Network Hostname Remains 'archiso'; Local Changeable

Hey all,
I've installed arch linux on 4 (or 6 boxes, if you count reinstalls ), but on my most recent install I can't seem to convince the router than the box's name is not "archiso." (As a hopefully-helpful aside, monitorix also thinks the hostname is "archiso").  I do not have this problem with my other boxes.
My configuration is almost verbatim a following of the Wireless Setup ArchWiki entry section 2.1.7.2 Systemd with wpa_supplicant and static IP
The output of my [email protected] file is as follows:
[Unit]
Description=Wireless (Home) Connectivity (%i)
Wants=network.target
Before=network.target
BindsTo=sys-subsystem-net-devices-%i.device
After=sys-subsystem-net-devices-%i.device
[Service]
Type=oneshot
RemainAfterExit=yes
EnvironmentFile=/etc/conf.d/network-wireless\@%i
ExecStart=/usr/bin/ip link set dev %i up
ExecStart=/usr/bin/wpa_supplicant -B -i %i -c /etc/wpa_supplicant.conf
ExecStart=/usr/bin/ip addr add ${address}/${netmask} broadcast ${broadcast} dev %i
ExecStart=/usr/bin/ip route add default via ${gateway}
ExecStop=/usr/bin/ip addr flush dev %i
ExecStop=/usr/bin/ip link set dev %i down
[Install]
WantedBy=multi-user.target
and my /etc/conf.d/network-wireless@[actualWifiInterface]:
address=192.168.1.80
netmask=24
broadcast=192.168.1.255
gateway=192.168.1.254
and my /etc/wpa_supplicant.conf
network={
ssid="[RealRouterSSID]"
#psk="[RealPassphrase]"
psk=[Real_wpa_passphrase_output]
and finally, /etc/hostname:
NotArchiso
(And yes, the hostname displayed on the tty is correctly "NotArchiso")
One final note: on this persistently "archiso"-hostnamed box, I have never used dhcpcd.  All the other boxes connect via a static IP address as well, but have previously connected to the router at least once using dhcpcd.
Any hints or tips would be greatly appreciated.  This issue is admittedly more aesthetic than anything since there's only one "archiso," but in the words of a young Montgomery Burns, "You can't all sign [your names] with an X."

If 'avahi' and 'samba' are the only other packages beside 'dhcpcd' which can properly announce a hostname to the router, then for me personally it's just easier to configure and run dhcpcd once then return to the above-configured static IP network-wireless service.

    error message that my local host name is in use and the system generates a new one every time I wake my mac the error mssg reads This computer’s local hostname “D-360.local” is already in use on this network. The name has been changed to “D-444.local”.

    There are several possible causes for this behavior.
    1. Two (or more) computers on the local network have the same Bonjour name, such as "X's-MacBook-Pro.local". Resolve the name conflict by renaming one or more of them in the Sharing preference pane.
    2. You have two simultaneous connections to the same local network: probably Ethernet and Wi-Fi. If applicable, disconnect the Ethernet cable or turn off Wi-Fi.
    3. A Mac wakes from sleep due to network traffic. This is a bug in OS X that may only affect some models.
    4. A device that gets its network address from the router wakes from sleep, and the address it was using before has been assigned to another device.
    5. A third-party wireless router has incompatible settings or firmware. In that case, refer to the manufacturer or ISP for support. Restarting the router may help, temporarily.

    Hi, this is a common problem, mostly just irksome though.
    It can have many cause, like using more than one Interface for connections, Router temporarily losing x.local & seeing a new connection with x.local already used, insists it must be x-1.local, x-2.local, etc..
    What all Sharing do you have enabled?

  • Can't preview files from a network drive to a local CF9 server.

    Hi,
    I have the following set up:
    CF9 Local Dev version
    CF Builder 2.
    Project files are in a network drive N:\project
    I have RDS set up and everything seems to work ok, view DSN, files, etc on my local server.
    In the URL prefix section I even created a map:
    Local Path: N:\project,
    URL prefix: http://localhost:8500/project/
    There is no FTP set up on the CF9 server.
    The problem is that when I try to preview a file that I am working on from N:\project, it doesn't show on my local server. The previewing part works if I manually move the file to CF9. But it is the automatic uploading (or moving) of the file to the local CF9  that doesn't seem to work.
    BTW, I have a similar set up in DreamWeaver, where I am editing the same project (or site in this case) off of  N:\project, uploading to the same local CF9 server through RDS, and it works fine.
    I know that if in CF Builder you move the project to under the web root it will work but that would not work for us, since we need to keep the project source files on a network drive for sharing/backup purposes.
    Has anyone been able to successfully preview source files from a network drive on a local CF9 server?
    Thanks in advance,

    Hi again,
    After doing some more googling I realize that for files to be previewed the MUST be under wwwroot. This wasn't too clear in the CF documentation.
    So my new question is:
    Is there are way, once I save a file to automatically copy it from one location(N:\project) to another (c:/ColdFusion9/wwwroot/project)?
    I think there is a way to do it with Ant or some sort of Eclipse feature, but I am not too familiar with either. Could someone point me in the right direction?
    Thanks,

  • How to unshare /Network/Servers/users-computer.local ?

    Hi
    are there any security issues on /Network/Servers/users-computer.local ?
    Everytime I delete it :sudo rm -rf /Network/* removes the shared stuff.
    But when I log back in I see /Network/Servers/users-computer.local is there again.
    Are who can access my users-computer.local? is it shared via network?
    How do i delete it permanently?
    thanks
    Kilopopo

    You can't. Your single machine is on its own Network, with you as the local user. What you're seeing is normal behavior. There's nothing to worry about.

  • Change Network Home Folder to Local Home Folders

    Hello and Thanks in advance for your help.
    I created a mac network in our school this year. This is used for a video editing lab of 14 iMac's. I used a Mac Xserver with Server 10.5.7 on it and my clients are also 10.5.7. I upgraded my server hard drives to three 1TB hard drives in RAID 0 array. I created my users and decided to use true network homes so the students could use any mac in the lab at any given time. The Server has two Gigabit connections to it. This setup works great until you get more than 5 users at one time importing and editing videos. I believe the servers Hard Drives could not keep up with the data streams for multiple users and video editing.
    What is the easiest way to switch the students network home folders to local home folders on the iMacs? I tried it with a dummy account that I've been using from the beginning but when I try to change the mobility preferences in WGM to create a mobile account at login and use default syncing I get 2 different error messages.
    Either error while saving 14006 Or Error while saving 14084
    Sometimes an error about DSutil.cp line 712 comes up as well.
    Is it possible to have the students current Network Home folders sync to a local iMac and then switch them to use local home folders only? I'm trying to keep the students from losing the last few weeks of work.
    Should I try to use the create mobile account on the actual iMac instead of in WGM on the server?
    Thanks again,
    Mitch

    Thanks for the info Tony.
    Just for other people who are looking for answers to this problem I'll give my specifics.
    14 iMac workstations
    1 XServe server upgraded w/ 3 1TB WD Caviar Black drives RAID 0
    All networked using 1 Cisco Gigabit switch
    1 GB to each iMac
    (2) 1 GB connections to the Server
    The original true network home folders worked out okay for Final Cut Pro users. About 6 could work at the same time, capturing and editing their work. For iMovie HD only about 3 could use it at the same time.
    I could not get iMovie '09 v 8.0.5 to import to the network homes. Something about video library errors if I remember correctly. So I went back and they have been using iMovie HD with no problems.
    There was a lot of dropped frames and time wasted on importing with time code brakes.
    This is where I decided to create mobile accounts for each student on a specific computer set by the teacher. As stated about it will take about 3 minutes per GB of data to copy from the server to the local computer. Near the end of the student list (about 70) it would copy the data fairly quickly and then would sit at 100% for about 7+ minutes before It would finally complete and log off.
    The login sync still only takes about 1 full minute and the logout usually takes 1 minute but can sometimes take up to 3 depending on how much capturing they have done.
    After about 2 full weeks of use, this solution still seems very viable. There have been no complaints about dropped frames or lag while capturing. There is also no lag while using iMovie HD (which was very problematic before) during editing and playback. This is still great because at the end of the day they still have a mobile account and can access their data from any mac, besides the one they have a mobile account setup on. Also, if something happens to the server they can still login to the computer with their mobile account and still accomplish work and when the server is back up it will automatically sync on the next login.
    I'm not sure if it was the network or hard drive speed causing the lag. My server will only hold 3 SATA drives and they had to be configured for 1.5 instead of 3.0. The RAID was also setup w/ apple software and was not a hardware card.

  • Resolving hostname depending on local network?

    I have a basic networking question. On my laptop, when I'm connected to my home wireless network, I'd like home.example.com to resolve to my home servers local IP address, 192.168.1.100. But if I'm not connected to that network, I'd like it to resolve as a normal DNS request (e.g, perform the lookup).
    I'm using wicd as my network manager.
    Edit: To clarify a bit more, I have a server on my home network. I would like to be able to mount an SSHFS share no matter where I connect from. If I'm connected to my home network, I'd like to use the internal IP address, 192.1.168.100. If I'm on a different network, I'd like to use the public domain name. The reason I'd like to use the internal IP address if possible, is because it cuts latency in half, as well as if I were to not have Internet access at the home network, it wouldn't fail due to not having access to a DNS server.
    Last edited by Ruckus (2009-08-15 09:31:06)

    You essentially have to configure  your home dns server. If your laptop points to the gateway for dns resolution, you can use a program like dnsmasq on the server to setup a dns server, and I think you can specify items in the server's /etc/hosts that dnsmasq will use for name resolution.

    Usually this message means that you may have two simultaneous connections to the same local network: probably Ethernet and Wi-Fi. Disconnect the Ethernet cable or turn off Wi-Fi. If that's not the issue, shut down any virtual machines (Parallels, VMware, or VirtualBox) that are running. Rename the computer in the Sharing preference pane.

  • Possible to associate one local hostname with two local addresses?

    I'm trying to set up a backup system for our LAN. Several of the programs involved (e.g., rsnapshot) have their configuration based around what they recognize as the hostname of the other end. It's easy enough to set the local hostnames as I like, either in /etc/hosts or in /etc/ssh/ssh_config.
    BUT the issue is that some of my machines might have different IP addresses depending on whether they're connected over wire or wifi. (Sometimes both connections are up; then wire should take precedence.) And some of the services I'm setting up (again, rsnapshot is an example) have the server initiate the connection to the client. (At least, it's what I think of as the server: the machine with the static wired LAN connection that the backup storage is kept on. The machines being backed up are the ones whose numeric IP isn't stable.)
    Again, this is all inside a LAN. The IPs involved are all 192.168.*.* stuff.
    How do I get the server to know what IP a given host, e.g., "wifeslaptop", has? If it were just a matter of a single network card, e.g., only wifi connections, then the router is already able to assign it a fixed local IP. But wifeslaptop might (instead or additionally) be connected by wire, too.
    I see five possible strategies for solving this.
    1. Is it possible to get the server to associate two numeric addresses with a single hostname? So that it recognizes both as instances of "wifeslaptop", and I guess if it wants to initiate a connection to that host, it tries the first numeric address then the second if that fails? Is it possible to do this simply, or does it require installing some kind of extra server/daemon?
    2. Failing that, I guess I need to wrestle with our router to try to get it to assign the same numeric address to the wired or the wifi connection, and ensure that both connections are never active at the same time.
    3. Or I've got to set up some kind of local dynamic dns system, so that my server can look up "wifeslaptop" and discover what LAN IP address it has.
    4. Failing all of that, maybe I need to instead dynamically generate the config files for the services I'm trying to use. E.g., before running rsnapshot, the server could ping the two numeric addresses wifeslaptop might have, then generate a rsnapshot config file on the fly associating the address which is present with the (single) backup store it keeps for wife's laptop.
    5. Or maybe simplest yet, if it works, I could (either with symlinks or with mount -o bind) let rsnapshot THINK there are two backup stores, one for each version of wifeslaptop, but have them point to the same place on disk.
    I'm listing all these strategies so that you can say "Forget about 1, 4 or 5 are much easier." But for the moment, what I'm thinking about is 1. Is this easy to do?

    There's some promising text in "man -s7 hostname" which says env variable HOSTALIASES can point to a file which expands simple hostname aliases (with no periods) to whatever you want (I think the expansion has to be to a hostname not a numeric address, but not sure). One could then just manipulate the alias file dynamically. However, this doesn't seem to work with any of the utilities I tried (ping, host).
    I guess I could try manipulating /etc/hosts or /etc/ssh_config, since I'm going to be using rsnapshot on top of ssh. But given the potential downsides of messing up either of those files, I'm now inclined to just generate rsnapshot's config file dynamically instead. And hope that similar workarounds can be found for other utilities...

  • Changeip hostname to name.local rendered server inaccessible most of the time

    I followed the instructions here:
    http://maymay.net/blog/2007/09/19/changing-the-hostname-on-mac-os-x-server/
    According to Apple, I also have to change the hostname somewhere else.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TA24015
    "Before running changeip, be sure you have updated the server's hostname in DNS to match the hostname provided to changeip; otherwise errors will be logged in system.log, and services may not function properly".
    I am not if you have followed my plight before currently running DNS so I changed it as described in the blog post above to be the bonjour name. Sometimes I can access it at [email protected] On some computers 100% of the time, and on some computers not at all. This may very well have to do with whether or not they are on the same subnet.
    What I'm wondering is did I use the changeip command correctly, or should the unix name be separate from the bonjour name? When I first set it up, it seemed to function once I enabled DHCP. I was trying to solve a daylite problem originally. c'est la vie.
    I am primarily trying to use it as a local file server/daylite server. Daylite mostly functions, while the file server does not. I hope this isn't extraneous information. Probably I need to access it via IP?
    I'll post the original Daylite KB article if that would be useful to you.
    --Sam

    You can use both Bonjour (multicast DNS) and traditional DNS (unicast DNS) together.  Your clients can use your own DNS server to access LAN-local services, and Bonjour where that's appropriate (eg: client to client, server to client, etc).
    To do the internal and external demarcation, register two domain names.  I usually use different TLDs on the same domain, and registering and holding a few extra of these domains means you won't have "fun" later, as the DNS namespace continues to fill up.
    You can then use the external domain name for hosted mail services and stuff that's accessible outside your LAN, and that'll be the domain name that's listed in the hosting service's or your ISP's public-facing DNS.
    Your internal network uses your own DNS server, and your DNS server then provides translations for your static-addressed devices on your network (eg: network printers, your external gateway-router-firewall device, any NAS devices, your Mac OS X Server box, etc), are referenced in your local DNS using your internal domain name.  Your internal domain name and your local host translations are all used within your private DNS server configuration, and the translations are not accessible outside your LAN; you need to be connected to your LAN directly, or via VPN.
    Using the two domain names means you don't have to manage the same domain name for both internal and external sites, and the external DNS services.  You're managing two separate and non-overlapping domains this way, rather than one domain name that has two seperate and authoritative servers active.
    There's a whole lot more detail in that DNS article you're probably reading by now, too.

  • Network hostname change

    Trouble with local hostname on same network needing to be changed

    It happened to me once. I went to the sharing preferences. The computer's name had not been changed, but it could only be accessed at the new name:
    I clicked "edit" and then it showed up as the new name. I changed it back to the correct name:
    Then I restarted my computer (which may not be necessary). That fixed the problem and it hasn't happened since (knock on wood!).
    When/If the problem becomes chronic, turning IPv6 off seems to work for some people. It a quick fix though, not a solution. By turning it off, you are also slowing down the transition from IPv4 to IPv6 as the new, more secure and faster standard protocol.
    I've heard people blame routers. I have the latest version of Verizon's FiOS router and yet it happened to me too. So while you may have to upgrade your router for IPv6 to work, it will not solve this particular problem, which I believe is in OS X (Mountain Lion).  I asked if the issue had been fixed with Mavericks but I never got an answer.

  • Network user access to local disk to solve I/O throughput issue?

    Not sure if this is the best forum for this, but...
    THE ISSUE:
    I work at a small university and am responsible for the Mac network and video dept (only 1 xserve and about 20-odd clients). Anyway, everyone uses network accounts. I have 3 iMacs for Final Cut and so far everyone just captures to the server over gigabit ethernet. We're only using DV25 (~4MB/sec transfer) and it hasn't been an issue until this week. Now as people begin to stress more about final projects, however, and are spending more time, the suites are being used more during the same times. Even though the throughput is usually less than 10MB/sec, which (I think?) is well under what gigabit ethernet supports, we're consistently getting stalled video and dropped frames. We've often had multiple people working on projects (playback) simultaneously in the past, but never capturing simultaneously before. Also, another factor that may come into play, is my 3TB RAID 5 that they're using has become rather full at this point (down to 200MB) so perhaps read/write times are being affected?
    Now, we're looking at adding 6 more Final Cut suites, which will potentially increase my throughput load by 200%, so I really need to find a solid solution (and fibre cards are not an option since they're iMacs--and we don't have that budget anyway).
    THE QUESTION:
    Since the issue seems to only occur while capturing and not during playback, it seems the easiest solution would be to give the editor group access to the local hard drive (and then copy from there to their network storage so they can work on any given station later) which I'm not sure how the best way to do this would be. OR, should gigabit ethernet be capable of sustaining the throughput I need and there's some other problem I should be looking at to fix that?
    Related, if they do capture to the local disk (or even an external hard drive, which we may end up going to), is there some script or something that can be run every night to automatically copy files from X location on a local drive to Y location (say, a common media storage location) on the server RAID?

    Hi
    +". . . my 3TB RAID 5 that they're using has become rather full at this point (down to 200MB). . ."+
    I think the problem you're currently seeing starts (and probably ends) here. Regardless of what your data comprises of the general rule of thumb is to make sure you keep at least 10% of free disk space for any hard drive let alone a RAID. Most people would generally recommend 15% for a RAID 5. A rough calculation based on your 3TB RAID would mean you should keep at least 300GB free. You're well below that unless 200MB is a typo? I'm surprised the whole thing has not ground to a halt?
    Video Capture, Editing and Playback in a network home environment is always going to place a considerable strain on any network unless you've prepared the ground first. For example 60 seconds of RAW Video is roughly 200MB in size. Multiply this for a classroom of 16 and that's a lot of data. Even if you're not using hi-def you're still talking a lot of data.
    There are better ways of doing this.
    HTH?

  • Macbook bound to AD won't allow network login or new local account creation

    As the title states I am having an issue related to a macbook pro that is bound to active directory. The only option we tweak when binding the macs to AD is that we opt to "create mobile account" option under directory utility.
    It also seems that while we can login through the local admin account, new local accounts cannot be created (the account creation window hangs when you create account).
    Any help would be appreciated

    Hi
    To successfully bind a mac workstation to Active Directory certain things need to be in place:
    DNS has to be fully resolving on both pointers. This is done on the PDC or whatever server is the designated DNS Server.
    Date and Time settings need to be adjusted to reflect whatever is designated as the NTP Server in the AD environment. Adjust the Date & Time Preferences Pane and find out from the Windows Network Administrator what the NTP Server IP address is.
    You must use account credentials that has authority for the AD Domain. If you're trying to use your own account it may be restricted in what it can do? A domain account has special privileges not usually accorded to ordinary user accounts.
    This assumes you're (a) not the Active Directory Network Administrator and (b) you're using the Active Directory plug-in the login options section of the Accounts Preferences Pane. It's a good idea to click the "Open Directory Utility" button when binding to Active Directory. It's also a good idea to access the Advanced Section once the Utility has opened.
    If this is failing at the bind stage then perhaps you should review the details you've been given when binding to AD? It may be worthwhile to clear the workstation from the Computer OU before you try again?
    The above is not an exhaustive list but should help?

  • Retrospect incremental network backup of formerly local storage?

    Im not running OSX Server, but maybe this is the best forum to post this question?
    Is there a way to make Retrospect incrementally backup a network client that was formerly a local drive on a storage set?
    I was running Retrospect 5.0 on an OS9.2.2 machine to a local, SCSI AIT drive.
    The local AIT drive died, but I have another drive on a different OSX.3.9 machine in the office.
    I dragged the 'storage sets' from the OS9 machine to an internal drive on the office OSX machine, and proceeded to try to backup the OS9 machine (which has Retrospect Client) over the network.
    The problem is, Retrospect thinks all the files on the client machine have not been backed up yet, even though they were backed up when the AIT drive was local.
    Is there any way to tell Retrospect that these (40GB) files across the network have been backed up to this Storage Set when it was local?
    Has anybody run into this issue?
    TIA for any suggestions.

    Hi,
    Based on my knowledge, Windows7 backup does not provide the differential backup functionality. So user cannot point the backup program to a full backup and ask it to do a differential backup (only the changes since the last full).
    Windows7 backup only provides an incremental backup functionality. And the incremental would be based only upon the most recently taken backup. However, if you swap the backup target after every full, the next backup would be full every time.
    You can follow the articles below for additional help about back and restore:
