New MacBook Pro slower than a snail

I have just upgraded to a new MacBook, and am having speed issues, first with Mountain Lion and now with Mavericks. It seems as though almost all operations, even selecting a file in the Finder, bring up the beach ball of death, and opening applications like Keynote or Pages can take 30 or more seconds. I am not here to knock Apple, although as a 20+ year user I am disappointed since this is the first time I have ever encountered anything lke this, but I am lost as to where to begin to correct this. Below is the latest EtreCheck output -any suggestions will be gratefully received.

First, back up all data immediately unless you already have a current backup. If you can't back up, stop here. Do not take any of the steps below.
Step 1
This diagnostic procedure will query the log for messages that may indicate a system issue. It changes nothing, and therefore will not, in itself, solve your problem.
If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
syslog -k Sender kernel -k Message CReq 'GPU |hfs: Ru|I/O e|find tok|n Cause: -|NVDA\(|pagin|timed? ?o' | tail | open -ef
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V). I've tested these instructions only with the Safari web browser. If you use another browser, you may have to press the return key.
The command may take a noticeable amount of time to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear.
A TextEdit window will open with the output of the command. Normally the command will produce no output, and the window will be empty. If the TextEdit window (not the Terminal window) has anything in it, stop here and post it — the text, please, not a screenshot. The title of the TextEdit window doesn't matter, and you don't need to post that.
Step 2
There are a few other possible causes of generalized slow performance that you can rule out easily.
Disconnect all non-essential wired peripherals and remove aftermarket expansion cards, if any.
Reset the System Management Controller.
Run Software Update. If there's a firmware update, install it.
If you're booting from an aftermarket SSD, see whether there's a firmware update for it.
If you have a portable computer, check the cycle count of the battery. It may be due for replacement.
If you have many image or video files on the Desktop with preview icons, move them to another folder.
If applicable, uncheck all boxes in the iCloud preference pane. See whether there's any change.
Check your keychains in Keychain Access for excessively duplicated items.
Boot into Recovery mode, launch Disk Utility, and run Repair Disk.
If you have a MacBook Pro with dual graphics, disable automatic graphics switching in the Energy Saverpreference pane for better performance at the cost of shorter battery life.
Step 3
When you notice the problem, launch the Activity Monitor application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Activity Monitor in the icon grid.
Select the CPU tab of the Activity Monitor window.
Select All Processes from the View menu or the menu in the toolbar, if not already selected.
Click the heading of the % CPU column in the process table to sort the entries by CPU usage. You may have to click it twice to get the highest value at the top. What is it, and what is the process? Also post the values for User, System, and Idle at the bottom of the window.
Select the Memory tab. What value is shown in the bottom part of the window for Swap used?
Next, select the Disk tab. Post the approximate values shown for Reads in/sec and Writes out/sec (not Reads in andWrites out.)
Step 4
If you have more than one user account, you must be logged in as an administrator to carry out this step.
Launch the Console application in the same way you launched Activity Monitor. Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar.
Select the 50 or so most recent entries in the log. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combinationcommand-C. Paste into a reply to this message (command-V). You're looking for entries at the end of the log, not at the beginning.
When posting a log extract, be selective. Don't post more than is requested.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some personal information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting. That should be easy to do if your extract is not too long.

  • Brand new Macbook Pro slower than my 2006 Macbook

I bought a new Macbook Pro last month and upgraded the RAM to 4 GB and the hard drive to 500 GB. My previous Mac was a mid-2006 Macbook with 2 GB RAM.
I was expecting it to be noticeably faster than my 2006 Macbook (which is still running Tiger/10.4), but it isn't. Two things are particularly noticeable.
    1) Startup time. The 2006 Macbook is 5 or 10 seconds faster starting up.
    2) Safari. Safari is a couple of seconds faster loading identical websites on the 2006 Macbook. I tried updating Safari on the Macbook Pro to the new Safari 4 beta, and that is slightly faster, but still noticeably slower than on my Macbook.
I've tried running the set of Applescripts called "Maintenance" (available on the web) to do all regular maintenance tasks.
I've run software update. Everything is up to date.
Any suggestions of other things I should be checking to try to improve the speed of my Macbook Pro are much appreciated.
I find it really mystifying that performance is so noticeably worse on a brand new, much more powerful machine.
    Thanks

    Thanks for the replies.
In re the OS, I personally don't see many significant improvements in OS 10.5. Sure, little things here and there, but major power improvements over 10.4 that should cause startup time to be slower? I don't see it. I'm surprised in the design phase Apple's software engineers would allow longer startup time (always one of their biggest selling point over the Windows world) in return for such things as being able to hit the space bar in the finder to open a document quickly. I'm not using Time Machine, for instance, so that shouldn't be slowing down startup... or at least actually loading it in functioning mode shouldn't be slowing things down.
In re Safari, I'm doing as scientific a test as I possibly can here at home. Both computers sitting right next to each other, connected to the same network wirelessly, clicking on the same web link at exactly the same time. My 2006 Macbook is consistently faster at loading the page. Even more, it is significantly faster at loading the page to a "usable" point. For instance, if I click on the main page of the New York Times, the 2006 Macbook will load faster and will let me scroll down much earlier in the load process. On the 2009 MBP, the page shows up a few seconds slower, and it takes another few seconds more before the spinning beach ball stops and I can scroll down on the page. This is true both with Safari 3 and 4 on the MBP.
I just find it weird that a much more powerful computer, with a "new, improved" operating system and twice the amount of RAM, is noticeably more sluggish on these really basic tasks.
My next step is to go to the Apple store and try to compare mine to some other MBPs...
I have issues with some developments at Apple recently. For instance, the gen 2 iPod shuffle strikes me as a perfect design. Does it need to be smaller? Moving the controls to the headset seems really weird to me, much less convenient than the old one. I know that comment is OT, I just am starting to wonder about some decisions at Apple.
Not enough to make me complain seriously... I still vastly prefer Apple to the other options. But that sense I had for years that somebody really smart is paying attention to all these details and getting them right... that's starting to fade away for me. On the other hand, I do not have an iPhone and I think it's clear a lot of Apple's resources are going into the iPhone these days.

  • New Macbook Pro slower than old one.

I recently got a new Macbook Pro, unibody, with 2.8 Ghz core 2 duo and 4 GB Ram. I am upgrading from a Macbook Pro with the previous body design, that is 2.5 Ghz core 2 duo and came with 2GB RAM but I upgraded to 4GB myself.
I got the new MBP, migrated some applications and my settings. Now when I start Firefox I sometimes get the spinning beach ball for a few moments before my homepage loads. Also for example, if I have 2 tabs open, with one playing a youtube video in the background and I'm browsing in the other, the video will stutter and I'll get the beach ball for a few moments when I try to go to another page. This happens no matter what browser I try (Firefox, Safari, Camino). And it never happens on my older MBP, it's a little annoying that a system that is 2 years older seems to perform better.
    Any ideas or tips?

You might want to check that you have selected a startup disk as "Macintosh HD" so the OS x knows where to boot from. If there is no selection under startup items in System Preferences then boot up is delayed by a few seconds as OS X would look for a functional startup disk.
Check and see if this works for you in bringing down boot times.
PS> Also check what login items you have in the lisr under Account.

  • New MacBook Pro slower wifi than iBookG4

My new MacBook Pro tests at a slower download speed than my iBook G4 1.42 GHz.
I am running a wireless network using a Belkin router (b&g enabled) on a cable network connection (20Mb/2Mb).
When connected via ethernet, the MacBook Pro gets 20,000 kbps download. When connected via wifi, it gets 7-10,000 kbps. (DNS servers are identified and listed in the network control panel.)
The iBook gets 15,000-20,000 kbps via wifi. The iBook is running 10.4.11.
Is this a function of the MacBook Pro or Leopard?
(speeds measured with repeated tests at speakeasy.net).

You can definitely thank Leopard for that.

  • Brand new macbook pro slows down after I transfer files on from old computer

Hey, I just purchased a brand new Macbook Pro 3.5 GhZ Haswell processor, 500 gb of flash memory, 16 gb of RAM, OS X Mavericks, 17" retina display and while it's been great upon first booting up after I transferred over my music and books and docs from my old mac (about 150 gb worth (so I still have over 300 gb free on the new one)) I've seen a massive slow down and it's started giving me the beach ball of death which was the main reason I got a new macbook as my old one was beach balling so much it was nearly unusable. Very upset that this brand new stupidly expensive computer is already doing this. Any advice is apppreciated.

Either your RAM is no good, of poor quality, the wrong specs or it's not installed correctly or it got subjected to static electricity when you put it in.
Best Buy isn't as Mac centric, thus the quality of RAM that Mac's require may not be there.
You should have purchased from Crucial.com or Other World Computing or similar that tests the RAM to make sure it works the first time you put it in, as it costs everyone money to ship bad RAM back and forth.
I put in 16GB a couple of days ago, took five minutes and it works perfectly.
Nothing like top tier RAM for a top of the line machine, especially with all those tiny, easy to lose screws Apple uses.

  • New Macbook Pro - less than a week old

    Hi all,
I just recently got a Macbook Pro, had it for 3 weeks before it got stolen and got it replaced through insurance.
Since getting this new one, I have noticed its considerably slow to start compared my previous one. Anyone can suggest why? before it would make the apple noise instantly and go straight into log in page in matter of few seconds but now it takes a while.... like 10 to 20 seconds... any suggestions??

I have phoned up Apple to ask about this... and they said on average MBP should take up about 15 to 20 seconds... and they reckon it seems just about right.. nevertheless they helped me to perform few things... to reset the hardware etc and did step by step apple hardware test... and came up with nothing wrong... so they ensured that its normal..and perhaps my previous one was lucky one with real fast boot up time...
but suggested that i reinstall os x if i was still worried... so have done all that and updated all the softwares etc.. seems just about the same if not marginally faster... so maybe i was just paranoid... i dont know.. but ican assure you guys that the one i had previously was definitely faster eh... hmmm
will try the boot up option later on...and keep you posted. other than that thanks heaps...
oh and i have no other problems... its running smooth as once its up and runing...

the higher-end non-Retina 13-inch MacBook Pro comes with a 2.9 GHz Core i7 CPU.  The higher-end Retina 13-inch MacBook Pro comes with a 2.8 GHz Core i7 CPU. Both of these models are dual-core CPUs. The 15-inch Retina models have slower, quad-core CPUs. Whether the higher-end non-Retina dual-core CPU or one of the Retina quad-core CPUs is faster depends upon the particular task that you’re trying to do; for tasks that lend themselves to multithreaded processing, the quad-core CPU will probably finish faster, despite having a slower CPU.

  • MacBook Pro slower than iMac wifi

My MacBook Pro (2 yrs old), is MUCH slower on our wifi network, than my imac (5 yrs old).
The MBP is actually closer to the router, and when I run speedtest.net, the imac is showing better/faster results than the MBP.
    Any ideas would be great.
    thanks

The operating systems are the same, as well as browsers. This has been going on for some time now. I notice it especially when updating software, like iphone, from the Apple servers via itunes or app store.
Regular web browsing with Safari is also much slower on the MBP. I usually have it connected to the power cord too, so that's probably not it. any other ideas?
    Ill try disabling IPv6
    thanks!

  • Brand New MacBook Graphics Slower Than Year Older Model!

    Hi,
Are the new late 2007 MacBooks supposed to have slower graphics than the previous year's models? If I try to run the new Leopard Arabesque screen saver on a 2007 MacBook with a Intel GMA X3100 graphics chip, the animation is jerky and stroboscopic. However if I try Arabesque on a year old MacBook, the animation is smooth and fluid.
Is this a fault with the particular 2007 MacBook I've tested, or are they all like this?

It's very interesting as most users never notice the difference, just those that actually push their equipment a little.
As with most issues like this I would invite you to open a ticket in the [Apple Bug Reporting System|http://bugreport.apple.com> so that Apple can add your information to their impact report and get this fixed quicker.
    Hope this helps! 

  • Why is the MacBook Pro slower than my G4 1.25mhz?

I have been having issues with my MBP for a while now. It was 1.5 G of RAM and has been optimized. My iMovie runs very slow and it takes forever sometimes to empty the trash. It is just a very sensitive system? I can throw almost anything at my desktop and it operates fine. I thought the MBP would be blazing and its not. I understand that some of the applications I use are not native, but it shouldn't be running this slow. I have about 30gigs left on the hard drive also. Can anyone help?

Using a third-party optimizer (i.e., defragmenter) is risky on Intel Macs. I'm not sure there are any compatible defraggers. Improper defragging could be the cause of your problem. Transferring applications that were all PPC apps that have now replaced the pre-installed Intel apps. No wonder things are slow.
I suspect you need to erase the drive and reinstall the OS or at the very least repair the hard drive then do an Archive and Install.
For future reference OS X does not require defragmentation. OS X defrags all files under 20 MBs on the fly.
Here's some useful info on migrating from PPC to Intel Macs:
A Basic Guide for Migrating to Intel-Macs
If you are migrating a PowerPC system (G3, G4, or G5) to an Intel-Mac be careful what you migrate. Keep in mind that some items that may get transferred will not work on Intel machines and may end up causing your computer's operating system to malfunction.
Rosetta supports "software that runs on the PowerPC G3 or G4 processor that are built for Mac OS X". This excludes the items that are not universal binaries or simply will not work in Rosetta:
Classic Environment, and subsequently any Mac OS 9 or earlier applications
    Screensavers written for the PowerPC
    System Preference add-ons
    All Unsanity Haxies
    Browser and other plug-ins
    Contextual Menu Items
Applications which specifically require the PowerPC G5
    Kernel extensions
Java applications with JNI (PowerPC) libraries
See also What Can Be Translated by Rosetta.
In addition to the above you could also have problems with migrated cache files and/or cache files containing code that is incompatible.
If you migrate a user folder that contains any of these items, you may find that your Intel-Mac is malfunctioning. It would be wise to take care when migrating your systems from a PowerPC platform to an Intel-Mac platform to assure that you do not migrate these incompatible items.
If you have problems with applications not working, then completely uninstall said application and reinstall it from scratch. Take great care with Java applications and Java-based Peer-to-Peer applications. Many Java apps will not work on Intel-Macs as they are currently compiled. As of this time Limewire, Cabos, and Acquisition are available as universal binaries. Do not install browser plug-ins such as Flash or Shockwave from downloaded installers unless they are universal binaries. The version of OS X installed on your Intel-Mac comes with special compatible versions of Flash and Shockwave plug-ins for use with your browser.
The same problem will exist for any hardware drivers such as mouse software unless the drivers have been compiled as universal binaries. For third-party mice the current choices are USB Overdrive or SteerMouse. Contact the developer or manufacturer of your third-party mouse software to find out when a universal binary version will be available.
Also be careful with some backup utilities and third-party disk repair utilities. Disk Warrior (does not work), TechTool Pro (pre-4.5.1 versions do not work), SuperDuper (newest release works), and Drive Genius (untested) may not work properly on Intel-Macs. The same caution may apply to the many "maintenance" utilities that have not yet been converted to universal binaries.
Before migrating or installing software on your Intel-Mac check MacFixit's Rosetta Compatibility Index.

  • New MacBook seems slower than it should be

I have had my new 2Ghz Core 2 with 2GB of ram for about a month or so now and I have to say I have not been that impressed with the speed of the machine. It boots, and shuts down like a blaze and once applications have been opened and closed once they too open and close like a blaze. With that said, applications just seem to take longer to open that first time than they do on my old PC with a single core 1.8Ghz Athlon.
Now this is my first mac so is this just me?
    Help

    From http://neowiki.sixthcrusade.com/index.php/NeoOfficeandAqua :
    "So...is NeoOffice written in Java?
    No.
NeoOffice is a Mac OS X native version of OpenOffice.org that uses small amounts of Java code for graphics drawing and configuration.
OpenOffice.org is written primarily in platform-agnostic C++. However, NeoOffice takes advantage of Mac OS X's advanced Java integration to tap into the Mac OS X look-and-feel. In other words, the little bits of Java in NeoOffice primarily have to do with operations that affect how the application appears to the user. The "guts" of the office suite are written in C++. (The code that makes up NeoOffice is 99% OpenOffice.org code shared among all OpenOffice.org platforms and 1% Mac OS X-specific code in Java, C++, C, and Objective-C.)"

  • Macbook pro slow as a snail on a Monday.

Well it got quite slow a while ago and I sent it into atmac. They said it needed more ram and put 2GB in for the charming price of €300. It was fast for a while but is now even worse, and applications such as mail and safari are crashing most excessively.

Well, I would suggest a major spring cleaning, to try and eliminate any sort of crud that might be clogging up the works:
    # Back it up just in case something goes wrong.
    # If really paranoid, stick the Install DVD #1 in, reboot holding down the D key, run all Apple Hardware Test items. Repair if anything found amiss.
    # Keep/stick Install DVD #1 in, reboot holding down the C key, run Disk Utility, Repair Disk. Repeat until no errors are found. If unable, repair disk with stronger stuff such as DiskWarrior.
    # Reboot holding down the Shift key (Safe Boot Mode). Wait awhile, will take longer that usual. Remove Install DVD #1.
    # Run Disk Utility, Repair Disk Permissions. Wait (quite) awhile.
    # Reboot into Normal Mode.
    # Force the Daily, Weekly, Monthly scripts to run using OnyX or any other suitable utility.
    # Purge old logs using OnyX or any other suitable utility.
    # Purge all caches using OnyX or any other suitable utility.
    # Reboot, enjoy.
Yes, I will catch major flak from the purists: "Nooo, don't purge the caches, the system can maintain them without your intervention" Don't care: I'd rather it create them completely afresh, than have it screw up trying to figure out if a cache is corrupt or not.

  • 13" MacBook Pro slows to a snail's pace - constant spinning pinwheel...

My MB Pro was getting a bit slow using Lightroom, so I restarted it. Since then everything is moving at 1% of it's normal rate. About 10 minutes to start up, 15 minutes to transfore 8GB of data to an external FW800 disk, bout a minute for a finder menu pane to respond to a click, immediate spinning pizza wheel on any mouse click. i.e. unusable. There's 25GB of free HD space.
Activity Monitor does't show any apps hogging RAM and this happens when only the finder is open (i.e. no major memory usage). Could it be that one of the 2GB memory chips has become faulty?
Unless I hear otherwise on this forum, I'll try taking one out and then the other.
If that doesn't work, I'd be grateful for any other suggestions.
    Many thanks.
    Richard

Start the machine up from your most recent OS installer DVD, open Disk Utility from the Utilities menu, select your hard drive in the DU sidebar, click the First Aid tab, and check the hard drive's SMART status near the bottom of the DU window. Is it Verified or Failing?
If it's Verified, click the Repair Disk button and wait for the repair process to be complete. If any errors are reported to have been fixed, run it again until you get a "clean" run in which it's reported that the disk "appears OK."

  • Transfer all data from MacBook to new MacBook Pro

    Hi,
I am currently using a 13 inch Macbook purchased in 2007. The system has since been upgraded and it is now version 10.6.8.
I have also ordered and received a Macbook Pro (arrived yesterday!). The box has not been opened yet. My intention is to move everything (applications, data, etc.) from my old Macbook to this brand new one, so that the transition is absolutely seamless (without me having to install new software, for example).
I have been using the Time Machine to reguarly backup the data of my old Macbook.
Not being computer-savvy, I have the following couple of questions and would very much appreciate your advice:
    1. (While I have not figured out how to do it) Is using Time Machine to 'transfer' data the best way in terms of being able to acheive a seamless transition?
    2. I have a feeling that it is better to do the 'transfer' right from the beginning, when I first start up the new MacBook Pro, rather than beginning to use the Mac Pro now and then do the transfer. Am I right in this? (I have been kept from starting up my MacBook Pro for this precise reason).
    3. Would there be a conflict in terms of the difference in the version of the OSX in the 'transfer' process? My old Macbook is 10.6.8. I don't know what the version of the newly arrived MacBook Pro is. Suppose the MacBook Pro is a more 'advanced' version – would this difference block/affect my attempt to do the transfer? And relatedly, even if transfer were possible, would I suffer any loss in functionality of the MacBook Pro in this process?
Thank you for your help and patience!

10.7 won't run your Rosetta based software and third party hardware drivers.
You can use this site to determine what will/will not work.
    http://roaringapps.com/apps:table
IMO a new machine should get all new versions or copies of software.
Why import all the crap with Setup/Migration Assistant and possibly gunk up your machine? slow it down? have to delete stuff manually as their is no uninstaller for 10.7?
You CAN transfer the license provided you work with the developer and remove the other copy from the older machine. Contact the dev and get a new license key, they will likely want to keep you as a customer and assist.
However 10.7 is a all 64 bit OS, so a lot of third party software pehaps will require new upgraded versions than what you have on the 10.6 machine.
I have been using the Time Machine to reguarly backup the data of my old Macbook.
Good don't connect it to the new Mac or else it won't work to restore the old one.
As the 10.7 TM will then add IT's changes. Use a new drive to TM the 10.7 machine.
    1. (While I have not figured out how to do it) Is using Time Machine to 'transfer' data the best way in terms of being able to acheive a seamless transition?
Don't use Time Machine, leave that for only connecting to the older Mac, that's your backup for THAT machine, use a new drive for TM to the newer Mac for now or go without until this machine checks out.
Use Firewire Target Disk Mode instead to the older Mac.
Log into the new Mac and set it up with the same user name as on the old Mac.
Install all your 10.7 compatible programs first from fresh sources so they run faster longer. (user files should be the last thing installed on any new machine as they clog up a hard drive's speed)
Use a Firewire cable (and a 800 to 400 adapter if needed) to connect the old Mac to the new Mac, then hold T boot the old Mac, the old Mac's hard drive will appear on the Desktop of the new Mac.
Now you can simply drag and drop copy to your hearts content of any files you wish to keep on the new machine and leave the rest on the old machine.
Since you used the same user name, the files will work like iTunes playlists (you can change permisisons on them with Get Info if not)
You can choose to use Setup/Migration Assistant with a Mac in Firewire Target Disk mode, but I don't advise using either unless you have a really clean machine free of unwanted data or glitches.
    2. I have a feeling that it is better to do the 'transfer' right from the beginning, when I first start up the new MacBook Pro, rather than beginning to use the Mac Pro now and then do the transfer. Am I right in this? (I have been kept from starting up my MacBook Pro for this precise reason).
That's called Setup Assistant, later you can run Migration Assistant, but it creates another user in the process.
Both are not exactly perfect and don't provide a clean system, drag the old machines issues with them sometimes. However if your old machine is rather pristine, then fine. Most people's machines are messed up and a lot don't know it.
New Mac's come with 10.7, it possibly won't run a lot of your pre-existing 10.5 or 10.6 software.
And relatedly, even if transfer were possible, would I suffer any loss in functionality of the MacBook Pro in this process?
Yes, there is a possibility that if your old Mac is messed up slightly that those problems (as well as incompatible programs) can cause issues or slowdown behavior on the new Mac.
If this occurs then you'll have to wipe the whole mess, download Lion from Apple's severs (fast internet) and start all over again doing it manually.
IMO you should find out first all the 10.7 programs you need, and then install clean 10.7 versions of those programs from  original sources rather than import crap and have to go about removing stuff that won't work or risk a hosed machine.
Automation is nice, but it has it's drawbacks, it's stupid. If you have a very clean system, not a whole lot of other junk, system tweaks and gizmos running, then automation should be fine.

  • Can't watch videos posted to Facebook or YouTube on new macbook pro

    Hi -
Have a question about video.  All of the sudden, I can't open videos on my class site, Facebook, YouTube etc.  All I get is a black screen and a spinning circle.  I have a brand new macbook pro, less than 60-days old.  I also I need to be able to upload my own video and share it online.  I checked video status on my older macbook and I can view videos without a problem (so it's not my network.)
What is happening and why and how do I get it fixed?
    Thanks!
