New Apple laptop...

I bought my iBook G4 back in the winter of 2004. It's about two years and a half old now. My computing needs are basic: Internet, email, iTunes, iCal, iPhoto, typing documents, editing family DV footage, watching DVD, keeping everything organized on the go, etc. I know my iBook has a long life span to come, but I am attracted to the new Macbook Pro. More RAM, Bigger HD, built-in iSight, Intel CPU, glossy display, among other things. As I type this it seems to me I am being extravagant and I don't really need a Macbook Pro. But Apple drives me crazy! For me own needs Macbook seems to be a more reasonable choice. But Appearance-wise my opinion is that iBook G4 looks better than Macbook. Macbook's keyboard is awkward. And why should I have two machines which are almost identical as far as my needs are concerned. The real reason for acquiring a MacBook Pro is that I love its solid build and appearance. Also, I think the glossy display makes better DVD/video viewing. But my iBook G4 serves me well and I wonder how I should divide my computing needs between the two machines if I should buy a Macbook Pro. Besides, I have a tight budget. Apple often succeeds in making me buy what I don't really need. Were you in my shoes, what would you do?

iBook fan,
If you buy any new Apple portable, regardless of which one, your old G4 iBook is going to end up sitting on a shelf, permanently. The new portables are so much faster, with much better graphics and displays, that you will find little attraction in using your iBook again.
Now, all that said, it is conceivable that you could find a way to keep your iBook in use. For example, you might opt for a 17" MBP, which would be slightly less portable than your iBook (I have a 17" MBP, and I carry it everywhere I go, but that's me). In such a case, you would have an extravagantly lovely Apple notebook computer, which could go with you when needed, but might not be as easy to tote as your iBook. This would make the iBook a bit more attractive in cases where portability is a serious issue, and it might mean that you use the iBook more than you would otherwise.
In the end, however, I think a Macbook would be a better replacement for your iBook. I don't think having more than one portable is extravagant, but I do think it will be one more than you will use.

While transferring my Documents from my desktop to my new Apple laptop through a memory stick all of my documents were lost. I cannot find them anywhere...What happened?

If I'm reading this right, you copied the Documents folder from your User account to a memory stick? How big was the Documents folder?
How did you carry out the copy?
Drag and drop from user account to stick? - This should copy the data leaving the originals on your desktop Mac.
⌘-drag from user account to stick? - This would move the files - copy them over, then delete the originals.
Entire folder at one go or a few files at a time?
Assuming that you used the memory stick as received (straight out of the pack) it would almost certainly be formatted FAT32 or even FAT16 so it can be used onWindows or Mac. There are file size limits with both those formats, which could cause problems, but I'm not sure complete loss of data would result.

  • New Apple laptops, power cords and batteries

Eventually, my parents' white MacBook is going to wear out and need to be replaced. I am keeping an eye on the discount deals for refurbished laptops on the Apple Store. I may also have to do some business traveling in the future, necessitating that I get a laptop as well for on-the-road computing.
    A few necessary questions:
1: If they order a refurb MacBook Air, where do you go to find an extra AC plug-in cord?
2: Are there any cigarette-lighter-adaptor plug-in kits available for the current generation of Apple laptops, so that a laptop could be operated/battery topped off while in a vehicle or on an airplane?
3: What about connecting to AC power while traveling outside the US? If an Apple laptop user goes to, say, Europe (Germany, UK, France, Denmark, etc.) does he/she have to carry a special connection kit along to plug-into AC wall power?
4: What are the realistic longevity/operational lifespan expectations for Apple's current laptop batteries? How many years should these batteries last, and how expensive are they to have Apple replace?
    Thanks in advance!

Apple's Online Store or a local Apple retailer.
2: Are there any cigarette-lighter-adaptor plug-in kits available for the current generation of Apple laptops, so that a laptop could be operated/battery topped off while in a vehicle or on an airplane?
Yes there are such animals for cars. I don't know about airplanes.

The power unit auto-switches from 110 to 220 v systems. All one needs is a wall outlet plug adaptor. They are available in Apple's World Travel Kit as well as from most AAA travel stores.
4: What are the realistic longevity/operational lifespan expectations for Apple's current laptop batteries? How many years should these batteries last, and how expensive are they to have Apple replace?
Impossible to say since the answer depend upon usage. All we know is the battery's lifespan is supposedly around 1000 full charge cycles.

if you're happy with your Mac, and it's running like it should, keep using it.
On the other hand, the new Mac OS X Mavericks is due out sometime this fall. If you're thinking of a new Mac you may want to wait until you can purchase one with Mavericks pre installed.

Disable automatic sync in iTunes, connect your phone, backup manually. Transfer your purchases.
When you sync for the first time iTunes content and photos will be deleted. Your backup in itunes will be used to get your data back to the phone after the first sync.

  • I signed for a trial CC a week ago when I got a new apple laptop, I had to exchange the laptop...

due to technical faults. How does this affect my trial?

In iTunes on your computer, select the Purchased section under STORE in the left column. Click on the first track and choose "Get Info" from the "File" menu.
In the "Summary" tab you'll see details of the purchaser of the track. Click Next to go through all your purchased music one by one until you find the ones you need to get rid of.
Unfortunately, there are no smart playlist rules that can filter tracks by the purchaser that I know of.

  • Transfer software from Mac Pro 1,1 to apple laptop, possible?

Is it possible to transfer all files and software from a Mac Pro 1,1 to a new apple laptop (I havent decided which model yet)? I do not have all the original CDs for some of the software...will they still work?

The general answer is, Yes. You can use Migration Assistant or Setup Assistant to make the transfer of your Home folder, third-party applications and support files, and system preferences.
But not all licensed software will work. Some software is smart enough to know it's been moved and will ask you to enter the registration number. In this case you will need to contact the developer about obtaining a new one or copy of the old one.
I suggest using the Setup Assistant that appears when you startup the new computer for the first time. You will need to have the two computers connected. The best way for this is to use Firewire 800. That requires that the new computer has a Firewire port. Some do not. These models have only Thunderbolt ports. To use them you will need both a Thunderbolt cable and Apple's Thunderbolt to Firewire adaptor.

  • I have iTunes on my laptop but it is registered to an apple id for an ipod which I have not used/owned for years.  How do I add my new apple id which I use on my iPhone to my iTunes on my laptop?

I recently purchased two songs which refuse to download on my iPhone 4s.  Other songs from the same albums downloaded just fine.  In an attempt to recover these songs I opened iTunes on my laptop which I have not used since I sold my ipod years ago.  The iTunes on my computer is associated with an old Apple ID that was connected to my iPod.  How do I get my new Apple ID synced with the iTunes on my laptop?

    Hello Leanna,
Thank you for the details of the issue you are experiencing.  You can sign into iTunes with your Apple ID using these steps:
Use your Apple ID with the iTunes Store
Open the latest version of iTunes.
    Choose Store > Sign In.
Enter your Apple ID and password and click Sign In.
Click Review when asked to review your information.
    Enter your billing information.
Click Continue after you enter your credit card and billing information. You can remove or edit your credit card information at any time. Learn more about updating your iTunes Store account information.

You will also need to authorize your computer to play purchases with this Apple ID:
    Open iTunes
From the Store menu, choose Authorize This Computer. (In earlier versions of iTunes, access this option from the Advanced menu).
When prompted, enter your Apple ID and password, then click Authorize.

With the latest version of iTunes on Windows, the menu bars are hidden, so you may need to enable them to get to the Store menu.  You can follow these steps to enable the menu bars:
To keep the iTunes menus active, change the setting by selecting the Menu icon in the upper-left, and then selecting Show Menu Bar. Alternatively, you can press Control-B.

I had Premier pro given me by the college I attend and do no use wi fi and do not use cloud. My laptop completely died and will be sent back to Apple for exchange. How can I reinstall Premier Pro on a new Apple computer since the old one is completly dead and could not be unregistered?

    Hi,
You have not specified which version of Premiere Pro was given to you. If you don't have the disc (which i suppose you don't have) you will have to download it online.
As far as your registration is concerned, for Premiere Pro CS6 or earlier you will have to reach Adobe chat support for further help: http://helpx.adobe.com/contact.html
For Premiere Pro CC and later, you will not have much problems reactivating it.
    Thanks,
    Rameez
