New Canon HV10 HD Camcorder

I just purchased a Canon HV10 HiDef camcorder and am having problems capturing video in Final Cut Pro. I'm using the latest version of the software. I have changed the settings under final cut>easy setup> to HD1080i50. It goes through the whole capture process but when I hit escape it says there is an unknown error and won't capture. I'm able to capture video in iMovie, but then have to export in order to use the video in Final Cut Pro. Does anyone have any ideas? Thanks.

Please do not double post. Once is enough.

  • Best price for a new Canon XL H1 camcorder to go with CS3.

    Hi all,
I want to get a good price on a Canon XL H1 to go with CS3.
Has anyone heard of or has done business with "trustedphoto.com" or "express cameras.com"?
They are advertising a Canon XL H1 for $3499 when the lowest prices I've seen from most other vendors is about $6300 to $7300 and up.
    regards,

A sure fire way to get ripped off is to think that - just because it is on the internet - you can find quality equipment at half the market value. Don't be a sucker - these sites are all over the web jsut waiting for naive buyers to come in and get taken.
B&H = 100% quality and they tell you up front what is gray market or US product. I've purchased thousands of dollars of video and photographic equipment from B&H, and they always deliver the goods as promised.

  • New Mac Mini + reinstalled FCE4 = no capture from my Canon HV10?

I used to have an iMac 24" with FCE4, and then I switched to a 2010 Mac Mini 2.4GHz 4GB and reinstalled FCE4.
I don't remember exactly what the menu options looked like for capturing in the past, but I do recall it was dead simple. I would select some sort of Capture menu item and it would start my firewire-connected Canon HV10 playing and capturing (while showing a 0-1sec delayed preview of what was being captured.
Now I have two capture menu entries: Capture Project..., and Capture... . Capture Project doesn't work (it errors about selection error, batch capture, no sequence), and Capture pops up this big window that I never recall seeing before along with an error: "Capture Preset must have a video or an audio digitizer set to capture. Please change to desired preset in the Audio/Video Settings." I'm not even sure where the Audio/Video settings are; they don't appear to be in User Preferences, System Settings, or Easy Setup. And incidentally, I have my Easy Setup set to AVCHD 1440x1080i60, which I believe is correct for my video camera.
I have confirmed that my machine sees the camera device in the Firewire list:
    HV10:
    Manufacturer: Canon
    Model: 0x10
    GUID: 0x85000124CAFB
Maximum Speed: Up to 100 Mb/sec
Connection Speed: Up to 100 Mb/sec
    Sub-units:
    HV10 Unit:
    Unit Software Version: 0x10001
    Unit Spec ID: 0xA02D
    Suggestions? Thanks in advance.

Thanks for the fast and correct solution! I don't know why I got the setup wrong this time, or for that matter why I got it right on my previous install
Now that I have configured my Easy Setup the way you described, my capture works just as it did before.
    Thanks!

  • Canon HF G10 Camcorder - "Cannot Record" error message when trying to make new recordings

    Hi All,
I purchased Canon HF G10 camcorder 6 months ago and suddenly I am getting a "Cannot Record" error message each time I press the record button - it simply stopped working and I am puzzled about this - has anyone else faced this problem? if yes, were you able to resolve it? Any insights or torubleshooting guidance will be greatly appreciated.
    Best regards,
    Rajiv Arora.

    ra33,
I am very glad to help you with this.
According to the specifications in the user manual, this model records to the internal memory by default in any shooting mode.  You can manually select to record to the SD cards, but only in the Manual or Cinema modes.  If you are shooting in Auto, clearing out some of the internal memory should stop the "Cannot Record" message from appearing.
If there is anything else I can help you with, please let me know.

  • IMovie 5 and Canon HV10

This question is somewhat related to one below and so i apologize for any overlap. I am thinking about buying a Canon HV10 Hi Def camcorder. To this point, I store home videos on 2 media: 1) miniDV tape and DVD converted from the miniDV tape via iMovie and iDVD. A newspaper article in the Ann Arbor News states that iMovie will support HD content from the Canon HV10. And so my question is 1) Is this true ? and 2) If it is true, is there a way to convert the iMovie made from miniDV tape to iDVD or must I leave it in iMovie form ? If I can transfer the iMovie to iDVD, will I lose the hi definition ? Thanks in advance.

    hey there ndbob79,
iMovie HD should be able to deal w/ the HDV format just fine. there are presently no hi-def burners available that i'm aware of & iDVD 5 doesn't support hi-def anyway, so yes you would lose the hi-def. iDVD will convert your movie to standard def(SD) for burning in iDVD. it's been my experience though that like other visual media starting out w/ a higher res format/image(HD) i end up w/ a better product when i compress/shrink it(DVD) as opposed to starting out lower res format/image(SD) & compressing it(DVD). i've made a couple of HDV to DVD discs w/ my Sony A1-U & been pretty happy w/ the results. i am however waitng for a prosumer BD burner.
also in iDVD 6 there are widescreen themes which are kinda cool, but seeing as it's now 2007, you may want to wait for iLife 07 to upgrade your iLife suite as there are sure to be more cool, fun things there.
you'll want a pretty beefy Mac w/ at least 2 GB RAM for anything close to real-time ingest of HDV. i've 2.5 GB on my DP G5.
    good luck.

  • Canon HV10 or Sony HDR-HC3 for iMovie HD 6

    In case you're interested…
I'm in the process of reviewing both the Canon HV10 and the Sony HDR-HC3. Both use Mini DV tapes. I've heard hard disk models don't work with iMovie HD6.
I've tried both on my Intel iMac at 2.16 Gz and this is what happened…
    Sony HC3
I used Firewire cable (must be Firewire - Sony calls it iLink) and plugged in the cam with iMovie already opened. Clicked to the camera icon and… Nothing happened. There was no recognition of the camcorder at all. Zilch. I fiddled, checked the camcorder's audio was set to 16bit and changed several prefences in iMovie but still nothing. I had previously set the cam's time too. I've since learned the HC3 and many other Sony's are incompatible with iMovie HD. It's a lovely camcorder but unless you download some extra software – as mentioned in the forums – it ain't gonna work.
    Canon HV10
Performed the same Firewire connections and, lo, the camcorder was detected and I was able to begin importing HD visuals. But then… On immediate playback after importing I noticed the audio was running at half speed – subtley – the visuals too. I spent hours shooting short bits, importing them with other settings, and every time voices came out low and slurred. My wife sounded like a bloke. I posted the problem here and someone told me the HD takes a long time to render. So bear that in mind. And don't be impatient like me.
In this instance, the Canon wins.
    Apple iMac 2.16   Mac OS X (10.4.8)
    Apple iMac 2.16   Mac OS X (10.4.8)
    Apple iMac 2.16   Mac OS X (10.4.8)
    Apple iMac 2.16   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

I'm really confused now. I've set the HC3's settings to HDV (not Auto) and the iLink Conv to OFF. And still no joy. I've even tried 'Magic Movie' for which it searched for a camera but found nothing. I know the Firewire cable works because I've used it on the Canon and my own, older Digital-8 Sony Handycam.

  • Has anyone used the new Panasonic HDC-HS300 camcorder with FCE4 yet?

I'm thinking of buying this new high definition camcorder, but would like to know whether anyone has used it: does the log/transfer manner of getting video into final cut espress work?
I'm also interested in whether anyone has used the new Canon LEGRIA HF S10, with the same question.
    thanks,
    Steve

Both of the cameras you provided links to should work fine with FCE. For the Canon and Panasonic cameras, you would use Log and Transfer to import the footage. This should work very smoothly as long as you shoot using 60i so it is compatible with the sequence in FCE. I use an AVCHD camcorder similar to the Canon you are looking at an it is working great for me.
    Things to keep in mind:
    1. Both HDV and AVCHD footage need to be converted to AIC in FCE upon capture/ingestion. FCE will do this automatically, but be prepared for large file sizes. A 15 minute project I created on my AVCHD camcorder at 1920x1080 took up about 15-20 GB of memory once converted to AIC.
    2. If you get an HDV or DV camera you will use Capture, not Log and Transfer.
    3. Becaues of the way AVCHD footage works, when FCE imports it the program creates intermediate frames between the ones the camera captures. This is normally OK but might be a problem for fast action shots.
    4. As Ian said, unless you plan to invest in more expensive equipment the DVDs you burn will actually be SD, not HD. I do this in iDVD and I have always been happy with the results.
So I guess it is up to you: Do you prefer to shoot on tape or hard-drive, use firewire or USB to upload? If the answer is tape, firewire then HDV is for you. If hard-disc, USB, choose AVCHD. In the end it comes down to your personal preference. All of the cameras you have mentioned should be fine working with FCE.

  • Final Cut Pro HD (4.5) compatability with Canon HV10

I got a great deal and read reviews from Mac sources regarding the Canon HV10. There was some question about the camcorder, but as an introduction into the world of HDV, I thought I could work with it for my specific needs and I did get a pretty decent price.
BUT, iMovie in my OSX Leopard which I just installed recognizes the camera BUT it comes in all bright green and pink even though the playback in the cam looks normal, and Final Cut Pro HD (4.5) just won't see the HV10, even with the HDV/DV cable they require you to purchase.
Do I have to update Final Cut Pro? Is this something that is just not going to work with the FCP 4.5?
Any help would be seriously appreciated.
    Thanks so much.
    Rod

FCP4.5 does not do HDV. You need either iMovie8, FCE 4 or FCStudio 2 for that codec.

When i connect camcorder to computer idvd opens up and i can watch videos, but i can't import to imovie. This has been very frustrating. Can anyone help me with this problem. • IMOVIE 4 and Canon HV10 Connecting problems

Hello. I just purchased the Canon HV10 due to many people saying it is one of the most compatible with imovie. However, when I start up the camera and imovie using the 4 pin 6 pin connector, imovie continues to say "no camera connected".
Do I need to upgrade to imovie 6, since my camcorder is an hd?
I have restarted both camera and computer numerous times, set the date and time on the camcorder, and any other tips mac gives and have still had no luck.
Any tips on how to get imovie to recognize my camera?
    Thanks!

Importing standard definition video from your HDV Camcorder to your computer trouble shooting suggestions.
1.) Set AV> DV set to off?
2.) Make sure "playback" is set to DV and "DV output" is set to DV locked.
3.) Make sure the Cam is not connect to USB at the same time when trying to import video.
4.) Make sure the Cam is the only firewire/iLink device connected.
Since your cam has 2 different systems (HDV & DV) I'm pretty sure your settings need to be exact.
BTW, What type of computer do you have? What version OS are you using eg. 10.?.??) and what version of Quicktime are you using (you should include this info in your profile)
Try these suggestions first if You want to stick with iMovie 4. Maybe you will need iMovie 6, I dunno.

  • Canon HV10 Not Recognized By Final Cut Express HD

Final Cut Express will not initialize my new HV10. iMovie has no problem downloading so I do not believe it is my computer, a Dual 2.3 GHz Power PC. Anyone know if this a problem with the software?
    G5   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

    Not only Canon HV10,
my Sony HCR-HC3E also has this problem.
The quality of footage after capture is very poor.
When I use iMovie to capture the footage,
iMovie show that it is using the codec 1080i25.
Final Cut Express HD has not provide this codec,
    only has 1080i50 and 1080i60.
I have ask about this, the feedback is that there is no
    codec that call 1080i25.
    How can I do?

  • Anyone successfully using Canon HV10 HD camera with iChat?

    Hello,
I'm considering purchasing the Canon HV10 camera, but need to know whether using it as webcam works. The alternative choice would be the Sony HDR-HC3, which users on this forum have confirmed as working with iChat.
Thanks in advance for any feedback.
    Istvan

    Hi Istvan,
Some Canon cameras have a MiniDV format and do not work with iChat http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=61603
Though this list is now quite old I don't know what new cameras may have been added by Canon.
Sometimes it is the Tape Anti-stretch feature that turns the camera off if the tape is left inside.

  • Canon HV10 issues

Just bought a Canon HV10, got a 4:6 Firewire cable and hooked it up to my MacBook Pro but no video is importing. iMovie "sees" the camera and iMovie can control the playback (stop, start, etc.) but there is no video on the screen (it's blue) and nothing being imported. What am I missing?

Hi ..sorry; I was away for a couple of days..
"..the imported HD video in iMovie is in the Apple Intermediate Codec. The video imported into FCP is in HDV codec.." ..That's normal: iMovie uses the AIC to "rebuild" the missing MPEG-2 frames in which HD is recorded on the tape.
FCP is a different animal altogether, and doesn't need the AIC.
..Did you do a QuickTime upgrade which may have disturbed iMovie? ..I wouldn't bother re-installing the OS - that's a bit drastic! ..and you'd have to make sure that you re-installed using 'Archive and Install' so that you didn't lose any of your existing settings - but if you've recently applied a QuickTime update, I'd re-apply it, just to make sure that it 'sticks'.
I'm surprised that it won't capture HD if you start a new project with an existing HD clip (..which you've dragged in there from another project..) because playing an HD clip first, before importing more, usually convinces iMovie that it really can handle incoming HD.
Have you recently added any other codecs; Flip4Mac, DivX ..anything like that? If so, try removing them from wherever they may be (..probably one of your QuickTime>Plugins folders ..either within your username area, or in the main Library ..or possibly even in the System>Library..) and putting them somewhere else - like your Desktop - and then doing a restart.
Have you added a RealPlayer codec, or a WMV player? ..any of these might interfere with the AIC. Just reinstalling the AIC on its own might not 'take', and so it may be necessary (..if you had added extra video players..) to re-install iMovie HD 6, from your DVD or whatever it came on, and then doing the upgrade(s) again.
Sorry: I can't think of anything else just now which might fix it..
