New From Template Changes Relative Links to Local Root?

Thank you for taking the time to read and understand my plight with Dreamweaver CS3 for Mac. I apologize for the lengthy question, but in the effort to provide detail I shall go. First the background:
I'm updating, editing, and appending an existing site that was previously created with Dreamweaver.
I'm new to Dreamweaver but have a pretty good understanding of things
I created a new site on the local drive on my MacBook Pro and then downloaded the entire site via FTP (live site: domain.com)
I then replicated the site and exact file structure using FTP to a staging server (staging.domain.com)
There are three existing .dwt templates. I've successfully updated the template file and auto updated all other pages that were based on this template.
But my problem comes from creating new pages FROM the template. It appears that while the .dwt template file shows relative links (../xxxx) in the code, when create a new file from the template the url of these links is replaced by the path to the file on my local drive... I want non of this (.../xxxx) is fine.
What is happening is that a javascript drop down menu is disappearing when I create new from template. I am assuming it's because of the path changes.
This is the ORIGINAL (good) code from the .dwt:
<!-- Top Navigation -->
<tr>
     <td height="31">
          <table width="718" border="0" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0">
               <tr>
                    <td width="24"><img src="../images/L-Header-Corner.gif" width="30" height="50" border="0"></td>
                    <td width="342" style="background-image: url(../images/Header-BG.gif);"><img src="../images/spacer.gif" alt="" width="337" height="1" border="0"> </td>
But when I create a NEW page from the above template the code is changed to the local path:
<!-- Top Navigation -->
<tr>
     <td height="31">
          <table width="718" border="0" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0">
               <tr>
                    <td width="24"><img src="file:///Grasshopper/Users/allan/Documents/clients/site/site staging master/images/L-Header-Corner.gif" width="30" height="50" border="0"></td>
                    <td width="342" style="background-image: url(file:///Grasshopper/Users/allan/Documents/clients/site/site staging master/images/Header-BG.gif);"><img src="file:///Grasshopper/Users/allan/Documents/clients/site/site staging master/images/spacer.gif" alt="" width="337" height="1" border="0"> </td>
To be sure all links in the template file are changed too.
This is the .dwt file itself
This is a random page created from the above template.
And this page was created by simply altering the .dwt template file linked above and then SAVING AS. You can see the relative links remained and the navigation bar looks and operates as normal.
To provide easier visual reference I offer the following:
This is the .dwt file when opened in dreamweaver:
Note the black area where the javascript drop down menu is in the top navigation when the page is correct:
But when I create a NEW page from template this is what I get in the top navigation bar:
And then this is what it looks like when posted:
Ultimately what I'm trying to do is:
1) work on site files on my local drive
2) sync the local drive with staging.domain.com so my client can proof and approve
3) sync to the actual live site at domain.com
I assume I could simply do this by changing the ftp info and given the site structure and all files are same and ideally all links are relative this should be accomplished easily.
Though perhaps my problem stems from the fact my local site is buried several layers deep on my local drive Local Drive/Users/Me/Clients/Client.... etc... but I haven't checked this yet.

Great... Thanks for your patience....
Here are links to all questioned files on the staging server:
This is the .dwt file itself
This is a random page created from the above template that shows the image/navigation incorrect.
And this page was created by simply altering the .dwt template file linked above and then SAVING AS. You can see the relative links remained and the navigation bar looks and operates as normal. (obviously the wrong thing to do.
And this page is one that was created prior to my working on the site and was based on the subpage template and displays correctly.
Now bear with me here as I notice this behavour too.
In the code snipped taken directly from the DW .dwt template (linked above)
<td width="24"><img src="../images/L-Header-Corner.gif" width="30" height="50" border="0"></td>
                    <td width="342" style="background-image: url(../images/Header-BG.gif);"><img src="../images/spacer.gif" alt="" width="337" height="1" border="0"> </td>
you'll notice there are two images L-Header-Corner.gif and one that is Header.BG.gif.
The difference here is that the BG gif has a style attributed to it "Background-Image) which is followed by some strange code that says (url)../
Opening that file Background Image and it's a tiny slice of what I think is part of the entire missing gray bar:
In a page that displays correctly the code looks like this:
<td width="24"><img src="../images/L-Header-Corner.gif" width="30" height="50" border="0"></td>
                    <td width="342" style="background-image: url(../images/Header-BG.gif);"><img src="../images/spacer.gif" alt="" width="337" height="1" border="0"> </td>
And in a page that is displaying incorrectly the code appears like this:
<td width="24"><img src="../images/L-Header-Corner.gif" width="30" height="50" border="0"></td>
                    <td width="342" style="background-image: url(file:///Grasshopper/Users/allan/Documents/clients/koolfog/koolfog website staging/images/Header-BG.gif);"><img src="../images/spacer.gif" alt="" width="337" height="1" border="0"> </td>
So you can see that the link in this case (with the URL and style) has actually been converted to a site (my hard drive) relative link when saving.
So the pressing question stands: Why doesn't dreamweaver convert that URL link when saving a page created from a template back to the same directory?
Also, it appears that in that .DWT all the links have the leading periods and therefore are document relative... since I didn't set this up, how do you think this happened?

  • InDesign CS5- where is create new from template?

    Hi,
    I was looking for creating something new from one of the default templates of CS5, like I've done in the past with CS3 and CS4.  However I find that there doesn't seem to be an option to create new from template.
    Am I completely missing where it is?  Have they called it something else?  Have they removed the default ones completely from InDesign?

    I should perhaps amend that to don't waste time with a template for multiple labels on a sheet. If you see something that works for you as far as basic layout, make a one-up lable from it (cupy the elements from a single label into a new file sized for only one label). Get a sheet full of blank labels, place that file in the upper left position on your larger sheet layout, then use Edit >Step and Repeat... to make the grid. This is much more efficient as it allows you to edit the entire sheet at one time by editing the single label file.
    If you need to d a data merge, you can do nearly the same thing -- put a single blank label layout in the upper left position, add your merge field placeholders in that one label, and run the merge. DO NOT put anything beyond the single label layout on the sheet for a Data Merge job. Also, note that there is a bug in CS5/5.5 that will give you an incorrect multiple records merge if you try to preview. If you preview you must use Undo before the merge to go back to the pre-preview state.

  • Why don't I have the 'new from templates' option in Indesgin CS6?

    Why don't I have the 'new from templates' option in Indesgin CS6? I only have three options under 'new', document, book or library. No template option as attached ...
    Please help.
    Many thanks,
    Jeannette

    This is still pretty annoying. Some of us actually make, and use our own templates. For example, I do tons of product mockups in my day to day and I have a series of basic templates laid out that I use for including the mock up image and the various specifications for each product. It's been super easy, in CS4, to choose file / new from template and just pop my template open. It was even nifty enough that Bridge would redirect to my templates folder for me.
    Sure, I know I can still save my templates to another folder and use them as I always have, but the question is why would they just remove this? For all of the bloat that Adobe constantly adds on to this suite of applications, year after year, why on earth would they just remove a simple, useful, entirely unobtrusive feature such as file / new from template?

  • Templates / script / relative link

    I'm trying to use relative links within a javascript menu in
    a template. Is this even possible? You will see at the bottom under
    MENU ITEMS all my links are coded as absolute paths. I would like
    to use relative paths. It this possible?

    dreamweaver does not "manage" paths buried in custom
    javascript.
    They will be exactly the same in the child pages as they are
    in the template
    file.
    So- no, you shouldn't use document relative paths in that
    menu.
    Only use absolute or site root relative paths, because dw
    will not alter the
    paths when the child pages are created and saved at different
    folder levels
    in the site.

  • Excel 2010 changes relative link paths to absolute in files synced with Offline Files in Windows 7

    Hello! I'm wondering if anyone else has seen this problem: I have a large number of Excel 2010 and 2003 files in a folder on my file server. This whole folder is also synced to my computer using Offline Files in Windows 7. I have a lot of references between
    cells in different Excel files, and all referenced workbooks are physically in the same folder. This all works nicely when I create these files at work - all file paths referenced in the cells are created as relative paths and the documents open correctly.
    This is, I understand, the expected and default behavior when Excel creates links. When I edit these files at home, nothing seems odd until I get back to work and sync these files back to the file server. At this point, I discovered that Excel 2010 has, when
    I saved the files while away from the corporate network, changed /all/ the cell references in any offline-edited Excel files to point at absolute paths, and that these absolute paths point to somewhere in my %APPDATA% structure. So whenever I come to work
    and I try to open an Excel file that I have recently worked with offline, I get a bunch of error messages about referenced files that are missing, although clearly they exist in the same folder as the file I've opened, and I must edit all the file references
    again, whereupon they are again created correctly as relative paths (since all files exist in the same folder), which are promptly mangled into absolute C:\....\Offline Files\.....\..... paths whenever I save them at home (and since that works too, I don't
    notice it again until I come back to work and the offline files are synced back to the real network location). This seems to be a case of Windows 7's Offline Files not being able to fool Excel 2010 into believing it is working on a file server - apparently
    Excel 2010 can see through the fakery and decides on it's own to "fix" the problem (which obviously isn't a problem since the paths are relative to begin with) by saving the paths as absolute paths instead. Yes, really clever, Excel. The exepected behavior
    according to MSKB is that links are created as relative paths, so why does it change to absolute whenever Offline Files are involved? I know Offline Files only syncs, it doesn't actually change the files, so I can conclude that Excel is the program at fault
    here. Is there a fix for this, or a known workaround? Because frankly, this bug makes it impossible for me to work in any advanced manner with linked Excel files. The sad thing is that this worked perfectly fine with Office 2003 and Windows XP. Is there a
    patch for this problem that I might have missed (I am running the latest Service Pack and I get Office updates from Microsoft Update). If not, is there a workaround I can use to prevent Excel from corrupting my links when I edit the files offline?

    Thanks for replying, but as I said earlier, I do not want to

  • CSS for background image not transfering from template to new page

    I have a gradient .gif in my templates which suddenly no longer transfers from the template to  a new page created from the template.  Everything else about the template transfers.  I'm using Dreamweaver CS5 on a Mac running OS 10.6.  I've pasted the CSS from the template and the new page below.  I've tried the usual voodoo--restart program, restart computer, repair permissions, delete preference file, delete personal configuration file.
    CSS from Template:
    .container {
        background-color: #ececec;
        background-image: url(../images/faux_column.png);
        background-repeat: repeat-y;
        height: 650px;
        width: 650px;
    CSS from page created from Template looks to be the same, but is greyed out in the code, and the background-image entry is not present in the CSS styles inspector:
    .container {
        background-color: #ececec;
        background-image: url(../images/faux_column.png);
        background-repeat: repeat-y;
        height: 650px;
        width: 650px;
    Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

    Unfortunately, I don't yet have a site where I can post the page.  I'm new to this, and doing everything locally for now.
    After careful rechecking, I found that the links for the template and the child were not the same, as you suspected.  So I carefully changed the links to site root relative, which worked for the background CSS in my test image.  I then did the same for all of the links to pages on my site, and checked that all were OK with Link Checker in DW.  I guess that was a mistake, because now most of them don't work when tested in Firefox--I get the message File not found.  Must be doing something wrong.

  • Template Changes Do Not Apply Globally

    I am having issues with Templates.
    I have setup editable regions and saved my pages as
    templates, etc but nothing seems to work.
    How do I make changes to editable regions and have those
    changes apply globally throughout my pages which all have the same
    editable regions?
    Also, when I open a new page from the templates I saved, it
    only allows changes to the editable regions??? What gives? Isn't
    the whole point of opneing up &quot;new from template&quot;
    to create a new pages which shares the same editable
    regions?

    This is the wrong way to use templates.
    To use templates, you must spawn a child from the template
    using FILE | New
    from Template...
    This will create a page that no longer contains "Template"
    markup, but
    instead contains "Instance" markup so that DW can tell what
    to do with
    editable/non-editable regions.
    > The alternative to the Save As method, is that I choose
    create
    > new from template, but then I typically have to change
    more stuff.
    That's wrong. It's not an alternative - it's the right way to
    do it. And
    what "more stuff" do you have to change?
    > I have tried making
    > changes to that page and uploading - I mean putting, but
    it changes
    > nothing
    Of course, because you still have not understood how
    templates work. They
    have NO function on the server. They only work INSIDE of DW
    to change your
    local files. It's the changed local files that must be PUT to
    the server,
    NOT the template.
    For what it's worth, I cannot stand what the nasty webforum
    does to your
    post....

  • Question on templates and updating linked files

    OK I have a master template file. Let's say it is named
    a.dwt. I used a.dwt to create another template (b.dwt) that had
    more content on it than a.dwt. I would use b.dwt to create a group
    of similar looking pages which still had all the elements of a.dwt
    but also the additional content of b.dwt.
    Now if I make a change to the a.dwt template, all pages
    created from a.dwt change except b.dwt. So either I forgot to
    create the b.dwt by going to file->new->page from
    template->and then save it as a .dwt OR maybe it's not possible
    to have a secondary template that gets updated when the first
    template gets updated thus causing all pages from the secondary
    template to get updated?
    Is there any way to go back and make b.dwt update
    automatically whenever a.dwt gets updated? The scenario I have
    right now is that I have to make certain site changes on both a.dwt
    and b.dwt instead of just making the change on a.dwt and that
    change flowing into b.dwt and its spawned pages.

    >I think what possibly happened is that I opened a.dwt and
    then made the
    > addition of the form element to a.dwt but then simply
    saved as b.dwt
    > instead of
    > FILE | New From Template
    Yes, I think that's a possible scenario.
    > There will be about 15 pages that will look the same
    (have the
    > same form) except that at the top it will say "Send mail
    to Person X"
    > where
    > Person X will change.
    I see. Are you using "mailto:" on each of those forms? This
    method of
    sending form data is notioriously unreliable, you know? It
    depends on a)
    your visitor's browser knowing what to do with such a link,
    and b) your
    visitor's email client knowing what to do with such a link,
    and c) your
    visitor not being put off by the security alert message that
    may pop up when
    they click. Nevermind the fact that it fails completely in
    public locations
    that do not have an email client installed.
    Why not do this the right way with server scripting? In that
    case you could
    have a single page with a single form, and let the visitor
    select a name as
    the recipient from a list/menu field.

  • Problem with writing code from template based file

    Hey there! Thanks for taking a look at this:
    I have a page that I created New> From template.
    I'm in Split view and I'm manually going in and placing my cursor where I want to add some content. Ive tried writing a <br> tage and inserting a Div.
    I'm inserting this code right before the closing <div> tag that my editable region ends, its clearly in the right spot, within my editable region in the template, but I'm getting an error from dreamweaver that says it's not. This seems to only be happening when I edit the code directly. If I insert code through the menu's in design view I don't get this message.
    I'm using CS5 on a Mac
    What do I Do?

    > making this change would require changing code that is locked by a template
    > or a translator. The change will be discarded
    This 'generic' error message happens as follows -
    1.  You open a page that is controlled by a Template
    2.  You make a change to that page, forcing the template engine to run through the page looking for things to potentially change (this is normal)
    3.  While doing this scan, the Template engine finds an unspecified number of coding errors and attempts to fix them
    4.  If it tries to fix an error that is a) in a non-editable region of the page, or b) in a Library item, it cannot do so, and throws the error
    So - the first questions are these:
    1.  Does the template validate when you go here - http://validator.w3.org - and paste the code from the page into the Direct Input tab?
    2.  Do the Library items contain <html>, <head>, or <body> tags?
    If the answer to either of those is "yes" then we will have to see the page and the code to guide you further.

  • DW 8 mangling doc from template

    All of a sudden, DW 8 (Mac OS X 10.3.9) is screwing up
    documents created
    from my templates in all three of my sites. This is what
    *should* show in
    the header of the docs:
    <link rel="stylesheet" type="text/css"
    href="CSS/main.css">
    <script type="text/javascript"
    src="js/p7_eqCols2_10.js"></script>
    But this is what I'm now seeing instead:
    <link rel="stylesheet" type="text/css"
    href="file:///BRASH/Users/bethrosengard/Documents/%20BR%20DOCUMENTS/Steph/CS
    S/main.css">
    <script type="text/javascript"
    src="file:///BRASH/Users/bethrosengard/Documents/%20BR%20DOCUMENTS/Steph/js/
    p7_eqCols2_10.js"></script>
    I can work around it by reattaching the doc to the template
    but I shouldn't
    have to. I create the docs as I always have:
    File>New>New from template.
    I have tried the following to no avail:
    Tossing the DW prefs.
    Recreating the site caches.
    Re-navigating to the site and image folders in the site
    definitions.
    So what's going on and how do I fix it??
    TIA,
    Beth

    This is one of several templates, all of which now

    hi,
    I a workset I have to placed 4 related links, so in a page I have added the 4 iviews as related links. But when I click on the link ,the releted ivew is opening in a different window.I need to open it in the same content area,not in a seperate pop up window .
    How can i do this?
    Thanks in advance,
    jesmi

    Hi Jesmi,
    For some reason, the Launch in New Window property of related link iViews is changed when the iView is added as a related link. Change this property back to the default -- show in place.
    Hope this helps.
