Networking in a graphics environment

I have five Macs, G4's and G5's, all running OSX 10.4.11 - Five graphic designers, who back up their work on a Mac XServer 10.4.11
Designer A backs up his job to the XServer, then Designer B needs to edit it, so she attempts to transfer it from the XServer.
Permission denied for only some of the files, not all.
My question is: What is the proper way to network these Macs in this kind of environment. We need to share things all the time.
Do I create a group? So far, they have to log on to each other as "Guests" and can utilize the Public>Drop Box directory.
I created a Group, but when files are pulled off of the XServer, the Group permissions reverts back to the individual owner.
Thank you for any insights...

Sure:Group is good.
Make sure all the users are in that group, make sure they all log on with their names (not as Guest), ensure that the sharepoint has propagated permissions when you first set it up.
Are you using ACL, do you know?
If you are still having problems after that, then it may be helpful if you post the actual permissions for users and group for a file.

  • Solaris 10 Sparc not rebooting in graphical environment

    I've installed Solaris 10 on Sparc. When I reboot the system it only boots into character login prompt. I then logged in and cd /usr/dt and executed dtlogin which enabled me to bring up the graphical environment. This is a brand new install on some old hard drives.
    When I installed 9 last week on this same machive, but different harddrive, the graphical login always came up.
    What have I done or doing wrong. I installed solaris 10 for sparc and chose automatic reboot after installation so there weren't any other questions that I may have missed during the install.
    Any help appreciated. Thanks.

    It is working now - I ran sysid-unconfig, rebooted, re-entered all the info and it rebooted and came up to the login screen.

    "Memory" in this case means RAM, the working space for the processor in the iPad. It is different from storage space, the latter being what is referred to by the "32GB", "64GB" etc. specification.

  • [SOLVED] Graphical environment won't boot up after today's update.

    Hi
    I've performed a -Syu today morning and so far I haven't been able to get my graphical environment (gnome 3) up.
    The update didn't seem to be faulty, no unusual messages caught my eye. Here's a complete list of packages that were upgraded (from pacman.log)
    - shared-color-profiles removed
    - upgraded colord (1.0.6-1 -> 1.2.0-1)
    - upgraded gtk3 (3.12.1-1 -> 3.12.1-2)
    - upgraded colord-gtk (0.1.25-1 -> 0.1.25-2)
    - upgraded cronie (1.4.11-1 -> 1.4.11-2)
    - upgraded elfutils (0.158-1 -> 0.158-2)
    During the next bootup, when the information 'reached target graphical interface' appeared, I got some screen blinking and this:
    "[drm:hsw_unclaimed_reg_clear] *ERROR* Unknown unclaimed register before writing to 4a000
    This error message and the blinking appears about 8 times, then the process just hangs.
    I have tried downgrading each of the aforementioned packages, but it didn't help. There's a bunch of diagnostic stuff coming out of pacman on every operation though:
    http://ix.io/bZg
    The first kind of error message, by the glib-2.0 files is Polish for 'file is empty or only contains spaces'; the other kind, by the ldconfig lines, means 'file empty, left unchecked'.
    For good measure, here's my entire dmesg output. It seems to contain a bit more information about the unclaimed register error at the end.

    Please assist me in getting this fixed.

    No, I don't have nouveau-dri installed. It might be the kernel driver. Messages from 'nouveau' have been appearing ever since I've installed the system actually, and I've learned to ignore them, but they did initially make me raise an eyebrow. Anyway, everything was fine and dandy for about 4 months now, until this morning's update, when the packages mentioned in my initial post were installed.
    As for the second matter, see my initial post:
    The first kind of error message, by the glib-2.0 files is Polish for 'file is empty or only contains spaces'; the other kind, by the ldconfig lines, means 'file empty, left unchecked'.
    The one you're asking about is the second ('file is empty, it has not been checked')
    I'm now in the process of locating and reinstalling the packages to which these files belong. I've already handled the QT libs (I think) and I'm going to try to handle the others:
    all in the lib32 folder:
    - libelf.so and .so.1 and -0.158.so
    - libdw.so and .so.1 and -0.158.so
    - libasm.so and .so.1 and -0.158.so
    - liblcms2.so and .so.2 and .so.2.0.6
    I have no knowledge of how these affect the bootup of Gnome however...
    edit:
    I have successfully reinstalled the following packages:
    lib32-lcms2
    lib32-elfutils
    lib32-qt4
    rebooting...
    ...and still just a mouse cursor over the bootup log...
    The last line of dmsg says:
    systemd-journald[204] Failed to write entry (26 items, 170304121 bytes) despite vacuuming, ignoring: Argument list too long
    is there a way to get a hold of what can't be written in there? I don't know where else to look for information on what's wrong.
    There's also this in the journalctl (both the last one and the previous one I pasted). The problem _is_  Gnome rendering nothing but a cursor, so perhaps this could be of use...
    kwi 29 19:59:18 wapiti gnome-session[465]: (gnome-shell:500): GLib-GIO-ERROR **: Settings schema 'org.gnome.settings-daemon.peripherals.touchscreen' is not installed
    kwi 29 19:59:18 wapiti kernel: traps: gnome-shell[500] trap int3 ip:7fb603707993 sp:7fff2a1a55f0 error:0
    I have pursued that trail. Indeed, it turned out that my gnome-settings-manager package was completely broken. Its configuration files were empty (the ones in /usr/share/glib-2.0/schemas), as was /var/lib/pacman/local/gnome-settings-daemon-3.12.1-2/files file.
    I have performed a pacman -S --force gnome-settings-daemon and I'm no longer writing from my girlfriend's PC
    I have a follow-up question to the more knowledgable - how and why can a package become corrupted like this??
    My Gnome booted up, however it works pretty damn choppy. It's as fast as normal, but there are no animations. Also, there are frequent glitches before a window is rendered. Part of the screen becomes all scrambled for a moment before the window appears.
    I'll try to look for reasons on my own, but I'd still appreciate advice on debugging my glitchy Gnome and explanations as to why gnome-settings-daemon had basically wiped itself out...
    Ok, on a final note in this topic: the glitches were fixed by force reinstalling xf86-video-intel and intel-dri.

  • No graphics environment

    The proprietary nvidia driver will require configuration. Follow the suggestion in the Beginners' Guide and use nouveau first (it has a section with instructions for nvidia cards), so you don't need a /etc/X11/xorg.conf. Once you get it working, you can switch to the closed source driver if you still want to.
    Just start back at this step:
    https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Be … _Install_X.
    You should remove the 'nvidia' package and reboot first to make sure the module isn't loaded and nouveau is loaded (the kernel module doesn't need to be installed, it will just load when you reboot).
    Then, you just need xorg and xf86-video-nouveau, along with mesa and nouveau-dri if you want 3d. If you've made an xorg.conf, delete it, and just use the /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-nouveau.conf that the guide tells you to make.
    Switch to your regular user, make sure there's no .xinitrc, and startx will work fine.
    I started from this step and when a typed
    startx
    i got the
    no screens found

    edit: now i noticed: how do i remove the nvidia package?

  • Network Requirement in Clustered environment ( EP 6.0 )

    Hi,
    We are testing to deploy EP 6.0 SP2 in relatively slow WAN environment (latency 300 ms, bandwidth 1,5 mbit). We tried to add another J2EE node to the remote location but starting of additional J2EE node take several hours ( we had to modified CoreLoadTimeout, AdditionalLoadTimeout in Service manager to maximum ).
    Are you aware of any network requirement for communication between J2EE node in cluster? Do you think that additional J2EE node in remote location will improve the local performance in remote location ?

    Hi Richard,
    Actually there is a virtual LAN over the WAN so all nodes are in the same subnet. The problem is bandwidth I think.
    The remote server is starting in more that 12 hours. Does anybody know what kind of communication is between J2EE node ? (aside from synchronization)

  • Server network in a Netweaver environment

    Hello there,
    I have a question regarding building a server network in a Netweaver landscape.
    First of all, here's our situation - Our SAP systems are hosted externally and we've had a few ORA-3113 and ORA-3114 errors recently (for those not using Oracle - this is an error that occurs when the application disconnects momentarily from Oracle. It usually happens during network problems). In investigating this problem, I discovered that our hosting partners have not build a server network and all server traffic shares the client network. The problem was caused by the daily backup being incorrectly configured so that it also ran over the network instead of over fibre to the tape library.
    I did some further reading into the above problem and found the 'Adaptive Infrastructure for mySAP' book from SAP Press states that server networks are generally no longer necessary because a Gbit LAN backbone can provide enough bandwidth to handle up to 4000 users (we have only 600). However, the book does not mention how much traffic can be generated in a Netweaver environment with R/3, BW, APO, SolMan, etc... components all talking to each other. We currently only run ECC5 (with 3 app servers) and SolMan, so our server traffic isn't great. However, we plan to add BW and APO soon and I fear that the lack of server network could cause us problems.
    On to my main question - can anyone provide me with real-world examples of how your landscapes are built and whether or not you use a server network to isolate your server traffic. What are your thoughts on the subject?
    Kind regards,
    Arwel Owen.

    Hi,
    Since each KMS key can be installed on up to six KMS hosts. You can configure another KMS host in you test environment.
    Not quite sure about the KMS host upgrade you referred. If you don’t want to update the OS, some patches will be required.

  • RMAN Backup to external network/drive on Windows environment

    Hello, I have been searching quite a while in many different documents, but I still haven't found a clear understanding on the following subject:
    Is it possible to have in a Windows environment a backup strategy which writes these backups to an external network/drive? As for example:
    CONFIGURE CHANNEL DEVICE TYPE DISK FORMAT '\\ext_server_name\backups\%d_ora_df%t_s%s_p%p';
    I am aware that this type of backup functions under Unix and Linux environments, nevertheless I would like to do this also under Windows.
    Is there a possible way of doing this? And if there it is how can I achieve this, or where can I read about doing this in this way?
    Thanks for your help. I hope this information is sufficient for you?
    Server: Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Server 5.2 Service Pack 1 (32-bit)
    Oracle: 10.2.0.2.0

    I know this error in the context of Kerberos adapter, is that installed?
    ORA-12631: Username retrieval failed
    This error is usually a problem external to Oracle.
    ORA-12631 / TNS-12631, "Username retrieval failed"
    *Cause: The authentication service failed to retrieve the name of a user.
    *Action: Enable tracing to determine which routine is failing.
    Possible causes:
    Problem: Cannot read key table. The key table that has been extracted must be readable by the user the oracle server process runs as.
    Action: On a UNIX system, check the file permissions with ls -l and use chmod as appropriate. This can also be an issue on Windows NT with an NTFS file system. Use the file explorer and change the security setting for the file as needed.

  • Query networking into hostile windows environment

    I have been getting kernel panics on shutdown of my new Imac 24 since i got it out of the box.
    Additionally I have had a disintegrating experience with Airport.
    At first was working fine and i could connect to net etc.
    Then problems connectng, etc.
    To the point where i cannot even see the hardware in system profile anymore.
    The crash reports after the KPs implicate the Airport kexts.
    I did a archive and install - no love.
    I used pacifist and extracted and installed airport drivers etc. Restarted.
    Voila I could see Airport ... yay. shutdown - no KP. Yay.
    Restart, no Airport, and KPs again.
    My theory
    I am in an area thick with wireless networks.
    Something i did trying to connect to something has corrupted and continues to corrupt my Airport drivers every startup.
    Is this a possibility?
    I am fine using the ethernet into the network.
    I am contemplating taking the machine back to apple when i have finished the job i am doing here.
    regards
    P

    Strangest thing!
    2 months after this problem occurring everyday
    to the point where I dont even think about it
    I noticed that the crash reports were no longer appearing at startup
    and the hard shutdown was no longer required
    and voila the airport card is visible again
    IT HAS FIXED ITSELF
    I have no idea how this could be
    the machine has not been online, I had stopped doing diagnostic/repair attempts some weeks ago.
    could repeated startups work their way through the OS and eventually repair the code?
    I do think it is still the hardware behaving erratically
    any thoughts

  • Best Network Layout for Unifi Environment

    Did you already purchase the equipment?Depending on the layout of the home, I would say that 5 AP could be a bit overkill, but it will definitely take care of your coverage. If you have some area outside your home that you are also wanting to get coverage for, like a porch, back yard, etc, and you're wanting to use the UAP-Pro inside to extend the coverage outside, this may or may not give you the results you're looking for. Also if you have 2 stories or if you are wanting to extend coverage to 3 stories, or 2 stories and a sub-structure like a basement, you will have to take that into account with placement and signal penetration.
    Take into account the building material on the outside walls of your home as well. If it's just insulation and wood, and you don't have to extend very far, then you should be fine. If you have brick or metal...

    I am trying to get some advice on the best layout for a new install of a Unifi home network. - Surfboard SB6183 Modem for 300Mbs Connection- Ubiquiti Networks - ERPOE-5 - EdgeRouter with 5 Ports- Cisco 24 Port Gigabit Switch (don't know model number - All home connections home run here)- 5 Unifi Pro Ap's- 2 Airport Express for Airtunes only (wireless off)- 2 x 8 Port Gigabit Switches ( 1 for media cabinet, 1 for office )I am trying to figure out the best topology for how I connect everything. Would it be best to plug in 4 x Unifi Ap's directly into the Router and one into the 24 port switch, or to plug them all into the switch?I also have had alot of trouble with my current all apple setup with airplay stuttering (all wired), so would it be better to place the airport expresses directly into the Unifi Router?Lastly, are all pro level...

  • [SOLVED]Graphical environment doesn't start on boot

    Hi,
    I've tried to change default boot target to graphical, but it doesn't work. I use grub so I tried to edit
    /etc/default/grub
    GRUB_DEFAULT=2
    GRUB_TIMEOUT=5
    GRUB_DISTRIBUTOR="Arch"
    GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet systemd.unit=graphical.target"
    GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX=""
    It didn't change anything, so I tried to use
    systemctl set-default -f graphical.target
    But it's not working either. What am I doing wrong? Or what am I missing?
    I know that simple workaround is starting X after log in to console, but I don't want this.
