New iMac, major difference or not?

I see some articles now appearing on the new iMac range announced yesterday. Does anyone have any real performance data yet which compares the current to previous models?
With new NVIDIA GPU and DDR3 versus DDR2 but same frontside bus (1066) and Intel processors I can see potential for improvement in some areas but perhaps not across the board? In addition, it is extremely disappointing to see the same Intel Core 2 Duo processor range and lack of a screen update given the last refresh was April 2008. Surely with the release of the 24"LED cinema display we would see an LED backlight screen on the iMac to replace the TFT which dates back to early last year? Granted memory and disk capacity have doubled but we expect this given the pricing is roughly the same for these new higher capability devices now.
Finally looking at the Apple press release there is an indication that you get the entry level 24" (2.66GHz) for the same as the previous 20" 2.66GHz. It may be different in the US but in Australia but the price of the previous 20" 2.66GHz with 2GB was $1999AUS on the Apple web site and now the 24" with same processor spec (2.66GHZ) is $2499AUS. The Apple Australia store RRP is somewhat higher even allowing for the current exchange rate. Normally Apple US regulate the RRP worldwide, however looking at one example: the 24" 3.06GHz is $3699AUS versus US $2199 So there appears to be a skew in the Australia RRP over and above the US Ex rate of some $200+ dollars. Perhaps there are other factors which explain this?

To confirm, in the USA this is true. 20" 2.66MHz model was $1500 US. Now for the same $1500 US you get a 24" screen , same processor, and then the across the board upgrades you get on all models (double the RAM, double the hard drive, etc.).

I do not have any experience with Final Cut, but if you have existing projects that you MUST access; then you are in need of a solution on your new iMac in Mountain Lion!
Unfortunately you got caught up in the minor miracle of Rosetta.  Originally licensed by Apple when it migrated from the PowerPC CPU platform that it had used from the mid-1990's until the Intel CPU platform in 2006, Rosetta allowed Mac users to continue to use their library of PPC software transparently in emulation.
However, Apple's license to continue to use this technology expired with new releases of OS X commencing with Lion (and now Mountain Lion).  While educational efforts have been made over the last 6 years, the fact is that Rosetta was SO successful that many users were caught unaware UNTIL they upgraded to Lion or Mountain Lion.
    Workarounds:
    1.  Purchase a used Mac that will run Snow Leopard (with the optional Rosetta installed) and continue to run FCE on that Mac (you can actually use Screen Sharing with a "headless" used Snow Leopard Mac Mini and use the 27" screen from your iMac to view and work FCE in the Mac Mini environment);
    2.  Upgrade to an Intel compatible version of FCE and hope it converts your existing projects to its newer format correctly.  There is much debate that the newer version of Final Cut are eliminating many needed features; for example Final Cut Pro X vs. Final Cut Pro 6 -- many users are staying with version 6;
    3.  Install Snow Leopard (with Rosetta) into Parallels and then install FCE in the Snow Leopard environment:

Full Snow Leopard installation instructions here:
    http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=1365439
NOTE: STEP ONE of the instructions must currently be completed on a Snow Leopard or Lion Mac and the resulting modified Snow Leopard.cdr install file can then be moved over to your Mountain Lion Mac for completion of the remaining steps.
NOTE 2:  Computer games with complex, 3D or fast motion graphics make not work well or at all in virtualization.

I have different icloud and iTunes id's and I want to do homesharing for all my devices. I'm trying to set up a new iMac but homesharing is not working. Should it be the itunes or iCloud id?

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
Preferably your iTunes account, but it shouldn't really matter for getting homesharing turned on, as long as it's a valid ID.

attempted to transfer itunes music from pc to new imac. didn't work. apple suggest using sharing method. main library of music is on pc. did those steps and shared library shows up on mac but when you click on the song to play it doesn't play or maybe ther is no content? any suggestions?

    Hi there,
It sounds like your purchased content is not transfering via a flash drive. It may be easier to re-download this contnet directly from iTunes. Take a look at the article below for mor information.

  • How to import iDVD app from Time Capsule to my new iMac 21" that does not have iDVD?  I can find the iDVD app in the Time Capsule, then what?

I have a new 21" iMac to replace a 6-year old iMac 24.  My Time Capsule has the iDVD app saved (?) and I can find it, but I can't figure out how to move it to my new iMac that does not have the app.  How to do this?

You are probably better to install it from ilife disk.

  • Brand new iMacs with Lion will not read DVD-R

Our business has just purchased 3 x brand new iMacs (3.4Ghz) pre-loaded with OSX Lion 10.7.2 and NONE of them will read a DVD-R containing important files I need to access. However, the trusty 2 year old iMac running Snow leopard sees the files instantly....what's wrong with Lion...?
My 2 year old MacBook pro was updated with Lion a few months ago and hey, it stopped reading DVD-R's....how interesting....! It can't be ALL of the superdrives failing, so it's obviously a fault with the OS...seems to be a VERY common problem, so what's the problem in getting it fixed?

Contact Apple Service, iMac Service or Apple's Express Lane. Do note that if you have AppleCare's protection plan and you're within 50 miles (80 KM) of an Apple repair station, you're eligible for onsite repair since yours is a desktop machine.

  • Brand New iMac and wired keyboard not working

I just bought a new iMac.The wired keyboard seems to work, the mouse is plugged into the keyboard and that works, and I can, somewhat make changes to the volume and other small changes. The ESC key works (I can turn off VoiceOver)but... I can not even get the computer up and going. I can not put in my name or other registration information.
Any ideas if the keyboard has some kind of other settings that I need to turn off. There is no software or anything else in the Mac that I know of. It is brand new and just arrived today.
    Anyone have any suggestions?

I'm so sorry. I know this a bummer. But better to take it back. When you take it in, if they boot it and get it to work, make sure and shut down the iMac, wait about ten seconds and press the power button. Make sure it boots to the Desktop and that your keyboard functions as it should. Just make absolutely sure it works before you bring it back home. In fact, since you could not get through the registration process, perhaps they will go through that with you since had problems with it. Something isn't communicating between the iMac and the keyboard. Could be the USB ports, software/hardware ... hopefully they'll repair it to your satisfaction or replace it.

  • HT1539 I have the new imac and it does not have a dvd drive. How can I download digital copy of a movie?

Some Blu rays and DVDs come with digital copies and you inset them into the dvd drive and it downloads the movie to itunes and then you can put them on any iDevice. The new iMac does not have a dvd or disc drive. What can I do?

You will either need to borrow or purchase an external DVD drive, or if you have access to another computer that has a DVD drive you may be able to use Remote Disk:

  • Installed Maverick on new IMac and printer will not print

I purchased a new IMac in December after always having PCs so there has been a learning curve for me.  A few days ago I installed the Maverick update.  So far, so good except my printer no longer will print.  I have a new Canon MC7120 printer/scanner.  I am still able to scan, but not print.  When trying to print, I have received a popup telling me to install software.
Would you be able to walk me through what I am suppose to do?  I am assuming I am to install software again that I installed when I purchased the printer.  Being new to Macs, I don't want to do something I shouldn't.  Your help would be appreciated.  Thank you

The printer is not listed as supported on this page:
OS X: Printer and scanner software available for download
You may be able to get it to work with the software from here:

  • Brand new iMac 24 inch does not start

I went to best buy and bought the 24 inch 2.66 GHz iMac. We loved it when the apple guy gave us a demo. I brought the brand new iMac home and set it up. Pushed the power button - IMac does not power on. Tried diff options like changing plug socket, extension cord, removed and replaced power supply from back of iMac, but didnt work.
After an hour, I took the thing back to Best buy and they replaced it with a new one. Now this new one started right away and we really love this computer. Browed until late night, put it on sleep before going to sleep. Woke up in the morning, checked email and did some more browsing before I put it back to sleep and went to take a shower. After I come back and try to turn it ON, it wont turn ON. No matter what I did except this time I did not remove the power supply from the back of the Mac.
I called in for apple support as I was extremely concerned. The support guy asked me to hold the power button for 5 secs and try to power it back again. Nothing, didnt work. Next he asked me to remove all connections as well as the power supply from the back of the Mac and then turn it on. Lo and behold, came back up.
I asked the support guy as to what the heck is the problem and if this type problem has been reported earlier - he said he cannot comment on that. I really like this computer, but I am concerned as to its reliability. Anyone had similar problems? What was the problem and what did you do?

What the guy did was have you reset the SMC, the System Management Controller. It controls things like startups, shutdowns and sleeping.
Is the iMac plugged directly into a three prong wall outlet or are you using an extension cord or a cheat adapter? If you are using an extension cord, then it needs to be a proper three pronged utility cord and not a simple cord with a cheat adapter.

  • New iMac with Lion, do not have iDVD - so cannot burn from iMovie!

I have a new iMac which I bought about 6 weeks ago, I have just done my wedding DVD ready to burn, and find out that I do not have iDVD on this iMac.
I can't download it anywhere, my iMac and the App Store says I have all of iLife '11 instealled but no iDVD.
To be honest I bought the iMac above a PC for the Photo and Movie capabilities, so if I cannot burn to DVD I may aswell bin it and go back to a PC whetre at keast I can share my movies with family, etc.
Any help would be much appreciated.
    Thanks

    Update March 9, 2012:
After reviewing the comments regarding this matter on several posts I contacted Apple support. I had to make two calls. The first call left me very frustrated, completely due to the fact the support member was as helpful as sand paper in a sh*t storm. The rep told me "iDVD is no longer available nothing we can do" then proceeded to say "hope we helped you out today".....
I decided to call again when I discovered none of the third party burning software I came across was equal to iDVD, yet would set me back $$$ for something I should already have on my system. This time the rep listened while I camly explained my dissatifaction with Apples choice to not offer this software. In addition, they haven't issued a proper explanation for doing so or rerouted customers to options equal to or greater than their own software upon making the original computer purchase.
Outcome? a copy of iDVD has been mailed out, which I should expect to be here in a week. I appreciate the reps response in making it happen, but it doesn't change my position Apple dropped the ball on this matter. Furthermore, if iDVD is cancelled then how was it so easy to mail one out? Why not offer it as a free download in the App store? etc etc etc....

  • Mail not using my Address Book on new iMac 10.6.2 - not autofilling ...

I have recently switched to a new iMac with a fresh install of 10.6.2.
My Apple Mail app is not grabbing address book contacts automatically even though I have checked the box to auto-complete addresses. This always used to work on my old machine.
Any ideas why this might be happening ? Should I delete the preference file to rebuild it ? Is there a setting I'm not aware of somewhere else ?
    Thanks,
    Ed

These instructions are for 10.8. In 10.7, the application is called "Address Book."
    Back up all data.
    In Contacts, select
File ▹ Export ▹ Contacts Archive
from the menu bar, and save the archive to your Desktop.
If you use iCloud, disable contact synchronization in the iCloud preference pane. When prompted, click Delete From Mac. Re-enable synchronization. Wait for the contacts to re-synchronize, then test.
If you don't use iCloud, or if the contacts fail to synchronize, delete all contacts, then select
    File ▹ Import…
and import the archive you created. It may take a few seconds for the contacts to be indexed. Test.
If you don't like the results of this procedure, quit the application. In the Finder, select
    Go ▹ Go to Folder
from the menu bar, copy the text on the line below into the box that opens, and press return:
    ~/Library/Application Support/AddressBook
Restore the folder that opens from the backup you made before you started.

  • New imac open i am not able to on, just bought two day before what would be problem

i have just bought new imac model no Mc306 i am not able to make it on, what do i am confuse

I don't have a WSJ account to test... Here is some general advice:
When you have a problem with one particular site, a good "first thing to try" is clearing your Firefox cache and deleting your saved cookies for the site.
    (1) Bypass Firefox's Cache
Use Ctrl+Shift+r to reload the page fresh from the server.
Alternately, you also can clear Firefox's cache completely using:
orange Firefox button (or Tools menu) > Options > Advanced
On the Network mini-tab > Cached Web Content : "Clear Now"
If you have a large hard drive, this might take a few minutes.
    (2) Remove the site's cookies (save any pending work first). While viewing a page on the site:
    * right-click and choose View Page Info > Security > "View Cookies"
    * Alt+t (open the classic Tools menu) > Page Info > Security > "View Cookies"
This will open a window listing the site's cookies, which you can remove individually.
Then try reloading the page and logging back in. Does that help?
