New Install Questions

Hey folks... I'm looking for some idea's on my new install (system spec's are in my sig).
I have done some basic playing with the system and it's pretty nice so far. I do have a couple of complaints ( hot hot hot) but mostly I'm dig'n the system.
1) Add Fans... this system is hot, and I'd like to add a/some fans to it for improved airflow. Has anyone done this? I'd like some idea's on how to add more fans. (at least 1 80mm fan would be a great improvement I think). Or any other good idea's on lowering the system/cpu temp (and I did remove the stuff on the heatsink and put on some good AS5... but I didn't lap the heatsink)
2) Sound/Video capture. Here's what I have right now: Dish-network DVR, Mega 180 (with Logitec 5.1 speakers) and a TV. I would like to be able to watch Satellite TV and have the sound (surround sound) come through the 180. Not 100% sure how to do it right now.
And if I add a Capture card, is it just better to go out and get a upgraded video card & capture card (will most likely NOT be playing games on this system, and if we do they won't be high end frame monsters)? Either way, got suggestions?

YES
THANKS
One word of caution.  People have claimed that reversing the fans has only worked in systems that did not have a separate video card in the AGP or PCI slots as they restrict air flow thus making the heat related problem worse than it was to begin with.

  • PSE 7 tags and new install questions

I have PSE7 on an older computer and I've purchased a new computer and would like the tags from the 30000+ images to move over to the new system.
    I see some possible pitfalls.
New OS is Windows 7 and old OS is XP
Paths will be different due to the Users versus Documents and Settings folders
    Sheer size of the files
I have already copied the files to the new system and have installed PSE7.  Now I haven't even opened PSE7 on the new system yet as I want to make sure I can get all the data from the old system in there first.
I don't really want to backup 50GB or so of pictures again but if I have to I can.
Thanks in advance for any help on this.
    Pete

The backup/restore method is generally the most straightforward way of moving your catalog to a new computer, especially when switching versions of Windows or changing the file and folder paths.  Adobe has not yet announced whether they will officially support PSE 7 on Windows 7, but a number of people have reported that various versions of PSE ran fine on pre-release Windows 7.
See this FAQ for details on using the backup/restore method:

  • New install, question about Pacman

Ok so I finally decided to give arch a try. During the install I run the command "arch-chroot /mnt pacman -S grub-bios" and it prompts me the total install size, I choose "yes" to Proceed andnow its just sitting here. I see no verbose or status or loading percentage
How long do I wait here before I decide that its hanging. I understand it may be working in the background but I want to be sure.

It should've been plainly obvious, as this would've generated a lot of output with these two groups packages being installed over to those partitions you'd created.
I also second what jasonwryan had said above; favour the official install guide on the Arch Wiki, it's kept upto date and doesn't merely order you to pump out commands without offering an explaination as to why it's being done.

Glad it seems to be working now.

  • Problems with migration on a new install

I turned on my new 27" iMac, and when it asked if I wanted to import info, I was not ready because I did not have the right cable to connect my Time Machine External B/U, so I passed, and created a Bootcamp partition.
I installed Windows XP just fine, and then installed Parallels on the main admin account, and made sure it worked. then tried to import my prior user account by connecting both computers with an ethernet cable, and turned on file sharing. I had problems with lots of spinning beach ball of death on the old mac, so I figured moving to the new machine would get rid of it.
So I used Migration assistant to import from my current computer connected with Cat 5 cable, and it got 99% of the way through, then hung, like it could not gather the final info from the old computer to finish the migration, so I forced quit Migration on both computers, since there is no other way to exit w/o a successful install.
The account was there, though when I log in as that user, I see lots of folders I don't have permission to access like my documents and downloads.
So I go back to the old computer, and do an updated time machine back-up, then connect that external HD to the new iMac and do a 2nd import to a fresh user. All goes well, and I am able to log in, however, my new install of Parallels does not show up on the desktop, rather my old Parallels shows up with its different name. And I am getting spinning beach balls for 10-20 seconds in Safari, which I don't like, as something from the old computer must be corrupt to be doing this like a preference file or ?.
I have had a Mac since the early 1990's, and always only had one account that I used to run the computer, never creating a "User" account to run day to day, and I am not fully understanding the relationships between admin & user.
    So my questions are;
    1. what is the best way to take my documents, movies, photos, music and such from the 2nd migration, and transfer to a freshly created user account that would have no corrupted preferences causing the spinning problems. Do I put them in the shared folder, then access them from the new account, and transfer them that way, or does the admin do it?
    2. What do I do about the applications that were imported, can the main admin move them and possibly the above documents to the main applications folder?
    3. What about fonts and such, should they be put in the main library, or a user library?
    4. Where can I find info on the allowable actions & limits of admin and users? what they can & can't do.
    5. On my admin desktop, I can see my HD, Bootcamp partition, and Parallels shortcut. It is not visible on my test account, or another user account I created for #1 above. How can I give that user access?
    6. How can I access the new Parallels install that shows up on the admin hd, instead of the old imported one in my user account?
    7. How can I access the 2 external HD's that show up in admin and not users?
    8. Can I safely delete the user that was created from my first unsuccessful migration that I had to force quit and has permission issues?
Thanks for your help, really appreciate getting up to speed on users...

No offense, though none of your replies are of any help. I am not migrating from a PPC to Intel, I don't need to reinstall, I am not a new user migrating for the first time, and I am not having any font problems.
    Let me try again.
If I have a problem with an imported user account like it hangs doing certain things, how do I move all the data to a new user on the same PC, just drag all the documents, library, and similar folders to the shared folder, or the user folder?

  • How do perform a new install of iTunes on C drive, but locate the library on a second internal drive?

I realize this topic has been kind of beat to death, but I'm not finding exactly the information I'm searching for. There is a lot of information about splitting libraries, but I want to do a new install, and have my media located on a separate drive, with nothing but the software on the C drive.
I have a pretty massive music library (noting new or special about that), so an new install of iTunes is always a huge chore. Like many other users in posts I've read with similar questions, my C drive is SSD (also have another dedicated to something else entirely), and so I have purchased a standard spinning drive to handle my iTunes media, and externals for everything that isn't meant for iTunes. Basically, I need the library database to be located on my 'E' drive (let's say), and I will move most of my files manually. I just need iTunes to find them after doing so, and then I'll simply resync my iPhone to the new setup. I have a few reservations about that, but that is a different topic.Right now, I just need to get iTunes installed and have it recognize/find media on a separate drive. Also, I'm running Windows 7, 64-bit, in case that is relavant.
Sorry if there are a million thread with the same info, but all I was finding was how to split the library, and that's not at all what I want to achieve. Thanks in advance!

hello again Chris - I hope you're able to help, or someone as knowledgeable.
I've started another discussion because installing this newest version of iTunes has caused problems like I've never encountered.
    - I did a fresh install as I intended (new PC running Win 7 64-bit). Installation is smooth, and opens fine. Then I create the new library on "I" drive, iTunes then stalls when opening. I just tried this again, and it has been unresponsive for ~10 min, not fully open.
    - I see the new library just fine when I peek in the "I"drive.
    - In a previous attempt, I used an existing library file, iTunes still stalls, though it loaded the content. It just freezes when I enter the store. The content loaded fine. Still, couldn't access new material or materials I've purchased and won't download after installing and trying to access iTunes store.
-each time I try, I unstall every connected program to iTunes, even removing items from registry.
I'm seriously perplexed. I've been using iTunes since 2005 and have never had any kind of issue like this. this PC is a gaming rig. Top of the line components all the way. I even cancled overclock settings to make sure that wasn't the culprit. Still no joy. I had iTunes installed on this machine about 3 months back, but since "C" drive is SSD, I uninstalled until I recently purchased a standard HD specifically for media content. While writing this, it just brough up the tutorial. I click an option (iTunes in the Cloud) just to see if it moves ahead. It does nothing. I have to minimize the browser to access. Apple no longer offers support - they want me to pay to help with free software for which I've already spent loads of money on for content. This is absolutely insane. What has changed in the last few months to make this software behave this way? Previous versions HAVE worked on this machine. I simply couldn't contain the library on my drive. No help was offed on my other post. I'm desparate at this point. Please. Someone from the community or Apple help me. I've got literally several thousands of dollars of media that I cannot access on my PC. ****, the OS is lean and I barely have any software installed. This makes no sense at all. Sorry that I'm all over the place. I've been working for hours on a problem with BitCoin miners on another machine and combine with iTunes (which should be simple compared to the DIY component of mining hardware and software...which I'm actually able to solve!!!), and I'm fried and defeated. need sleep. Thanks in advance.

  • CS2, I loved it but now after a computer death and a new install on a new PC the registration program won't take the code and continually needs to bee registered, how do I fix it without buying a new version.

Some time back I was in college and purchased a copy of CS2, I loved it but now after a computer death and a new install on a new PC the registration program won't take the code and continually needs to bee registered, how do I fix it without buying a new version.

Oh, for Pete's sake, folks!  The forum FAQs state very clearly that posters should always perform a forum search BEFORE POSTING.
This question has been asked and answered here ad nauseam here.  I'll bet there are dozens of such questions here in the last few months.
    How To Get Help Quickly
    Before you Post:
Firstly - have you really checked the 'help' option in the program? Many problems can be solved far faster by getting the answer from the Help File.
Secondly - check the Forum FAQ folder. There's advice there on many common questions and problems
Thirdly - use the 'Knowledgebase Search' option near the top of this page. Or you can click here to go to the relevant page and enter your search words there - or just search for 'Photoshop' there to see summaries of all the relevant items.

  • OID/DAS migrate content to new install with a different realm - help

    Hi all.
    Need some advice.
We have a dev/test 9.0.4 (10gr1) apps environment that has a specific domain. However the PROD domain is different as the person who installed it couldn't work around the fact that the server had a different domain name than test/uat. So they put in place a Virtual Host.
I want to fix this as PROD is different to dev/uat.
    1) I believe this can be done using the OUI_HOSTNAME of the runInstaller option on a new install
    Can anyone confirm this ??
    2) Once I build a NEW 9.0.4 infrastructure/middle tier with the correct domain - how do I:
    a) Migrate users from "bad" domain to new infrastructure tier domain and maintain all SSO/privledges ?? Ldap export and import ??
    b) Migrate my content across => we are using oracle Portal and an OC4J instance. I assume I can do a 'portal export' from old install and import into new install ?? IS this valid ....... and then just re-deploy the "ear" file to new application server install ??
    many thanks on your advice

I figured out the answer shortly after posting my question:  I booted to new disk in the FW enclosure while attached to my MBP, and ran Migration Assistant, selecting to copy data from the (old) internal disk to "this mac".  I'll see how everything works six hours from now...

  • Backup to TM - reformat/install - TM files to new install?

I just bought the Time Capsule and am in the process of backing up my files via Time Machine.
I want to then reformat my hd and do a clean install of leopard and applications. My question is, once I format/reinstall, can I pull specific files and settings from the TM image to my new install?
After reinstalling all of my software and files, I am going to create a new image. This is probably a simple question but i've never used it... thanks!

    Welcome to Discussions!
Yes, you can restore user files from TM after an erase and install.
When you reboot from the install, migration assistant will come up, and you can restore user files.
However, if you think there's some corruption, (this is my recommendation) use Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper to clone the full hard drive, to both be sure you have a full working backup, and that you can manually restore EVERY file you need.
    Good luck!

    Free download, and install question.
I need to buy a larger h/d, but till then I would like to put as many programs as possible on a external usb drive that I have hooked up to my PC.  I've been able to do this with some other programs, and would like to try it with my Adobe Reader and Flash.  When down loading and installing it does not give me the option to install in a defferent location other then my C: drive.  Can this be done?  Thanks you?

From the MSI you have to create a MST (Transforms). In the MST create now the new property INSTALLDIR=F:\, where F: is your USB-drive. If you use then the command
    msiexec.exe /i [MSI] transforms=[MST]
Adobe Reader should be installed to F:

  • After software update and restart, acts like it's a new install?

    Greetings All,
After doing the recent software update on my son's 20" iMac C2D machine, I did the restart and once it reboots I get the "quick start" page as if it were a new install of Leopard and nothing were no user accounts set up. I can restart in target disc mode and connect to the iMac with my MBP, everything is still there, including all the recent files on the desktop. The Time Machine back up is also in tact.
Why can't it see the account and boot up? Any way to boot from the Time Machine back up? Any help is much welcomed at this point as my son needs to do some school work tonight.

By "quick start" do you mean the Setup Assistant that, among other things, lets you setup the first user account? If so, go with it. When you get to setting up that account, ensure that the "short name" exactly matches the name of the lost home folder. The new account will "adopt" that folder & you should be back in business.
FWIW... an alternative would be to setup a temporary account like "test". Once you have access to the system, you'd go to SysPrefs->Accounts and add a new user whose short name, again, matches the name of the home folder you want. In this case, it will say that a folder with that name exists & ask whether you want to use it. This method is useful if you can't remember the exact name of the folder in question - you can open the Users folder and copy the name letter for letter.

  • Transferring drivers over to new install

    Hi!
I'm a recent switcher (5 months), and since I've moved to OS X, I've installed, and subsequently uninstalled, untold piles of crap. Therefore I've decided that together with the external enclosure I'm getting for one of my hard drives, I'm going to do a fresh install.
However, my printer isn't supported my OS X. To get it to work, I had to install Xcode and use the Terminal to run some sort of Linux driver.
Because I plan on keeping my new install as lean and clean as possible, I'd like to avoid all the tedious mucking about in Xcode and simply copy the driver over. Is this possible?
The printer in question is a Minolta 1350W, and it's using the 13xx linux drivers.
    Thanks
    hudgie

Do you know where (all) the file(s)
    are?
    > That's what I want to know. Where are drivers kept?
And is it possible to just transfer one from one
    machine to another?
You really have to look at the source code package to determine where files will be installed when you do your own compiling. The usual install directories are /usr or /usr/local. It should be noted that you may have changed the default location when you built the driver.
I took a short look at the source code. Running a "./configure --help" includes the following --By default, `make install' will install all the files in`/usr/local/bin', `/usr/local/lib' etc. You can specify an installation prefix other than `/usr/local' using `--prefix', for instance `--prefix=$HOME'.After a quick "./configure" and "make" followed by a "make -n install", it appears that files were installed in /usr/local/bin and /usr/local/man/man1. I didn't do a full make install and check for all the files that would be installed and I may have missed other files that were installed somewhere in the /usr/local tree. There may well have been more than one file placed in each of the directories such as /usr/local and /usr/local/lib.
It does not appear that a PPD was generated during the build. I am assuming you used the PPD from the linuxprinting.org site. That PPD will be whereever you manually placed it.
To be sure you get all the files installed, it would indeed seem easier to install XCode and rebuild the package. XCode has a convenient uninstaller in /Developer/Tools. I think you will actually spend less time going this route than searching all over the indicated directories trying to determine which files you need to transfer.

  • For a complete new install, do I have to install Leopard 1st, then Snow?

Ok, now Snow is out, I want to reinstall from scratch, do I have to install leopard 1st (my iMac came with it pre installed and have disks) or can I just use the Snow Leopard DVD to install from scratch
I have backed up what I want , ie iTunes, videos, docs, and want to do a brand new install from scratch.
    cheers

Ok, so I can just do a complete fresh install of Snow, I'm not bothered about archive or anything, just a fresh copy of Snow, as if it came pre-installed from Apple factory.
I dont have a Time Machine backup yet, as I all I need for backup is iTunes Library, Videos, photos, everything else I'm not bothered about. So I take it can just manually copy these to my iMac after fresh install of Snow?
Also another question....I have a Intel iMac, bought Xmas 2007, spec wise It:
    Model Identifier: iMac7,1
Processor Name: Intel Core 2 Duo
    Processor Speed: 2 GHz
    Number Of Processors: 1
    Total Number Of Cores: 2
    L2 Cache: 4 MB
    Memory: 2 GB
    Bus Speed: 800 MHz
Do you think Snow will speed up my system, as now its a "bit old". It was the lowest spec when I bought it in the range (added another 1Gb RAM) but it was my 1st Mac ever, and all I could afford
    cheers

  • [Solved] Grub Error 15 at boot on new install.

So I was trying to avoid asking for help, but I honestly can't see what's wrong with my new install of arch.  I followed the beginner's guide all the way up to the part where you reboot and remove the liveCD.  It all went swimmingly until I rebooted and got:
    GRUB Loading stage1.5.
    GRUB Loading, please wait...
    Error 15
I don't know what's going on.  Error 15 is supposedly "file not found," but I don't know what file it's looking for since I have a grub.cfg that I created from the steps posted on the guide.  Any help is greatly appreciated.

    EDIT:
Just to be clear I followed the BIOS motherboard steps for GRUB.

Wat your disk en partition lay-out?

I'm following the beginner's guide instructions for a BIOS install.  After chroot I used the following:
    # pacman -S grub-bios
    # grub-install --target=i386-pc --recheck --force --debug /dev/sdb
    # cp /usr/share/locale/en\@quot/LC_MESSAGES/grub.mo /boot/grub/locale/en.mo
    # grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg
Aside from the warnings (that I think most people ignored) of a few files not existing during the installation of grub-bios, it all went fine.  The harddrive is definitely sdb (fdisk -l shows sda as my windows drive, not to mention I just formatted and partitioned sdb).  My partitions are laid out exactly as the guide tells me to (/ on /dev/sdb1 and /home on /dev/sdb2).  They are the only partitions on sdb.
DSpider wrote:Lol... a full reinstall wasn't needed. This mentality is typical to a Windows user.
I don't appreciate your condescension.  These forums have (up to this point) always been really helpful and friendly to me; just because I'm posting in the newbie corner doesn't mean I'm not familiar with linux, and even if I were unfamiliar with linux I would hope that you could show more respect and compassion for someone who needs help than to ostracize them and laugh about their problem.  I posted here because I figured I didn't need to waste the time of the mods and users who offer help in the installation subforum with something that I assumed would be a trivial fix.  I expected courteous, thoughtful responses.  I was apparently wrong to assume.
I reinstalled because I didn't know what else to do, and figured that there might have been a chance that I made a mistake.  Since your previous advice was literally getting me nowhere I figured the 10 minutes of my time reinstalling took up would be worth the potential of fixing my problem.
To answer your questions that are actually helpful:
I don't have grub installed on another drive and my drive and partition layout is detailed above.  As for boot priority, it hasn't changed since I first installed linux in 2006 and it's worked ever since; I'm performing this operation to clear what was once a drive cluttered with a few other distros that I've abandoned since 2007 when I found Arch (yes I am actually that lazy).
Is it possible that my old installation of grub might have stayed on the drive even after I rid it of the old partitions (since it's stored in MBR)?  If so does the installation of grub2 I'm performing not get rid of it?
    Hope this helps,
