proc/sys/kernel/hung_task_timeout_secs" disables this message.
From this post I guessed that I might just need to wait so that I could defrag the volume once it was mounted, but it's been hanging for over 15min now (the message above continues to come up periodically).
Like the OP in the thread I linked to above, my btrfs volume is inside an LVM volume (which is on dm-crypt). Don't know whether that's relevant.

  • Mac Pro crashes on boot, won't boot from install CD - help!

Hi - I've got a Mac Pro which will only boot in safe mode - it goes to grey screen before login under normal conditions, and has a kernel panic when told to boot from the install DVD. Please help!
For background: I've got a dual-core 2007 Mac Pro and a 2 core 2008 aluminium MacBook, both of which I've been backing up to their own external drives with Time Machine. I've just bought a NetGear ReadyNAS (2TB) to back them both up because I ran out of space on the Mac Pro's two internal 500GB drives - I've put in a new Samsung 1TB drive, which is the only hardware upgrade I've made to either machine. The MacBook backs up fine to the NAS over a wireless network, but the MacPro kept crashing the system while making its first attempts at backing up, both within Time Machine and when just copying the TM backup files across in Finder. It would hang about 10GB into backups of approx 1TB, as here - http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1550 - but the NAS formatting works for the MacBook.
On advice from NetGear I put the following command into Terminal:
    sudo sysctl -w net.inet.tcp.delayed_ack=0
Now the Mac Pro won't boot except in safe mode - it won't boot from the install disc, either the 10.4.9 that came with the machine or the 10.6 disc I bought later. if I let the boot run as normal, it locks up on the grey screen (as here - http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2570). If I boot with the install CD (holding down 'c') I get a kernel panic (as here - http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.6/en/8965.html). If I hold down 'option' I can choose between the HD or the install CD, but each option just takes me to the same places as above. Safe boot works, but that's it.
I've done all the obvious things: I've unplugged all peripherals and network cables. The extended Apple Hardware Test shows no problems. I've repaired disk permissions and done a live verify on the startup drive in Disk Utility. I've reset the PRAM as well, but the behaviour is the same: It doesn't feel like a drive failure as I've managed to back up the startup drive while in safe mode and I don't hear any clicking or worrying drive noises. I don't know how I could wipe the startup drive and reinstall the OS because I can't boot from the install CD - or from a USB drive, as suggested here - http://osxdaily.com/2009/09/02/install-snow-leopard-from-external-firewire-or-us b-hard-drive-or-how-to-upgrade-to-106-without-a-dvd-drive/
Thanks for any help anyone can offer!

  • Arch won't boot, FS not detected, Kernel Panic.

Ok so here is the situation. I have arch linux installed on sda1, which is a sata drive, samsung. Seems lately I been having problems getting arch to boot because it doesn't know what type filesystem my root device has. It goes on and tells me that I can use the kernel parameter rootfstype= to solve the issue, but yet when I try this, it does nothing. I stop getting the error, about unknown FS type, but arch still won't boot. Init fails...
I have tried everything on these forums to fix the problem and not one thing in general has solved the issue. What seems to be most consistent about this problem, is it takes me at least 20 - 30 times of rebooting before it will finally go through and boot. But, even then this is not foolproof. Last night I tried at least 30+ times of rebooting, powering off and still it would not boot.
So after reading the forums some more I found an article somewhat related to my problem and it was suggested that I add my root FS type as a module and then remove the filesystem hook in mkinitcpio.conf. I tried this approach and at the same time downgraded to 2.6.24.2-1 kernel26 so mkinitcpio would generate the new image. Then I rebooted and arch loaded just fine. So then I rebooted and again, unknown fs type on root device error.
So I retraced my steps and tried the same process again, only this time when I rebooted I got same problem. So as it seems, nothing I did to mkinitcpio.conf did anything to alleviate my problem.
As of right now, I managed to get the fallback image to work(but fallback does not load all the time, just this last time I tried it it worked), but I am scared to death to turn off my machine because I know it's not gonna reboot without a lot of hassle.
So can anyone help me diagnose this problem? What can I do to get the kernel to boot and mount the root device with ext3 and pass init on boot up? I am completely lost when it comes to this...

I had a similar issue (I think, can you post the exact error the kernel panics with to check?) and it seemed grub or the kernel had difficulties with finding my root device which was specified as a device node in /dev. The solution for me was to change the root parameter in my kernel line in grub's menu.lst to root=/dev/disk/by-label/<label>, I'm sure UUID and such will work fine too. After doing that I haven't encountered a single such kernel panic. More info about persistent device naming can be found here.

  • Macintosh HD won't boot, but disk utility says "The volume Macintosh HD appears to be OK." How do I repair the hard drive?

I have a MacBook that needs its internal hard drive's Macintosh HD partition repaired, as the boot screen freezes on startup.  I am running a separate, working mac OS from an external hard drive in order to run disk utility and repair the MacBook's internal OS.  The issue is, it has dismounted the internal Macintosh HD partition, and won't remount. And in addition to that, the Verify Disk option returns with, "The volume Macintosh HD appears to be OK." I've run Verify Disk and Repair Disk a few times, all with that same result.  And the internal OS still won't boot.
I have attempted to make a disk image of the internal Macintosh HD partition and save it to my external hard drive so I can wipe the internal hard drive clean and restore the image, but I receive errors when trying to create the disk image, and when trying to erase the hard drive (I know, I should try to erase the hard drive when I haven't made an image. When I tried to erase the hard drive, the image wasn't done and I thought it was. I got an error for erase, and I got an error for making the disk image)  I have tried making a disk image multiple times and haven't been able to create one.
There is also a boot camp partition on the internal hard drive which is of no importance as to whether it stays or is erased.

Reinstall OS X without erasing the drive
    Do the following:
    1. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    2. Reinstall Snow Leopard
If the drive is OK then quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed with reinstalling OS X.  Note that the Snow Leopard installer will not erase your drive or disturb your files.  After installing a fresh copy of OS X the installer will move your Home folder, third-party applications, support items, and network preferences into the newly installed system.
Download and install the Combo Updater for the version you prefer from support.apple.com/downloads/.

  • Intel Xserve won't boot from 3rd party drive in ADM

Right, I've got a Late 2006 Xserve Dual 2.66 with the normal non-RAID SAS/SATA board, which has been running fine for 2 years with a pair of non-Apple Seagate Barracuda ES 250GB drives (Bay 1 & 2), and an original 80GB ADM in Bay 3 as a spare boot disk.
Bay 1 & 2 are set up using SoftRAID and are partitioned into a boot volume (30GB) and a data volume (200GB), both RAID 1 mirrors. The boot volume is cloned nightly to Bay 3 (single volume, set up using Disk Utility). Data is backed up to a utility machine, so this is arrangement lets me handle any single drive failing.
This arrangement has worked fine for 2 years, and allows me to remotely boot off Bay 3 and run DiskWarrior or other disk maintenance software on the normal boot drive without having to drive across town with a firewire drive. I originally started with Mac OS X Server 10.4, but I'm now on Mac OS X Server 10.6.4.
Where things have come unravelled is, I need to upgrade the two 250GBs to something larger. I didn't realise that the Intel Xserve is pretty fussy with ADM sleds and the model of SATA drive they will work with. I didn't have any issues when I set up the Barracuda ES 250GB so wasn't expecting any problems this time.
I bought a pair of Seagate Constellation ES 500GB drives (well 3 actually, one to keep on the shelf as a spare).
I installed them in the sleds and inserted them in the Xserve. The green power LEDs came on but the drives weren't recognised in Disk Utility or System Profiler. I then added the jumper to set them to 1.5Gb/s and then they mounted. I went through my normal process of cloning the OS to them from a standard disk image I have of a known working OS install, ran Disk Utility to repair disk & repair permissions, Disk Warrior to check everything else (my standard paranoid procedures). Set the startup disk to the new install and rebooted. No joy, just the flashing question mark folder. Reboot with the option key, and the new volume doesn't appear in the list of available boot options.
I installed the drives in a firewire enclosure, and it booted without any problems, so it's not a corrupt install, it's something to do with the ADM sleds.
So to go back to basics, I tried initialising a single drive as a single volume and installed 10.6.4 server fresh from the DVD. Same result, no boot when in installed in ADM sled, boots fine in firewire case.
Erased drive, changed formatting to APM (rather then GPT), cloned OS, etc. Won't boot when in ADM sled, boots fine from firewire case. So that screws the theory that drives have to be GPT to boot on Intel hardware.
So I ordered a set of WD RE3 500GB drives (x 3) and repeated this whole process. Same deal, boots fine in firewire, won't boot when installed in ADM. GPT vs APM doesn't make any difference.
Try #3. Ordered desktop variants rather than server class drives. So armed with a pair of WD Caviar Black 500GB. Same deal, boot fine from firewire, will not boot when installed in ADM. Also required jumpers for 1.5GB/s and also the undocumented pins 7&8 (apparently this might be related to the new Advanced Format they are using)
    Try #4
A pair of Seagate Barracuda 7200.12 500GB. This is where it gets tricky. One of the Barracuda will boot the Xserve when installed in an ADM, and one will not. So 2 Barracuda 7200.12, both same model number (ST3500418AS), both same firmware (CC38), yet they behave differently.
    Try #5
    Barracuda ES.2 250GB (x 3). Won't boot in ADM, will boot firewire.
    Try #6
    WD Caviar SE16 250GB (WD2500KS)
Boots in ADM (Yay!!) and firewire
    Try #7
    WD Caviar SE16 500GB x 2 (WD5000AAKS)
    Boots in ADM and firewire
I've managed to get access to G5 Xserve (2.3DP) so I've repeated all this testing on it as well. The G5 doesn't care about the model of drive and boots from any of them using a 10.5.6 install with APM formatted drives.
I've tried all these drives in 4 different models of ADM sled. One thing I have determined is that the model of sled determines if you need to use the 1.5GB/s jumper. I have 2 sleds from G5's, they require the jumper, a 80GB Intel ADM sled with separate data and power plugs requires the jumper, and an Intel 160GB ADM sled with the ribbon cable and combined data/power plug doesn't require the 1.5GB/s jumper. APM vs GPT formatting again makes no difference.
So on the Intel machine, the drives work in the sleds, appear as normal drives on desktop or in Disk Utility when logged in, and also appear as normal drives when connected via SSH if Auto Login is disabled. So to me they appear to be working drives.
It appears to me that something changed at a low level between the Barracuda ES and ES.2 generations of drives (for WD drives as well since the Caviar SE16 that boots is a similar age to the Barracuda ES)
So then why won't it boot from them? Is there some magic dance I've missed?
And how come one of the 7200.12 will boot, while another identical model won't?
Any tips or suggestions greatly appreciated.

I don't have an answer for you, but you deserve thanks for all the useful hardware information you posted from your trial-and-error testing.
My impression has that the XServes need specific kinds of firmware and hardware monitors on their drives in order for everything to function smoothly. My own efforts swapping drives in ADMs has produced "mixed results" to put it mildly. It would be so much easier if we knew what kinds of drives worked properly in what kinds of ADMs and on which Macs/XServes.

  • Quad PPC won't boot--near wit's end

I have a fun little mystery on my hands. At work, we have a Quad-Core PPC (I don't remember which flavor it is, but it's about 2 years old or so now, I believe) which stopped booting up. Here's the skinny: I sat down to the computer (which is barely used anymore, btw, since our graphics guy left last summer) to launch iTunes, and it kept unexpectedly quitting. Launched After Effects 7, unexpectedly quit. So, I figured I'd restart.
After restart, I got the grey screen w/Apple logo & the spinning gear. After maybe 30 seconds, the fans kicked into high gear (though not quite as high as when you go into Single User Mode on this box). That's been the running symptom throughout my repair attempts. Here's what I did to try and recover:
DiskWarrior - wouldn't replace the directory the first two times due to overlapped files. After running FSCK 3 times, DiskWarrior (supposedly) replaced the directory. However, running a 4th time yielded .rsrc & .plist files which could not be repaired (most of which were DVD Studio Pro & After Effects 7 related, but there were three that were users prefs related). I went through the list and deleted the problematic files.
*Repaired permissions from the Install Disk (repaired a few things, then was ok)
*Disk Repair from Install Disk (came out ok)
    *Reset PRAM
    *Reset NV-RAM
*unplugged the computer for 5 minutes to let it sit w/o power
*Installed 10.4.10 (which is the OS it was running) combo update via Target Mode (after doing this, the Quad still came to the same grey screen, except the fans stopped kicking into high gear)
Used "Preferential Treatment" to look at preferences via Target Mode. Nothing found.
    *Re-seated RAM (4x1GB)
*unplugged everything from the Mac except keyboard/mouse & two monitors.
I don't have a usable copy of TechTool (the AppleCare version I have won't boot on this machine for some reason). Safe boot will not work last time I tried (grey screen with hyper fans). Single User Mode still works. Booting from the install disc still works. All RAM is from Apple. Video card is an NVIDIA Quadro (not sure which flavor nor how to tell). This Mac is set to come to the log in screen, so it does not automatically go into a user account upon booting.
Though I'm not completely knowledgeable, I didn't see anything out of the ordinary in the Startup Items folder (while in Target Mode), and if this box came with a Hardware Test Disc, I can't find it.
I've already cloned over the boot drive for safety (incidentally, if you ever have interest in cloning 383GB of data to a disk image, be prepared to wait 3 or 4 hours for that disk image to verify after you've asked it to mount). I went through similar problemswith this Quad last September, though I didn't go through all these steps last time. I ended up doing the Archive and Install, which worked. Didn't know that time either what had gone wrong.
At this point, I'm about ready to zero the drive and start all over, fresh--no restoring from the back up clone. Any recommendations before I go to that step? We do have AppleCare on it, but I really don't want to go there unless it is absolutely the last thing to do (I'd rather try wiping the drive and starting over than send the thing in for "repair"). Right now, I've asked it to boot since re-seating the RAM, so I'm just going to let it spin all night and see what I find in the morning.
Also, if I wanted to try clearing the cache, is it ok to go into the cache folder and just wipe it out completely or are there certain things that must remain? If you'd like me to try clearing the cache manually, please give me the file path so I know I'm going to the right place.

Hi! The directory is corrupt and the only way to resolve it it using Diskwarrior which has already failed or reinstalling. You can try an archive and install and if that fails you'll have to erase and install. DON'T use a clone because cloning an unstable system with problems rarely if ever yields one in better shape. Most likely DW wasn't used regularly and the directory corruption got worse and worse until the boot failure and hence DW inability to resolve the problem. Tom

  • Mac Pro won't boot after forced shutdown

Hi all, hopefully someone will be able to help with this.
This is a Mac Pro (don't have the exact spec right now, but will have later, I think it's a dual), which is used to run ProTools. It has no internet or network connections.
It's running OS X 10.5.8 and has been for quite a while with no problems. Nothing new has been installed recently (hardware or software).
The other night it was playing back a ProTools session and recording a mix of the result when it started behaving strangely. When ProTools is recording, it creates a waveform display of the recording as it goes, and this suddenly started being corrupted by what appeared to be bits of a photograph or video image. The owner tried to hit "Stop", but nothing would work. Mouse still moved, but no button response, keyboard shortcuts ineffective, and Force Quit did nothing, so in the end he had to kill it by holding down the power button.
Since then it won't boot normally, though it will boot into Safe Mode with no problem.
On a "normal" startup, it powers up, goes through the grey screen/Apple logo/spinning thing stage on the left monitor, then that one goes blue, then both monitors go blue for a few seconds and finally both screens go black, with a mouse pointer in the top left of the left screen. You can move the mouse all over both screens (though if you wait a few seconds it leaves a copy of the pointer in the top left), but that's as far as it gets. Disk activity continues for a while (maybe a minute or so) after the screens go to black, and the spinning rainbow thing comes and goes, but it then seems to give up.
Here's what I've tried so far:
Boot into Safe Mode - no problem
Verify disk using Disk Utility - no problem
Repair permissions - loads of screwed up stuff, all with "permission should be ?-----" . Repair didn't work. Finally fixed these by running the 10.5.8 combo updater twice (known issue with this updater), then repairing again. Permissions now come up clean.
Cleared all caches etc. using Cocktail - slight improvement. Before this it was sticking on the one blue screen stage.
Got rid of a few corrupt preference files using Cocktail (all last modified years ago) - no difference.
Reset PRAM and MBC - no difference
Tried booting with everything disconnected except one screen, keyboard and mouse - no difference.
I'm going over later to see if reseating cards/removing memory etc. will make any difference, and to see if it will fire up fom it's original 10.4.? CD.
Beyond that, I'm kind of out of ideas, so I figured I'd see if anyone else had any!
Below is (what I think!) is the relevant bit of the log file, showing a failed boot, forced power off and reboot intoSafe Mode.
Any clues to corrupt files etc. in there?
    Brian

    Hi,
Yes, I did resolve it - it was the graphics card. Changed that, updated OS X and it was done.
I can't now remember exactly which card I used, and I'm away at the moment so I can't get to the infomation, but I do remember that it was a full length card with a large heatsink, and was a bit of a pig to squeeze into the chassis!
Had to buy an adaptor for the second monitor connection, but that didn't cause any hassle. I got the card and cable from the local Apple Store.
It also theoretically needed a later version of OS X than was already there, but since it allowed me to boot off the CD, that didn't matter (and it worked with the old one anyway, as it turned out).
Oh, and also of course, although it's a bog standard PC card, you have to pay way over the odds for it because it has to have different PROMS for a Mac. (Thank you Apple.)  Just part of the price we all have to pay for using Macs.
I seem to remember that there was a certain amount of dancing involved in upgrading the OS afterwards (might have had to do one step twice), but nothing that unusual.
    Hope this helps,
    All the best,
    Brian

  • Satellite A105-S3611 Recovery DVD won't boot - reverts to HDD boot

Satellite A105-S3611 Recovery DVD won't boot - reverts to HDD boot.
My laptop has had a virus but is now clean but has some lingering effects.  So I decided to use the Recovery and Applications/Drivers Media to reinstall the system to factory settings.  Pressing the "C" key at the Toshiba screen did not work to choose the boot divice but pressing F12 did work.  The problem is the system still boots using the hard disk.  I've gone into the boot process and changed the order of boot devices to make sure the CD\DVD drive is chosen first but it does not boot from the CD/DVD.  It looks like it begins to read the DVD but the boot process is not executed from there.
    Questions:
    1. Can I install the system using windows explorer to execute the autorun.ini on the CD/DVD?
    2. Is there another option for getting the system to install from the CD/DVD?
    Thank you in advance
    Roger

I read somewhere on the forum that updating the BIOS may solve the problem.  So I updated the system BIOS from v1.40 to v2.0.  Then I reinserted the newly purchased recovery DVD and the boot process began with the DVD booting but ended with the message "WRONG MACHINE".
I ejected the recovery DVD that I just purchased and inserted the recovery DVD that came with the machine.  This time the machine booted and installed the factory image of the operating system as it should have the first time.
So I am now recovered and the machine works as it did originally.  So the moral of the story is you don't necessarily have to buy the new recovery DVD but just update the system BIOS and then try to use the recovery DVD that came with your machine.

  • Mac Pro 2008 won't boot from install disc - black screen

    Hello,
I recently purchased a new hard drive to replace the original that came with my Mac Pro 2008.  I was able to format the new drive using Disk Utility. I am now at the point where I need to install OS X onto the new drive, but the computer refuses to boot from the disc. The disc is recognized by the computer (I can access the disc and am able to use the BootCamp applications, etc.) but I just get a black screen when trying to boot directly from the disc. The computer boots fine otherwise.
    I have tried the following:
I have tried using both the gray install disc that came with the computer and the Snow Leopard Install DVD disc.
I have tried booting using the "C" key and the "option" key but still receive a black screen following the chime (I've held these down for several minutes).
I have tried restarting from either install disc using the Bootcamp Assistant.
I have tried running the installation software to get it to restart from the disc.
I have tried a combination of the drives, i.e. trying to boot from the discs with just the new drive installed, just the original drive installed, and with both in bay1 and 2.
Everything results in the computer starting up, hearing the chime, and then nothing..just black screen. I have the original drive partitioned with BootCamp with OSX Snow Leopard and Windows 7 installed (I don't know that that matters).
I am at a loss as to what to try next. It doesn't seem like the superdrive because it is recognizing the disc, it just won't boot from it.
Any help is appreciated, thank you.

Clone should be a must  and easy to do and learn (learn by doing! 2)
6800 would 'qualify' as 5x70 series flashed etc and same rule: 10.6.5
In the past there was 10.4.6, 10.5.6, but not 10.6.6 - even though strong need for such a DVD.
    10.6.8 DVD would  be excellent
Lion or ML - buy, download, make an installer flash card would be what I would do at this point.
Then keep both - dual boot as you learn and test and see what ML does and waht you had that required Rosetta to support PowerPC. See www.roaringapps.com about that.
With Carbon Coyp Cloner - was share, now commercial, great utility been around since 10.2.2 at least - this time 2003. 10 yrs.
You can clone the system folders, you can even selectively choose. You can skip copy of most of your home account and do that separately to another drive if  you want.
Clone Windows with Paragon or WinClone and use Windows 7 or 8 DVD to do a system repair (automatic) or to edit the BCD file. It can and should - and all you do is boot Windows 7 DVD w/ only the one drive present and go at it. Piece of cake. But yes, Windows gets fussy if you change or remove or move. BCD to the rescue. A proper program for cloning like Paragon's "Clone OS" meant for going from disk drives to SSDs, knows that and how to do it.
Back to how to clone etc:
    Clone
Disk utility has RESTORE which will also clone your system but not the Lion Recovery partition. Oddly  Apple did not 'endorse' making bootable clone of the system which works too but most choose Carbon Copy Cloner - it works more consistently; it allows for smart update of the backup volume. Both can backup to a sparse disk image if desired.

The DVD is dependent on your hardware. And your hardware changed. The drivers for the 5780 and 6xxx are bundled in the OS and lacking. Minimum build thing.
Put the new drive anywhere you want. Does not matter. Can move it later. Can be drive bay 0-3 or a Firewire external or under the DVD drive.
When you clone pull the old drive and boot from the newly cloned.
After that keep a backup clone around all the time. Takes less than 10 minutes to do a smart update to copy just the changes to keep it current. So you have working copy of the system. I keep Clone "A" that I keep "as was" the system as of last month or whatever (like 10.7.4 before upgrade to 7.5).
Comes easier after doing it once and have all your ducks in a row.

  • G3 won't boot.

I putin a CD. Don't remember which one. And in Startup in Control Panel I said boot the CD. I restarted and now it says
"This startup disk will not work on this Macintosh model. Use the latest Installer to update this disk for this model."
That's fine but when ever I restart it says the same thing. And it won't boot the HD anymore. I downloaded a boot floppy 7.6 sometihng or the other and made it on another older MAC but it won't boot the G3. I made sure it was formatted as MAC and not PC but still no good.
I cleared the PRAM on the G3 and still can't get to the HD. Don't even think target mode works on this old of a machine.
I can get to open firmware prompt but the command boot cd or boot HD still shows the same message.
    What's going on.
    Thanks,
    ivnj

    Hi Kavan
There is no 7.6 boot floppy to download on Apple Site.
You may download a 7.5 Disk Tools floppy via Network Access disk there:
    http://download.info.apple.com/AppleSupport_Area/Apple_Software_Updates/English-NorthAmerican/Macintosh/Utilities/
    Quoted from Jan Hedlund:
"It is also possible to build your own tools disk. A Network Access floppy (here) is needed to begin with. Drive Setup 1.7.3 (here) http://download.info.apple.com/AppleSupport_Area/Apple_Software_Updates/English-North_American/Macintosh/Utilities/D riveSetup/
is a suitable utility in this case. Build the tools floppy like this:
Download the Network Access Disk 7.5 file. Drag the .bin file onto the StuffIt Expander program icon (provided, of course, that you have this application on a Mac); this will decode the .bin (and, usually, decompress the .sea too). Use Disk Copy 4.2 http://download.info.apple.com/AppleSupport_Area/Apple_Software_Updates/English-North_American/Macintosh/Utilities/D iskCopy/
(the Make A Copy button) to create a bootable Network Access floppy.
Download Drive Setup 1.7.3. Decode the .bin file, and mount the disk image. Locate the Drive Setup application inside this self-mounting image (.smi).
Double-click on the Network Access floppy icon. Open the System Folder of this Network Access disk. Move the System suitcase out of the System Folder, to the floppy main level. Move the System Folder to the Trash. Empty the Trash. The System suitcase would at this point be the only file in the Network Access window. Drag-copy the Drive Setup application to the floppy. Rename Drive Setup; call it Finder instead."
You may look for a OS 8.1 Disk Tools Disk(for PowerPC) at:
    http://download.info.apple.com/AppleSupport_Area/Apple_Software_Updates/English-North_American/Macintosh/System/Mac_ OS_8.1Update/
Sorry for that long URL's,hope it's some help for Disk Tools. Should work as a Startup Disk,if you power up pressing C

  • Won't boot, seems disk is gone?

Okay, I was on my iMac and it was running really slow, so reset it (Apple > Reset). It then comes up with a broken folder or whatever, and won't boot. I put in the installation disk, checked the Disk Utility and the only thing there is the Mac OSX Install Disk. I'm assuming that's not a good thing.
I didn't delete any system files (I barely even go anywhere outside of my user files) so I really just don't know what's going on. I can't even get the CD out of the drive now (because clearly that's the only thing it will boot from), so can't try anything else. Any suggestions, or is it pretty safe to say that my Mac is effed? I've only had it 3 months...
Also, if it is screwed, is there ANY possible way that I can salvage anything from it? I have $12k+ music, tens of thousands of images and photoshop stuff dating back 3-4 years. I've got SOME of it backed up onto my MacBook, but the majority is on there.
    Message was edited by: jason_guy13

    Thanks rkaufmann87, I'll try that.
Okay, as soon as I got it working again I backed up some of the stuff that I hadn't already. It then started to run quite slow again, constantly jamming up. I don't know, but could this by ANYTHING to do with a virus? I started to scan but then it just jammed completely, I restarted it and then the same thing, nothing to be able to boot from. I did notice it was very hot on top, moreso than normal. I think I'm going to take it in for them to have a look at anyway (once I get it working again and do a full virus scan, if it'll last that long). I'll leave it for a little while, try turning it back on, try rkaufmann87's suggestion and then try go from there, see what happens.
My thing is, I've only had the thing for 3 months? Is it normal for it to just die that quickly?
I'll keep you guys posted, thanks for all the help so far. Much appreciated.

  • Newbie: how to host 10.4 netinstall images on a 10.5 server

I tried almost everything but I don't get it to work.
    Technical info:
1 server running 10.5, Netboot, NSF (which should do the trick according to the documentation.
1 client running 10.4 clean installation + firefox
    Used tools:
Server admin tools 10.4 and 10.5
    Carbon Copy Cloner
    Disk utility
    Netrestore
    What did I try:
Created an image of an 10.5 leopard (not server) installation dvd with the server admin tools (system image utility) and netinstall runs perfect. (I don't see netrestore but just the installer of 10.5)
Also did this with 10.5 server image and also that worked without any problems.
Created an master image of the 10.4 client (all the above named tools have been tried). Image creation is no problem. creating .nbi folder is no problem. Copy it to the NetBootSP0 folder, still no problem. Tried to boot from the image and there is the problem.
Client boots with Netrestore. I can select the NetBootSP0 folder and the *.nbi folder and the image.
I click on restore and got only this message.

Can someone explain me what is going wrong?
I have to say that this error only shows when i try to boot from the netinstall image i created with the 10.4 system image utility.
The nbi image i created with netrestore helper does boot, shows me the installer, says it is completed but when it is rebooting the OS is still the same as before the installation, very weird.
According to this online document it should work as long as you create it with the right tools (10.4 tools for 10.4 images):
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=306542
But probably I missed a little detail which I also could not find here on the forum an also not on other forum.
Thanks in advance for your time responding to this.

Never mind, I already found the solution myself.
    What I did wrong was:
    - not copying the master image to the nbi folder
    - selecting the netinstall-restore.dmg image as source to copy to my HD.
The thing is, when you create a netinstall image for 10.5, the image itself is already included in the netinstall image so you don't have to do anything else.
With the 10.4 image however, you also have to copy the master image to the NetBootSP0 directory.
In the *.nbi folder contains an netinstall-restore.dmg file. But that is only to boot you to netrestore, it's not the image itself.
Other alternative is to copy the images to another folder that you share with AFP and adjust the configuration of netrestore like described in this manual:
    http://www.shellharbourd.det.nsw.edu.au/pdf/misc/osxrestoringnet.pdf
This manual was also how I figured out that I forgot to copy the image to the NetBootSP0 folder.

  • Powermac G4 (OS 10.4.11) won't boot past grey apple

1- My PowerMac G4 (running OS 10.4.11) won't boot past the grey screen with the apple.  Any suggestions?

I found somewhere else how to hold down the mouse on starting, which opened the tray.  I was able to startup with the disk, holding down the C and get to the Disk Utility window.  Tried repairing the disk, but got this message:
    Fist Aid failed:
Disk Utility stopped verifying "Macintosh HD" because the following error was encountered:
The underlying task reported failure on exit. <OK>
and in the info window it says,
    "Verifying volume "Macintosh HD"
    Checking HFS Plus volume.
Catalog file entry not found for extent
The volume needs to be repaired.
    Volume check failed.
Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit (-9972)
    1 volume checked
    0 HFS volumes verified
    1 volume failed verification
Sounds pretty ominous!  Of course, the recommendation is that I backup everything , but how can I if I can't get to the desktop to back it up?  (It hasn't had a lot of use for sometime, but is available as a film scanning station, and so that I can access scanned images on my iMac.  I doubt that there is a whole lot on the drive that isn't backed up, but I would prefer to back it up for sure!)
    Thank you again.
