Networking 10.3.9 w/ WinXP

Hi,
I'm having a devil of a time trying to network my G5 running 10.3.9 with a Windows XP machine. I want to be able to share my 2nd internal HD with the windows machine. Through the Win machine I can get on the Startup HD on the Mac, but see no option to allow entry into the 2nd Drive, "Audio"...
When trying to access the Win machine from the Mac, I'm prompted for a user name and password...I enter the username, but there is no password to be entered, and I wasn't allowed entry. Even after creating a password, I still get no access. I disable the firewall from SP2 on the Win machine...but still no luck.
Do I need to upgrade to Tiger instead for this to work? Or is there something else I'm missing?
Thanks!
Daniel

  • Vista 64bit can't find driver for networked Laserjet 3390.

I originally posted the following in the wrong section so I posted a retraction there and am reposting in this networking section. ===== I have an all-in-one Laserjet 3390 printer. It's connected to my WinXP Pro PC via USB and works fine as a printer. I don't use the scanner since I have a Canonon scanner that I use. I bought a Dell Studio 1537 laptop that came with Vista Home Premium 64bit installed. I networked the laptop to the WinXP PC via ethernet cables and a Belkin router. I can transfer files between both PCs with no problems. Now I'm trying to print on the 3390 from the Laptop. When using the Vista laptop, I can see the 3390 on the network. But when I try to connect to it, a window pops up saying: ***** The server for the 'HP LaserJet 3390 Series PCL6' printer does not have the correct printer driver installed. If you want to search for the proper driver, click OK. Otherwise, click Cancel and contact your network administrator or original equipment manufacturer for the correct printer driver.***** So I selected Vista 64bit on the HP website and downloaded the Universal Print Driver HPUPD47PCL664.exe. Unzipped that file in a folder on the Vista laptop. Then connected to the 3390 printer again from the Vista laptop as I did before and when the pop up occured, I browsed to the folder that contains the unzipped UPD driver. I see several .inf files which is what the install program wants but when I click OK, a pop up says: ***** Windows cannot locate a suitable printer driver. Contact your administrator for help locating and installing a suitable driver. ***** Any ideas?
    This question was solved.

mrlaw10,  You do not need the HP software since your printer is already on the network.
First, do a Windows Update.  Next,
    1. Make sure the printer is turned on and connected to your network. Verify that you can access the printer's internal web page by browsing to its IP address before continuing.
    2. Click >> Start >> Control panel >> Devices and Printers.
    3. Click the Add a printer
    4. Select Local printer
    5. Select Create a new port and select Standard TCP/IP Port and click Next button.
    6. Under Device type, select TCP/IP Device. Under Hostname or IP address, enter the printer's host name (found on the printer's network configuration report the generated above). Click Next.
If you get a message about Additional Port Information Required, then the printer was not found using the host name. You can go back and retry or using the printer's IP address instead of the host name.
    7. Select HP or Hewlett-Packard from the list of manufacturers and select and select your printer model. Click Next.
If your printer model was not listed, then select Have Disk, browse the HP CD that came with your printer and select the first file that starts with hp and ends with inf. Click Open then OK. Select your printer model. Click Next.
    8. If you are asked, use the currently installed driver.
    9. It will ask for the Printer name -- enter a new name or use the existing one. This will be the name of the printer that you select from other applications.
    10. You may be asked to share the printer. Make a choice and click Next.
    11. The Print Test Page box appears. Go ahead and print it.
    12. Click Finish.

  • WRT54G as AP in Windows network

I have a Windows 2003 Small Business Server running as DHCP host in a small office network. Connected workstations are WinXP, Win2000, and Mac OS X clients.
I bought a Linksys WRT54G wireless router that I want to act as a secure wireless access point, with the Win2k3 server remaining responsible for handing out IP addresses.
    1. What changes do I need to make to the settings within the WRT54G?
    2. What connections do I use when hooking up the WRT54G to the LAN? (Let's assume the wireless router will be located in someone's cube with a standard ethernet drop in the wall; it's not feasible to locate the Linksys near the inbound DSL modem or Win2k3 server)
Assume the Win2k3 server is 192.168.0.200 and all IP addresses it hands out are in the range 192.168.0.1 through 192.168.0.150. I can modify the DHCP settings in Win2k3 to give the Linksys wireless router a static IP address (since I know it's MAC address).
    Thanks,
    Steve

hi.....on the router u will need to disable the DHCP....and connect the WRT to the 2k3 server to one of the LAN ports of the router....do not use the internet port....this should get u up and running in no time

  • Best new MAC-PC Mixed Network

My wife, the artist, wants to get a new iMac and share a network with my WinXP PCs. TC might be a nice solution. However, from what I read, there seems to be doubt about some connections. We want to follow the Apple model and can wait until such a model is published or otherwise blessed by the mfg. It is my hope that this thread will follow developments in that direction.
    Requirements:
    1. Reliable home air network mixed Mac X, & PC WinXP Desktop & Laptop.
    2. Shared disc with access from both systems.
    3. Backup for both systems that is air connected in a secure place.
    Solution?:
    1. TC with internal disc shared and USB attached printer shared.
    2. Client TC with internal TM disc for Mac backup and USB attached disc for PC backup.

    So, this is my network:
Two notebooks on Vista connecting with WiFi and one desktop computer with wired connection.
Router: Apple airport extreme, bought a week ago.
    MFP Canon Pixma MP160
Storage: external HDD in a cas
MFP nad HDD connected to AE through USB hub.
result: everything is working perfectly (with printing service only)
If I understood you correctly you wish to add two external hdd.
You can try to attach two NAS device to AE through LAN and that should work.
AE is a great router for those who wish to have reliable network without much to think about it.If you wish to really control your network I would go with D-Link dir-655 or the upcoming dir-855 (works on dual band).
If you ask why did I bought it then, the answer is: for a little more money I got printer server built in AE (example, AE is 179 euro and dir-655+printer server is around 250 euro, also d-link built in USB is useless.

  • Lv 6.1 crashing

    Hi everyone,
I'm experiencing a rather annoying (and increasingly frequent) problem....
I have a program using several different modules for instrument communication (Spectrometer, filter wheel, monochromator etc) which has been running fine for a year or so.
Recently, I have problems with LV bombing out in the middle of a measurement.  No error messages from LV, a system-level crash.  I'm not used to this kind of thing.
Following pictures are details of ONE type of crash (it has two or three different "forms").
The dialogs appear in this order:
    Details on my system:
I'm using a dell (I've seen reports of problems regarding this before....), but the crashes happened on an old no-name beige box before also.
The VIs are saved with diagram on a network drive (Both PCs using WinXP Pro with up-to-date patches).
I am calling a DLL for a spectrometer interface, but testing this code on its own for several hours cannot generate a crash.
All other functions are built-in G.
It seems kind of fond of crashing in the middle os a gauss-fitting routine I've written (Heavily modified Levenberg routine).  This code has also worked without any problems since over a year.
I am using 3 RS-232 ports (Filter wheel, Spectrometer, Linear stage) and 2 USB ports (Spectrometer via DLL, Relay via Command-line parameters).
The crashes seem random with no single module causing the problems (except for the affinity mentioned above).  Sometimes I can even finish a complete measurement series (oooh) whereas sometimes I only get through 10 or 30 or 50%.
I'm at a loss currently.  I've looked at as much of the code as I can, and I can't see anything wrong.  I've even tried copying the code to new VIs, but this hasn't stopped the crashes.
    Please help....
    Shane.

I know 6.1 isn't supported any more, but It's been rock solid until now.....
Either way, it looks like we'll be upgrading to 8.2 soon, so I suppose I'll just hope that the errors will go away then.......
I was hoping that the error message could give SOME insight as to whether the LV core, Windows or a device driver was the problem.
    I suppose I'll never know......

PS: Can someone at least tell me what "Runtime Error 217" is?

  • Setting a (corporate) Persona for all users

    Hi,
I've designed a corporate Firefox persona and would like to either
    a) set it as the default persona when a user first opens Firefox
    b) roll it out to all existing users of Firefox where they have not had this persona applied before
I'm on a Windows Active Directory network and all clients are WinXP/Win7 and have Firefox 3.6 installed.
Does anyone have an idea of how I can achieve this?

You can do that for new users via a file user.js in the default template folder for new profiles.

The other day, however, I did run VBoxHeadless whose output at the time made no sense to me because it was before most of my research, so maybe I should try that again...

I should have tried that again. I'll figure it out now. Sorry for wasting your time.

  • No %%Bounding Box: Comment in header!

    Hi,
Since I recently upgraded to 10.4.9 I am encountering problems with printing. Some seemed to be related to outdated printer drivers and things then worked well for some time. However, since two days ago, I am always getting an error message when printing to an HP LJ 1200:
"No %%Bounding Box: Comment in header!"
The printer has been installed via HP JetDirect/IP-Printer. I am getting the same error message when printing from any application; Word, Adobe, Camino, etc, and when printing the preview. Documents are not sophisticated, just plain text and figures.
I reinstalled the printer, with no avail. If the printer creates some output, it takes a very long time and the printout then consists of three to four lines of numbers and letters.
I do not have problems (yet?) when printing to a Lexmark C510; everything works fine. So, printing is not completely disabled, fortunately.
It seems that others have encountered the same problem, and there was a similar thread (unsolved though) in the Tiger discussion group. I really would be grateful if somebody could provide me with a tip how to solve this problem.
Second, in the System Settings - Sharing, I can not disable Printer Sharing. Clicking in the box or the Stop button has no effect. The same is true for Print&Fax; I can uncheck the first box (share printer with other computers), but when I reopen, the box is checked again.
Any helpful hints will be appreciated!

    iMac G4, 1.25 MHz, 768 MB   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

Exactly the same problem and error message w/ my HP LJ 1015(network printing from Mac to WinXP).
greg: how to re-update the combo update? I have downloaded the standalone comobo update from Apple website, do I need to go back to 10.4.8(if so how?) then install the combo update or it'll be fine just install the downloaded update on the current 10.4.9 system? Thank you.

  • RVS4000 V2 locks up every 1 - 2 days

Hello everybody! My brand new RVS4000 V2 replaced old USR8003 router in the same home network. The USR8003 did not require any user intervention for years. Running RVS4000 in the same network and with the same LAN IP address (192.168.123.254) requires power cycling every day or two. The router is connected to Motorola SB6120 cable modem. The local network includes a few PCs (WinXP SP3), two LinkSys APs, Roku, DirecTV receiver and a few WiFi devices. The router runs in Gateway mode with DHCP server enabled. Most of the devices have static IP addresses within DHCP address range. When the router locks up, it looks like a normal situation because the LEDs are lit the same way as usual indicationg ports activities. When it is locked, the RESET button has no effect as well as web and telnet interfaces. The only option is to power cycle the router, which restores the working condition until another lock up. The following actions have been taken:
    upgraded firmware to V2.0.3.2
    Restored factory defaults
Disabled IPS, QoS, most of Firewall optional functions
Moved statis IP addresses in the DHCP address range
It does not look like a harware issue, but rather a software bug. Right now I am running the Syslog server to correlate lock ups with the modem reboots (Yes, it happens from time to time, but did not afect USR8003). I cannot find any information from Cisco documentation about static IP addreses on the LAN and if they have to be outside the DHCP adderss range. Any help is appreciated.

    Hi Tom,
Thank you for your comments. I will move static clients out of the DHCP range and see what happens. So far, that was the biggest change I made since the last lock up. The RVS4000 ran for 2 days, 20:54:41 hours already. During this time there were three modem reboots, therefore, I do not think lock ups are related to the modem. When you said "upsteam", did you mean WAN or something else? The thing is that LinkSys WAPs have two MACs addresses associated with the same IP.address. Does this count as an IP conflict within the LAN? The WAPs have statis IP addresses.
    Thank you,
    Boris.

  • WinXP to Mac - The Specified Network Name is No Longer Available

    Hello,
I cannot figure out, for the life of me, why our WinXP machine won't connect to our Mac.
Mac: Powerbook G4 running OS X 10.4.7, WIndows File Sharing is active and an account is selected which will use Windows sharing.
PC: Windows XP Home Edition, SP2. A file share is active.
We're both using wireless connections via a D-Link DI-624 router. Both the Mac and PC are on the same workgroup and have different machine names. Both are on the same subnet.
The Mac can connect to Windows XP share directories and printers without a problem. The Windows XP machine can browse to the Mac's web page when the Personal Web Sharing on the Mac is active. The XP machine can even ping the Mac's address with no packet losses.
However, when the XP machine tries to connect to the Mac (via Map Network Drive or from the command line) using \\machine\share, we get the following error: "The Specified Network Name is No Longer Available". The Mac's machine name shows up when we do a search for computers, but gives us that same error when we double click on it. Furthermore, the printer name does not show up in the printer list, although the Mac's machine name does.
Any ideas? Any more information needed?
Thanks a lot. This problem is driving me insane. :/
    Scott

I finally figured it out! It had to do with the smb.conf file and a missing file. Here's what happened (for people with future problems like this):
o Looked at the log.smbd file (in /var/log/samba) and saw errors about not being able to convert from CP0. Searched online and found (from http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=2490054&#2490054) that I needed to change 'dos charset = 0' to 'CP850'...
o In Terminal, did a 'sudo pico /etc/smb.conf' and changed the line "dos charset = 0" to "dos charset = CP850"
o Still didn't work, and found from the log.smbd file that the convert msg was gone, but was replaced with a "Failed to open /private/var/db/samba/secrets.tdb" msg.
o I saw that the directory (at the ..../samba level) didn't exist, so, from Terminal, I used sudo to create the /private/var/db/samba directory (sudo mkdir /private/var/db/samba), and did a 'sudo touch secrets.tdb' to create the file, then 'sudo chown root:wheel secrets.tdb' to assign the correct user/group.
Used 'sharepoints' program to create shares and voila! It works great now!
To share my printer, I'm using bonjour, which is a free printer/etc. sharing program from Apple for those with OS X 10.4 (Tiger) and WinXP/2000/2003 machines (http://www.apple.com/macosx/features/bonjour/).

  • Bootcamp: WinXP: Network initialization takes too much time

    Hey
I've set up a BootCamp partition on my Macbook 6,1: Windows XP Professional 32-bit SP3 (up-to-date).
Its a fresh installation, with latest BootCamp drivers.
From start on, the network-initialization takes too much time:
    - Windows boots up
    - Enter password
    - Desktop appear
    - after 2-3 minutes, the network symbols appear in the taskbar.
If I open the System Control panel and want to enter the networking-devices it loads until network is really initiated.
I also can't browse to any web-site (through IE).
So, it seems that something blocks or prevent the networking from fast start-up.
I've tried to disable WLAN, same problem
If I disconnect all connections (no LAN-cable, no WLAN configured) its still the same problem.
Does anybody have a similar issue?

You can read: I have installed BootCamp (Lions one said no, but I have an MacBook 6,1 - Yep, this one was shipped with Snow Leopard, so I have the "old" BootCamp drivers with XP-drivers on my Install-disc.).
The BootCamp drivers from the Mac OSX 10.6 CD are installed and updated through Apple-Update.
    So, WinXP should be supported?

    Hi @OHIMATAS,
I see by your post that you are unable to network the printer to the Windows XP computer, but the Windows 7 computer is connected. I can help you with this.
Make sure the Windows XP computer is connected to the correct network name, not a Guest network either.
Print a configuration page to get the printer's IP address.
    Printing a Configuration Page.
Try and access the printer's Embedded Web Server on the Windows XP computer.
Type the IP address into your web browser's address bar. (Internet Explorer)
    Did it load the webpage?
If you can't access the printer's EWS, then check the IP address on the computer to see if the first 3 sets of numbers match the printer's IP. They have to match to be on the same network.
Go to start, type run in the search box, type in cmd, then type ipconfig.
    Check the IPV4 address.
Now check the IPV4 address for the printer.
Do the first 3 sets of numbers match?
    Try and ping the printer.
In the same window, type ping printers IP address (space between ping and IP address)
    What are the results?
Run the add printer wizard through printers and faxes, if you were able to access the printer's EWS.
Please provide in detail the results if you are still having issues.
    Have a nice day!
