  • Questions about networking a desktop app

So the background first: I'm working on a hobby program, and wanted to try my hand at networking it. It's a desktop app (a simple game) that two or more users can play at the same time. There's no centralized server to connect to, it will be an ad hoc connection. One user hosts a game (starts a server) and then others join the game (start their clients). I've done a lot of research, but still have some unanswered questions. I plan on using ssl encrypted socket connections. I used this tutorial to learn about trust managers and such.
    My questions are:
    1) What's the best way to give the users the info they need to connect to each other? I haven't looked into it yet, but I'm assuming it's not to hard to display the server's ip address, which they can give to the clients to connect to the server. PC games used to do this years ago before companies began hosting matchmaking services. Is there more required than that?
    2) What's the best way to pick a port number that all user's have access to? I know I need to pick a port that isn't registered by another app, and that the port number will need to be given to the clients along with the server's ip. If the server is able to open that port, is there a situation where clients wouldn't be able to access that port?
    3) Since this is basically a toy, I don't want to to the trouble of something like Verisign for security. Will a self-signed certificate authority be adequate? My concerns are not opening user's computers to attack, and protecting the data in transit. I know ssl will protect the data, but I'm not knowledgable with security to be sure if a shared trust manager will be enough to only let the app access the connection. What are the risks of someone bypassing the security and gaining access to our systems?
I've never written an application that had to deal with network security, so please pardon my paranoia, and thanks very much for any help.

If you are getting the week or intermittent wireless connection then, try the following settings on the router...Under the Wireless tab,Change the Channel Width to 20MHz and Channel to 11..Provide unique SSID.Under the Advanced Wireless Settings..Change the Beacon Interval to 50,Change the Fragmentation Threshold to 2304,Change the RTS Threshold to 2304 and Click on Save Settings...Power Cycle the network and check the connection.
WPA2 is very secured Secured type,so it is advisable to use it.However,it is not necessary to use WPA2.
If you are using "N"Router then,to get the full advantage of N Speed, you should "N" Adapter.
If you want to set the static DNS on the computer or any other wireless device then, you can set any DNS numbers.
To repeat the wireless signal of the N Router,I would suggest you to go for an Access Point like WAP610N.

    Hey there,
During startup of my MacBook Pro, Captive Network Assistant checks 249 different airport, hotel and other misc. WiFi hotspots. Proabaly adding a good 3 minutes to my startup time. ***? This all started while I was on extended layover at Amsterdam Schiphol Airport.
I thought Captive Network Assistant was an iOS thing. No iOS devices in my home or office. Here's a portion of the console log during startup.

Looking at the times, I see this only takes a fraction of a second but my startup time is still much much longer than it ever was or should.
Does anyone have any idea on how to get rid of this? I deleted the Captive Network Assistant.app from my computer but the checking continues. It seems to be a rarely mentioned issue doing a web search, and nothing like this, although  it's referred to in certain articles.
    Really weird.
    Gregg

I'd take another look at your startup log.
If you look closely, you'll see that all those log messages occurred in the space of 30 milliseconds - by comparison, a human blink takes about 150 milliseconds.
So while I don't doubt you're seeing slow startup time, I don't think CaptiveNetworkSupport is the culprit, per se.
Fortunately, since every startup event is timestamped, it should be easy enough to determine what task is taking the most time.
As for CNS, it's not just an iOS thing - it's standard in Mac OS X, too. I'm also under the impression (but can't confirm) that it only checks the networks that you've previously connected to, so check System Preferences -> Network -> AirPort -> Advanced -> WiFi and delete any networks you no longer use or expect to connect to.

  • Admin network channel setup

I have some multihome machines running managed servers and want to partition the
admin traffic on each machine to a specific interface. I have set up an admin
network channel but how to I tell the Admin server to now use this interface instead
of the domain wide administration port?

  • Failed to initialize the network. Check if another instance of agent is

Out of the blue a small number of my Windows XP PCs get the following error
when logging in. Usually appears while login script page is on screen:-
Failed to initialize the network. Check if another instance of agent is
    running. Contact the system administrator
Once XP has loaded ok I can manually start the Remote Management service.
Some PCs are intermittent and don't seem to get it again but a couple get it
every login. I removed the client and reinstalled. I removed the Remote
Management service and re-installed. Re-registered the PC Workstation but no
change for those who get it every day.
    I did find this:-
Failed to initialize the network. Check if another instance of agent is
    running. Contact the system administrator
    Source: Remote Management Agent
    Severity: Critical
Possible Cause: The Remote Management Agent is unable to bind to the IPX or
IP port that is being used for Remote Management service, or the ports are
being used by some other application running on the managed workstation.
Action: Uninstall any third-party remote control agent or remote control
application using these ports from the managed workstation.
Possible Cause: The protocol stack is corrupted.
    Action: Reinstall the protocol stack.
Possible Cause: The managed workstation is not connected to the network, or
    the network is down.
Action: Connect the managed workstation to the network.
I don't have any third party remote control agent installed and I've tried
the refresh of the IP protocol stack. Surprised this has started as we have
not made any changes to the network or software. We run NW Client 4.83sp1
    and NW5.1 sp5.
Anybody else had this and cleared it completely?

    Further developments:
It looks like it's a fault in the nic. it's a Compaq NC3120 Fast Ethernet
card. It used to work, but since I've wiped out the card drivers that were
in use, I'm at HP's mercy. They are telling me that the card is no longer
under warranty and won't even tell me what driver to look for. Anything I've
managed to find has the exact same symptoms:
Client works, ping to IP addresses work, ping to www.yahoo.com (etc) doesn't
work, although winipcfg shows a DNS server the same as every other machine I
    have.
Internet explorer doesn't work, even with IP addresses to local servers.
    And of course, zenrc32 doesn't work, wsreg32 doesn't work.
Does anyone know of a way of making the NC3120 work on a win98 machine?
Shall I just go buy a couple dozen netcards from a more reputable company
    than compaq?

  • Where can I find my favorite radio channel on app store?

    Allo,
Where can i find my favorite radio channel on app store?

Not all radio stations offer their own apps - in fact relatively few do - so if a simple seach for the station name doesn't turn up an app, contact the station you wish to listen to and ask if they offer an Internet stream at all and if so if there's is any app(s) that can play that stream.
    Regards.

  • Is there a system check app for 2nd generation iPod touch

I have an 8 GB iPod touch which I guess is just gneration 2 and not 3.  Is there a system check app that will work on this iPod?  Also how do apps shut down on this Ipod.  On my newer 4th gen iPod you have to make them wiggle and then click the red "X".

You have a 2G iPod. Apple only made 32 and 64 GB 3G iPods.
I know on no system check app
As you found out, the 2G/iOS 4.2.1 and earlier do not support  multitasking and then do not have the recently used app show up when you double click the Home button.
To shut down a n app just click the Home button to get to your Home screen

    Hello
I have found very interesting Microsoft article about that. You can check it on this page http://support.microsoft.com/kb/222973/en-us
Other way you can contact service partner in your country. They can explain you what the problem can be.

  • "Failed to install network adapter - check WINBOM"

    Hello,
two weeks ago my network adapter and my soundcard ran away. I brought the laptop to an IBM premium partner, where the mainboard was changed with a notice all would be ok, but with a hint of the service technican that I should try to recover; the problem is still not solved.  Yesterday I recovered from a very old version, when the network adapter and sound card worked properly. Since then my sound card works, but only with cracks. That is of course not acceptable. The network card does not work anyway.
When I boot my laptop with the ACCESS IBM button I get an error message from FACTORY.EXE "Failed to install network adapter -- check WINBOM"
I checked them, but there is no factory.exe on my hdd, as well as there is no winbom.ini on my hdd. I only found the and empty entry winbom in the registry.
In the system manager there is no network adapter listed (instead of the wireless ones). No way to install one.
I do not know what to do now. May someone think there is a solution available for my thinkpad or should I sent it to IBM/Lenovo?
    The machine is a T43p 2668 PEG.
    Cheers,
    Herwig
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    Welcome to the forum!
I'm surprised that the Business Partner hasn't offered to re-install the OS for you, but then again it may be a local practice that I wouldn't be familiar with.
Try borrowing/downloading a copy of a "live" Linux CD (Mint works out of the box on any T43/p with ATi) and see whether the issues persist there.
If they do, hardware is defective and you'll need to send it back in for another repair.
If they don't, re-installing XP from scratch, after saving the important stuff on media, is the way to go IMHO.
Good luck and let us know.

  • WLST script to create network channel

    Hi,
I was not able to find a sample WLST script to configure network channels on the Weblogic server. Could somebody provide pointers?
    Himadri

    Hello,
hopefully you have already got answer to your question from some other source, but here's any way how I update DbAdapter configuration.
I generate deployment plan for DbAdapter in development time by admin console like you have done.
Copy the deployment plan to production environment, then use wlst or weblogic.Deployer to update adapter:
    source <domain location>/bin/setDomainEnv.sh
    java weblogic.Deployer -adminurl t3://<admin-url>:<admin server port> -user <admin user> -password <password> -update -name DbAdapter -plan <db plan location>/DBPlan.xml
This way I can do my production environment deployment script based, no need to use GUI.
It's also possible to use wlst instead of weblogic.Deployer, but haven't tried that yet.
    Hope this was helpful.

  • Software for checking wireless networks' channel?

Occasionally, another neighbor gets a wireless router. I can now see 6 in some parts of the house. Connection speeds between one AirPorted Mac and another non-AirPorted Mac started getting slow. Changing the channel on my AirPort Extreme and AirPort Express seems to have fixed it. What I'd like to know is that channel everybody is using around here, so we can all avoid collisions. Is there any software that can list all the wireless networks and their channels?

    Hi Steven:
There are a couple of Widgets that will tell you the available networks, speed and connection channel. One is: http://www.apple.com/downloads/dashboard/networking_security/airtrafficcontrol.h tml
Give that a try and let us know how it works!

  • No network message on app, when you can still browse net. Happens randomly. Is this specific to any iOS???

Can anyone please let me know if this issue is observed with the other iOS apps.
Issue: Even when WiFi of 3G is turned on and can browse internet, the network is not recognised in the app. This happens very randomly on only some of the iOS devices.
Is this any refresh issue with the iOS which cannot trigger the network flag for the apps?
Did a lot of investigation and happens very randomly. Once you restart the phone and reconnect to the network, the app starts working fine.
Any inputs or suggestions would be appriciated.
    Thanks!

    Hi Jon
I use Toshiba laptops several years now and I was never faced with such problem, especially if notebook is preinstalled with original recovery image. Recovery image contains tested drivers and they should work. I have noticed that Windows update offers for some models WLAN driver as optional update. I hope you didnt install it.
Googling around you can find numerous links and forums discussions about such issue. You can check what other people write about it but if you cannot fix it with driver reinstallation I presume there must be some problem with registry entries. It is pretty complicated to clean it up especially for someone who doesnt have enough experience with this.
In my opinion you should back-up all your data and reinstall recovery image. Start to use notebook with clean preinstalled OS and make from time to time restore point.
I know it is the last option but easiest and most effective.

  • PING Process :: Checking App System availability from SAP R/3

    Hi
Our requirement is to check Whether Application System is UP or DOWN before sending the data from SAP Server like Pinging the  application system from SAP System.
We are using the Web Service as Target Application System & SAP R/3 as Source System now SAP R/3 will call one RFC ( like <i>Z_Ping</i> ) before calling any other RFC to send data to WebService. Following is the configuration -->
<b>SAP R/3 -- Sender RFC Adapter -- SAP XI -- Rec SOAP Adapter -- App System ( Web Service )</b>
Now can you tell me what is the appropraite way to do this, because in case of System Error ( in case when WebService is down  or Server on which WS is installed is down ) XI is not receving any exception payload so no mapping is happening.
Though I created the " <u><i>Error</i></u> " xsd & used it as a Fault message but the mapping is not getting initiated.
Can you tell me how I can achieve this & suggest me the design specification.
    Best Regards
    - Lalit -

    hey
u can do this using alerts, configure alerts so that it gets triggered whenever anythin wrong happens with Z_ping.and if response is negative then dont send subsequent messages.
alerts will always work irrespective of mapping.
but one thing is that triggering/not-triggering the subsequent message will be manual coz u need to check the alert before u send messages
    thanx

  • 802.11n (5Ghz only) network and Remote App.

I have a Time Capsule set up 802.11n (5Ghz only). iMac, MacBook & New Airport Express all connected to its network. Transmit rate is 270.
My question is, if my iPod Touch is g rated only, then how can the Remote App control my Airtunes if it cannot connect to my N network. Because it is.

    My Time Capsule
    Wireless Mode=Create a wireless network
    Radio Mode=802.11n only (5GHz)
My Time Capsule is connected to my Netgear (g only) router via ethernet.
I have the router broadcasting a g network for my iPod Touch. The Macs & AAE or all connected wirelessly to my Time Capsule N-only Network.
So the Touch should not be able to connect to my Airport Express as I understand it.
