Network shares can't be ejected? ("Ghost" share problems)

This topic is to try to solve a problem I'm having, as well as many of my Mac friends, when they use a network share, and it then cannot be unmounted.
Basically, there are servers no longer accessible, because we switched LANs, etc.
Symptoms: in the Finder, clicking on the "Eject" button next to the computer's name gives out a dialog telling "A disk on <share name> is in use. Try close applications. (approximately).
Of course, closing all applications doesn't have any effect, neither does relaunching the Finder.
In the Terminal, the command "mount" displays, among others:
//GUEST:@ines:139/Shared Docs em Vaio1 on /Volumes/Shared Docs em Vaio1 (smbfs, nodev, nosuid, mounted by xxx)
//GUEST@ines:139/Download on /Volumes/Download (smbfs, nodev, nosuid, mounted by xxx)
I tried umount "Shared Docs em Vaio1", as well as the other share, and yet it outputs "not currently mounted"
I then did lsof to check what files were open on these share, and the output starts with lsof: WARNING: can't stat() smbfs file system /Volumes/Shared Docs em Vaio1
Output information may be incomplete.
assuming "dev=2d000004" from mount table
lsof: WARNING: can't stat() smbfs file system /Volumes/Download
Output information may be incomplete.
assuming "dev=2d000005" from mount table
I've reached the end of my meager knowledge on this issue, which is minor (in the sense that performance is not affected), but relatively present nevertheless.
Of course it goes off when rebooting, but I want to be able to solve this problem without a reboot, so how can it be?

I don't know if it is the same with SMB shares, but with AFP ones I sometimes get this message when the share point is on my MacBook & it goes to sleep. The 'solution' -- such as it is -- is just to wait for the client Mac to notice the server isn't responding & pop up a server disconnect notice on the screen. Once you click the 'ok' button in that notice, the share point disappears from the Finder & no more messages about something on it being in use appear.
This notice can take several minutes to appear. I don't know of any way to speed up the process, or if it would be wise to try. I assume the long timeout is so that brief network outages are not problematic.

  • Cineman tools vs. afp network drive--can this really still be a problem?

I have a QNAP network attached storage device for my video clips, and Cinema Tools is throwing "error -40" when I attempt to conform a clip. Doing a search, I find this message in the archives: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=5433438
It is so old that replies are no longer permitted. Yet it seems to describe precisely the problem I am having. Is it really possible that in the past 3 years, either nobody else is trying to use network drives for video, or that Cinema Tools cannot perform the basic tasks that every other app seems to do with ease, such as write to a directory that enjoys full read+write permissions?

I do have a workaround, but it is such a hack that I cannot possibly believe it. If I trim my clips down to less than 2GB each (which, I can tell you, is an enormous PITA, because if there's one thing FCP does not want to do, it is to slice and dice master clips), then, miraculously, Cinema Tools will conform the resulting clips without complaint.
Could it possibly be that Cinema Tools is even more brain-damaged than that FAT filesystem, which itself is only limited to 4GB clips? Surely somebody in the world before me has attempted to conform files of more than trivial size.

You can't connect directly to the external drive, but should be able to use iTunes Home Sharing via the laptop.

  • Windows network setup: can't share on network and have each system access internet directly

Windows network setup would not let me set up my network so that I could both:see my other computers on the network and have them both connect directly to the internet. It wanted to set one up as a server.
Is it dangerous to arrange it that way?
If not, several people have told me it should be no problem to set up my network so that my computers can see each other and share, and yet still ahve access to the internet. I think this is enabled through DHCP?
Would someone mind lending me a hand?

  • Can't connect via Screen Share or Web Server, but can ping and ssh

Bit of an odd problem here.
My Mountain Lion Mac Pro (called "Trogdor" for convenience) is connected to my work university network. I can ping it from anywhere-- elsewhere on the network, from home behind a firewall. Can connect over ssh from everywhere. I can also connect to other computers (on the same network or at home behind a firewall) from Trogdor via ssh, Screen Sharing, etc.
But I can't Screen Share into Trogdor, and I can't connect to Trogdor's built-in web server, either system-wide (in /Library/WebServer) or for my username (~/Sites). (I can connect to the web server from Trogdor.)
Note that I can do both of these for other computers on the same network (same subnet, etc), so it's not a network issue. I can't do these from anywhere: same network or from home. I have this problem whether I use Trogdor's hostname or its IP address. (I can look up its hostname using the IP address with the "host" tool in Terminal, and vice versa.)
So it sounds like a port issue, right? Except I don't think I've ever messed with my port settings directly. How do I diagnose the problem? Should I scan my ports? Can I return port settings to default?
    Thanks!

  • Trying to access SMB share, can read but not write, I use the domain account to autenticate and domain account has access to the share. its a samba domain and im a Windows Admin by trade.

    I have two  I Mac's Intel i7 models.
I have some problems getting them to write files to SMB shares.
The domain user account I use when requested to enter when i first try to connect to the share seems to go though without a problem and it presents me with a list of mounts (shares) I select one and the folder opens, I can read files and copy them but I cant write to any of the folders.
I have also mounted the network locatiosn to a folder from the terminal while also specifying a user name and password to use but this also doesnt allow the specified user account to write data to the share.
I have confirmed the user account can write to the share by having the user do so from a windows box.
any help from any of you mac guys would be great!!!!
Im a windows fan boy / Windows Server based Network Administrator and am slowly becomming a fan of your macs (mainly due to the Unix terminal access letting me realise there is more control to be had than most haters would lead you to believe).
    Peace Out

I should add that I originally formatted the problematic drive for FAT32 from the Mac, but then the WinXP computer couldn't see the drive when I plugged it in directly via USB. That's why I went with Seagate's utility to format it.

  • Can't connect to samba share via VPN

    Hello all,
I am looking for an answer for few days now and still can't manage to fix it. I found two workarounds in the meantime, but it's not what I want!
    My case:
Cisco vpn on one side and Mac vpn client (native). I can connect alright, can't only mount samba share. Via console I got invalid argument error, but when I go to finder > go to server it's just processing (no error). Left it for few mintes and nothing happened. I have a windows on virtual machine and I can mount samba alright. One more thing. I created a new user, logged in and it works! ****.
Can anyone say where should I look? What can be the problem on my old account? Don't want to switch and change all the things now, there must be a way to fix it...
    Hope someone can help
    Thanks in advance,
    Regards,
    Jake

    Hi Richard,
Thanks for interest. It's a windows share 2003 smb. It's a company network. As I said its not the case of VPN itself.
About the new user, that's a yes, it's same username as my samba share name, but even tho it's the same it needs my authentication. For the more, when I am with my mac at work and connect via cable I can access everything alright from my old account.
How can VPN block me when I can access it from my windows virtual (which is not the same as my work username). I can access it from new user, I would say its not the case of VPN blocking me there, I guess it's something I have changed over the years with my previous VPN settings.
I have direct access to VPN and I know firewall is off right now as we are testing it, so its for sure my mac settings...
Question is where do I find it:)

The easiest way would be to use Back to My Mac, but that will only work if the server is a Mac running OS X 10.7 or later and you have the cooperation of the network administrator.

  • I can't see my Mac shares from Windows

I've read threads here saying people can't access windows shares from their mac using Leopard. Well, I'm having this problem too...AND I'm also have this problem the other way. From my XP machine, I CANNOT access or even see my Mac shares like I used to in Tiger. I've tried messing with all the settings on the Mac side, and nothing works! ARGH! So frustrated!
Before, I could access my mac shares from my XP machine by typing in my username and password, that's what I'm trying to do, but no matter what I do, I can't get my XP machine to see my mac shares over the network. Can someone help me out please? I'm almost to a point where I'm desperate!

Okay, I give up. I can see my XP PC in Finder sans firewall, with all of my Mac exposed, and cannot see my Mac from the XP PC at all, no matter what I do. I've spent hours on this today and after reading and trying everything, I realize there's no way to do it. There's no safe way too look into my PC, and no possible way too look into my Mac. I can't believe Apple made me believe that I could do a simple thing like network my PC and my Mac.
I'm so utterly disappointed--you want something to "just work", and there are 500 options and settings and nothing works. I want to love Apple so much, but after spending all night trying, I realize it just doesn't work. Too bad, I really wanted to use this Mac at work.

  • Can Apple let us to share our Notes with others so that they can also use their own Notes app to edit and view the shared notes?

This function would be tremendously useful for students sharing class notes or for family members or friends sharing daily-life notes.
Similarly, it would be wonderful if we can share Reminders, so that if I have a grocery list on my reminder and I can share it with my husband so that he can follow it on his way home.
Same suggestion for Photos (sharing an album with a friend).
Same suggestion for sharing documents so that a friend can view and/or edit the same document.
Perhpahs sharing with friends through iCloud is one way to go, but may be Apple engineers can have better solutions.

Submit your feedback directly to Apple using the appropriate link on the Feedback page:
    http://www.apple.com/feedback
Meanwhile, there are lots of programs that will let you do the things you want to do. Evernote lets you share notes. Remember The Milk lets you share reminders. DropBox and GoogleDocs let you share documents. Picasa lets you share photos. Those are just some examples.

If you each have separate iCloud accounts with different IDs, you can add the other person's account to your device(s) by going to Settings>Mail,Contacts,Calendars>Add Account>iCloud and signing in with their ID.  These "secondary accounts" will sync mail, contacts, calendars, reminders and notes.
