Network and DNS Setup Issues

I am setting up an Xserv with Snow Leopard at my school, and I'm running into DNS issues.
I followed the excellent guide at http://labs.hoffmanlabs.com/node/1436 and believe I've set DNS up correctly, but I fail the changeip -checkhostname test (I've replaced my domain and server names):
mserver:~ admin$ sudo changeip -checkhostname
Primary address     = 10.10.10.2
Current HostName    = myserver.mydomain.ns.ca
DNS HostName        = myserver
To fix the hostname please run /usr/sbin/changeip for your system with the
appropriate directory with the following values
   /usr/sbin/changeip 10.10.10.2 10.10.10.2 myserver.mydomain.ns.ca myserver
dirserv:success = "success"
I tried running the command as given, ("sudo /usr/sbin/changeip 10.10.10.2 10.10.10.2 myserver.mydomain.ns.ca myserver") but that didn't solve it. I'm not sure if that's the correct thing to do, or why that didn't work.
I have come to suspect that my issue is with network settings, and would appreciate advice on what I'm trying to do. The server (our only one) will be an OD master, a file server and a web server. It is inside our router, with an externally-reachable IP address and an internal one (the latter is 10.10.10.2). I have configured it with the two IPs on one port to avoid the issue with SL wanting two serial numbers. My System Preference > Network settings are as follows:
Ethernet 1b (highest service order):
IP Address: 10.10.10.2
Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
Router: 10.10.10.1
DNS Server: 127.0.0.1
Search Domains: mydomain.ns.ca
Ethernet 1 (second highest service order):
IP Address: <my external IP>
Subnet mask: 255.255.255.248
Router: <my ISP's router>
DNS Server: 127.0.0.1
Search Domains: mydomain.ns.ca
Ethernet 2:
Not Connected
Although I'm unsure what it means (I'm more a teacher than a techie!), Server Admin > Settings > Network shows:
Computer Name: myserver
Local Hostname: myserver
Network Interfaces:
en0; IPv4; 10.10.10.2; myserver.mydomain.ns.ca
Ethernet 1 (en0); IPv4; <my external IP>; myserver.local
The second of the interfaces above is bold.
The big issue I'm seeing on my network (possibly as a result of this, but everything I've seen says fix DNS first) is that network users can't log in although they have homes and can connect to the homes once logged in as local users.
Many thanks in advance for your help--the school year is closing in quickly!
Regards,
Alex

Thanks. I disabled the external IP & rebooted. Server Admin now has only the one IP. But I still get the same result:
myserver:~ admin$ dscacheutil -flushcache
myserver:~ admin$ sudo changeip -checkhostname
Password:
Primary address     = 10.10.10.2
Current HostName    = myserver.mydomain.ns.ca
DNS HostName        = myserver
To fix the hostname please run /usr/sbin/changeip for your system with the
appropriate directory with the following values
   /usr/sbin/changeip 10.10.10.2 10.10.10.2 myserver.mydomain.ns.ca myserver
dirserv:success = "success"
myserver:~ admin$
I ran dig on a client:

  • Mac mini server networking and DNS setup help

Thanks in advance to anyone who can help me with this. I'm working at a small business where I'm the only guy with any IT experience at all, but I'm new to Macs and OS X (<1 year) and being a server admin so please bear with me.
We just bought a Mac mini server as we are expanding from a bunch of workstations and Google Docs. I've just gone through the installation process, but nothing else is on the server, no user data at all, so if the answer is to reinstall from scratch, I can do it.
We'd like the mini to be a file server, print server as well as the gateway for the internet. I realize we could stick to our router and have the server as another node in the network, but we also got a Time Capsule for backing up the server and will locate it in another room to be another wireless access point there.
When going through Server Assistant, I didn't really know what to name the machine so I used corp-Server.local for the Current Hostname and corpserver.private for the DNS Hostname (though i actually use a 3-letter company acronym instead of "corp").
However, i realized after setup we'd want to access the server externally by name, so I changed the DNS hostname to server.companyname.com in the Zones tab of the DNS section of Server Admin (edited primary zone name, changed Nameservers entry for both primary and reverse zone).
I don't know what else I need to do though because there are loads of instances where corpserver.private still shows up, like in the Open Directory section of Server Admin (which btw always hangs when I open it) and the Contact Info of users (eg. user email is [email protected]). I also had trouble earlier using Server Preferences and Server Admin either not connecting or not recognizing my login, but that seems to have abated.
I guess my problem is, where else do I change the DNS hostname? Or do I have to change the DNS hostname back to corpserver.private (in Server Admin)? That way, I think at least everything will be consistent, but would I be able to still configure it somehow so that externally, we could access the server by the server.companyname.com URL?
Also, can the mini be a wireless router for the office? As mentioned before, we want to cut the existing wireless router out and use the mini instead (and use the Time Capsule as a wireless bridge).

So the ISP<->router connection can have a dynamic IP address, but the router<->server one should be static? I guess that means I have to set the IP address in the router. I hope I can get access to it. I don't suppose it matters which one I set first?
An IP router does not assign addresses.
A DHCP server does assign IP addresses upon receipt of a DHCP request from a client.
Some routers (and many firewall routers) do include a DHCP server.
A box with a static IP address does not need to send a DHCP request; it has a static address.
You'll need to ensure that the IP address pool within the DHCP server does not overlap the addresses that are manually assigned to your local hosts; the static IP addresses on your LAN.
[Here is an overview of the pieces involved here, and some of the typical terminology|http://labs.hoffmanlabs.com/node/275].
I hate to belabour the point, but I just want to clarify: in my setup where ISP<->router<->server<->clients, where the server is the only machine connected to the router, which one should be the local DNS server? The server, right? So if the DNS server is turned on in the router, I should turn it off? Or do I need both (ie. router for its LAN (to server), and server for its LAN (to clients))?
So to confirm, the configuration includes (probably) a modem, a router (firewall) and a router (Mac), and then the rest of the (local) show? That is not the simplest configuration, and it's Particularly given that Mac boxes make expensive and slow routers.
The usual configuration is ISP>firewall>LAN and the LAN is usually built from WiFi, wired connections and switches. Within one subnet (which is typical) any host inside your firewall is connected on the LAN, and can communicate (directly) with any other LAN client. The firewall is configured as the gateway; that's the default route for outbound connections.
One more thing that's bugging me: I still don't understand why I couldn't connect to the internet when I plugged in the Ethernet cable from server to router. Even if I was using DHCP to get a dynamically allocated IP, shouldn't it still have worked? I'm worried that I'm going to set up everything as it should be but the connection still won't work.
That's likely because you're trying to use the Mac as a router, and that takes specific configuration steps. It's easier to have ISP>firewall>LAN, and have the Mac OS X Server box and the rest of the stuff as peers on your LAN. If you really want to use the Mac as an IP router, look around for setting up static routes on Mac; there are postings around for that.
If your data is more valuable and your security preferences and requirements are higher, then you may want a firewall with a DMZ, and put your web-facing boxes over in the DMZ. If you're serving stuff to the web or a mail server or such, it's possible to get breached, and a breach means folks can potentially get further into your LAN. With a DMZ, they're somewhat more isolated from your LAN.

  • Networking and DNS issues

I am trying to get my domain set up and I am running on two routers. The first router is set up on a 10.0.0.1 network, and my network is on a 192.168.1.1 network. I am able to get out to my ISP via port forwarding, but I am not able to set up a DNS. The
wizard runs me through the forward lookup zones and my servers IP address in validated, but then it says that the DNS could not be created. Also, my product ID is not able to be activated because the activation server reported that the product key has exceeded
its unlock limit. How do I fix this?

Make sure local DNS server has a static address and own address as primary and 127.0.0.1 as secondary (assuming only one DNS server) in network connection properties and is not multi-homed. Also put public DNS addresses as
forwarders only on local DNS server. Client should have local DNS address
ONLY so client can find and logon to domain.
Posting an unedited ipconfig /all may also help.
Start, click Run, type SLUI 04, and then click
    OK for phone activation.

  • Officejet Pro 8610 - Can't connect to wireless network (and has similar issue with previous printer)

When I returned from a trip, I was unable to connect to my trusty HP All-in-one 7510 that I had on my network for three years.  I tried troubleshooting it, reinstalling the software on numerous computers, and fixing the printer, but alas the printer said that it was connected to the network, and none of my computers wanted to find it anymore.
Then I bought my new Officejet Pro 8610 this week, set it up...and I am experiencing the same issue.  I tried using the link and support took from this post - http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Printer-All-in-One-Install-Setup/Officejet-Pro-8610-Can-t-connect-to-wi... but the printer was unable to be found on the network.

  • How to attach agent with unusual AD and DNS setup?

I am trying to configure DPM for a client, which is a university department. They have a somewhat unusual setup of their AD and DNS and I think that is why I am having trouble attaching an agent I have installed.
It is a new installation of DPM 2012 R2 version 4.2.1292.0 with a local SQL Server 2012 SP2. The OS is Windows Server 2012 R2. It is going to protect a bunch of SQL Server databases all on the same Windows Server 2012 R2 server. The SQL Server is a physical
server and the DPM server is a hyper-v VM, running on a Windows Server 2012 R2 host.
The install of DPM itself went smoothly.
To install the agent on the SQL Server machine, I followed the instructions here:
https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh758186.aspx#BKMK_Manual. This was successful (I think)
Then I proceeded with these instructions to attach the agent:
    https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh757916.aspx
This fails at the enter credentials stage with this message:
DPM could not connect to the service control manager on these servers: [SqlMachinename].win.[universityname].dk (ID: 33221)
As far as I can tell, the problem has to do with how the university manages windows AD domains and DNS lookup.
The university uses one common AD domain named win.[universityname].dk for the entire campus, but it looks like DNS names for individual windows machines is managed locally at individual departments.
Ipconfig says this (abbreviated) for the SQL Server where I installed the agent:
    Host Name . . . . . . . . . . . . : [SqlMachinename]
    Primary Dns Suffix  . . . . . . . : win.[universityname].dk
    DNS Suffix Search List. . . . . . : win.[universityname].dk
    [departmentname].[universityname].dk
    Ethernet adapter T2:
       Connection-specific DNS Suffix  . : [departmentname].[universityname].dk
       DHCP Enabled. . . . . . . . . . . : Yes
This works from the DPM machine and shows the correct IP:
    ping [SqlMachinename]
This works from the DPM machine and shows the correct IP:
    ping [SqlMachinename].[departmentname].[universityname].dk
This fails from the DPM machine ("could not find host") and does not get an IP:
    ping [SqlMachinename].win.[universityname].dk
I've used Message Analyzer to verify that when pinging just [SqlMachinename], in fact DNS tries first to append win.[universityname].dk, which fails and second [departmentname].[universityname].dk, which then succeeds. This is by the book, as I understand
it because of the DNS Suffix Search list or because of the connections-specific DNS Suffix.
The problem is that DPM only tries [SqlMachinename].win.[universityname].dk. I have verified this with Message Analyzer.
I am not sure how to proceed. Is there another way to attach the agent? Maybe by IP-address?
I cannot ask the client to put [SqlMachinename].win.[universityname].dk in their DNS database. I am sure that they do not register any individual machines in that DNS domain which cuts across the entire campus. I am equally sure that they will not consider
creating individual AD domains for each department just because I ask (although that would probably be best in the long run).
Any suggestions would be very much appreciated.

    Found a workaround:
I can install and attach the agent using one of the methods designed for agents in workgroups or untrusted domains. For me NTLM worked fine as long as I used simple nertbios computer names without any domain suffixes.
    This is what worked:
    On protected server:
SetDpmServer.exe -dpmServerName DPMServername -isNonDomainServer -userName DpmNtlmAccount
    On DPM Server:
Attach-NonDomainServer.ps1 -DPMServername DpmServername -PSName servername -Username DpmNtlmAccount -Password xxxxx
I still think it is weird that DPM insist that protected servers in thewe same AD domain must use the AD domain name in their DNS name. Very inflexible.

  • Bluetooth Network and Internet sharing issue

I'm trying to set up a network through Bluetooth between two computers having the latest Toshiba Stack installed, and to share the Internet connection with the second computer.
On the firs computer I've set the Internet Connection Sharing, and because of this it automatically sets the TCP/IP adresses for the Bluetooth Personal Area network (192.168.0.1).
On the 2nd computer, i've set everything to obtain it automatically. Firewalls (Kaspersky) disabled.
When I connect the 2 Bluetooth devices, everything looks fine, the 2nd automatically obtains the IP adress, I can ping both computers, and the Internet also works on the 2nd computer, for a few seconds! After that, it appears like the 2nd computer is disconnected from the network... what could be the problem?
In the event viewer under the System tab, I've found Informations like these:
    2nd comp:
The system detected that network adapter \DEVICE\TCPIP_{E44D18EB-91F5-4... was connected to the network, and has initiated normal operation over the network adapter.
The browser has forced an election on network \Device\NetBT_Tcpip_{E44D18EB-... because a master browser was stopped.
and at 1st comp also appeares this:
The system detected that network adapter Bluetooth...Area Network - Packet Scheduler Miniport was disconnected from the network, and the adapter's network configuration has been released. If the network adapter was not disconnected, this may indicate that it has malfunctioned. Please contact your vendor for updated drivers.

  • Can't access "Network" and other performance issues

    Hi all,
I'm facing a catch-22 and am not sure what to do to get myself and my mac out of this downward spiral. Any help you can offer would be greatly appreciated (fyi I am admittedly not great with macs and probably don't maintain my MacBook Pro well enough).
I've had a serious slowdown in performance starting a couple weeks ago. the system moves at a glacial pace and most of the time is spent watching the spinning rainbow.
To add to my issues, my ISP recently performed a system upgrade which requires me to change some settings under "Network" in my system preferences. Well, when I try to access "Network", the machine thinks for a while, then an error message appears telling me that the network preferences has shut down unexpectedly. When I hit "retry" the error message eventually reappears.
So, because of the upgrade, I can't access the internet to download any repairs for the machine, and because of the problems with the machine, I can't modify the preferences to access the internet. Obviously a vicious cycle which someone of my expertise level is struggling to solve.
    Side notes
    - I've passed the 90-day phone support period so can't call for help.
    - I'm on my work computer now. Could I download some repair/diagnostic tool here, then run it on my machine at home?
If anyone can throw me a lifeline I would be grateful!
    MacBook Pro 15"   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

    OZ 99,
For logic's sake, I'm gong to take these out of order a bit:
    2) A "disk error" occurs when the "file system" (sometimes called the "disk directory") becomes damaged. This is data that is written to the HD, so yes, it could be considered a software error. Your file system is, basically, a map of your physical HD, and it indexes the location on the drive of all the other files. When it is damaged for whatever reason, your disk "forgets" where some amount of data lives. Because of this, the associated files become damaged, or "corrupt." If those files happen to be critical components of the OS, bad things can happen. At worst, the disk will become unmountable, and all of your files unrecoverable.
    1) Disk errors can be caused by several things. Sometimes, one or more "blocks" (let's call them physical locations on the disk) on your HD can become physically damaged. Whether this is because of a slight flaw in manufacturing, a scratch, magnetic particles that lose their "oomph," whatever, matters not. What is important is that some data is lost. Because the file system still believes there is data living in this location, it (the file system) is no longer reliable; it is damaged. While the initial loss of data could be considered hardware-related, the disk error is not. I'll come back to this.
Another potential cause is some random error in the process of writing data to the disk. Again, this is a software problem, not a hardware problem. The most common cause for this occurs when your computer is shut down improperly, either a forced shutdown or a power loss. Journaling, which is the default for an OS X boot volume, goes a long way toward automatically fixing these types of disk errors, but it is not always a guarantee.
If you have had your MBP for only a short period of time, it is not surprising that a disk error has occurred, and probably because of a bad block. Absolutely flawless drives are rare, and many computers ship with incipient disk errors. For this reason, many people like to format any new drive, even one in a new computer, right out of the box (I'll get to reasons why this is a good thing to do).
    3) Yes. Disk Utility can check or repair your file system. Any repairs must be made using Disk Utility while booted to the OS X install disk. Your HD can be "verified," however, while booted to the HD. Simply open Disk Utilty (in the "Utilities" folder), select your startup disk, then click "Verify" in the "First Aid" pane.
    4) Yes, you will have to reinstall all of your applications after formatting and reinstalling. Formatting erases everything on the volume or drive selected. Settings and data for all of those applications can be saved, however, then transferred back to the MBP after reinstalling OS X. Once the applications, themselves, have been reinstalled, you will be right back where you started. I can talk about making a comprehensive backup in another post, if you like.
DISK UTILITY: In my first post, I recommended that you select your entire drive, then using the "Zero All Data" option. This process takes a considerably longer amount of time (as much as an hour and a half, depending on the size of your drive), but it has one big advantage. When this option is used on an entire physical drive (also called a "device"), it will scan for those pesky bad blocks, and "map out" any it finds. Since these bad spots on the disk will not be included in the new file system's list of "useable" locations, your chances of encountering another disk error in the near future is drastically reduced. So, even though a bad block could be considered a hardware error, management of them is handled by software.

  • Static IP address setting ... or mabye a DNS setup issue

Not exactly new to Linux, but hyped on caffeine and much Java EE and Ant and Maven and WebLogicServer and other things buzzing in my head
So ... I have a DynDNS name ... I set my router to make Linux 192.168.1.110 always based on MAC ...
Installed Oracle Linux 6 rev 2 from downloaded ISOs.
Left the "ifcfg-eth0" and "network" alone, and "ifconfig" shows the router setting for IP-address pushed through just fine.
But "ping http://www.yahoo.com" fails because it is an "unknown host". Ping to another local-system works find as does ping to gateway.
I do recall setting the DNS (primary and secondary) during install, but the etherplug was out during install so I has to change ONBOOT from no to yes.
What do I need to do to make the router's DNS available to the Linux, or how do I manually add those DNS values using command line? ULN will need this, at least.

Ah ... the Perils of Pauline (or of phoenix, as the case may be)
Indeed, the resolv.conf was missing entries, but my attempts to re-add them took more than 1 hour and I have NO time to learn system management on that level right now (Ant, Maven, Subversion, git, EJB, ...) ... just 1 or two other things I need to focus on.
I downloaded 5.7 64-bit, installed it with the etherplug in, and all is happy (or will be after I register a ULN account).
Thanks for answering, but right now I need any functioning OracleLinux with patches available to be a SOA/database server much more than I need to learn how to fix "resolv.conf".
... and the caissons go rolling along ...

  • Netctl and DNS client issues

AFAIK there is nothing wrong in placing both 'domain' and 'nssearch' in '/etc/resolv.conf'. I'm afraid that netctl ignores 'DNSSearch' entry if 'DNSDomain' is present. Is it a bug or a 'feature'?
My experience shows that netctl incorrectly handles the 'DNS' entry: if it contains '127.0.0.1' all other nameservers are ignored (not placed in '/etc/resolv.conf'. It is a problem if a server is running a secondary DNS which is frequently down for upgrade/maintenance/testing.
(OK, found this issue discussed, bug-reported and "fixed")

  • Huge Network and Voice quality issues with Xperia T2 Ultra Dual

Same problem here after one month.
Voice cracking can't hear other party while having full signal strength.

Hi @Mayur9 Go to Call settings -> General -> and disable the "Slow talk option" if it is enabled. If the issue persists, boot your device in Safe mode to check what happens: http://talk.sonymobile.com/t5/FAQ/How-to-boot-your-phone-into-safe-mode/m-p/348008#U348008 Also I suggest you to first run a backup of the device information like this: http://talk.sonymobile.com/t5/FAQ/Backup-amp-Transfer/m-p/407253#U407253 Try performing a system repair using PC Companion: http://support.sonymobile.com/gb/tools/pc-companion/ This will factory reset your phone and erase all data. You might need tocharge your device for about 1-2 hours before so the device has at least 80% battery. Make sure the device is not connected to computer or laptop and turned off (sometimes you have to press power button and volume up until the device vibrates 3 times or on some devices you have to press the small button near the SIM tray or on the back of the device). Start PC Companion and select Support zone then Update my phone/tablet then in Blue Repair my phone/tablet and follow the on screen instructions - When prompted connect your phone still switched off holding volume down or back button - This should start the repair or reformat process. If you are using Windows 8/8.1 or a 64bit operating system then adjust the settings for PC Companion and run in compatibility mode and chose Windows 7 or XP. I hope can be useful. I'm at disposal for any question. Best Regards,

  • Networking and Server setup

I wasn't sure what the best area was to post this so I thought I would put it here:
Currently we are running a Video Production company and photography business from one studio. We have 3 macs in a row. One is used for Video, the other two for photography. The video production is edited in Final Cut and we also do other compositing. The photography is heavily reliant on using Aperture to store all images, and then photoshop for post work.
My question is: we are currently just working of hard drives connected to the computers. What we want is a server that allows us to all access the same files and documents from a central area that stores all the data. We would like separate locations for video and photography and for this to be accessible quickly, especially considering the video we shoot is HD so transfer rate is important. We also want to know that at the end of the day, all the work that has been done that day is backed up, in case something goes wrong.
Can anyway give us some detailed info on what the best set up is for us in this situation?
    Thanks

You may have better luck posting in the XServe forum located here.
As far as backups go, unless you back up to an external drive, remove it from site and store it securely in a different geographic location, you are prone to lose all of your data to flood, theft, or other natural disaster.

  • Snow Leopard Server DNS setup

Where is there a step by step setup for making my Snow Leopard Server with DNS? Essentially, I am looking to setup a mail server but seem to be missing what information I need to gather from the folks that host my domain and how to point traffic to my network.

When I started setting up my first Mac OS X Servers a few years ago I had to completely retrain my brain because the MacOS does not follow the traditional nomenclature of Windows Active Directory and DNS setup. That being said like AD for Windows MacOS relies very very heavily on a healthy and properly running DNS system, both internally and externally. So one great resource I found was about 10+ hours of training on Leopard Server over to Lynda.com. I think you can sign up for a month long membership but it's well worth the investment if your looking for some basics thru advanced setup of Leopard Server. Now SLS is much much easier at the setup and deployment and some of the fundamentals of the setup interface have changed greatly (as an improvement) but the videos are still very applicable.
Basically it comes down to the following steps in order to get your website/e-mail/wiki services working.
    1. Purchase your .whatever with a registrar, godaddy, doster, network solutions ect...
    2. Make sure you have a fully routable PUBLIC IP address from your ISP that you can assign to the WAN (internet side of your router)
    3. Contact your ISP and ask then to create an rDNS entry for your .something to the IP address they assigned you. Usually this will look like xxx.xxx.xxx ---> mail.mydomain.com when you test later on.
    4. Modify the DNS records with your registrar to point the MX & A record to your new IP. You will log in create an A record for mail.mydomain.com ---> xxx.xxx.xxx (your public IP on router) and then you will create an MX record for e-mail which will simply be mail.mydomain.com with a value of 10 (there is usually a screen for this).
    5. Once all the DNS is setup and working properly (Can take several days for these changes to take affect and be visible by your ISP) then you can begin the configuration of your router. You will need to determine what IP internally you want your Mac to be. Usually 10.0.0.1 or 192.168.1.1 or other and document that. Program your router to port forward ports 25,110, 80, 143 to the IP that you decided your Mac will be at so those services will be publicly available to you to user. Otherwise nobody will ever be able to send you e-mail or visit your site.
    6. This is a good time to check your work and settings by visiting www.mxtoolbox.com and you verify your rDNS (setup by ISP) and your DNS (Setup by you) before beginning your setup of OS X SLS. If everything checks out then start the install if not STOP HERE and fix it because it will haunt you in the long run.
    7. Start the install of SLS and at some point the system will get you to the screens at which you input your domain information. If all was setup properly up to now SLS will auto-populate the domain and local hostname of your Mac Server. U can change the local hostname if you wish but the domain name information should reflect your rDNS and A record information of mail.mydomain.com and you can hit next and proceed with the rest of the install.
    8. Once up and running you will need to make a small adjustment to the alias of your e-mail. For some reason the engineers at Apple left a flaw in (my opinion) that is as such. Whenever you send e-mail it will go as [email protected] instead of what you really want which is [email protected]. So follow this post below and you will be all fixed up in a jiffy.

  • DNS Server Issues with Comcast and Airport Extreme wifi routers

I am having significant challenges with 3 Airport Extreme (latest gen) wifi routers and my Comcast Xfinitity service.  It once worked just fine, but now I continually get the blinking amber lights stating "No DNS servers" for each of the Airport Extreme (AE) routers.  My configuration is:
Coax cable -> Comcast Xfinity cable modem -> ethernet to 16-port gigabit ethernet switch ->->-> ethernet to 3 Airport Extremes around the house direct connected with switch
I have many wifi devices throughout the house (iPads, MacBooks, home automation devices) as well as direct-connected devices via ethernet (one PC connected to AE router).
Each Airport Extreme router is set with these settings in the Airport Utility app:
    Internet tab=  Connect using: DHCP
Wireless tab=  Network mode: Create a wireless network
Network tab=   Router mode: Off (Bridge Mode)
I have attempted to put the Xfinity cable modem in bridge mode, and use the Airport Extreme to serve up the IP addresses, but still lost internet connectivity.
I have also attempted to set the Network tab=> Router Mode to "DHCP and NAT" but get "Double NAT" error issues as well.
I have tried using the Comcast DNS server addresses (75.75.75.75;75.75.76.76) setting on the Internet tab for the routers and do end up getting a green light, but NO internet connectivity.
Lastly, I have tried using the Google DNS servers (8.8.8.8;8.8.4.4) setting on the Internet tab the routers giving me the No DNS servers amber light error and again, no Internet connectivity for either wifi-connected or even ethernet connected (directly to Airport Extreme router) devices (like my PC) despite getting a green light on the router.
Any this point, it really seems that these AE routers are NOT compatible with the Xfinity cable modem or service… (and yes, I've tried power-cycling and restarting the modem, and then the AE routers, MANY times to little avail).
Should I move one of these Airport Extreme wifi routers to before the switch, and have the other 2 in Bridge mode after the switch?  Do I need to setup a specific range of DHCP reservation addresses for each different AE router?
Appreciate any insight anyone can share with this aggravating DNS server issue between Comcast & multiple Airport Extreme wifi routers.

I do not see anything wrong with your basic setup.. the issue is indeed the WAN ports of the AE.. AC version are having problems with some network equipment.
You have listed a stack of things you have tried.. but I want you to move the ethernet patch cable you use on each AE to its LAN port instead of WAN.
Restart the airport when you do that.. and then see if it becomes stable.
In bridge mode the airport moves the WAN port to LAN.. but the WAN port setup itself seems more problematic than the LAN ports.
There are other methods we can try if this does not work.. but in the end.. I would be tempted to take the whole lot back to apple.. they need to start making equipment that works with standard modems and switches.
BTW what brand is the 16 port switch?? Does it happen to be managed (smart type)?

  • DNS for internal network and Firewall ports?

    Hello,
I don't know were to begin, so I guess I'll start with my setup.
I have Mac OS X server 10.5.7 running DNS, Firewall, Mail, iChat, RADIUS, VPN, SMB. Behind an Airport Base Station in DMZ.
My DSN setup is just for the server and local clients. I'm also setup to forward my ISP DNS.
My question is do I need to open any ports in the firewall. I currently have my local subnet 172.16.4.x to allow all. The "Any" subnet to allow DNS outbound. Is this correct or am I creating a security risk?
I dont want the public to be able to use my DNS server. (I would like to ONLY allow my local network, and VPN users.)
    Thanks!

I always recommend going with a hardware device (including the base station) over IPFW when running a server.
The main reason is that when you're running behind a NAT device (such as the AirPort Base Station), ALL incoming traffic is blocked unless you specifically enabled it via port forwarding. A positive security model.
In contrast, Mac OS X Server will open firewall ports based on the services you're running, without regard to whether that service should be publicly accessible or not.
You then have to go through the motions of securing each service to either block external traffic at the service level (e.g. by telling the application what addresses it can listen to), or at the network level (by configuring the firewall to block external access). This is a bad security model since each service is public by default and you have to go out of your way to secure it.
Also bear in mind that you might not think this is a problem today since you can just configure IPFW and be done, but what about next week? or next month? or next year when you add another service. Will you remember to reconfigure the firewall to secure it then?
