Network Disk / Air Disk Issues

After recently upgrading the external hard drives at my workstation, I decided to try and use one of my Maxtor 5000DV drives as a networked drive - plugged into my AirPort base station.
I'm a guy who has used the Mac since it's inception in 1984 - one reason being that stuff "just works."
Of course, as we all know, that's not necessarily true. Some features, especially new ones, just DON'T. It's almost as if we're just beta testing stuff for Apple. If they can make it work over time, then they finally evolve it into something great, and if they cannot, it simply vanishes never to be mentioned again.
I feel that's where I am with this feature of AirPort.
I have called SIX different manufacturers of external hard drives. NOT ONE will tell me their product does or does not work when connecting to AirPort. What they will say is that it "should" work, and that they do not warranty it will work because the drives are not intended to be used in this manner.
(1) My networked drive just disappears. I cannot reconnect to it unless I go into the sharing tab for the disk in APU, turn off sharing, reset, then go back in and turn it back on. Then the disk will be available, for a while. But it is not stable and always stops working at some point. I guess Apple forgot to mention instability issues when using this feature as a selling point for the product.
(2) If not all drives are going to work, then shouldn't there be a list of compatible drives out there? If Apple understands the engineering of this product, then they should know what makes a hard drive compatible, or they should offer their own solution.
I would appreciated any assistance that anyone can offer on this subject. I really need to make this work.

If that's why TM is not supported, then it must be a serious technical issue. However, the product remains "current", and is still being sold with the stated USB Drive feature-set. If it's that serious, then the USB Drive claims should be pulled, or at least Apple should provide a complete list of verified Hard-Drives that *fully support* that feature.
I believe this is exactly why someone in another post stated that he "felt like he was a beta-product tester for Apple." A very unusual claim, in my personal experience at least-- but one that should still be treated with integrity and compassion by Apple.
There's an awful lot of AEBS users out there!

  • 10.6.5 network disk issues (Drobo)

Since I upgraded my Macs to 10.6.5 I have been unable to see my DroboShare/Drobo drive which is connected to the router by ethernet. I've reset the drive several times and also checked that I have the latest Drobo software. Has anyone else experienced this and is there a solution other than waiting for Drobo to issue an update? I can see no references on the Drobo site. Note: Direct connection of the Drobo unit by Firewire to one computer still works but this is only an emergency solution.

I had the demounting Drobo on USB 2 after 10.6.5 as well. Mine would not stay mounted for more than 5 minutes. After reading this thread i tried the FireWire fix. As my Mac is a January 2006 iMac4,1 with FireWire 400 and my Drobo is an early 2nd generation with FireWire 800 i needed to purchase a crossover cable. To my surprise it seems to be working. I know you can ride a bike in a car lane, but i'm using it the other way around to drive a car in a bike lane.
Over 6 hours of use and intense testing writing files back and forth and no glitches at all.
No files lost or damaged, not even the one file that was being written during one involuntary demounting and then was being verified during the next. I have 6TB in my Drobo in two 2TB volumes with 2TB used for protection.

  • Several computers sharing the music library stored on a network disk: howto

    Hi,
We currently have iTunes set up on a (laptop) computer. The music folder location is on a network disk (NAS). Everything has been working fine.
We recently purchased two more laptops for other family members and would like to set up the iTunes for those computers to use the same existing music folder. Is this possible? I understand that we must authorize all computers using the library to be able to play purchased music.
So far we have synced all our ipods using the one and only computer. In the future each of us will use their own laptop for syncing. Will this cause any problems regarding to the shared music library?
I guess that the playlists are stored in the itunes files, not in the music library. Due to this the playlists must be created on the new computers after the itunes installation.
    Best regards,
    ikl

You are most of the way there. The only issue will be that anything done by one machine will not be automatically updated to others. Files deleted from NAS by one machine will not be available to others anymore leading to ! next to track names if in libraries on other machines.
Files added by one machine will have to be added to the libraries of the other machines using 'add file to library' or 'add folder to library' options on menu.
Podcast subscriptions should be only files that will duplicate on NAS. Podcast subscriptions are individual to each library even if stored to same location. The files themselves well get numbered. The library will know which file to use. This allows episodes to be deleted without affecting other users.

  • Word for mac 2011 keyboard commands hang when network disk mounted

After much trial and error, I have found that, for my system, at least, MS Word for Mac 2011 hangs on keyboard commands when a network disk is mounted on my desktop.
Just wanted to alert all who get the beach ball when use keyboard commands in MS Word.
Symptom was that Cmd-C would take 8-13 seconds or so to copy 1 word, versus immediate when using menu commands. Same with Cmd-V paste. Also, opening a document took much longer.
Once I ejected network disk, problem disappeared.
Hopefully this will save someone else the time I spent tracking down the issue. I'd still love to know the root problem, though, as I prefer to have a remoe disk mounted on desktop while I work, and now I can't.

Follow these instructions to uninstall MacKeeper. They have been tested with the most recent version of MacKeeper (v 2.8). Earlier versions than the one released in 2012 require more extensive work to uninstall all its components.
The effects of having actually used MacKeeper to do anything are a completely different matter. The fastest way to take an exquisitely designed and painstakingly engineered Mac and make it run like a steaming pile of dung is to install and use such ill-conceived "cleaning" or "security" products. This is just one example of a broad category of time- and money-wasters capable of causing damage that can only be rectified by reinstalling OS X, restoring from a backup, or completely erasing your system and rebuilding it from the ground up. Never install such junk on a Mac.
If you used MacKeeper to encrypt any files or folders, use MacKeeper to un-encrypt them first.
Quit the MacKeeper app if it is running.
Open your Applications folder: Using the Finder's Go menu, select Applications.
Drag the MacKeeper icon from your Applications folder (not the Dock) to the Trash.
You will be asked to authenticate (twice):
You do not need to provide a reason for uninstalling it:
Just click the Uninstall MacKeeper button. You will be asked to authenticate again.
After it uninstalls you may empty the Trash and restart your Mac. All that will remain is an inert log file that does nothing but occupy space on your hard disk.

  • How can I store document on a network disk?

With the old Pages I was able to store and edit documents right from my network disk (where I have full permissions on). I updated to the new version, with the big changes, and now suddenly it tells me it is unable to store the document because I apparently don't have the right permissions. I checked the network device and I got full permissions, besides all other apps don't seem to have that problem, even more specific when I boot up the old Pages I can store and edit documents again without problem. So it really seems it's something in the new Pages that is causing the problem. Also, the latest update did not address or solve this issue.
It get's even worse. When I create a new document and store it on my own disk and then drag it to the network disk, there is no problem. When I open that document from the network disk and edit something and I try to re-save it, it tells me "I don't have permissions to store the document" and it messed up the document on the network disk from MyDocument.pages to MyDocument.pages.sb-76d48d4f-LvItH9, and instead of a file it is now a folder. This was behavior which was also not seen on the old Pages.

Pages 5 has over 90+ missing features plus annoying bugs like this.
Your previous Pages should be in your Applications/iWork folder.

  • Time machine unable to access network disk

I have a USB disk attached to my Airport Extreme, and use it as the target of my time machine backups from my mac book pro (connected via WiFi).  For the most part things work fine.  But if my macbook goes to sleep, after it wakes up it often (not always) gets the next time machine backup to fail with a message saying that it cannot access the disk.  At first I found a brutal method of correcting it: I would disconnect from WiFi, go to my AE and power cycle it.  After it came back the macbook never had any problem with the disk.  A little more exploration indicated that Lion wasn't unmounting the disk properly.  The following works (but sometimes requires a few iterations): I'll go to finder, eject the disk, and disconnect from Airport Extreme, and then go to the terminal and do
    sudo diskutil unmountdisk disk1
(I first do a diskutil list to find out the right disk)
and then ask time machine to backup again.  Many times I have to repeat this a few more times before it "takes".  Has anyone else run into this?  It clearly looks like a bug in Lion, since it never happened until I upgraded.
    Victor
PS. I understand that Apple says that they don't support time machine backup to network disks.  But they do to a time capsule!  It isn't really different.

I'm replying because, while I don't have a solution for you, I was experiencing the same issue at home not long ago. My solution has been to backup at the office (), but I'm about to switch back to running Time Machine at home. I think we'll be going through this together.
The difference in my situation is that my backup volume lives in a PowerMac G5, but I'm sure it's the same error.

  • Network Disk Disconecting

    Hello,
I have a new Core 2 Duo Macbook and just bought the new airport extreme, and I love it. However, there is a small issue.
I plugged an external hardrive into the airport in order to share my music over the network. It seemed to work like a charm. I went into itunes and I did not even have to tell itunes where to look for my music, it automatically found it.
The problem is that after I put new music on the hardrive, and then try to add it to my itunes library, the network disk disconnects. Then, when I try to reconect it it tells me the password is wrong. I have to go back through airport setup and set a new password for the disk, and then it connects again. The disk only seems to disconect when I go into itunes and select any music to "add to library." Any ideas what is going on? Thanks.

I will try to make this a little easier to understand.
    1. I have a USB drive plugged into my AEBS and my Macbook CD2 sees the drive just fine and all the files on the drive.
    2. My iTunes library is linked to my music on this hard drive, and all my music plays perfect in iTunes.
    3. I add new songs to this networked hard drive, then I go into iTunes and click "add to library" and then I select the new songs.
    4. The network drive disconnects without any warning. When I go to disk utility and try to reconnect the network drive, it tells me my password for connecting to the drive is wrong.
    5. To get the drive to reconnect I have to go back into Airport Setup Utility and set a new password for the drive and then I can reconnect.
    6. This happens every time I try to "add to library" new music in iTunes, and this is the only time I have any problems.
    7. I have a MBC2D with the newest os x and iTunes version and I have the brand new AEBS with the 'n' capability.

AppleTV2 does not support directly accessing media on network drives.
All media viewed must be via itunes.
If you can point iTunes to a folder on the network drive (Advanced>Choose Photos to Share) you maybe able to access them but only when itunes is running.

  • Sharing iTunes library between 2 computers and 2 iPods via network disk?

    Hi,
Me and the missus each got a laptop -hers a PC and mine a MacBook.
We both use iTunes and we've both got an iPod.
Recently I bought an Aiport Express and hooked it up with a 1TB WD MyBook -is there any way that we can share our iTunes library via the network disk, so that we can 1. have full read/write access from both laptops and 2. both sync our iPods?
Furthermore, is there a way for iTunes to monitor the music folder, so instead of me dragging music into iTunes (e.g. CD's that were ripped with other software than iTunes) iTunes would just update every once in a while, to check for new mp3's (kinda like Picasa does with pictures)?
More questions most likely will pop up, but this is the most pressing ones.
    Thanks in advance
    /Jakob F.

*is there a way for iTunes to monitor the music folder, so instead of me dragging music into iTunes*
iTunes doesn't support folder watching, anything you add to a folder on your hard drive has to be manually added to the iTunes Library: Adding Content to iTunes
You could have a look at this Applescript for folder watching on a Mac: Doug's Applescripts - Folder Actions and iTunes or this program for Windows: iTunes Folder Watch for Windows
You'd need to do a deeper bit of research on both as I don't know if either would work from a folder that's effectively not on either computer

  • Help needed with using network disk with iMovie with NFS or AFP

    Hi,
I have iMac with iMovie08 that talks to a remote disk hosted under Linux over a gigabit network using SMB (Samba). It all works ok and I have done a few movies.
Now, I have done some tests with NFS and AFP (AppleTalk) and it seems that these are much faster than SMB.
I then stopped the Samba server and proceeded to setup NFS and also AFP
    First NFS,
So I then exported my directory using NFS and I can see everything from my Mac (correct permissions too since I made both user and group IDs the same...). The problem is that when I launch iMovie it shows me the Volume for my external networked disk but it shows it with a little triangle with yellow exclamation and it does not show any of the events (>500GB of events).
If I stop NFS and then switch to AFP I get the same behavior. That is, everything from the Mac works on the AFS mounted disk (copying files back and forth, etc....) but I can't see the contents of the disk from within iMovie
I changed permissions so that anybody can read/write/execute (although there are files that have an '@' sign at the end when I do ls -l on them and I can't remember what that means....)
If I stop NFS and then go back to SMB (Samba) then I am back to a working configuration.
Can I use NFS or AFP with iMovie? What exactly does the yellow triangle mean?
    Thanks

  • Aperture 3 with Library on a network Disk

Please, someone who have buy the full version, could tell me if Aperture 3 works with a library on the network disk. Because with the trial version it's impossible. Thanks for our reply.

I have been experimenting with Aperture 3 and this workaround for a couple of days and I can say that Aperture 3 is pretty much useless over a network - at least in my case.
I migrated all of my iPhoto libraries (about 33K images / 200 GB) to A3 on Mac 1. The library is on an external disk connected to Mac 1 and everything works fine on this computer. I do notice that A3 with one large library is considerably slower than iPhoto was with smaller libraries. Not too much of a surprise, but the big surprise was how differently it behaved over the network:
    - It takes 45+ seconds to load the library over Gb Ethernet.
    - None of the thumbnails show up. None of the faces in Faces show up. However, if you open the Viewer on a thumbnail, the image appears quite fast. Nothing I tried could make the thumbnails appear. Looking at the library XML files, the paths and everything look just fine...
    - Importing takes forever. I tried importing a small set of 53 images. This would take about 30 seconds with iPhoto (over the network) and after about 20 minutes, I cancelled the tasks. 5 minutes later, Aperture is still trying to cancel.
I don't see anyway to replicate the workflow I had in iPhoto that I was hoping to improve upon using a better tool. I would run iPhoto on Mac 1 with all of the photos in libraries on an external disk connected to Mac 1. From Mac 2, I could open and use the libraries on Mac 2 with negligible speed difference compared to working on Mac 1.
I need a configuration like this to work because my wife and I share the same libraries. I could create a library with referenced masters and somehow sync that library between the computers, but that's not what I wanted. Syncing creates a whole new set of problems...
    Any suggestions / recommendations?

  • Publish iCal calendar to local network disk?

The Misses and I would like to share calalendars in a way other than shouting out information to one another across the room. We recently purchased a Time Capsule and would like to publish our calendars to the TC harddisk. (We did this previously with another network disk we have but used a different router to configure it)
Based on our previous success at doing this, I presume we only need an ip address for the hard disk to set it up. I can't remember how we did this in the past and I don't want to use a program other than ical to do this.
I just want my calendar and her calendar to publish to the disk so that we can each subscribe to the others.
Can anyone help me with this?

There was a previous discussion that may help. Do a search for local network shareing, but expand out to all year. This may be what you need. Haven't tried it myself yet, but it looks like it may be the answer. I have the same need as you, BTW.
Re: Entering iCal from a network

You need to use a product like BusySync to selectively share calendars across a network. Your present approach is guaranteed to fail, and to corrupt your event and task data.
