New Mac user-can receive but can't send BellSouth mail

I am hoping someone can help-I see that others have had this problem but I still cannot get my bellsouth email account to send! I can receive mail just fine-but when I try to send it goes to my outbox and then it times out. I have 2 gmail accounts and they work very well. But my bellsouth account is my main email and if I can't get it to work in mail I will be SO disappointed!!
I set up my bellsouth account-they are my isp so i see no conflict there. Spoke to customer support-we went through all the settings and confirmed that settings and ports were correct. On the outgoing mail server description, it says Bellsouth (offline). I know it has to be online to send. They gave up and suggested I call apple support. I did that-we tried many things from changing ports to deleting the account and starting over-on the phone for almost an hour and finally he said "sorry-it won't work." He said that sometimes he can get these to work and more often they don't. Very frustrating! I have gone through these forums for hours-can't find anything that works. Has anyone been able to resolve this problem? I have been a pc user for many years but loved my iphone so much I thought it would be great to switch to a mac. But now I am questioning my decision! Any help would be most appreciated.

I went in and set up the account from scratch again. I did not check the "use authentication" box so it is not required. After the account is setup, and I check the box that says "take the account online", I go to the accounts page. For the outgoing mail server, it says Bellsouth (the name I gave it) and then it says offline. I also have gone in and edited the server list-and it always goes back to offline.
Well-just tried to send again a message to myself...IT WORKED! How 'bout that! Still says offline-but if I go to the mailbox menu at the top, then go to online status-it says "take bellsouth offline". This must mean that I am actually online!!
I guess what worked was just to keep trying. I did not do anything different this time-I had tried it with and without authentication before. But I am happy to report that I am now sending mail. If anything changes, I will repost. To those that responded--Thank you so much for your help!!

  • New Mac Mini can't send mail, but can receive

Just received my new Mac Mini the other day but have had problems sending mail. I can receive mail, but cannot send at all. I believe I have all of my settings correct. What can I do, it's very frustrating.

One thing is for sure, I didn't find Roadrunner's http://help.rr.com/HMSLogic/emailhelptopic.aspx to be very helpful.
For the heck of it, for outgoing mail port, try custom port instead of default port and enter 25, 465, or 587 singly each one at a time and see if that buys you anything. If they use SSL (and that wasn't apparent to me from their help page whether they do or not) you would likely want to try username/password authentication for smtp.
Also, you might take a peek in Keychain Access and delete any existing entries that pertain to anything wi.rr.com. Mail would then re-prompt you for that account login information when it attempts to connect to the smtp or pop servers.
If the old computer was Leopard, have you tried copying over your $HOME/Library/Mail and $HOME/Library/Mail Downloads folders and your $HOME/Library/Preferences/com.apple.mail.plist file to the new computer?
Have you called the ISP and told them that the old computer works fine and the new computer with identical account settings doesn't and that you would like to doublecheck with them the account settings (type of account is POP? what is POP port?, what is SMTP port? verify pop and smtp server names, using SSL on POP? On SMTP? Do they use password authentication on SMTP? (If they use "None" that implies they use the WAN IP address to authenticate -- if its one of theirs, your good)
I don't think reinstalling Mail will gain you anything.
At least we know who the ISP and mail provider is, maybe another user/helper that has the same provider can weigh in here. I do not use rr.com so any other advice from me at this point would be like drawing random straws.

  • New computer, old .mac account, can't send e-mails!

A friend gave us his old Titanium PowerBook G4. We have an iBook G3 that we've been using and I'm trying to set up the new/old PB for my wife as her personal computer.
I upgraded osx on the pb and then tried to configure e-mail for my wife's account. I copied all of the info. exactly as it is in her old account on the ibook. For some reason, it will not send e-mails, though it will recieve them.
When I try to send e-mails, I get this error:
"Use the pop-up menu below to try a different outgoing mail server. All messages will use this server until you quit Mail or change your network settings."
I switched the port number from 25 to the recommended one and also double-checked that everthing was copied correctly. But we still can't send mail from her computer. I couldn't find the answer with searches... any thoughts? Thanks!

    Thanks!
Here's what the error message is:
Cannot send message using the server
    smtp.mac.com:wifes.address
Use the pop-up menu below to try a different outgoing mail server. All messages will use this server until you quit Mail or change your network settings.
    Message from: Wife's Name <[email protected]>
    Send message using: smtp.mac.com:wifes.address
So, I'm not sure what to do from here. I've tried various port addresses and none work. All that happens when I try to send a message is that I get the above error and the draft goes into the outbox.
Thanks in advance for any help, this has been really vexing for us and I'd love to get my wife up and running.

  • New Tiger Install -- Can't send e-mail

This is my second post on this problem -- more info.
It seems my problem is that I can't get mail to recognize my e-mail server. When I go to the accounts pane of the mail preferences, and try to add a new server, I can't get mail.app to talk to it. I'm probably making some very simple and dumb mistake, but I can't figure out what it is.
I may have done myself in because when I tried to edit the server list, the only thing I could do was delete. I did, and can't get back to a working e-mail system. BTW... I can recieve fine. Just can't send anything.

Is this email account and SMTP server provided by your ISP used for connecting to the internet?

  • New Mac user can't get dial-up to authenticate

I just acquired an older iBook (version=2.2), OS X 10.2.8(6R73). I've never used a Mac before and am currently learning how to use the system and hardware.
Being stuck with dial-up I set up the internal 56K modem for my ISP (PeoplePC).
It's pretty simple (I thought)--using TCP/IP PPP--account name, password and phone number. The modem dials, connects, and after several seconds disconnects (Failed to authenticate).
I then tried to use the terminal window and after connecting command line says--Account name//login/login/:--I enter my account name.
Then the next command line--Password:--the cursor is one space away from the colon and blinking and doesn't move when I enter my password (normal or not?).
The next line says--**Bad password-- and goes back to the (enter) Account name.
I can do this about three times before my modem times out and hangs up.
The PPC people are useless (We don't know anything about Macs- you need to get Mac help). Of course when I had any problems in the past with what always turned out to be THEIR software the first thing they do is tell you that it's YOUR computer, system, browser, Microsoft, phone company, etc.
So I can't get anyone there that's smart enough to at least tell me if there's any particular entries to be made in logging in (scripting or HTML or handshake protocol or whatever). I can set up a manual dialup connection on my Windows PC without their software, no problem.
Incidentally, I love the way this iBook automatically gets itself right into my Windows network and on-line with ICS through an ethernet crossover cable. I'm on right now with it but I don't want to have two computers next to each other online (especially through a single phone connection). Talk about multi-tasking! I've got about 4 tabs open in IE8 on the win PC and a couple more here (Mac) on Firefox. So I never have to wait for a page to load (SLOW); by the time I'm done with one several others have already loaded.
I'm really starting to like this Mac. I don't know whether it's the machine or the Firefox browser (never used anything other than IE) or both but the same pages load really quick and errorlessly compared to my other box, which is sharing the connection.
Well, after making a short story long, does anyone have a clue on helping me get my new (to me) iBook on-line on it's own?

Hi, Q Lazarus. Thanks for the reply. That link you included led me to what I needed.
Since I couldn't directly download the Dialguard 1.8.7 zipfile (unless, I guess, I set up an account at the Linux forum site) I decided to just Google and get it off the web.
I found that it was pretty hard to find but in lookong around I found other Linux forum references regarding PeoplePC's dial-up problems.
Rather than using DialGuard others solved the problem by simply adding "@peoplepc.com" to their account name.
So that was the only thing I changed and--HAPPY DAYS ARE HERE AGAIN! My modem dialed right in and connected. And much quicker than PPC's software (dialer) on my Win PC.
After screwing around for several days and pulling my hair out in frustration trying to get my Mac on-line I was done in a few minutes, thanks to your input.
I will mark this thread "Solved" and get on with learning to use my "new" iBook system.
Again, many thanks for the most helpful reply.

  • *New Mac User* In love but mail not sending grrrrr.....

I am sure this is a common problem for Newbies like to me. Could someone please walk me through the problem I am having with the following error message:
Sending the message content to the server failed.
Select a different outgoing mail server from the list below or click Try Later to leave the message in your Outbox until it can be delivered.
    Sending from: ***** <*****@mac.com>
I have tried switching outgoing port to 587...read that somewhere but still no luck..any suggestions?
    Thanks alot :o)

Do you have an ISP account as well as the mobileme one? If so is that working?
I have to set the outgoing server for my mobileme account to be my regular ISP server.
    Change this in Mail/Preferences/accounts.
I have never changed port numbers.
    Good luck

HI - new mac user here
When trying to view certain sites i receive the following text: "missing plug in" can anyone assist?
I think it is related to viewing video or clips.....

Well, if you're using Chrome, or Firefox go here this should also work with Safari. It will let you know if Flash is already installed in your browser. If your using Chrome it should have been intergrated. Were you able to get Flash installed so you can view video clips? Post back to let us know. Hope this helps. Also install Perian. See if that helps as well.

Again, that's not a problem - if you purchase Mountain Lion through the App Store, it's been updated to 10.8.2 - and when there are other updates available, you can just download and install them as well.
Just go to the App Store and purchase and install ML. Then run Software Update (Apple menu) to see if there are any updates available for your machine. I keep my System Preferences>Software Update prefs set to check automatically -
Some people would rather check manually. No big deal, just buy it and install it.

I have not idea how you do it with Picasa but with iPhoto you either export the photos to a desktop folder and upload from there or burns that folder to CD - or from the upload window use the media browser in the lower left hand corner of the upload windows - media ==> photos ==> iPhoto

I have a new mac pro 'can', and was checking settings. I gave a user who I didn't recognize 'no access', and lost all access to my computer immediately. Tried to change access back, but I was totally locked out (even as the admin). It won't even reboot!  I thought it might have been back when I gave Adobe access (when they had their Cloud fiasco and my machine kept crashing with Premiere). Can anyone suggest anything?

  • I'm a new Mac user....how can i create a "sticky" with automatically reoccurring bullet points?

I'm a new Mac user....how can i create a "sticky" with automatically reoccurring bullet points?

On my previous Mac (long, sad story) I had Office for Mac and liked it a lot.  I was collaberating on some fairly complex legal documents, and never noticed any compatibility problems with Windows Office.  That said, it is expensive.  For most documents, I simply open the Word document in Pages and export it to Word when I am finished.  I sometimes get the message that there is a missing font, but the computer uses a substitute that is quite acceptable.  I have never had someone say that they had difficulty with a document I exported to Word.
Numbers and Excel aren't as compatible in my experience, and I have gotten some surprises when I hadn't tweaked the settings properly when exporting to Excel.
The other component of iWork is Keynote, and I like it much better than Powerpoint; to me it is just easier to use. I have never tried converting back and forth between Keynote and Powerpoint.
Depending on what grade your kids are in and what they are doing, I think I would start off with iWork and see what, if any, problems they encounter.  Of course, if they are going to use the computer for a class in Office or its components, your kids are going to need a Windows machine with Windows Office, because Office for Mac is enough different that when the teacher says, "Now, move your mouse here and click on....", your kids are going to be lost.
    Hope this is useful.

I am using CC adobe Acrobat to combine multiple pdfs and add page numbers. As of about 2 weeks ago the mac users can no longer read the page numbers they get a font error message and see only -- where the page information should be. The pc users do not have this same problem. When I replace our regular font (URW Grotesk) with a system font (Verdana) everyone is able to read the page numbers. This is a new issues, I have been creating these documents in the same way for years without a problem. I have been on hold and on and off calls for the last two hours, I keep getting hung up on once I find someone in adobe support to talk to!

    Hi KnoopL,
Are the Mac users using Preview to view the pdfs or Adobe Reader?
