Network startup fails every time since 6/9 update [SOLVED]

I use the netctl method to start the network on my various machines (with static IP addresses) and since doing full system upgrades on 6/9, which included an update to systemd, the network fails to start on bootup, every time. I have to start the network manually after logging in.
I just read a post about a similar systemd-related problem (involving a new service) from which I quote: "yet another bunch of races to accompany the ones that have pestered the arch-linux bootup since that festering pile of race-ridden cs-student pipedream called systemd has been adopted into it."
Race conditions in network startup have been troublesome for me since systemd appeared. It's been quite some time now and the problems keep appearing. Much as I like Arch, I may have to abandon it, because this kind of basic unreliability is not acceptable.

Well, I did some more work on this, and I have a bit of egg on my face, with an excuse. You can decide for yourself whether you think it's a good one.
I run multiple machines that I use for different circumstances, e.g., travel. I rsync my home directory when moving from one machine to another. They are all set up identically, with Arch. To avoid confusion about which machine has the latest changes in my home directory, the scripts I use for rsync-ing and my .bash_profile send emails to my gmail address, so I have an audit trail of what I have done. In the past, I *have* experienced systemd troubles (and know that because the network didn't come up reliably and there was discussion by others on this forum of problems similar to mine, with patches for the systemd scripts) and the first symptom I saw was the inability of my .bash_profile to send my 'I just logged in on system X' email. Since the system update yesterday, I have been seeing this symptom. My mistake was assuming, instead of verifying, that the network had not come up, and just starting the network manually with netctl (there was no error message from netctl that I was starting an already-started network profile). My confusion was abetted by the fact that there was a systemd update yesterday, according to pacman. But, in fact, when I realized I was making an unwarranted assumption and actually checked, I found that the network had come up and I now believe this is not a systemd issue.
I think the issue is with mailx (mail), which also got updated yesterday. The mail I send requires authentication by the smtp server I'm using, and my scripts provide that, using the smtp-auth-* options to mail. This worked until yesterday. Looking at the mail man page, it appears that mail configuration and these options are about to change with version 15. The current version is 14.7 and purports to support both the old and new-style configuration and options. To turn on the new style, you supposedly invoke an option, -v15-compat, which is off by default. The options I'm using are not v15 compatible, but should work, since I have not provided the option to turn on v15 support. But it appears they do not.
I will mark this thread SOLVED, since my original diagnosis was wrong.

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
If your problem persists get yourself a micro USB cable (sold separately), you can restore your Apple TV from iTunes:
Remove ALL cables from Apple TV. (if you don't you will not see Apple TV in the iTunes Source list)
Connect the micro USB cable to the Apple TV and to your computer.
Reconnect the power cable (only for Apple TV 3)
    Open iTunes.
Select your Apple TV in the Devices list, and then click Restore.

    Hi there navicin79,
You may find the troubleshooting steps in the articles below helpful. The first thing I would try is reinstalling iTunes as outlined in the first article.

  • IDVD Hangs every time since most recent updates

my computer installed the updates as usual when i get a software update. i ran disk utility and it showed a lot of ACL found but not expected and Warning: SUID file has been configured but will not be repaired. The Apple guy at the genius bar said this was normal with Leopard. i don't know what the last two updates were, i can't remember how to recheck what i did, but now, iDVD will not open. it'll bounce on the dock, then hang up. i just burned 2 dvds last night form iMovie. someone help please...

Yeah - well to be precise, it renders the menus (stage 1) and then moves on to rendering the slideshow (61 photos) and then hangs at that point. This is a complete system hang - I can't kill any applications, nothing fixes this apart from a hard reset.
I ended up going back to a 6.0 Theme, and it worked first time - reading another thread here others are suggesting it's bugs in 7.0 Themes, and iDVD 08.... I'd believe it given the fix of 6.0 Theme.

  • Import from iphoto fails every time.

Import from iphoto fails every time.

It should not be a serious flaw, since this something that you only do ONCE. You don't want to use both organizer and iphoto. You'll have two sets of photos with no knowledge of each other. Import from iphoto is not meant to be a regular use item, only for the one time after you've decided organizer is what you prefer. It's fine to make a small test catalog while you decide whether iphoto or organizer suits you better, but to keep on using both is going to make you crazy in short order.

  • IPhone 5 iOS 7.1.4 Call failed every time when the other person hung up before me

iPhone 5 iOS 7.0.4 says Call failed every time when the other person hung up before me,
Is there anything I can do to about that please?

    Hey there Yonidawit,
It sounds like you are are getting a message saying that the call failed, when the person you are talking to hangs up. I have a few things to recommend here. First close all the open apps:
iOS: Force an app to close
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht5137
    Double-click the Home button.
Swipe left or right until you have located the app you wish to close.
Swipe the app up to close it.
When you have done that restart the phone and test it out again:
iOS: Turning off and on (restarting) and resetting
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1430
If that does not resolve it, try resetting your network settings:
Reset network settings by tapping Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings. Note: This will reset all network settings including:
previously connected Wi-Fi networks and passwords
    recently used Bluetooth accessories
    VPN and APN settings
From: iOS: Troubleshooting Wi-Fi networks and connections
              http://support.apple.com/kb/ts1398
If the issue persists, I would next backup your device to iTunes, and restore it:

not able to make outgoing calls in iphone4. Regularly i face this problem, at the same time i receive incoming call, can do net surfing, can access email and sms, only outgoing calls get failed every time. please answer to solve this problem

    Good day Sidharth Namrta,
It sounds like you are unable to make any calls, but you can recieve them, and everything else seems to work fine. I recommend you use the troubleshooting in the following article to help you get that resolved, named:
iPhone: Troubleshooting issues making or receiving calls
Follow the steps below to resolve this issue. Please test after each step.
Toggle airplane mode: Tap Settings > Enable Airplane Mode, wait five seconds, then turn off airplane mode.
    Check your phone settings:
Check your Do Not Disturb settings: Tap Settings > Do Not Disturb.
Check for any blocked phone numbers: Tap Settings > Phone > Blocked.
See if Call Forwarding is turned on: Tap Settings > Phone > Call Forwarding.
Ensure that your software is up to date:
Check for a carrier settings update.
Check for an iOS software update.
Note: Some updates may require a Wi-Fi connection.
If the iPhone has a SIM card, reseat the SIM card.
If the iPhone 4 or iPhone 4s is on the Verizon network, dial *228 from the iPhone and select option 2 to update the Preferred Roaming List (PRL). The PRL determines the cellular towers the phone uses for cellular service, selecting those with the best signal strength.
Reset the network settings: Tap  Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings.
Try to make or receive calls in another location.
Attempt to isolate to one network band:
If you're having the issue on LTE, disable LTE, if possible, and try again.
If you're having the issue on 3G/4G, disable 3G/4G, if possible, and try again.
Contact the carrier to check the following:
Your account is properly configured to use the specific iPhone that has the issue.
There are no localized service outages.
    Your account doesn't have a billing-related block.
Your calls don't have errors on the carrier system.
    Restore the phone as new.
If the above steps don't resolve the issue, go to an Apple Retail Store, carrier, Apple Authorized Reseller, or contact AppleCare to send the phone in for service.
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
    All the very best,
    Sterling

  • Network assistant launches every time I restart

Dealing With The Resume Feature of Lion
Managing Mac OS X Lion's application resume feature.
If you shutdown your computer you should get a dialog asking if you want applications to resume on the next startup. Simply uncheck the box to prevent that from occurring. Open General preferences and uncheck the option to Restore windows when quitting and re-opening apps. You can also install a third-party utility to control resume features on individual applications: RestoreMeNot or Application State Cleaner.
It is possible to completely stop the Resume feature although I'm unconvinced that it is that annoying. Nevertheless see the following:
If you have not yet done so you must first make your /Home/Library/ folder visible. Open the Terminal application in the Utilities folder. At the prompt paste the following command line:
    chflags nohidden ~/Library
Press RETURN. Quit the Terminal application.
In the Finder navigate to the /Home/Library/Saved Application State/ folder. Delete the contents of the folder. Back up to the /Home/Library/ folder. Select the Saved Application State folder. Press COMMAND-I to open the Get Info window. In the Sharing and Permissions panel at the bottom click on the lock icon and authenticate. Set each of the listed entries to Read Only. Close the Get Info window.
Quit all open programs except the Finder (this is very important.) Next, navigate to the /Home/Library/Preferences/ByHost/ folder. Look for a .plist file with "com.apple.loginwindow." in the file name followed by some numbers in hexadecimal. Select the file. Press COMMAND-I to open the Get Info window and in the Sharing and Permissions panel click on the lock icon and authenticate. Set each of the listed entries to Read Only. Close the Get Info window. If you also find a file with the same filename but with a last extension of ".lockfile," then you should delete it.
The above should eliminate the Resume feature system-wide. Note that any future system updates or upgrades will likely undo these changes. You will then need to repeat this procedure assuming there are no major changes in OS X related to it.

  • Backups Fail Every Time

So I am wanting to back up my MacBook to time capsule. I have time capsule all configured and the drive shows up just fine to all of the computers on my network. When I go into time machine preferences, the disc shows up so I add it. Last night I plugged my computer in over ethernet first before doing the first backup. I went to bed and woke up the next morning with an error saying "Unable to complete backup. An error occurred while writing to the directory" or something similar to that. The disk image (sparsebundle) was still mounted on my desktop and I am unable to unmount it without restarting. I restarted and tried again and it said it was unable to mount the image. I then deleted the image to start over and also excluded lots of stuff just to see if i can get anything backed up. It creates the image and starts copying stuff over and gives me the same error I got the first time.
What is causing it to fail each time?
    Thanks!

Mine is doing the same thing - it backs up about 50% of the way through, then fails with the same message. It was working for a while, now it's stuck and fails every time, and I haven't found a way to get backups to work again. Prior to this, it had occasional errors while trying to access data, but this is a new behavior. The Time Capsule has been a miserable experience so far...
I've pretty much given up on assuming my data is actually safely backed up with this product.

I would say to start by looking on their web site... unfortunately, that appears to be dead.
Based on the horrible ratings on the App Store (1 star for the current version), I'm not surprised it doesn't work well.

Thanks for your reply Michalo. I am in India and here Apple care does not work on Sundays. I have been without my phone for the entire day. Perhaps tomorrow will bring some respite. There is not solution to "error (-1)" on any forum it seems. I found one forum which suggested use of Tiny Umbrella. Any idea about that?
