Networking between macs problem

I have a Macbook pro and an 2 iMacs running mavericks and windows 7 under parallels and also 2 PC's running windows 7 on my LAN. They are all linked up with ethernet cables to a hub and a router. Internet connection on all is good and solid and never any problem. However connecting them together in order to share files since I upgraded the macs to mavericks has been a nightmare. There doesn't seem to be any reason to how one minute I can connect to an iMac from my book and then an hour later it can't. I may be able to connect from the iMac to my book, but then not to one of the PC's. It's perplexing and intermittent. Is there some way I can just reset all my network settings/locations and start again setting up my LAN from scratch? Should I create a workgroup as one does for windows? Should I rename all my computers? Please help as I'm sick of walking back and forth with a memory stick and airdrop isn't any good to me when I'm going from mac to PC.

Thanks but I'd much rather solve the issue. I've been swapping files over the LAN in my office between all different OSX versions and windows XP and 7 without any problems for the past 4 years, until now. The main difficulty seems to be between on iMac running mavs and my Macbook Pro also running Mavs. The others don't seem to have a problem apart from odd occasions. Why is this unreliable all of a sudden? I'd like to think that there's a way I can reset things or perhaps dump a cache somewhere to start a fresh. I know it's not my sharing settings because otherwise the other computers in the room wouldn't be able to share between both problem machines.

• Network between mac os 10.6.1 and windows 7

HI guys
I asking about networking between mac os 10.6.1 and windows 7
on windows 7, I opened file,printer sharing on (workgroup)homegroup.
on mac os 10.6.1, finder->go->computer. It show Macintosh HD & Network, click on Network, there is nothing there.
The only I can do is.... finder->go->connect to server (input smb://192.168.xxx.xxx and connect)
After that, on finder->go->computer->network is showing up 192.168.xxx.xxx
MY QUESTION IS HOW I CAN SEE WINDOWS (workgroup)HOMEGROUP ON MAC OS 10.6.1 BEFORE CONNECTED TO 192.168.XXX.XXX BY HAND?
Thank you!

I think you are asking, in effect, why you can't see your smb shares in "Shared" in the sidebar of a finder window? Often Sno does not make that connection automatically, and one must connect via smb://IpAddress (or computer network name). Once you do so, if you keep the connection active, then the Win7 machine is likely to be found under Shared eventually. The only way I have found to keep shares showning under Shared for an extended period is to keep all pertinent machines from sleeping over the period of expected access.

• Creating network between Mac and Linux

Hello guys! I need to set up network between my iMac and Ubuntu linux. iMac is connected in internet by Airport and Fon Wifi Router witch is connected in router which is connected to adsl -modem. My pc is connected directly to router. Both computers have access to internet. Is there any easy solutions to share files with mac and linux? I don't need any webservers etc, I just want to share files.
Other question related to this, why is my mac's ip address like 192.168... and linux ip addrress is 84.250...?
Thanks allready!

Though I'm not newbie with computers, I'm really confused becouse I haven't set up network like this never before.
Not a problem, no worry... we all know something somebody else doesn't and vice versa.
My linux says that my DHCP -IP is 193.210.18.18, is that related to this in any way?
Yes, if the Mac had an IP of 193.210.18.x, (but not 18 for x), then connection would be simple, but I think we must have two devices passing out IPs. What is the Mac's IP again?

Do you have any advice where I could start looking from the right IP of my linux?

• Im trying a home network between Mac and Win 7, but its very slow

Hi guys,
ive searched for this for the last couple of days, but i havent found my sollution yet.
I have been trying to setup a network between my macbook and win7, and it works...i can move data.
The problem is that it is VERY slow. (2MB/sec max in the monitor app, it takes 6 minutes to transfer 1GB)
This is my setup:
Macbook 2011 ML 10.8 (I use WiFi to the router)
Zyxel P-2601HN-F1
Dell PC (connected thru ethernet cable to the router)
The ethernet adapter of the Dell is 192.168.1.37 and its a new cabel.
So i type in CMD-K, then smb://192.168.1.37 and connect with user and pass
I tried all the stuff i read here, like changing channels, but it stays really slow.
The crazy part is when i do both in Wifi, its almost as fast as with cable...and i DO use different ips in the smb connection
Maybe im going wired all over the studio and my house, but i would be awesome if this would work at least at 10/20MB/s, thats almost usb stick speed.
please help,
wendel

So i bought the Airport Extreme and hooked up all my hd's on the usb port...
the wireles upload speed from macbook to hd's is 5-6MB/s which is a lot better (40-48Mbit/s)
in the end i think its a protocol & adapter settings issue, with Windows using smb2, and apple using some old protocol from the 90's in ML 10.8.x
Also, there are a lot of (for me) complicated network adapter settings one has to know, before getting great transfer speeds between Win and OSX...so its easy to mess it up in Windows 7.
I read that Mavericks switched to smb2 too...so let's wait for all my software to be mavericks compatible and see how fast that will be with my Airport Extreme!

• Wireless network between mac + PC keeps failing to connect.

Both of my computers my Macbook and my HP PC are connected on the same wireless internet connection with the same IP address the same server name and everything. I have been through both devices and enabled every sharing setting could find and think about.
I need this wireless network to get printer sharing online. as the PC has the printer connected via USB to it. If anyone can assist please do.
Thanks,
Connor.

Ok I got the PC to see my HP 940c wirelessly using Bonjour. However, I still can't get the Lexmark 2250 to show up on either the mac or pc wirelessly when connected to the hub? Is using a 4-port hub connected to the Airport express just not going to cut it for making a multiple printer hub?
I'd really like to do this plus make an network between the two computers.

• I am unable to share files satisfactorily over my home network between Mac and Windows

Please advise.
I have an iMac with a LaCie Thunderbolt external hard drive and a Windows 7 laptop connected via ethernet network to a Belkin router with a WD MyBook Live Duo attached to it via USB. The iMac also has a virtual PC in it using VMWare.
I have never been able to get file sharing to work satisfactorily across the network.
From the iMac, which is now running Yosemite, I can access the laptop and the external hard drive fine, but connections to the WD network drive are very slow and unreliable.
From the laptop, I can access the iMac and the WD network drive OK but while the LaCie share formatted for windows is visible, I am unable to open the individual files.
I was advised that I need a server. I have therefore bought and installed OS X Server on my Mac but I don't understand it and have absolutely no idea what to do to make it work. I open the LaCie share for example and cannot change anything - I get the message " 'Ignore ownership on this volume' is turned on for the volume containing the Share Point. All permissions will be ignored. This can be turned off in the 'Get info' window in the Finder." Except it can't, because there is no such option in that window.
I can find no help anywhere for this. Please tell me how I set my network up so that files can be shared freely across it.

• How to create a wifi network between Mac and iPhone

Hi there,
I have just wired Internet at my house, and i would like to create a network with the wifi of the mac, to connect my iPhone to the Internet.
Is that possible?
i have tried to do, I've created a network, encrypted it, the iPhone recognize it, but when i try to use safari, the following message appears.
"safari can`t open the page because it can't find the server"
So, is that possible and i am doing something wrong, or it isn't possible?
thx in advantage
Marcelo França
Brazil

This is a possibility. But please be aware using your Mac to emit a WiFi connection is a temporary solution. And it will get a short range unlike an actual WiFi Router. Also you may find it to be unstable at times. The Airport Card in your Mac was not designed to be a full time Router WiFi emitter. But more of a receiver to get the signal and use it for personal use.
1. Unlock the network on your Mac make it an open network
2. Go to your iPhone, Settings-Wireless-Tap on blue circle next to network name, Choose Forget network
3. Now go back, It will rescan and find an open network, Connect, and see if Safari works
If Safari works, Then you had a Security issue. Try using WEP 128 bit 13 character passkey or WEP 8 Character Passkey.
Cheers and best of luck

Mac/Windows Networking in Leopard
The following articles outline how to set up networking between Macs using Leopard and Windows PCs:
Setting up a Windows computer to share files with Mac users
Setting up a Mac computer to share files with Windows users
Sharing with Windows computers
If you can’t connect to your Mac from a Windows computer
Sharing your computer with others on your network
More information is also available by selecting Mac Help from the Finder's Help menu and searching for the relevant terms such as "windows", "networking", "sharing", etc.
Also read:
Simple guide to Leopard/Windows Home Networking
Written by Intercepter121 and originally posted on the Apple Discussions here.
If your network complies to the minimum requirements described below you should be able to share resources without any need to enter commands in the terminal to modify configuration files in your mac.
Requirements
1. A decent router
2. Mac Os x 10.5.1 installed on your macs
3. Windows XP or Vista
4. Number of network devices <10
5. Some network printers or drives (NAS)
6. A decent ISP offering a good DNS service
General Settings
If your router offers DHCP and any of the device has power saving features there is a risk that the IP addresses are renewed. This can be problematic as the devices keep changing IP addresses. As this is your network is strongly recommended to reserve IP addresses to the MAC (Machine Address Code) of the various devices so that they can power on and off and still keep the same IP.This simple suggestion will greatly improve the browsing of the local network.
Accessing Windows Resources from Leopard with no authentication
Windows
1. Check the settings of the PC and ensure the IP addresses on the local LAN are trusted
2. Activate sharing on the desired devices ensuring the shares are read and write. If you use Vista ensure password protected sharing is disabled.
3. Try to access the windows share from another windows computer if available to confirm no authentication is required
MAC
1. Go into system preferences->security-Firewall check that the setting is not on allow only essential services. Recommended settings is allow access to specific
2. Go back into system preferences network. On the tab location click edit locations. Duplicate Automatic and call the new location Home. Now select the Home location and go into Advanced-WINS. In the workgroup field enter the same value that is on the other windows computers for example HOME. Now press enter then go back to the main screen. Select Edit locations and delete the location automatic. Now edit your location Home and rename it Automatic. This workaround is a leopard bug described here.
3. Give 5 minutes to allow all the other machines to broadcast their IP address and the other computers should appear on the left side of your finder window. You can now select the shares you want to connect. As no authentication is active if you are prompted with a user name just press OK.
The procedure to access a NAS is the same as above, just ensure permissions are set to files are read/write for anyone to avoid confusion.
NOTE: There is no need to activate SMB sharing if you don't want to allow the PC to read folders on your MAC
Troubleshooting
After you have followed all the steps you don't see any windows PC.
Identify the IP address of the machine you want to connect. In finder select Option+K and enter SMB://IPADDRESS. If you can connect you have a name resolution problem. Go into your router configuration and ensure that the option DNS assigned by ISP is selected and you don't have services like Open DNS in use and fixed IP addresses in that field. Apply the changes and reboot the router. You should start seeing windows PC in finder shortly after.
Your ISP DNS service is poor and you must use Open DNS or similar
If you are forced to use services like open dns you have the risk that the router propagates the DNS servers to your machines. As the implementation of SAMBA in Leopard effectively blocks the MAC to be a master browser for performance reasons you end in a situation in which tiger machines connect and leopard ones don't see a single share. Let's fix it.
1. Go into System Preferences->Network then advanced DNS if you see here the IP addresses of the open dns servers this is the case. Unfortunately you will be forced to change the hosts file.
2.Ensure you have reserved IP addresses to all your machines so that they always get the same IP.
3. Now login into your mac as administrator and go into utilities=>terminal.
4. Issue the following command sudo pico /etc/hosts
5. Now scroll down and enter all the IP addresses and computer names of any device you want to browse
6. Reboot your MAC
The windows devices will now appear in finder and you will be able to connect with Option+K.
You cannot access shares even entering the IP address
You have not reserved IP addresses to each machine. Go into your router LAN set up and make sure that is the case.
Accessing Leopard resources from Windows
1. Go into system preferences->security-Firewall check that the setting is not on allow only essential services. Recommended settings is allow access to specific
2. Go into System preferences->accounts and click on Guest flag the option Enable guest account to access shared folders
3. Now into System preferences->sharing select file sharing and then options here flag SMB and select the user that has to be logged into the computer when the share has to be accessed. Ensure that the folder you want to share has read/write or whatever permissions you like it to have set for Everyone
You should now be able to see your MAC in the windows network resources and access the shared folder with a double click without any password request.
Troubleshooting
You don't see any MACs from Windows
Check the firewall settings at the start of this post. Then go back to the Network configuration hit advanced and then TCPIP check is using DHCP and not a fixed address. Then check the sharing is set as above with SMB clicked. If SMB is not set you won't even see your mac from windows.
You see the MAC and the shared folders but you can't read or write on it
Ensure you have set the guest account to access shared folders. Then check on the sharing preferences that there is at least one folder with read permission for everyone. The classic case here is Dropbox that leopard sets as read and write for the user of the MAC but no access for other users. You try to click on drop box and receive an error but when you actually try to write a file you can do it. Check the permissions on the subfolders of the share as those permissions will prevail on the home shared folders
FAQ
You may want to do more complicated things, but first ensure you can actually share files without security in place so you can identify the root cause of your possible problems
I want to password protect my windows shares: once you have done the relative set up in windows vista and ensured you can connect from another windows machine you will need to use user name and password of the Vista user to connect.
I want to password protect my MAC shared folders: Go into user account and disable guest access to shared folders is no shared folder has to be accessed without password otherwise leave it checked. Create a new user for sharing (better than giving away your password) so that this user only accesses the folders you want to share. In System preferences network select file sharing SMB and flag only the new user you have defined. Then go back to the folder section and set the permissions you like on the folder you want to share for this newly defined user.
Good Luck

• Network between Vista and Mac

i'm trying to create a network between a Vista desktop and my Macbook Pro for files and printer sharing.
after lots work with setting on Vista, I now can enter in MacbookPro folders from Vista. the problem is by Mac side: i can't find the printer connect on Vista (and shared), and the icon of PC don't appear on Finder, so i can't enter on Vista's folders. the problem with file sharing is strange, cause only one time, today, icon of PC was appeared on Finder (come back to Stop of Mac)..... i've traied with the same method another times, without success...
I don't now what to do. I hope someone help me
Message was edited by: -Slevin-

I have limited knowledge but will try to help you as I have battled through this myself recently...You will lose nothing if you give it a try!
In System Preferences open the Sharing folder. Check the boxes to enable 'File' & 'Printer' Sharing. In the same open window select 'Options'.. Here I have Share files and folders using AFB and (importantly) also Share files and folders using SMB. - 'on' should be checked and 'Account' should i believe be the name assigned to your Macbook. - select 'Done' and then also close the 'sharing' window in sys preferences to take you back to the desktop.
In 'Finder' select the 'Go' option in the toolbar. Select connect to server from the drop down menu. You now need to enter the server address which will be the name of your Vista Pc - enter as follows: smb://(your vista name).. you may have to also enter the password for the Vista machine if it is configured in this way. ( It has been a while since I completed this so a little rusty here!)
If you have entered the correct information when you hit 'Connect', your Macbook should find your Vista desktop that has previously not been appearing in your Macbook 'Sharing' section - this was the issue that I was originally experiencing. You should now see the Vista machine in the Sharing section of your Macbook.
If this has been successful to here... This will enable access to try to solve the printer sharing problem? I think this one is beyond me as there are so many different configurations/installation options dependent upon the type of printer and network configurations.
It is possible to configure your Macbook to automatically find your Vista machine at startup if it is not found as a matter of course, which I perceive to be the case here... Try this to automate connection at startup..
Go to Sys Preferences and sect 'Accounts' you may have to enter your password to initiate changes. Making the assumption that you are connected now to your Vista machine and it is showing in the 'Shared' section of 'Finder'- select the 'Login Items' option and then select the '+' under where it states 'To hide an application when you log in etc etc.
From the window that opens you will now select your Vista machine from the left hand folders menu. when done click 'Add' and close windows to return to your desktop. Re-start the Macbook to check whether the Vista machine will now load to the Mac automatically at startup.
I hope this works for you as it has for me - The non discovery of the vista machine by the Mac was driving me round the bend

• ITunes 7 - syncing between Mac and PC using network

I thought there was an announcement today that Apple had made it easier to copy your iTunes library between Mac and PC with or without using an iPod.
I have not been able to find such an option in the iTunes 7 menus on my mac or pc. I could copy the library using standard network file copy, but then I would lose the playlists and settings.
Anybody know the new way to copy/sync a mac and pc itunes library while keeping playlists and settings?

There is something incompatible would be my guess. Did you disconnect all your peripherals in safe mode just to check?
You might now create a new temporary user account. Log into the new account. Do the panics still occur?
I would also visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on diagnosing kernel panics. Sometimes they can be difficult to track down. Looking at each new panic log would help determine if it's cause is associated with the same extensions.

• How can I set up a wireless network between two Mac Mini's (media centres)?

I've just received my second mac mini (core duo, 1.83, 1 Gb ram)and want to set up a wireless network to link this with my original mac mini (PPC 1.42, 512MB) and my Belkin wireless router (g std).
I'm using both as media centres in different rooms and want to keep all my media (films, photo's, music etc.) on one mini (connected to a 640GB external drive) and access it over the wireless network. Sort of a more felxible Apple TV setup??
I've got the wireless network working no problems with both mini's connected to the internet over the network but I'm stuck at how I get the two mini's to see each other. I've tried "the Missing Manual" and these forums but no success so far.
I know it can be done but would really appreciate any suggestions/directions on what to do?
Thanks in advance<
• Wish to create network between PC and Mac

Hi, I wish to make a network between my iMac G5 and my PC running XP Pro. As soon as I plugged in the pc into my router I instantly got internet on my pc. So how do I make a network to exchange files, and share printers, and dvd drives. One of the things I want to do is use Popcorn 2 to burn a DVD but since I don't have a burner on my mac I want it to burn on my Windows PC (with the mac software).

Welcome to the discussions!
"I want it to burn on my Windows PC (with the mac software)."
You can't use the Mac's software to burn a DVD on your PC. You can create a disk image, then bring that over to your PC on the network and burn it on the PC, but that will require the software to be on the PC for that. I think that is what you meant anyway, but I wanted to make sure.
Networking your Mac and PC is really not that hard to do. The Apple guides are not as clear as they could be, so start with Joel Shoemaker and Felix. They have some excellent step by step instructions and are very easy to follow.
For printer sharing, you might also need third party, open source drivers. Depending on the connection - on the PC or the Mac - and the printer brand they can be found in any number of places.
Give those pages a look and if you have anything specific that comes up, be sure to post back here and we can walk you through it.

Hi, KK93.
Sometimes a simple power cycle of the router and Mac can resolve the issue. However, try the steps in the article below to troubleshoot the Wi-Fi issue with your MacBook.
