New, charged 2nd gen Shuffle won't play--Windows XP, newest version iTunes

It is fully charged. It shows up under devices in iTunes (it says in Disk Manager though that it is "Apple iPod UBS device" which I believe is a bad thing). I click to load randomly. It shows as updating. I disconnect and try to play--nothing. I've tested to make sure it is not on hold. I've restored TWICE.
The other weird thing is that in the Contents section it shows my entire library--not what is supposedly on my shuffle.
Any suggestions?

Yes... select ALL the Contents and hit Delete. Now DRAG and DROP some songs onto the Shuffle from your library.
Disconnect, turn on, and hit PLAY.

  • 2nd gen shuffle won't play podcasts after upgrading to Itunes 7.2(34)

I use my shuffle to listen to podcasts only. Last week afer upgrading Itunes it stopped playing and the LED would flash alternating green and orange. I did the 5 R's apple recommends and it still would not work. I even downloaded Apple's Ipod Reset Utility, it still would not work. I took it to the Genius Bar at the apple store because it is only 3 months old and they gave me a new shuffle. After returning home and trying to sync the new shuffle to my podcasts it had the same problem as the previous shuffle. This got me to thinking it was something besides the shuffle. The only thing I could think of was the new version of Itunes. So I tried to put other things on there besides podcasts. I added itunes store bought music, both drm and drm free, mp3 and aac music that I ripped in itunes before and mp3 and aac podcasts that I have downloaded. The shuffle played all the music but skipped over the podcasts. Please help. I was able to play these podcasts before on the shuffle so the file type is not an issue. I can play the podcasts on my video Ipod. I can even play them on the shuffle via itunes when it is connected to my computer. I don't know what to do and I am seriously falling behind on my podcasts. Any tips would be appreciated

Hello FrayedSo, Sorry to read your having a difficult time with your shuffle and podcasts.
As you mentioned earlier this is your second shuffle and it is able to play songs you purchase or put onto it but it skips past the Podcasts.
Are you playing these podcasts as part of a Playlist? or is this happening in shuffle mode?
Some of the things you could do to possibly assist with troubleshooting your issue are below.
Make sure to Consolidate your iTunes Library so all your information is backed up to your iTunes Music folder. You can do this by going to Advanced-Consolidate Library.
To quote a part in Knowledge Base 30058
"Playing Audiobooks and podcasts on iPod shuffle
When iPod shuffle is set to shuffle songs it will play all the audio files on iPod shuffle that are not audiobooks. Podcasts of type .m4b or AAC will not play on iPod shuffle when it is in shuffle mode, which is the intended behavior, although a podcast of type .mp3 or .wav may play while in shuffle mode. To play an audiobook or podcast that is on iPod shuffle, set the switch on iPod shuffle to play in order."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=300558
Another thing you could try. Create a new user account on your Windows System and download some podcasts and sync it to your shuffle and see if the same issue occurs.

  • 2nd gen shuffle suddenly wont play music podcasts

Recently my 2nd generation iPod shuffle suddenly won't play some of my music podcasts.
It might have been after upgrading to iTunes 10.2.2 (12) that this started happening.
It still plays one of my other podcasts on it, but it's not playing the music ones, which is
what I use the shuffle for (running to podcasts on the treadmill).  Please help!
The podcasts it suddenly won't play are ones it has played in the past.  The shuffle is
having trouble reading them I think.  But then, maybe it has something to do with the
permissions on the podcasts?  I don't know.  They are all free ones.  I tried finding some
new ones to use, but the shuffle won't play them either.  They are playing fine in iTunes,
and they sync to the shuffle seemingly without problem.
When I try to advance the shuffle to the next track, it won't do so, it simply won't play
    some of these podcasts.
    Help would be much appreciated.
    Travis

oops problem solved.  found this after doing a bit more research.
The iPod shuffle won't play podcasts if it's in shuffle mode, it has to be switched to linear mode.
I switched mine to linear mode and voila, it works.  I must have accidentally switched it to shuffle
mode without realizing.  Now all my podcasts are playing fine.  yay.

  • Ipod touch 2nd gen. Won't play videos anymore-all purchase on ITUNES

All of sudden my touch is not syncing any of the videos I purchased on ITUNES. I tried reset-nothing. I don't have the ability to convert via itunes-it won't highlight that option. These were on my ipod-some even purchased on the ipod then transfered. Once transfered they disappear off the ipod and stay on itunes and then I get an error saying format doesn't work. I was able to watch them when I downloaded direct into ipod.
I've seen similar post but nothing seemed to be exactly what I have. Can anyone help?

    - Do they play on the computer?
    Try:
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.

  • 2nd gen shuffle not working windows 7

I connected my 2nd gen shuffle to my laptop (Windows 7) and it told me I need to restore it, but Itunes keeps crashing every time i tried. I restared my pc, then it stopped showing in Itunes but showed on devices, and was on. Now it does nothing at all, no lights or anything. Any help appreciated

I have two suggestions.  There is an iPod Reset Utility
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1238
that is only for the 1st and 2nd gen shuffle.  It does something like a Restore in iTunes, but works at a "lower" level in cases when a Restore in iTunes does not work (or cannot be used).  For it to work, the shuffle does need to be seen by the system, and it sounds like yours meets that requirement.
Unfortunately, I don't think it works with Windows 7.  If you happen to have an older PC with 32-bit Windows, you can use that PC to run the utility on the shuffle.  Or, maybe you have a friend with a Mac or 32-bit Windows PC that can run it for your.  Or, if you have an Apple Store nearby, you can make a reservation at the Genius Bar and ask them to look at it and run the reset utility.
The second suggestion, if you don't have a convenient way to use the reset utility, is to use Windows to reformat the shuffle's storage like it was a flash drive.  Use a "full" format (not the "quick" option).  Use the "FAT" format type.  Make sure iTunes is NOT running.  After it is reformatted, it will be blank.  When you run iTunes, it should recognize the shuffle and ask you to Restore it (to re-install the software and set it to default settings).  Hopefully, it will work this time.

  • 2nd gen shuffle blinks orange 3x then doesnt charge, isnt detected

I have had and used my Ipod Shuffle for a couple months now and I go to plug my Ipod Shuffle into the USB dock and the Ipod light blinks orange three times and nothing happens after that. The Ipod is not detected by my computer or by Itunes. The Ipod does not charge at all. Because the Ipod is not detected by Itunes or anything else for that matter, I can't upload or organize any of my songs on the Ipod. I have tried all of the solutions I can find related to Apple and Ipod. None have worked. I uninstalled Itunes from my computer and then reinstalled it and nothing happened. I want to find the answer to my pesky problem because I don't want to have to buy another MP3 player. Please help me fix this problem. Any ideas or suggestions?

I had the exact problem occur with a 2nd gen shuffle less than 24 hours old. I had just bought my kids each one of these. After loading them both with songs, one of them would no longer be recognized by either of my PC's. When plugged in to the docking station, the light on the ipod would blink orange 3x, and then, nothing. The PC would not play the normal something-was-just-plugged-into-the-USB-port sound. The other shuffle connected fine, using the same USB port and docking station. Strange enough, the ipod that refused to be recognized would still play the music that had already been loaded before the problem started. However, since it was not being recognized by the PC or iTunes, I figured it was not going to take a charge, and would just be a matter of 12-14 hours before the thing was dead for good. I took it back to Best Buy and exchanged it for a new one. This time I purchased the 2-year replacement contract (something I rarely do). Probably a good bet, as a couple of hours later, the sound of the newly-replaced shuffle cuts in and out when the headphone wire is touched. I wonder how many of these cute little guys my kids will go through in the next two years...

  • 2nd gen shuffle no lights when charging

i have a 2nd gen  shuffle. i had to get a new computer and downloaded V11. my itunes works but i CANNOT sync to my shuffle. any ideas????

The latest iTunes may hide the sidebar by default.  To show the sidebar, from the iTunes menu bar, under View, select Show Sidebar.
With the sidebar visible on the left side of the iTunes window, when you connect the shuffle, does it appear in the sidebar, under DEVICES?
Since this is a 2nd gen shuffle, are you using the original USB cable that came with the shuffle, with the mini-dock at the shuffle end?  A USB cable that is for the 3rd or 4th gen shuffle will not work; the connector is different.

  • Do New Earphones work with the 2nd Gen Shuffle?

So my dog chewed up my 2nd Gen Ipod Shuffle earphones and I wanted to replace them. When I went to the the apple online store they are only selling the new earphones for the 3rd Gen Shuffle, that has a remote and a mic. It only says it supports the 3rd Gen Shuffle. Would I still be able to hear music on the new earphones? I don't really care about the remote and mic capabilities.
Here's the link to the 3rd Gen Earphones:

YES! I just used my 3rd Gen (replacement) earphones with my 2nd Gen
shuffle this evening... they worked fine.

  • I have 2nd gen shuffle, i am using a new USB to connect to my computer but the light does not come on and itunes does not bring it up?

I have a 2nd gen shuffle. I bought a new USB for it at the apple store last week. They said it would work with the the 2nd Gen shuffle. I have the shuffle plugged in to the computer now. It wont light up and itunes is not reconizing it. Please help!

I would bring it back to the Apple Store and have them test it out on one of their one machines to see if it'll work or not there.

  • 2nd gen shuffle wouldn't sync - fixed it (for me)

With 2nd gen shuffle, changed computers, downloaded ITunes 9, created new playlists, got all ready... and shuffle won't sync. Would start syncing, then quit after trying a couple songs, then some kind of error - folder not found or something like that. Tried it over and over in different variations. Looked thru google and tried resetting ipod, uninstall/reinstalling itunes (couple times), uninstalled intunes 9 and used itunes 7 (which someone recommended), searched thru apple support and tried things - same problem. Noticed in Explorer that the Ipod wasn't being detected consistently - would show briefly, then disappear so figured there was some problem with the computer recognizing the device, even though IPOD was recognized in ITunes. Went to Apple discussions looking for "recognizing ipod" and found http://support.apple.com/kb/ts1369; which I had seen earlier, but blew it off as not relevant because ipod was recognized in ITunes.
For me, appears that I didn't have shuffle connected to a high-power USB port - just plugged it into first one I saw, which wasn't high-power; did change ports earlier, but didn't know I had high-power ones (or needed them) available in another part in the back of computer. Changed ports and it worked - synced up like it used to.
Hope this helps others - I spent 3 days researching internet, trying variety of different things and being PO'ed - and music-less.

I think it was just that itunes was running- but can't disable that.  I ended up just taking about 30 mins to delete each song individually from the shuffle. Hopfully it will work for the kiddo we are giving it too.  Thanks for your suggestion!

  • 2nd gen shuffle disk format FAT32 on a mac?

    Guys,
my incredibly stable quad g5 has gone "nuts" since I've had my 2nd gen shuffle. It hangs, won't mount external USB drives if the 2nd gen shuffle is docked during startup, lots of other really weird things.
The shuffle was delivered to my work, so the shuttle was 1st connected to a Windows box, but just to charge it fully.
when the shuffle is connected to the quad, it only actually shows in iTunes about 25% of the time... whether or not it shows up in iTunes, I can see an "iPod" on the USB bus. I've got lots of USB 2.0 powered ports... changing ports doesn't make a difference at all.
according to iTunes, the software version is 1.01, which was updated from the shipping 1.00 while connected to the Windows machine. (this might have been a bad thing to do)
when the shuffle is connected to iTunes, despite the fact that the checkbox allow disk access, most of the time I still see the shuttle mounted as a drive volume. When it doesn't show up, I can still see the drive briefly mount and unmount if I toggle settings or do anything with the shuttle.
obviously, I've tried restore(s) from the quad, which resets the contents of the shuttle but doesn't change the disk format.
the shuttle itself operates as expected, it's only while it's docked to the quad that all heck breaks loose...
    Any ideas???
    Thanks

ah... well, I've already restored one of the times that it was connected to a proper 2.0 powered USB port.
the first time, it wouldn't come back from the reflashed state, ie it didn't reconnect to iTunes...
I disconnected, it had no songs on it, but it seemed to work... after a number of attempts to dock, it finally did, and I pumped a bunch of song over to it and it worked...
I then retried that sequence and the update worked fine.
it's still a strange beast. for example... although no disk access is allowed, it still mounts a shuffle icon onto the desktop, just no folders are visible... strange...
I've chosen to downsample to 128kbit AAC, and I'm not having iTunes autofill the shuffle. I unselected the downsample option and clicked apply. one would think that the data on the shuffle would stay as is. Nope, it wiped the shuffle and tried to put the songs that were there back on the shuffle at the original bitrates, which of course don't fit. Reselect the downsample option, click apply, and it repeats the wipe of the shuffle, and is now (again) downsampling and sending to the shuffle. Since it's on the keyboard USB port right now, this is taking quite a while.
I'll def try on other machines, and indeed without the USB drives mounted, ah, sorry, can't really do that on the quad... the iTunes library is on one of the external USB drives...
anyway, I get what you want me to try... it might be tomorrow before I can repeat the sequence enough times to say something conclusive. This has been going on for a few days already... I've restarted the quad more times since Thursday than I have in the last year!
I'm not panicking yet, but am extremely curious what is causing this problem.
Once again, thanks... I try some more tests and post back
    Michael

  • IPod Shuffle won't play in sequence

Playing my tracks on the first position, which is supposed to play tracks in order, the same three tracks (of fourteen or so) played in a circle after my first synch; now, after my second, each track simply plays repeatedly.
The only way to avoid this I've found is to used the voice-over button, and select each track in turn when the one I've just listened to starts its repeat.
Is there a fix for this, (I've already used the iTunes reset (or whatever it's called) button, which made no difference), or should I return the iPod to the shop?
    Many thanks for any help.

It's important to note that the 1st and 2nd gen shuffle is a very simple device.  It acts like a single playlist and you load it manually using iTunes.  Then you play that one and only playlist in random order or playlist order.
The 3rd and 4th gen shuffle is designed to be more like the "big" iPods.  You can set it up for automatic syncing and it can have multiple playlists on it.  Because it does not have a screen, you use VoiceOver to "navigate" and select the playlist you want to use.  The default playlist is the All Songs list.
It's important to distinguish the terms "podcast" from "episode."  The individual items on the shuffle are podcast episodes.  Each podcast (all episodes on the shuffle from the same podcast) acts as a separate playlist, with the episodes of the podcast on the list.  When you use VoiceOver, those podcasts are on VoiceOver playlist menu.  So, you do not need to create a playlist with podcast episodes. NOTE:  When you select a podcast using VoiceOver, it does not matter if the power switch is set to shuffle or play-in-order.
HOWEVER, if you want to replicate how the old shuffle works, you can create a playlist on the shuffle, and call it "iPod Podcasts" (or whatever you want).  That one playlist is equal to your old shuffle.  If you are loading the shuffle manually (by dragging items to the shuffle), you need to create the playlist in iTunes ON THE SHUFFLE, so that it appears on the shuffle's content list (indented below the shuffle in the sidebar).  When you manually load the podcasts to the shuffle, instead of dragging the episodes to the overall shuffle, drag them to that playlist.  You can then select the playlist (on the shuffle's content list) and adjust the playlist order as desired.  So, it is like loading your old shuffle, except you are acting on a single playlist on the shuffle instead of the overall shuffle.
When using the shuffle, use VoiceOver to select that "iPod Podcasts" playlist.  Now, just like the old shuffle, to play podcasts, the power switch needs to be in the play-in-order position.  So, when you are in that playlist, it works like your old shuffle.
The benefit of the new shuffle is that you can create multiple playlists.  So, if you want a few songs on the shuffle, create a playlist called "iPod Songs" and put your favorites songs on it.  They are kept separate from the podcasts, and you can switch back and forth between the two playlists using VoiceOver.
