New features on old iPhone 3G?

Since the new 3G S came out it has all those new things. Are they going to have the video camera on the 3.0 update for the original 3G phone or just with the new one and is the voice control only available for the 3G S? They didn't really specify in the keynote at WWDC.

Apple regularly rejects apps that provide video recording functionality without providing clear or reasonable explanation and its just plain frustrating.
The hardware can handle video recording, working applications are out there but get blocked at the gates of the iTunes store (ividcam being a prime example). One could conclude that Apple's spurious arguments regarding API's are a smokescreen given that Apple regularly allows distribution of Apps which do everything from zap battery life to crash the phone but when it comes to video recording Apps they find reasons to reject them even if they are stable. Based on the 3G S announcement one might also conclude that these rejections have been a deliberate effort to control features on existing iphones so that new hardware can be more easily sold.
It's hard to fault apple for wanting to sell new products (and we love to buy them) but it's harder not to find fault with the way they go about it. Why not be direct with customers about the technical problems with this functionality and / or sell the video camera through iTunes store as a native app ... at 30 bucks I bet apple sells a lot of them, makes a tidy profit and makes a lot of current customers very happy... and in a year or two when those customer decide they want a new phone I bet the new iphone will be the one they choose.
Oh, so the unanswered question is what specific problem does video recording cause the current iphone 3G and how is this problem significantly worse than problems caused by other cpu intensive apps?

  • New features iOS6 on iPhone 4.

    Hello to all forum members,
reading the various news that Apple will bring on new iOS 6 that several of these won't be available on iPhone 4 as flyover, navigator and facetime of cellular network. Would be a shame if it were really so not including these features even on iPhone 4. I hope that Apple engineers will assess about this choice because in my opinion, the majority of users would be disappointed, including me, if things remain like this.

  • ITunes 9.2.1 New Feature: Sync with iPhone 4 on-the-go?????

The following was the first of a few new features in iTunes 9.2.1:
"Sync with iPhone 4 to enjoy your favorite music, movies, TV shows, books and more on-the-go"
Can someone who owns an iPhone 4 and has updated to iTunes 9.2.1 explain what this feature is?

    Hello, I have the same problem! (iTunes 9.0.1.8 iPhone 3G 3.1.2 (7D11) Windows7 64bit msi EX630 notebook)
My temporally solution is bit anoying but simple!
Everything is closed just iTunes is opened. System performance is set to max level.
So transfer Your music just 1 album at once!
So if You have 4albums to transfer just make it four times. If you transfer single tracks then make it just 8 or 10 songs at once.
I don't know why it works but it works for Me...!
ps: Apple need really fix this! It is annoying!

  • New features added, old features removed

I've seen many users who has asked why the new firmware removed some good features and so on... So I have this thread, and hope that answer you all.
the phone ROM is basically fix, say 128MB ROM and the available ROM for user is 44MB (say in the spec or manufacturer's spec) which means 84MB is used for the ROM.
So if a new feature is added then they have to remove or shrink something to maintain that 44MB available for users as the spec.
Also bugs and problem fix could cause the increment of ROM... unless it's extra install file or patches (which also takes up some space either in ROM or memory card)
    Cheers

  • New Mac. Old iPhone HELP ME PLEASE

I recently purchased a new MacBook after my old PC was distroyed
But i now am faced with the problem of getting my old songs/videos/apps/contacts ect. onto my mac!
Does anyone have maybe some sort of a hacker program that will allow me to transfer all of the things on my iPhone onto my iTunes on my new mac?
    Please and Thank you!

If it was purchased via iTunes just go File > Transfer purchases. Otherwise it's probably faster to reimport from your CD's and with a newer computer and you can set them to import at a higher bitrate so you get better quality.

  • New Features for the IPhone??

I don't understand why Apple just can' let IPhone 3G users just download the video feature instead of having people buy a new phone.

"I don't understand why Apple just can' let IPhone 3G users just download the video feature "
You don't have to understand it for it to be so.
"instead of having people buy a new phone."
You don't have to buy it. You could ( I know this sounds absurd, but) live without a cell phone that takes video.

  • Using new Mac with old Iphone formerly used with Windows

I had my Iphone synced with a PC that literally burned up unexpectedly. I replaced it with a Mac and want to sync my phone, however, when I click to manage content manually, a message pops up telling me that my phone will be erased (!!). Because I have lots of music and apps on the phone, I don't want to go back to square one. What do I need to do to make the new computer work with my phone?
When I rip music from a CD, I can't drag the album to the phone; I have to copy them manually.
Also, I used to be able to rearrange icons on my phone via Itunes and that doesn't work either with the Mac. I have "authorized" the phone, but it didn't make any difference in anything.

I think you have to reformat the phone for a mac.

  • New laptop with old iPhone

I just got a new laptop, and I was curious what will happen to my phone when i decide to sync it with my new laptop?

    moopher,
It will see it as the first time you have synced with that computer and ask you if you want to merge the data on the computer with that on the iPhone, or if you want to have either the computer or the iPhone replace the other's information.
You can also tell it to sync that way by reseting Sync History.
    Hope this helps,
    Nathan C.

  • HT1386 How do I sync library on new computer with old iPhone

When I bought my iPhone, I was required by my company to sync with my work computer.  Of course, by iTunes library is on my home computer.
I am no longer with the company so I do not have access to that computer.  Now I want to sync my iPhone with my home computer so I can have my songs on the iPhone.  I have not figured out how to do that.  Is it simply a matter of resetting the iPhone?  Any other way?  Help is appreciated!  Thanks.

  • 100 New Features in iPhone OS 3.0? WHAT ARE THEY!?

I've noticed apple saying there are 100 new features in the iPhone OS 3.0. What exactly are they? I've watched the presentation video that was like over an hour long and there really are only maybe 20 new features mentioned. That is, as long as they're not counting 'cut, copy, and paste' as 5 different features since it works for mail, safari, notes, etc.
is there a list of the 100 new features? cause i want to know them

I'm so simple that all I want is universal ringtones across all apps that have "alert" sounds (text messages, email, calendar- already available on phone calls & clock). Hate the provided sounds Apple gives us, would like to be able to assign specific music or self-made sounds so that I can hear them in a loud area, that are continual until answered, and that can be set as app-specific, just like ringtones can be caller-specific. Most phones have this feature, and I would use it daily, unlike many of the new features being touted. Anyone seen any mention of this (I watched the presentation, not mentioned). Oh, and please don't be a troll and tell me to contact Apple with a request- I do it on a weekly basis. Just looking for info, not basic noob advice.
BTW, I am soooo happy that MMS will finally be provided, as it will put an end to the "old" technology vs. use an email to send pictures argument so prevalent here. That particular back-and-forth has become quite aggravating. (Don't really care that much about MMS, rarely use it, but if it puts those arguments down, good for Apple.)

  • How do I fix a New Mac/Old iPhone WiFi conflict?

New Mac and Old iPhone wifi conflicts.
So just got the new mac. started it up, did all the auto-set up stuff, got my iPhone 4S connected and all my stuff iClouded onto the new mac, but all of a sudden, my partner's work iPhone is blocked from accessing the household wifi. The apps are there, one can click on them but then they are unopenable. His phone is an iPhone 4.
I really don't want to delete my iCloud and to turn it off, I have to delete it off my new mac.

The curtain has been pulled back on iPhone 4, and the list of new features is massive: There's multitasking (finally!), a refreshed interface, and literally hundreds of other changes, all coming this summer. Here's the rundown.
The new OS will ship in June (Fall for iPad, and a developer preview is available today, so we can expect to have plenty of apps updated and ready for launch.
New Features: Multitasking, App Folders and More
iPhone OS 4.0: The Best New Features
    • Multitasking: It's here, finally. It's handled with a simple task switcher: double click your home button, and you get a list of running apps. Select, switch, done. Multitasking is limited to audio streaming, VoIP and GPS apps, as well as a few other allowances: they can finish specific, important tasks in the background, for example. As far as non-music/nav/VoIP apps, those can be suspended in the background, but not left running. (See below.) Full details here.
    • Fast app switching: With iPhone 4's multitasking, most apps aren't actually running in the background—just certain functions of the app, like an audio stream or a GPS lock. But! All apps can now be frozen, in full, so that when you reopen them, they're restored to exactly the state they were in when they were closed.
    • Local notifications: Notifications can be sent between apps on the phone, not just from remote servers. In other words, if something important happens in an app you've opened and moved away from, a notification will pop up in whatever app you're using at the time, effectively saying "switch back to me!" It's a fairly clever way to keep track of multiple apps without the need for a start bar or dock-type interface. From Apple's dev guidelines:
The advantage of local notifications is that they are independent of your application. Once a notification is scheduled, the system manages the delivery of it. Your application does not even have to be running when the notification is delivered.
    Apple's official line:
iPhone OS 4's new multitasking offers users a new way to quickly move between apps, and provides developers seven new multitasking services to easily add multitasking features to their apps. These services include background audio, so apps like Pandora can play music in the background, and VoIP, so VoIP apps can receive a VoIP call even when the iPhone is asleep or the user is running other apps. iPhone OS 4 provides multitasking to third party apps while preserving battery life and foreground app performance, which has until now proved elusive on mobile devices.
And some more technical details, again from Apple's developer guidelines:
An application can request a finite amount of time to complete some important task. An application can declare itself as supporting specific services that require regular background execution time. An application can use local notifications to generate user alerts at designated times, whether or not the application is running.
iPhone OS 4.0: The Best New Features
    • App folders: Now you can sort your apps into folders! That's homescreen clutter solved, just like that. Apple's description:
Folders help users better organize and quickly access their apps. Simply drag one app icon onto another, and a new folder is automatically created. The folder is automatically given a name based on the App Store category of that app, such as "Games," which the user can easily rename. Using folders, users can now organize and access over 2,000 apps on their iPhone.
    2160, to be exact.
iPhone OS 4.0: The Best New Features
    • A new Mail app: Unified inboxes, multiple Exchange accounts, fast inbox switching, threaded messages: These new features are actually a huge deal, since the iPhone's mail client has barely changed since 2007, and Apple doesn't allow alternative mail apps. Apple's pitch:
iPhone OS 4 delivers the best mail experience on a mobile phone with its new Unified Inbox, allowing users to see messages from all their email accounts displayed together in a single inbox. With just a few taps, users can quickly switch between inboxes to see messages from any single account.
iPhone OS 4.0: The Best New Features• iBooks: Oh hey, that iBooks ebook reader app and accompanying ebook store we first met on the iPad has ambled on down to the iPhone. Nice, since you can now take your books with you wherever you go, as oppose to wherever you go with your iPad.
    • Custom backgrounds: Jailbreakers have them. ****, the iPad has them. Now you can choose a persistent background for your iPhone—and not just for the lockscreen.
    • Game Center: Apple's going to roll out a centralized gaming service—a multiplayer network like PSN or Xbox Live—to help connect games to one another, by the end on the year. There are 3rd-party services that already do this, like OpenFeint. They will probably die. Full details here.
iPhone OS 4.0: The Best New Features
    • iAd advertising: It looks like Apple's finally making use of Quattro, that mobile ad company it gobbled up a few months ago, by rolling out its own advertising platform, a turnkey ad plugin for app developers called iAd. The theory here is that instead of relying on links to external websites, which pull users out of apps whenever they tap on an ad, developers can use Apple's new tools to keep people in the app while still showing them advertising—sort of like popover browser windows. You can watch videos, play games, and even buy apps from within these ads. This is in the iPhone OS 4 developer tools, but it's not explicitly a part of OS 4, so you won't see apps with iAds until later this year. Full details here.
    • 5x digital zoom: Could this hint at a higher quality camera in the next hardware? 3.2 megapixels seems a bit low for 5x digital zoom.
    • Bluetooth keyboards: Another carryover from the iPad, Bluetooth keyboard support will finally come to iPhone 4.
    • A bevy of other new developer features, including 1500 new APIs to play with: See here for more details.
    The Hidden Features
Now that we've had a few days to use the OS, we've compiled a huge list of features not covered in the keynote.
Which Devices Get It, and When?
iPhone OS 4.0: The Best New Features
When the software ships in the summer, iPhone 3GSes and iPod Touch 3rd-gens devices will get all of the new features. The iPhone 3G and Touch 2G will get "many things," which doesn't include multitasking. I repeat: the iPhone 3G won't get multitasking, ever. iPhone 2Gs will be left on a hillside somewhere to die of exposure, or something.
Apple didn't drop any clues about the next iPhone's hardware, but it's a fair bet that we'll see some changes come June.
    What About the iPad?
iPhone OS 4.0: The Best New Features
The iPad won't get the 4.0 upgrade until Fall of this year, a few months after the iPhone does. So, you'll be able to multitask on your dinky little iPhone before you'll be even be able to listen to Pandora and check your email at the same time on your giant iPad.

No it's not stealing. They have an allowance that you can share with so many computers/devices. You'll have to authorize her computer to play/use anything bought on your acct. You can do this under the Store menu at top when iTunes is open on her computer.
As far as getting it all on her computer....I think but I am not sure (because I don't use the feature) but I think if you turn on Home Sharing in iTunes it may copy the music to her computer. I don't know maybe it just streams it. If nothing else you can sign into your acct on her computer and download it all to her computer from the cloud. Not sure exactly how to go about that, I haven't had to do that yet. I wonder if once you authorize her computer and then set it up for automatic downloads (under Edit>Preferences>Store) if everything would download. Sorry I'm not much help on that.
