NetworkManager - switching between wired and wireless

Hello!
I’ve set up a new laptop with Arch and now have a question concerning NetworkManager. Is it possible in NM to switch between wired and wireless connections like it is with Connman (https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Co … d_wireless)?
So far it appears that NM only disables the wired connection when wireless is used but keeps the wireless alive when switching to wired.
I have already looked for a corresponding configuration but couldn’t find anything that helps.
Thanks in advance.

Easy Mode:
You can install the tlp-rdw package and edit the /etc/default/tlp configuration file which has an option that does that.
Hard Mode:
If you don't want to install a package and its dependencies, you can write your own script and put it in /etc/NetworkManager/dispatcher.d and have the NetworkManager dispatcher hook run the script (which is actually what tlp-rdw does but you don't have to install the tlp package as a dependency)
Note: tlp is a power manager and if you have any other power managers installed it might conflict with them so be wary of that.
Here is the wiki page on tlp https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Tlp

  • Autoselection for a switch between wired and wireless network

    Hello,
We currently have a VTC codec installed on a mobile cart that can connect via wireless or wired network.  The cart has the Linksys WET610N Dual-Band Wireless-N gaming and video adapter bridge.  If you want to go wireless you will have to unplug the CAT5 that goes into the walljack and plug in the cable from the bridge into the codec.
We need a 3-5 port switch. Port 1 will connect to the wireless bridge.  Port 2 would be available to connect to a wall jack.  Port 3 will connect to the codec.
We need the ability for the switch to autoselect port 1 and 2.  If Port 2 is not connected (no link light), then Port 1 will be active.  If Port 2 is active, Port 1 will be inactive.
I need to know how to configure the bridge and a network switch if this is scenerio is possible.  Any help is appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Aaron

Well, I thought i had tried this before, but I followed another board's suggestion of turning of IGMP proxy and it is now working. I can see my iTunes server which is wired on my wireless devices.

  • Sharing iTunes between wired and wireless Macs

    Hi,
I have a Mac laptop connected wirelessly to an Airport Express -- which is wired to a desktop Mac Mini. I'm trying to share music but cannot. I've done all the proper settings in the iTunes preferences and the same in System Preferences -- I think -- on both computers, but on neither computer is anything showing in the Sources window. It says that there are no users online.
Is there something in the System Preferences box that I'm missing? Should I turn the firewall off (I shouldn't need to, since I've checked the iTunes Sharing box)? Is the main problem here that you can't share music between a wired and wireless computer? (This would be a bit strange to me, but you never know.)
One other thing. I was trying out the network and I can only get access to the wired Mini's Public folder as a Guest, not as a Registered User. Is there something very badly wrong here?
    Any suggestions welcome. Thanks.

Thanks for the rapid response. All of those preferences, however, are already set properly (i.e., as you said) on both computers. When I try to go to the Network, I can access the wired desktop Mini's hard drive, but when I try to do it on the mini to get into the laptop's it can't find the afp. It just keeps searching but then says it doesn't exist. Not sure if this network-connectivity problem is relevant or not for this particular issue of iTunes sharing. Grateful for any advice.

  • Bridge between wired and wireless

This is what I am hoping to accomplish
    router *****wireless connection 802.11******wlan0 - laptop - eth0 --------Wired ethernet---------------- another host(s)
    routers IP is 192.168.1.1
The "other host(s)" need to be able to pull information via dhcp from the router.
    What I've tried so far
I've installed bridge-utils and enabled ip forwarding in /proc
    brctl addbr br0
    brctl addif br0 wlan0
    brctl addif br0 eth0
This is where I get lost. I think I need to manually configure wlan0 and eth0. In Ubuntu I think I remember setting br0 to bridge_ports in /etc/network.d/interfaces but I am not sure how to do this in Arch.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks

Ok I think I have been going about this all wrong, is it possible to do what I need to do using iptables masquerading?
    Last edited by band-aid (2008-07-21 07:20:33)

You can use bridging OR ip masquerading - you don't need both. If you use bridging, wlan0 and eth0 join the bridge, which then gets its own virtual interface br0. This is the interface that gets an IP address, so that the laptop can continue to function normally. In this scenario, everything is on  single subnet, and no ip forwarding or routing manipulation is required.
If you use IP masquerading, you're basically setting up NAT (Network Address Translation). The router and wlan0 are on one subnet, eth0 and the other hosts(s) are on another, and the laptop functions as the router between the two - as well as doing its normal laptop-y things, of course.
There are probably various pros and cons either way - one that occurs to me now is that the IP masquerade option will probably leave you with a double-NAT setup, because your existing router is most likely doing NAT already. This may or may not be a problem for you - depends really on the kind of network apps you will be running. Personally, I prefer bridging in this kind of situation, just because I find it simpler.

  • M45 S359 laptop auto switch between ethernet and wireless

Had a HDD failure, replaced the HDD and rebuilt system.  Everything is working with the exception of autoswitching the connecting to the internet.  The machine used to auto switch to wireless if the ethernet cable was removed and connect via wireless or vise versa.  I now have to manually switch to the connection, do a repair before it will connect.  Once the repair is done, the connection is solid. It is probably a simple?? configuration somewhere, but I do not know where.   Need some guidance,  Tx..

  • WRT54G2 v1 - Substantial Speed Difference Between Wired and Wireless Connection

    Hi everyone,
I have a WRT54G2 v.1 router connected to an RCN Cable Modem. My download transfer rate direct from the cable modem is 18 Mbps. Thankfully, I can get the same download rate when I plug my laptop into a wired ethernet connection from the router. However, the wireless connection only gets a download rate of 0.8Mbps. Also, my wireless card is pretty new (Intel 4965AGN) and has the latest driver (I can get far higher download rates at mobile hotspots, for instance). Here is what I've tried with the router:
     - I've upgraded the router firmware to the latest build (Version 1.0.04, 07/08/2009).
     - I've tried multiple channels on the network (1, 6, 11).
     - I use WPA Security.
     - Upon advice from the Linksys live chat support, I've changed the MTU settings to manual and set them to 1300.
     - They also recommended that I change the following settings: “RTS Threshold” – 2304 “Fragmentation Threshold” – 2304 “Beacon Interval” – 50
     -   And of course: I've got my own SSID. The router is 5 feet off the ground. There are no other wireless devices that would cause interference. The router is not near large metal objects, fish tanks, or any other physical obstruction.
Is there anything else I can do? Thank you so much in advance for reading. I really appreciate it.

Also, is there anything to the fact that only the download rate seems to change?

  • DPC3825 Blocks communication between wired and wireless

I currently have six devices connected to this cable modem/router over wireless and two devices connected through wired ethernet connections. I can ping the wireless devices from the wired device without issue, but services such as Apple's file sharing, AirPlay, etc. are blocked - the AppleTV can't see the Mac Mini unless they're both wired or both wireless.
I have no MAC filtering enabled. I use WPA security with a pre-shared key. CTS protection mode is disabled. WMM is enabled, "No ACK" is disabled.
SPI Firewall protection is disabled. Block anonymous internet requests is checked. There is no IP filtering, no parental controls, no time of day rules, etc. I have no port filtering, forwarding, or triggering. DMZ is disabled. UPnP is disabled.
    I'm using firmware version
    DPC3825-v302r12901-100914a
I'm hoping there's something simple that I'm missing here. Any thoughts?

    Hi Mikael
Thank you for your question.  However, this community is for Cisco Small  Business Products which the DPC3825 is not.
We  did some research for you and  found out that this is an internet  service provider (ISP) supported  product.  In otherwords you need to  contact your ISP or technology  reseller that you purchased this from to  help you with your question.

  • 7344 servo motion switching between open and closed loop operation

I have a custom end-of-line test system presently using a 4-axis 7344 servo controller to perform various functional tests on small, brushed DC motors. The system is programmed in C/C++ and uses flex motion functions to control the motor during testing. Motors are coupled to external encoder feedback and third party PWM drives running in closed-loop torque mode from an analog command signal. The system uses all four motion axis channels on the 7344 board to independently and asynchronously test up to four production motors at a time.
In closed-loop mode, the system runs without issue, satisfying the battery of testing protocols executed by this system. I now have a request to add additional test functionality to the system. This testing must be run in open loop mode. Specifically, I need to use my +/- 10v analog output command to my torque drive to send different DAC output levels to the connected motor.drive while monitoring response.
I do not believe the flex motion library or 7344 controller includes functions to easily switch between open and closed loop mode without sending a new drive configuration. I am also under the impression that I cannot reconfigure one (or more) servo controller axis channels without disabling the entire drive. As my system runs each axis channel in an asynchronous manner, any requirement to shutdown all drives each time I change modes is an unworkable solution.
I am open to all ideas that will allow asynchronous operation of my 4 motor testing stations. If the only solution is to add a second 7344 controller and mechanical relays to switch the drive and motor wiring between two separately configured servo channels, so be it. I just want to explore any available avenue before I place a price tag on this new system requirement.
    Bob

    Jochen,
Thank you for the quick response. The 7344 board does an excellent job running my manufacturing motor assemblies through a custom end-of-line tester in closed loop mode. A portion of the performance history and test result couples the motor through a mechanical load and external shaft. The shaft is in contact with a linear encoder that closes my servo loop.
My new manufacturing requirement is to also sample/document how the small DC motor behaves in open loop operation. Your solution is exactly what I need to perform the additional functional tests on the product I am manufacturing. I see no reason why this cannot work. I was originally concerned that I would need to reinitialize the 7344 board after changing axis configuration. Initialization is a global event and impacts all four channels on the 7344 board.
Using flex_config_axis() to change axis configuration on a single channel without disturbing other potentially running axis channels will solve my concern. It will be several weeks before I can return to the manufacturing facility where the 7344-based testing machine is located. I will update this thread once I verify a successful result.

  • A very strange wired and wireless network issue

    Hello,
I have never had any issue at all with my macbook (2008) until this week, I use it both for work and personal use.
Most of time, I'm used to be on customer site, so I use wired and wireless connections depending of the situation....
I have never had any issue at all with wifi neither ethernet connections during three years, until this week... and I can say this is the most strange thing I have ever seen....
Using wired or wireless connection, always the speed of network was really good, at home, many customers, etc never had any problem...
But this week I'm currently out of home, and the hotel where I'm staying I'm having very poor network rate....
Using wireless connection, the download speed is no more than 10kb.... and using ethernet I get less speed... but during the day I'm on customer site, using the ethernet connection and download speed is really good, more than 500k-800k....
I have already tried in the hotel few wifi connections (there are three) and differents wired connections (in diferent rooms) and the download speed is always the same, no more than 10kb...
During this afternoon, I could go into hotel's lab and could connect directly to the router using cable, same speed no more than 10kb....
The most strange thing is on their computers the download speed using wired connection is around 6Mb....
how is possible I'm getting no more than 10kb of download speed when the pc's at hotel using same wired connection gets 6Mb?
I have already deleted current network connections, execute onyx to clear everything, perform dhcp connection, tried manual ip etc, and always the results are the same...
I know there is no problem with the macbook, because it works pretty good at every location I've been... but until this week...
Sincerely I'm getting a little crazy here, I'll appreciate any help!!!
    thanks in advance

I've seen something like this on my T400 when it was running Vista.  Now that I use Win 7 it's been OK. I rather doubt that your issue is the same but I'm tossing it out here just on the off chance.
Im my case, I had to downgrade my Intel 5300 card to a 5100 (as suggested by a Lenovo 2nd-tier tech) to get things working.
My symptoms were a little different.  Wifi was fine until I went back to a wired network.  After that, trying to use the same wifi AP as before would end up associated, but no internet access.  DHCP wasn't working.  The GUI "find" app didn't work as expected either.  Some APs showed up, and some didn't.
If I configured for automatic connection to my home AP it would try and fail.  Just rebooting at that point would again attempt an automatic connection that would succeed.
What I have noticed now that I run Win 7 is that Access Connections is completely useless.  Often the "finder" doesn't show an AP 3 feet away.  I didn't notice that this happened after a switch from wired, but maybe.
Are you using Access Connections?  If so, you might try uninstalling it.
Sorry I can't be of real help,

  • Do I need to reset the router when switching between Win and Mac?

I just set up my new Mac Pro with OSX 1.5.2 and Win XP using Bootcamp and it all works fine, but I have one question about connecting to the internet.
I have a Belkin pre-N wireless router. I am connected using an ethernet cable.
When I switch between OSX and Windows by restarting the computer, is it necessary to restart the router while the computer is off so that when it comes back on it can locate its proper connection?
When I was working on my old PC and my new Mac Pro, I noticed that if I just took the ethernet cable from the Mac or PC and connected it to the other machine, it couldn't find the internet unless I turned off the router, waited a moment and turned it back on again, connected to the other machine and then started the machine.
As the two OSs are now in the same machine, will this continue to happen or can I simply switch between operating systems without having to re-initialize the router and connect it before turning on the computer again?
I haven't tried it yet because I am afraid to screw things up, so I am continuing to turn off, restart the router, re-connect and turn the computer on again. That work perfectly but it is tedious.
Can anyone please advise on whether this is necessary or not?
Thanks a lot for any advice.

    Luis:
You should be able to leave the router on and switch between the two OSes. Try it. Worst thing that can happen is that you would need to restart the router.

  • 802.1x Authentication on Wired and Wireless LAN

I have successfully configured 802.1x authentication on wired and wireless Lan. We have Cisco Switches, ACS SE and Windows AD.
But i have one issue regarding the Single Sign on while authentication using the 802.1x with Windows Active directory the users that are login first time not able to logon but the users that have their profiles already existed in their PC then there is no issue and they successfully authenticated and login easily.
Is there any way of login successfully for the users first time using 802.1x authentication with Windows AD like a Single Sign On?

We ran into the same situation from time to time. We implemented 802.1x authentication using the Cisco Secure Services Client (SSC) on the windows hosts.
At the beginning we were completly unable to logon on the maschines where no locally stored windows profile exists. After change to timeout to authenticate at the network in the SSC options we are able to logon to the network and also be authenticated by the domain controller.
Sadly this works out often as a timing issue. Most times the user needs to try a couple of times. At the moment, I'm also very interessted in a good way to avoid this (as it seems to be) racecondition.
Hope that someone else has any clue?

  • How to use airport express wired and wireless at the same time

    Hi,
I currently have FiOS with Verizon, they ran a coax cable to the Verizon router. I didn't ask them to switch to CAT6 cable since I have an airport extreme base station and an airport express base station (both are the newest generation). I ran a CAT6 cable from the Verizon FiOS router to my AEBS (extreme) to make it the default wireless router. The Verizon router and extreme are in one room. Now, the Airport express is in my living. I'd like to extend the wireless network from the extreme. However, I can't seem to find a way to use both wired and wireless from the airport express at the same time. It's now either via wired, or wiresless. So is there a way to get both work?

Can you tell us if you used Apple's instructions for a "roaming" network?
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4260
Although the instructions picture a 2nd AirPort Extreme in the illustrations, the setup instructions would be exactly the same for an AirPort Express.

  • NAC Guest server for wired and wireless

    Hi
My customer wants the NGS to install for both wired and wireless users. For wireless users we can integrate it with the WLC but i don't know how it will work for wired users at the same time. Pls suggest.
    Thanks

    Hi Vishal,
Please note that if you want to return ACLs (and usually in wired web auth you need to), you will have to integrate with ACS as NGS itself cannot return ACLs in the reply radius attributes.
Basically the process is as follows:
1 - Client plugs cable on switch.
2 - Web auth is triggered on the port.
3 - default ACL permiting only DNS and DHCP is applyed so that the client PC can obtain IP address and open a browser.
4 - Client will be redirected to the NGS hotspot login page.
5 - Client will enter credentials.
6 - Client broswer will send an HTTP POST packet containing the credentials.
7 - The switch will intercept the POS packets and retrieve the credentials entered.
8 - The switch will send Radius Access-Request to the ACS.
9 - The ACS will use the NGS as External Identity source to authenticate the client.
10 - The NGS will reply with Radius Access-Accept to the ACS and the ACS will reply to the switch including the ACL in the Access-Accept.
11 - the Switch authorizes the client on the port and applies the ACL it received from the ACS.
Please follow the document Nicolas posted as it is a good one.
    HTH,
    Thanks

  • DHCP Server - Different Range for Wired and Wireless Network

We have DHCP setup on Windows Server 2012r2 and the range given to us by the main HQ is 10.65.112.1-10.65.112.254 (there are several exclusions under this range)
Now since the range gets exhausted quickly, they provided another one 10.65.122.1-10.65.122.254.
What our branch would love to do is to dedicate the first range for Wired Computers and the other range for Wireless Devices (Phone,Tablets, Mobiles)
Right now we have 2 different scopes setup in DHCP, the second one is disabled. In our network we have 6 access points and also have a CISCO SG300-52 Managed Switch. It has an inbuilt DHCP Server and also has the function for DHCP Relay. But we are not actually using any of its functionality as of now.
So my question is how to have 2 separate ranges for wired and wireless network. People have mentioned vlans but I have no clue on how to get that done.
Is there a simpler way avoding V-LANS or if not, would love to get step by step procedure on how to go about this. Any help will be much appreciated
    Regards,
    Sheldon

Hi Sheldon, please read this post
    https://supportforums.cisco.com/thread/2270049
You will need some modifications though. Steps 1-6 is very relevant. On step 6, you need to pay particular close attention to the "default router". If the SX300 handles your intervlan routing then the default router needs to be the IP of your VLAN. If you have a different device to handle VLAN routing then the default router needs to be that IP address.

A Windows 7 Pro 64bit laptop with Outlook 2010 keeps disconnecting from the exchange when switching from wired to wireless or vice versa. Then it wont reconnect. Restarting Outlook occasionaly works, not all the time.
Holding CTRL and clicking the Outlook symbol in the notifcation area they connection status and reconnect doesn't work either.
The only way it will reconnect apart from restarting the machine is to restart the Microsoft Exchange Information Store service on our Exchange server.
