Network Problems with LaCie Firewire or USB Hub

Hi Folks,
I have a recurring problem with my 27-Inch iMac mid-2010 running OSX 10.7.2 (had same problem with Snow Leopard before upgrading) where, when a Firewire device ( LA Cie HD) or a USB Hub is pluged-in the wired ethernet will not work on wake up from sleep.
I always have to cycle off my Cisco Router for the Mac to use the wired ethernet.
Does not happen with the WIFI and does not happen if there is no firewire device or USB hub pluged in.
Anyone seen this before? Anyone with an idea on how to resolve this?
Thanks in advance for your thoughts
Dan

I picked up a 2big network a few days ago (to replace two Buffalo LinkStation Pros) and also have not been able to get an icon for the drive to appear on my mac desktop, despite being able to access the 2big through "Connect to Server." I hope to learn more from LaCie.
A successful workaround I'm using is to put the contents of each share on the 2big drive into a single folder in the share, make an alias of the folder in the share, and drag/copy the alias to the desktop of any machine needing access to the share. Admittedly a little kludgy, but easy to disseminate once set up. The desktop alias calls up the respective folder quite crisply, tested now for several machines on the network -- at least with up to ~40 Gb in a given folder/share so far. For reference, this network currently has 6 Mac and 3 Win XP nodes.

I have 2 LaCie HDD's about 70 cm away from the mouse, I use them on Thunderbolt. But in operation or not - the result is the same, the mouse plays up! Just now I was clicking the desktop and the mouse created a new folder!!

Can airport express be used to extend a wifi network created with a Comcast Modem/wifi hub?

Apple tells us that the AirPort Express will only "extend" a wireless network...using wireless only...if it is used with another Apple router.
So, it would be extremely unlikely that this would work with your Comcast modem/router.

  • Unknown device - ipod nano fine - problem with windows xp and usb root hub

Greetings all. I've seen this question come up over and over again and have been working on it following previous posts and posts on microsoft and hp sites for a couple of days now.
First off - the ipod nano is fine. Works on my son's computer well.
When I plug it into my 6 months new HP Pavilion laptop it says: 'found new hardware' and goes through the process of installing it, says it's been installed, but then shows 'unknown device'. In Device Manager it tells me there are no drivers installed, but when I try to follow the other instructions on this forum to update the drive to USB mass storage device (usbstor.inf), it tells me the best driver is installed and won't do it.
Many seem to have this problem with devices other than the iPod on Windows service pack 2 so I went to the Microsoft forums and they seem just as puzzled. I've updated all my Windows & HP software to the latest possible versions. The problem is definitely in the USB. Once, when I uninstalled the USB device and then rebooted the computer with my iPod still plugged into the port, it found my iPod, correctly identified it, and for a blissful moment I thought everything was fine! Then it reinstalled the USB drivers and made a comment to the effect that I should move the iPod to a USB 2.0 port for more effective operation and the iPod disappeared again.
I have 3 USB ports on my laptop, all are USB 2.0 and all 3 have the same problem.
I've tried all the stuff people have already said on here...does anyone have any NEW ideas? I'm hesitant to take it in for service because it seems to be a software problem that should be fixable.
Thanks in advance for your help and sorry about the long post.

This isn't a solution, but it's something I just tried and it may provide someone additional clues about's going on. I too think this is some sort of USB problem.
I have 6 USB ports. Two of them are USB 2.0. Since I applied the 03-23 update my computer hasn't recognized my nano at all. I would connect my nano and I couldn't get it to show up in My Computer, in iTunes, or on the far right side of the Start taskbar.
I just tried plugging my nano into the first USB port of my USB 2.0 pair and left the second 2.0 port empty. I then rebooted with the nano attached. Viola - I get a "Found New Hardware Apple iPod USB Device" message. My nano is now flashing "Do Not Disconnect." A small removeable storage icon with green arrow now shows on the far right side of the Start taskbar. If I click on it (like you're going to eject it) the note displayed says "Safely remove USB Mass Storage Device - Drive (F:)".
If I go into My Computer, "Removeable Disk (F:)" now shows there. However, if I try to follow Trevor's instructions in another post to "go into My Computer with iPod connected, right click it, wait till the right click menu comes up (could take a few minutes); click Format, . . ." I'm stuck. I do the right click, watch the hour glass and wait for the Format menu to come up but it never does. Eventually the hour glass just goes away. No message, no Format menu. The waiting hour glass just goes away.
My computer isn't as new as yours, but like you I am completely current on maintenance.
I'm going to keep trying . . . If anyone has any ideas, please let me know.

  • Problem with external FireWire drive

Two weeks ago I purchased a 1 tb Iomega ultra drive with FireWire 800/Firewire 400/USB 2/ESATA to use for back ups. I plugged it in the Firewire 800 port of my iMac. It worked fine until early this morning. I noticed there was a problem first because it was taking forever to log off or restart the computer with the drive connected and second that Time Machine had stopped doing backups a few hours previously and the drive was no longer recognized by OSX. I can plug it into a USB 2 port and it works fine. I have two Lacie drives daisy chained from the same Firewire 800 port - so the port is just fine. Thus it appears that the problem is with the Firewire 800 connection on the Iomega drive. Time Machine works with USB but I bought the drive for its flexibility. In future I might want use it as a bootable drive plus Firewire 800 is faster than USB 2. Any idea if this could be a software problem? I hate to return this drive since a) I would need to securely erase it first; b) I would have no time machine backup until I received a replacement (though I am doing less frequent conventional backups on 3 other drives (ie subsets of my files since none of the other drives are large enough for a single time machine backup plus I like redundancy); c) it is a pain to pack up and return.
So my question is: should I bother or just live with USB 2 and hope that the FireWire problem does not mean the drive is a piece of junk and should not be trusted for anything?

I called the store where I bought the drive and was told I have up to 30 days to return it. So I tried plugging it into the firewire 800 daisy chain (at the end) and now it's working again. So I will watch it closely over the next few days to see if this happens again within the 30 day return period. Also by registering online at the Iomega website, I now have 3 year warranty.
Also from reading other threads about firewire issues, it appears that intermittent firewire problems may be more prevalent than I would expect (based on previous experience with a variety of firewire drives from many vendors).

  • IPOD CONNECTIVITY PROBLEM WITH WINDOWS XP VIA USB 2.0

    Enough is enough.
I have an ipod touch and I am having difficulty connecting it to my pc via usb 2.0.
I have searched the entire web and came across many cases similar or the same as mine. It's time for apple to face the fact that there is something wrong with either the apple mobile service or the apple usb drivers or the itunes software that causes connectivity problems with win xp.
For the record my case is this:
I got my itouch 3 days ago. I installed itunes 8.0. Then I plugged in my ipod to a usb extension cable port connected to a usb at the back of my desktop computer. At first I got the "this usb device can perform faster if you plug it to a usb 2.0 port etc." message. So I did. I removed the extension cable and connected it directly to one of the usb ports at the back. The first time it synchronized, it seemed fine. So I decided before I do anything with it, to update it to the 2.1 version. I made my account and bought (very bad policy there apple, it should be free or at least cheeper than 8 euro) the 2.1 update. I clicked to update the i-touch. While it was updating it crashed during the restore process (because it was disconnected but I didn't know that at the time). I unplugged it, resetted and plugged it back and managed to continue the restoring process until it was updated. After figuring out itunes I chose the "manage files manually option", kept everything unchecked in the sync options except the applications. I noticed there were random disconnections here and there but I didn't pay much attention because they weren't very frequent.
The next day I plug in the touch again and suddenly I hear that annoying "connecting-disconnecting" sound from windows while my touch kept disappearing and reappearing in itunes. Suddenly my playlists disappeared from the touch. Nothing was in the touch any more. How could that happen since i had chosen to manage my files manually instead of synchronizing? So I unplugged the touch again, restarted the touch, restarted the pc, stopped and restarted the apple mobile service, unistalled and reinstalled itunes, searched microsoft support and read many usb troubleshooting documents in the web. Nothing happened. The touch randomly keeps disconnecting from the usb. I eventually managed to put my stuff back in and keep them there.
    Here's what I know:
    1) There is nothing wrong with my usb ports. I don't use usb hubs, they are usb 2.0, the voltage (500mA) is correct in the device manager. Everything else works fine there.
    2) The ipod touch does not support disk mode so you can't see it under "my computer" and this is not a problem.
3)There is nothing wrong with the ipod, it works perfectly.
    4) This is not a usb cable physical problem.
    5) The five R's are irrelevant with this situation.
Uninstalling and reinstalling itunes doesn't solve the problem, neither does hard resetting the ipod.
    6) Older PC configurations seem to be more affected by this but it doesn't have to do with unsupported specific chipsets.
    Here's what needs investigating:
    1) There may be a problem with the apple mobile service running on win XP.
    2) There may be a problem with the apple usb driver and win XP or older motherboards.
    3) There may be a 2.1 firmware issue with usb 2.0 connectivity.
Workaround so you don't go nuts:
Use USB 1.1 instead of 2.0. It is A LOT slower but it keeps the connection stable and you can work with the ipod. Just start copying and go do something else for the next hour. So far it works for me.
This is a serious issue that needs immediate attention. I've stumbled across forum discussions dating to 2005 with this problem (with older ipods of course).

I think this needs to be put down to the eternal PC/Mac argument. Apple dont want to fix this as they want everyone to buy a Mac. Its a business, understandable, but in turning away PC buyers they alienate a huge percentage of the market.
Now, I had my first iTouch stolen. It synced, for the most part, very well, just occasionally it removed settings and music, but ticking boxes each time I sync'd sorted that, Its a workflow procedure.
SO, now that my Touch has been replaced, iTunes cannot see it. The PC can identify it on USB1 or USB2, My work lap top can see it and has indeed upgraded it to V2 software, just in case that was the issue, but no. For some really weird reason Itunes on my desktop cannot see the new pod.
This does not make sense with the argument that Apple software doesnt work on a PC, but doesnt help that none of the Apple support staff, phone or in-store have a clue about Windows operations.
Because my Touch has now been trying to connect to 6 separate installs of itunes, multiple USB ports, multiple USB cables, a complete overhaul of the registry settings (everything else still works), and the loss of all my previous settings and backups from the last Touch... but still, the PC says its an ipod but cant install it, iTunes sits there, dumb.
The only thing I can do now is sell the device as brand new as it has never had music on it and is just a week old...
It has changed the MiniMac I was going to have for my new flat screen TV into a PC and suggests that anyone with a PC should stick to devices that run on PC, of which there are many, just without the user interface of the dear departed IPod Touch.
    Thanks

  • 10.4.5 Update Causing Error -36 with LaCie Firewire External Hard drives

I have two LaCie Firewire external drives, one for extra storage and one for backups. Since the 10.4.5 update, I've been unable to copy files consistently from my external drives to my hard drive or other external drives. The disks mount, and run like normal - I have my iTunes library on one drive, and all the tracks play normally. I am able to copy very small files, but anything over a couple mb gives me an error -36. I've run disk utilities etc on the external drives and they appear to be just fine. In order to see if it's an OS problem, I hooked the external drives (in a daisy chain) to my girlfriend's ibook. She's running Jaguar still, and had no problems. So it appears that it's an OS upgrade problem. One note, I didn't disconnect the drives when I ran the upgrade, but then, I never have for upgrades, only full OS installs. Is anyone else having this problem and know of any fixes?

    Libby,
Backup is unable to make a restorable by Disk Utility backup. You can restore pieces of the software as outlined in my FAQ about backing up user data:
    http://www.macmaps.com/backup.html
But to be able to restore a backup with Disk Utility, you need a cloning utility to have made the backup.
I suggest starting a new thread here, where someone else could help you out better:

First off, you'll get a wider audience who may be able to solve your problem. Secondly, responses to you won't confuse the original poster with solutions that don't apply to them. And thirdly, you'll know for certain whether or not a response applies to you.

  • USB 3.0 Problem with WD MyPassport 1TB USB 3.0

    Hello all,
I have a Problem with my USB 3.0 Ports. I had an USB 2.0 external Harddrive which i used on my MacBook Pro 13" Mid 2012, but i needed a new one, so i bought a Western Digital MyPassport 1TB with USB 3.0. I also installed Tuxera NTFS because i bought the WD MyPassport in NTFS due to the fact that i use it on Mac aswell as on Windows. Now i read on the Apple Support page this:
How do I get the best performance from the USB 3 ports?
The first device you plug in will configure the port, so always connect USB 3 capable hubs or devices first.
What happens if I plug in a USB 2 device into the USB 3 port first?
If you plug in a USB 2 hub first, all devices connected or "daisy-chained" to that hub will operate up to the maximum transfer rate of USB 2 speed (480 Mbps).
I get now with my USB 3.0 MyPassport just write and read speed of an USB 2.0 device. (write/read +-35MB/s). I already tried my MyPassport on an Windows 8 PC with USB 3.0 Ports and there i get 85 MB/s read and 65 MB/s write. What is a huge diffrence.
I already tried to reset the USB 3.0 Ports with "Command-Option-P-R", but this also didn't solve the problem.
A friend of mine gets the same problem with an older version of the MyPassport (500GB) but also USB 3.0.
Does anyone has another idea what i could try to get USB 3.0 Speed on my Macbook Pro?
PS. I also installed the WD Turbo Drivers for Mac
PPS: I tested the Write and Read speed on my mac with xBench, Aja System Test and Blackmagic Disk Speed Test. All three gave nearly the same speed.

    Diabolusz wrote:
Thanks for the answer, very appreciated.
Well sometimes i got 30 MB/s and sometimes 60 MB/s. I don't know what's happening there. Running the Blackmagic Disk Speed Test shows 60 MB/s, 2 minutes later it shows 30 MB/s ... But my Mac identifys the external Harddrive as USB 3.0 device ("up to 5 Gbit/s")...
...I bought it on Amazon, and i also read the review there, and nearly everybody is talking of speeds between 85 and 110 MB/s. So i would say that those 60 MB/s are not normal....
To your link: I got exactly that external HDD, just with 1TB. Thank you, i'll read the article
When you check out the article, look at the transfer rates as the file sizes get smaller.
My Mac Pro doesn't have built in USB 3.0 support but I've added a PCIe card and now it does. Using Carbon Copy Cloner to clone a drive to an external USB 3.0 WD MyBook, which has a 3.5" HD inside, I can watch what files are being transferred in CCC while I watch the transfer rate using the Disk Activity graph in Disk Utility. If I'm writing to the beginning of the disk, the files can fly by at close to 130 MB/sec if they're large and maybe 15 MB/sec if a bunch of them are very small. If they're going, instead, to the last partition on the MyBook, which is at the center of the drive, the transfer rate might be cut almost in half. I've tried something similar with a Seagate GoFlex external, and in addition to what I observed with the MyBook, I also found that when the GoFlex started to overheat (a common occurrence since it contained a Barracuda XT with no ventilation), the transfer rate dropped like a rock. I can't tell from the pictures if your MyPassport has any ventilation but that could be an issue too and might explain your finding with the Blackmagic Disk Speed Test (assuming that test doesn't intentionally change file size during the test).
In any case, while the USB 3.0 interface can theoretically deliver up to 5 Gbit/s transfer rate, there's no hard disk out there which can run that fast, although some SSD's might. And that applies to both the HD in the MyPassport and the HD in your Mac. Indeed, unless you've got an SSD in your MacBook Pro, it's a 5400 RPM HD, so even though the interface it's connected to is 6.0 Gbps SATA, the HD can't begin to saturate it.
Considering all the variables at work, the real answer may be "you can't get there from here."

  • Problems with Lacie Drive

    Greetings all!
I am AGAIN having problems with my Lacie Big Disk. This thing has caused all sorts of problems on three separate occasions. This morning when I went to do some work in FCP, I noticed that I kept getting the "beachball" everytine I did anything. I went to the finder, and accessed the Big Disk from there, and got the same problem.
In the past Lacie had me do some things like repair permissions, etc. I did those things with no change. I then tried connecting through a FireWire 400 port. I did not have any free ports, so I connected to the port on another external drive. This seemed to work. However, when I did this, I suddenly got some REALLY strange results. All the files on the other drive kept failing! If I tried to open a photoshop file, I got errors. If I opened a DVD SP file, I got errors.
I turned off the Lacie drive, and suddenly the files on the other drive opened fine again!
    Anyone have any ideas/suggestions?

One suggestion is to get a PCI firewire card, and create another bus.
I did not have any free ports, so I connected to the port on another external drive.
Some drives don't play well with other firewire devices, and you seem to have every port involved with one or more devices

  • Laggy window performance with external monitor and USB hub after 8.1 -- possible cause found

I have the Yoga 11s which I've been using in conjunction with a Plugable UD-3900 for a few weeks now. Everything has worked very well, especially with external display, keyboard, mouse, and ethernet plugged into the hub.
After upgrading to 8.1 the other day, I began getting very noticeable window and mouse lag on the external monitor. Dragging windows would jump around, aero peek renders were slow, and the 'ribbon' screen saver would pixelate and was slow to wake up.
I installed the updated DisplayLink drivers, and also all the updated Lenovo drivers, but the problem remained. This morning I was trying different ideas and found something very interesting:
The configuration I use when attached to the UD-3900 is to have the keyboard flipped under and the display flipped up in the "stand" so I can use it as a second monitor. Of course when you do that, the Yoga turns off the keyboard & touchpad so they don't get accidentally pressed.
Just for kicks, I decided to flip the keyboard back around and try using the touchpad to move windows around on the extended monitor. Surprise: the laggy window dragging and rendering was gone. And then even more surprising, when going back to the wireless mouse while still in 'laptop' configuration, everything continued to work well -- no lag.
I thought maybe it was an incompatibility with the Logitech wireless USB keyboard/mouse itself, so I disconnected it. However, I also have a bluetooth Microsoft mouse, and it does the exact same thing: With laptop keyboard flipped back & disabled, window drags & aero peek renders lag. As soon as I activate the touchpad, lag is gone, and the BT mouse behaves normally.
So, it seems to be some kind of interaction between the automatic disabling of the Yoga's keyboard/touchpad and any external mouse. Has anyone else seen anything similar? Any ideas on how to solve so I can use the Yoga in the stand configuration?

Just to close the loop on this, I've determined that the cause of my issue is the Intel Dynamic Platform and Thermal Framework software/driver. I've disabled in the BIOS for now, and the machine is working very well. Will look for an update from Lenovo to address more definitively.

  • Problem with LaCie external HD

Have been using a LaCie 500 GB external HD hooked up to my iMac (OS X 10.8.2) via USB port for the past 4 months.  Use it with Time Machine.
Lately it has been disconnecting by itself ... and just a few days ago the backups started to fail too.  Using disk utility to check the LaCie says it needs to be repaired ... then says it can't be repaired, needs to be reformatted.
Tried changing it to another USB port (without doing anything else ot it) and now disk utility says it is ok and backups are working again.
Is this a problem with the USB port or with the external HD?  Any suggestions?

Thanks maurits ... I'll play around with it and try to figure it out.

  • Network problem with one particular iMac in a home network

I want to report a problem involving one particular iMac (2008 Al 24").
On my home network (Apple Airport Extreme and Express extensions, about five Macs and couple of iDevices), all other Macs can see and connect to each other as well as printing to the networked Brother printer without problem.
However, on one particular iMac, I can see all other Macs, can set Brother printer as default with green dot next to it in Print Preference Pane, but I can not connect to other macs, nor print to the printer. Meanwhile, the iMac can get on the internet without any problem. I checked Share Preference Pane and all settings are same as other macs.
The iMac used to work flawlessly until recently, and I first noticed the problem because I could not print, getting a message the printer can not be found (and the dots turn yellow for a while then went back to normal green). Then, I found neither the iMac, nor other macs on the network can connect to each other, even though I can see all of them in Finder.
I opened Apple Remote Network on my own mac, and I can see and connect all other shared macs, but this iMac's status showed not online, even though the IP adress is valid. As a results, no other macs can connect to the iMac, either. It seems to be a problem with the intranet only, not internet.
One more thing, about a month ago, the iMac popped out a warning about network name, saying the old name was in use (conflict) in the network, so I have to change it in Share Pane. Not sure if this is related to the intranet problem.
Reboot and repaired permission several times, no change. Hate to reinstall everything. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Another update:
For unknown reason, my iMac was suddenly back onto the home "intranet". It can be accessed by my MacBook Air through Finder Connect, and can also be seen by Apple Remote Desktop.
However, printing is still a problem while other macs have no problem printing to the same printer. Whenever I send a print task, either Word document, or other programs such as GraphicConverter image, the iMac tried to connect to the default printer, but failed, and wanted to try again in 30 seconds 9and continued to fail). Meanwhile, the green dot next to the printer selection turned to yellow in Preference Pane. But as soon as I cancel the print job, the printer status went back to normal green.
The printer is a Brother color laser HL-4070CDW, connected through wireless (g only), with it own DHCP but specific IP address. I printed out a setting for the printer and all looks normal, and all other macs can print to it without problem. Other macs can also get access to the printer profile, and check inks copy counts, etc, but the iMac cannot.
Only thing changed since last post was a new update for Apple Airport firmware (to 7.5.2 I think). So my problem is still half solved: can connect to other macs on the same network, but still not be able to print.
