Networking 101 to a pc based domain

Newbie here,
Can anyone teach me or send a link to a step by step instruction guide for understanding mac OSX networking and setting up a connection to a corporate domain? Screenshots would be great. Remote desktop? How to add to domain? etc

I think I understand that you have the printer somehow connected to the router? However, I thought the printer was a USB device. What happens you connect the printer to a PC USB port and turn on printer sharing?
As best I could determine at Belkin's web site is that your router doesn't even have a USB port. Exactly how is the printer connected to the router?
What happens if the printer is connected to the Mac's USB port directly? Does it work then?
Here are some articles that may help:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301768
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301397
http://www.ifelix.co.uk/tech/index.html
http://www.macwindows.com/
The physical setup should be:
1. Cable or DSL service line connects to IN port on the modem.
2. The modem's WAN port is connected via Ethernet (CAT5) cable to the WAN port on the router.
3. Each Ethernet device (each computer) is connected to the router's LAN ports by Ethernet cable.
The router should be configured to have its DHCP server activated (this is usually the default configuration.) Each computer should have its network preferences configured to use DHCP.
Most routers issue IP addresses in the 192.168.xxx.xxx range. If you have a valid connection between the computer and router then the computer's IP address will be in this range. If the IP address begins with 169.xxx.xxx.xxx, then it's an invalid address and means the computer is not connecting properly to the router. The router should get its IP address from your ISP service.
After all the hardware connections have been setup you should configure the computers' network preferences then turn everything off for at least one minute. Then in sequence first turn on the modem and wait until the status lights indicate a connection to the ISP; next turn on the router and wait until its status light indicates communication with the modem; last turn on the computers.

    Dear All,
We are having an infrastructure setup of around 500 client computers managed through group policy.
Recently the domain controllers have been migrated from Windows Server 2003 to Server 2008 R2.
Since this account requires extremely strict environment, we need to figure the solution for restricting the users from access anything locally.

You cannot block explorer.exe when you do not replace the shell - the
desktop you see effectively IS explorer.exe...
Your requirement sounds like you need a custom shell:

  • Can Management Studio connect to a server that is on the same network but not on the same domain?

Should management studio be able to connect to an instance of an sql server that is on the same network but not on the same domain?  I am trying to have it do so but am unsuccessful, so to continue to troubleshoot what the issue might be I need to know
whether I am embarking on an exercise in futility.

    Hello,
    That's your issue!
Since you're attempting to use Windows Authentication you'll need to start the SSMS process under the domain credentials of the domain account that has access to that SQL Server. Otherwise windows is going to send you local user token which is going to quickly
be rejected as your local computer user account is not the correct domain account.
You can do this by either using shift+right-click run as different user or from the command line using RunAs /user.
In either case, if you want to use Windows Authentication you'll need to run the SSMS process as that domain user so that you can pass a valid security token.
    Edit:
I read that backwards... If it's not on any domain (or member of a workgroup) you'll have a really hard time in using windows authentication as you're limited to LOCAL users on that machine. Thus you could really only use windows auth if you were logged
in locally on that server. I'd either setup a SQL Login for this or join it to a domain.

  • How to select domain OU for "Apply Network Settings" task sequence step, based on the ip address.

We are finally getting ready to migrate from SCCM 2007 to 2012 R2.
Our current setup has 5 site servers with five OSD setups with boot media and Windows 7 task sequences.
I want to move all that to one site with a single OSD W7 task sequence.
The current, "apply network settings", step adds the workstation to one of five different  OUs. The same with the "apply windows settings" step, we have five local admin passwords for five regions around the state.
I thought I might run five versions of each step and add a condition to each one that would only run if the machine was on the right subnet. Or the right Boundary group or maybe the right active directory site.
Currently I'm creating five boundary groups that I hope to detect by running a power script get-CmBoundaryGroup. Then apply the results maybe as a task sequence variable in the task steps options/Add Conditions.
Anybody have a better approach. Or alternate plan.

Are you integrated with MDT? If so, you can use customsettings.ini to put machines into specific OUs based on the DefaultGateway.

  • Deploy SCOM 2012 R2 Agents to Domain Servers on Perimeter Network using SCOM Gateway on different Domain

Hi, I have a bit odd situation on a SCOM 2012R2 deployment.
I have a MS on the internal network, and a Gateway Server on the perimeter network. Each server is connected to different Active Directory Forests and there are no trust relationships between them. I configured the communication between the two using certificates.
I have already connected some servers through the Gateway using certificates because there are on Workgroups, they are already approved on the MS and reporting their status.
However, I have some servers that are member servers of the internal AD domain but are located on the perimeter network.
So I've tried to configure one of them for testing to connect to the Gateway Server using a certificate using manual agent installation. Initially it didn't report on the SCOM, but then I ran the get-scompendingmanagement and saw that it showed there,
so I ended up approving the agent using Powershell and then it was reported on the Console as "Not Monitored"
First the agent was running as local system and then tried using a local admin account on the server, neither options have worked.
    I get the following errors:
The OpsMgr Connector connected to scomgateway.externaldomain.com, but the connection was closed immediately after authentication occurred.  The most likely cause of this error is that the agent is not authorized to communicate with the server, or the
server has not received configuration.  Check the event log on the server for the presence of 20000 events, indicating that agents which are not approved are attempting to connect.
For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.
OpsMgr was unable to set up a communications channel to scomgateway.externaldomain.com and there are no failover hosts.  Communication will resume when scomgateway.externaldomain.com is available and communication from this computer is allowed.
For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.
Is this configuration possible? Or do I need to open communication ports from the agents to the MS inside the corporate network and not use the Gateway?
Any ideas if someone else has done this are appreciated.
    Thank you.
    Regards.
    Eduardo Rojas

I'm sorry, maybe I didn't explained myself correctly, I already have the gateway up and running with some Workgroup machines connected to it using certificates, so the Gateway is indeed working. These Workgroup machines are in fact reporting back to the
Management Server on the internal network through the Gateway.
My problem is with Domain Member machines that are on the perimeter network. This machines are joined to the Active Directory inside the corporate firewall, not the Active directory from the perimeter network (where the Gateway is joined). So my question
is, can I connect these machines through the Gateway (even if the Gateway is on a different domain) or do I need to open ports and connect them directly to the management server (which is on the same active directory domain)?
Let me know if I made myself clear.
    Thank you.
    Regards.

  • Best networked printer for a MAC based network?

I may regret asking this :"), but what is the best network printer to use on a MAC based network? I have been the victim on the bloatware HP drivers for years, and am really sick of them. But what do I purge this nightmare for? Canon (like the MX860) looks interesting and is multifunction (a requirement). Lexmark seems to making a comeback, and Brother as well. Epson has seemed to do OK as well. Who has the most reliable drivers for the OSX platform, updates them the most regularly, and seems to actually care about Apple (as opposed to pandering to the Windows crowd almost exclusively).?
    Comments?
    Dan O

I did my homework for network printer/scanner/fax and came up with the Brother Color Laser MFC-9840 CDW. It's got every button and whistle, and they all work on a Mac or PC network. You can scan from the machine and pick which Mac to send the scan to, or scan from a Mac. Sheet feeder works for fax and scan, real duplex printing. All works on Leopard. They have lower models which will also work, but without the Color, or Wireless (which we don't use).
I've seen great on-going driver development with the latest operating systems...

  • Windows 8.1 search of network drives shows UNC path based results

How do I go about showing the network drive based path as opposed to the UNC based path in Windows 8.1?
In Windows 7 when the user searched for files on a network drive it displayed results that contained the network drive. In Windows 8.1 these searches yield the UNC
    path.
For example, Windows 7, if I search for TestFile.docx on Z: it will show a result such as "Z:\SomeFolder\SubFolder\TextFile.docx"
Windows 8.1, if I search for TestFile.docx on Z: it will show a result such as "\\SomeServer\SomeFolder\SubFolder\TextFile.docx"

    Hi,
Actually, I tested in my Windows 8.1 system, the result is that it does show (example)"Z:\folder" as the search result, like as Windows 7 system, here's the snapshot:
Or am I missunderstanding something? a snapshot from your result would be helpful.

  • Help needed with Multiplayer/Network aspect of a turn-based game.

    Hello,
I've converted a turn-based 4-player board game into a nicely working JApplet. Everything works fine, however, I'm stuck in "Hot Seat" mode. I need to get this working for multiple clients, but I'm not sure how to do this.
Can I use a servlet that the clients connect to to share data? The machine is running a webserver but I don't have access to the startup scripts. Can I launch the servlet manually?
If a servlet won't work, I am familiar with c/c++ socket programming. Should I just create a Java server to handle the exchange? I'm guessing applets can't connect to a server, so I'd have to convert the JAppet to an application, true?
Please give me an idea what the best mechanism to exchange data would be, and I'll follow that trail.
    -Pak

It sounds like the applet is a self-contained program, serving up to 4 players, and not communicating with a separate server or clients. This would imply that your single applet instance owns and maintains the game state model.
If you want to move to a multi-instance game, you have two choices. Either peer-to-peer, and you can do without server altogether if you want to, or client/server, and you need a server. Both have pros and cons, but usually the client/server model is superior, it is also by far the most common. For applets it may actually be the only choice due to security restrictions, but Im not an applet expert. Both of these distributed models require a rethink on your part regarding the game state model. If its a big rethink or not depends on your game and your ambition. Basic questions/issues can be:
    * Do all clients/instances see all state information?
    * Do you need persistance (e.g. save game, crash recovery)?
    * How do instances connect to each other/to the server?
    * Which instances may manage the game (accept/throw out players, terminate the game, etc)
    * Perhaps the most important: How is the consistency of state information ensured between the instances?
(A note on your other question: servlets are server-side java programs that generate HTML-pages to be sent to the browser, similar to PHP and ASP. They have nothing directly to do with applet technology.)

  • Networking 101

Have a web server, it has two ethers. One IP is set a public address the other is set to a private IP.The server is running DNS and I have SunScreen fire wall software installed. I have a cisco 675 router and is the default router. I want to put my other machines behind the firewall and assigned them a private networking IP. Not using DHCP at this piont. I have a 3m superstack switch which every thing is being connected to the one switch including the router. I have tried to set up a static and dynamic NAT rule between the private and the public network and assigned NT box a private IP. Nothing I do is working. The OS is Solaris 7 on the server.
I would appreciate any help I can get in finishing my set-up

    No need for a(nother) router!
<pre>high-speed Internet access -> Airport Extreme Base Station WAN port
Airport Extreme Base Station LAN Ethernet port -> HUB
Airport Extreme Base Station USP port -> USB printer
    HUB -> main computer
    HUB -> Ethernet printer
    Laptop connects wirelessly.</pre>
I've seen a report that says that one can't configure the Airport Extreme Base Station to act as a DHCP server on its Ethernet LAN port -- and this is consistent with the screens shown here... So it's possible that you'll have to assign your main computer and Ethernet printer static IP-addresses on the AEBS' Ethernet LAN; but I'd try it without, first.

  • Home network 101: How to get 3 Macs to feed photos off the same external HD

This has to be a super simple setup but the search I did reveals a lot pf pieces to the puzzle but not the basic idea.
I currently have three Macs running 10.4.10: an old iMac G3 500Mhz, an iMac G4 1Ghz and an iBook 1.4Ghz. They are all connected via generic ethernet cables (RJ45) I installed throughout the house to a Lynksis BEFSR41 EtherFast Cable router in the garage. That one is then connected to a Motorola SB5101 cable modem for our internet connection. Each computer lives happily by itself at the moment and when I need to transfer something from one to the other I temporarily turn Personal Sharing On, do the transfer and then turn it off again. So Sharing is Off 99% of the time because I read that even though they all have passwords, this is the safest way to keep them.
One problem that we are facing more and more is that four people in the family use these computers and we each have downloaded pictures in iPhoto on all computers. This creates a bit of a mess so I would like to have a central 500GB hard drive next to the router in the garage that would host all the iPhoto files and be permanently visible by each computer.
I read that the new Airport would offer this possibility. However, I am not interested in wireless because I have already run ethernet cable throughout the house. So my questions are these:
    - What is the best way to accomplish this scenario in terms of safety, speed and cost?
    - Ethernet cable is still safer and faster then wireless, correct?
    - I will be replacing the old iMac G3 with a new 24inch intel one as soon as they are introduced, hopefully this week. Would this old G3 one be useful as a server that the 500GB drive would be attached to? Or would its bus speed be so slow it would bring iPhoto on each machine down to a crawl? It wouldn't really be doing any work, just sit there with the 500 attached to its Firewire port so I can add it to the Lynksis chain.
Is the Lynksis now too old and slow to allow 3 computer to access that HD at firewire speed? If so, what would be a better choice?
Again, the three key factors and speed, safety nd cost. (But then again that's always the case, isn't it???) I really appreciate any help or redirection to existing threads or articles that I might have missed.
    Thank you very much.
    Bo

    Not likely...
They'd need your Passwords & Usernames, then your Router would have to Forward Port 548 to a particular machine, then the icing on the cake is that almost all of this is being done by Bots looking for Internet Explorer running from Drive C:\ and an OS that can execute .exe, .pif, .com, .bat, .etc. files!
So, if your Macs & Router aren't set up to allow you access from the outside world, nobody else can either... if they are then it's still very unlikely someone else could, but if you want to be as anally paranoid as me, then...

  • MS Access connectivity gets slow when connecting insidde network domain

    Hello,<o:p></o:p>
We've created an application based on Excel VBA that connects to an access DB located at the file server in our network domain. Now I'm installing
same app in another server for another domain, but the connection is really slow so the app hangs while retrieving information from the .mdb file located at the server.<o:p></o:p>
I created a local environment in my computer to test and realized as as soon as I connect the network cable the connection to the DB get slow, but
when I unplug the network cable the app start to responding as usual.<o:p></o:p>
I'm using Ole DB jet 4.0 with the following connection string:<o:p></o:p>
    cnt.Open "Provider=Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0;Data Source= MasterDB ;Jet OLEDB:Database Password= 12345;"<o:p></o:p>
It seems that the problem it is related to some authentication on the server that makes the connectivity slow because it has not sense to me that
when I connect the network cable and log into the domain the speed goes down even if the application is looking to the DB file in mi local hard drive.<o:p></o:p>

    I'd try them over here.

  • Real problems with ISP based DNS and Domain

    Hi all,
I have an external based domain name that would like to incorpate into my new server. At the moment, the ISP (1and1) is dealing with Mail and Hosting. Ideally, I would like to run the Mail Exchanger and leave the hosting to the ISP. However, I' having some trouble configuring the whole thing!
Firsty, I'm slightly at a loss as to what to call my DNS when setting up the server for the first time. Should this be the same as my current Domain name? If so, would htis cause conflicts running this name side by side with my ISP (even if it would just be used for file sharing etc?).
I have a few more questions but if anyone can help me with this one I'd be most greatful. I'm fairly new to Servers (one of the reasons for getting an OS X Server as I was told of it's ease of use!!) but willing to learn!
    Cheers,

  • Connect to Exchange 2013 on local network from a different domain on the same local network.

Hi we have domain a and domain b both on the same local networks using the same ip subnet.
domain a is Small Business server 2003
doimain b is Windows 2008 and Exchange 2013
How can I set this up so that client logging into domain a using Windows XP or Windows 7 can set up an exchange profile on Office 2010 to log into domain b running exchange 2013.  I need to know how to set up the autodiscover (i think) or how to enter
the server settings manually on the Outlook 2010 client (on domain a).  My understanding is that Outlook Anywhere means I can set up a profile "anywhere" even on the same local network segment as the exchange 2013 server.
    thanks

Let me explain the way i understood
    Domain A - domainA.mail.com
    Domain B - domainB.mail.com
To have common autodiscover record for the both the domain
Step 1: Create autodiscover record having the name of parent domain - e.g Autodiscover.mail.com
Step 2: Add this name in your Exchange certificate
Step 3: Create Host record for domainA.mail.com and domainB.mail.com
Step 4: Install IIS on a Windows server ensure you choose HTTP Redirection
    Step 5 :Create a folder C:\inetpub\wwwroot\autodiscover add a blank file called autodiscover.xml
Step 6: Create a new virtual directory called ‘autodiscover’.
Step 7: Select this new virtual directory > click on Content View > Right click on autodiscover.xml > Select ‘Switch to Features View’
Step 8: Double click on HTTP Redirect
Step 9: Change the HTTP Redirect settings to https://autodiscover.mail.com/autodiscover/autodiscover.xml
Step 9: Right click on Default Web Site > click on Edit Bindings - Add domainA.mail.com and domainb.mail.com in the http bindings
How it works: Autodiscover uses http redirection in which it get redirected to the respective domain to the autodiscover record
