New MacBook Pro - Storage in "About this Mac"

I just got a new MacBook Pro (256 GB storage) and set it up as a new computer (rather than migrating from previous computer).  I am curious about the amounts showing up in the Storage tab of About this Mac.  Here's my current allocation:
Apps: 11 GB
Other: 7 GB
Audio: 1 GB
Photos: 900 MB
Movies: 400 MB
I'm most interested in Audio, Photos and Movies since I haven't added any to the device nor have I synced with iCloud.  Perhaps they are files that are pre-loaded on the OS?
Does this look normal for a right out-of-the box MacBook Pro?

Parts of OS X.

  • What should I see in Storage Info about this mac if i have fusion drive

I have a 21" Customized Fusion Drive Imac. The start up times have been slow ( over a minute each time ) and I am starting to doubt I have Fusion installed.  My sister has a standard new 21" Imac and her system report reads identical to mine.
Should Fusion show up as anything different in the Storage section when you click 'about this mac'?
My storage shows identical to my sister who does not have Fusion Drive.  We both have a 1TB Sata disk icon.

    I also have 21.5"

  • New Macbook Pro Can't See Other Macs

My Powerbook and iMac can see each other over the network and do file transfers, but my new Macbook Pro can't. The other computers show up in Bonjour Browser, but when I try to connect to them (either via their computer name, e.g. my-computer.local, or by ip) it can't. It tells me the address is wrong. It can't even ping them, and they can't ping it. It's weird because I can access both the internet and the router settings.

After I did that Airport stopped working. The menubar icon said "Airport not configured" and there were no network interfaces in System Preferences. So I tried just putting the airport prefs back, and restarting. The same thing happened, so I had to put the whole folder back where it was.

  • Headphone jack not working on new Macbook Pro what is causing this?

My 17 inch Macbook Pro is less than two weeks old. The headphone jack does not recognize the headphones about half the time. This occurs with several pairs of headphones and yes, they are ther right size. This is really frustrating on a brand new 3500 dollar machine. What is causing this? It almost seems as if the headphones cannot make contact due to the fact that the connection is too far recessed. I don't live near an Apple store so dealing with this is going to be a P.I.T.A. Anyone have any ideas on how I might fix this issue? Thanks!

Hi, and thanks for your reply. I didn't have a red light emitting from the jack. I had already checked in the sound preferences to make sure the settings were correct. The headphones were not being recognized. This was not working with several differing sets of headphones. I made a phone appt. with Applecare. The laptop PRAM was reset and it works. There is still a bit of a delay when I plug in the headphones before they are recognized and I do feel the port is just a bit "off" as the no headphones plug all the way in. They seem to just sit almost flush but, not quite. However, resetting it resolved the issue to a satifactory level. Applecare said the issue was that not enough power was getting to that function on my laptop. They gave me the case number and I can use it if I have any further problem when I take the laptop in with me to any Apple service center. I was quite satisfied with how this was handled by Apple and if I have anymore issues will follow up.
I love  this laptop but, even though this is working now I do feel that port is somewhat recessed a bit much.
I also want to add that this is my first Mac and despite having had this issue I was extremely impressed with the Applecare call that I got to help resolve this. One of the reasons I went with a Mac was the reputation for service Apple has. I was fed up with Sony to the hilt. I was glad I went with this Mac despite the headphone issue because had I still been with Sony, I'd have been give a major run around to deal with this issue. So far, Apple has tried everything possible to help me with this and assured me should I have any further issue they will immediately resolve it or give me a new machine. WAY better than dealing with Sony! I do not regret going with this MAC headphone issue or not!

  • MacBook Pro - Storage Q about the "Other" category for GB

I have a MacBook Pro with 128 GB storage capacity.
    On it... I have
    20 Gb - Audio
    9 Gb - Movies
    5.6 Gb - Photos
    6 Gb - Apps
    0 Gb - Backup
    47 Gb - OTHER
    This leaves 32.41 Gb free.
My question is...How do I find out why is OTHER at 47? What is in there that is taking up over 1/3 of my storage space? How or where can I look for this, or clean it up?
    Thanks for any help.

I already tried going to "Get info" and "apply to enclosed items" but that doesn't work. I can copy over about 2gbs of music into my iTunes library but after that, it stops and I get the error. Please help. Any information that would lead to a solution would be great. Thanks!

  • Storage values under about this mac displaying incorrectly, but amount of space used IS correct. Any ideas?

I noticed recently that the "storage" under "about this mac" is displaying incorrectly. It doesn't show the correct values for my photos, videos, and audio files. It classifies this data under "other". I have been searching all over the internet, I went to the Apple genius bar yesterday and they recommended I re-install OSX. I did and it still shows up incorrectly. They were baffled, said they never really came across this issue. I have tried re-indexing spotlight, that didn't seem to help.
The amount of storage used IS correct. It just doesn't show up under the correct categories in storage, under about this mac. Also, the computer seems to work fine. No real issues. It's a mid 2012 MBP. 500gb hard drive. Most recent OSX is installed.
I DO NOT think it is local snapshots, cause my backups category is small and the amount of space used and free is correct. I have downloaded omnidisk sweeper to confirm this.
I have seen a few posts on here and around the web referring to this, but no real answers. I have also reviewed Pondini's info on this to no avail.
    Does anyone have any ideas?!?!

    Also,
I had installed a version of parallels with windows 7, but deleted it. Would parallels be causing my computer to index incorrectly? I I used appcleaner to delete all the parallels files so I do not have it anymore.

  • Need Help Connecting New MacBook Pro with Wireless Network Password

    Hi Linksys Community,
I would like to ask for your help and advice.
I recently purchased a new MacBook Pro, OS X, Version 10.8.3.
I need to setup a password to the wireless internet network (I've successfully done this)
    I have a Wireless G,  WRT54G Router.
When I setup the password, I'm not able to connect to the internet with my new MacBook Pro, which is running Mac OS X Version 10.8.3.  I get the message 'cannot connect to Internet, connection timeout) However, I'm able to connect to the internet with an older MacBook Pro, and my iPad. The password works fine with other models.
Would anyone be able to help me troubleshoot what is going on, or how I can solve this problem?
I would like to be able to have a password on my network, and use the internet with my new MacBook Pro.
I have read about manually adding in the MAC address of computers, and setting up a Wireless MAC fiter.
Does anyone think this would solve the problem?  if so, how can I find out the MAC address of my MacBook Pro?
Thanks in advance for you help and time!

    Hi,
    Thanks for your response.
Yes, my computer connects when your network is open (no password set)?
    I used WPA Pre-Shared Key.
Do you know how I could check if my new MacBook Pro is compatible with this?
    Thanks!

  • Will Pro Tools M-Powered 7.3 + Firewire 1814 work ok w new MacBook Pro?

I have Pro Tools M-Powered 7.3 that I have never been able to use and an M-Audio Firewire 1814 and it has also not been working with my soon-to-be junked PC for quite some time.
I'm going to scrap my entire system and go back to Mac and buy the new MacBook Pro for the express purpose of using it with my Firewire 1814 running Pro Tools M-Powered 7.3 (or an upgrade if there is one and I'm eligible to get it...?).
There are so many confusing instructions and tips out there and I just wanted to ask someone knowledgeable BEFORE I go out and spend $2,800 (that I don't have to begin with) that the laptop WILL indeed work with the above-described interface and software. I realize these are questions for M-Audio and Digidesign also (and I have asked), but in any case, I'm hoping you nice folks out there might lend me your expertise as well if you can spare a moment.
I did read on Digidesign's site that an external firewire drive or two would be ideal in use with Pro Tools M-powered. I haven't investigated enough to yet know how many firewire ports are on the top-tier new MacBook Pro, but I'm hoping it's enough to accommodate my 1814 interface and the externals recommended. (Or if you have knowledge/solutions/recommendations I'm all ears... help!).
If you know of any reason I shouldn't buy the laptop for use with the 1814 and Pro Tools M-Powere 7.3 as listed above, PLEASE tell me. I have an entire, very expensive PC system that for the better part of a year, has sat dormant because I can't get it to work with the interface and software without it creating noise and clicks. And no one was able to help me resolve this no matter how much noise I made and research I did trying to resolve the problems. And Pro Tools would always shut itself down at random during use despite the fact I have tons of RAM, disk space, a 2.13 GhZ processor, etc.
My hope is that a new (and portable-- something I also really need-- I plan to use this for performance as well with Ableton or similar... also interested in any information or opinions with regard to using the new MacBook Pro for that as well) Mac will resolve this...
That I'll just plug it in and everything will magically and easily work. I'd love to hear this is so. Any and all help is greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance for your expertise.

    orrisimo,
I, personally, do not have experience with this, but I have a friend who uses Macs exclusively, running Protools with a MOTU box. He does this professionally, not as a "hobby," and he is very knowledgeable about all the ins and outs.
As far as I know, he has absolutely no problems with Protools, ever. I recall that he did have to hold off a bit in upgrading to Leopard because of initial incompatibilities, but all that is in the past. He uses an old iBook (still), an Intel iMac, and more recently a Mac Pro powerhouse, all with no problems.
I would expect that everything will work seamlessly, provided you get word from the various support people that your versions and models are all compatible. If you want me to ask my friend about anything or get definitive confirmation from him, I would be happy to do so when I see him next. Let me know.
The newest 15" Macbook Pro comes only with a single Firewire 800 port. All the ports have been moved to the left side of the casing, so space is at a premium. FW 400 devices can be connected using an adapter cable, but there is still just that one port. If you go with a 15", you might need an Expresscard FW card to connect your FW drives (not a bad idea, anyway, since even older multi-port MBPs use just one controller).
The current 17" Macbook Pro has not yet been updated to the "unibody" construction, and still has both a FW 400 and a FW 800 port (again, FW 400 devices can be connected to an 800 port with an adapter). What the future unibody update will bring to the 17", we do not know.

  • Brand new MacBook Pro can't handle 720p Video in iMovie?

Well, my Black 2.0 GHz Core Duo MacBook has been replaced by the new 13" 2.26 Core 2 Duo MacBook Pro (I had to pay the difference) and I had it upgraded to 4GB of Ram and a 320GB Hard Drive!
I use a Kodak z1085 IS Digital Camera that records videos in 720p quality. When I import them into iMovie '09, I get this message:
This is the same thing that I got on my Core Duo MacBook. If I did not optimize the video, it would play choppy and could not keep up. On my new MacBook Pro, I still get this message saying that "my computer can't handle it." I can undersatnd my old Core Duo MacBook not being able to handle it, but when a brand new $2000 MacBook Pro can't handle 720p video, somthing has to be wrong here.
Are there cretin specs that indicate what computer can handle what? I'm guessing that this MacBook Pro CAN handle it, but why am I still getting that message? Do I need a $10,000 Mac Pro Tower system to make it happy?
Can anyone please explain this and help me out?
    Thanks,
    Scott

    +Well... for starters, the 2.26GHz MB Pro is not a $2,000 machine.+
Sorry...$1.5 thousand. Still too much for a brand machine that isn't "powerful enough" to run software that came out before the computer did.
+For all intents and purposes, it's an entry level notebook (despite the name "Pro")... with only slightly higher specifications than the white MacBook.+
So its only slightly better then the model that can only handle solitaire or any other basic application? I find it odd Apple would include iLife if these machines can't handle all of the features that they are supposed to. Pro means professional. that means this machine should be able to handle PRO applications like Final Cut, etc. But how can it if it can't even handle iMovie! Not to mention they screwed us out of using the old version...so I am stuck using this version!
+I'm not exactly sure what you mean when you say your black MacBook was replaced by a new 2.26GHz machine... but you had to pay the difference... It sounds like you were perhaps having problems with your MacBook and Apple allowed you to upgrade to the newest version paying something additional. If that's the case, it sounds like they were very generous as you had a first gen MacBook that was about three years old.+
Yes that is exactly what happened. My Black MacBook had many issues. I sent it in for repair three times and even took it to an Apple store when I was on vacation. (don't have any apple stores where I live) All of these repairs did not fix the problems and they kept on coming! So they offered to just replace it. But they don't sell the Black MacBook anymore. Only the white...and I don't like the white (thats why I bought the black!) so that is when they offered me the MacBook Pro if I paid the difference. In which I did. So that is how I got my new MacBook Pro.
+Are you saying that your video plays choppy on your new machine... or just that you get the message stating that it may play poorly?+
Both....It shows that message, and does play somewhat choppy. Not as choppy as the old MacBook though.
Like I said, I'd just like to know what Apple calls "good enough" so it doesn't display that warning.

  • HT1329 My large iTunes library is on an external hard drive. Can I set up iTunes on my new Macbook Pro and copy the library to it or are there any pitfalls?

I have my large iTunes library on an external hard drive. Can I set up ITunes on my new Macbook Pro and transfer/copy this library to the internal hard drive or are there any problems I should be aware of?

ITs an old Iomega 100gb external HD that has about 90gb of music on it. The Macbook has a 500gb HD. I would like to put the iTunes library on the internal HD so I have room to expand.
    Phil0124 wrote:
You can copy it to the internal hard drive as long as it fits on it. How big is your library, and how big is your internal HD?
The only thing you do not want to do is over-stuff the internal hard drive. The OS needs some space to operate correctly, so if your iTunes library uses up more than say 80 to 85% of the internal HD's available space it may not be a good idea to transfer it over.
With that said, the internal HD will provide slightly faster access to the library than the external would, but other than that, you can point iTunes to the external drive just fine.

  • I cannot get my new macbook pro running off my home wifi? HELP

I have my Mac desktop running off a dlink (Time Warner Cable) AirPort - BUT I cannot get my new macbook pro to even find this AirPort. It also wont connect as a wifi network. Everytime I try and enter the password it comes back with a connection timeout. What can I do to get macbook to recongnize my AirPort Base Station.

If I open up the AirPort App - it only says that it cannot find my AirPort wireless device (probably because I dont have one) and then if I go to networks to connect to my wifi I select my home network and it ask me to input a password (as it should) but when I try to put in my password for my network it says "connection timeout" and the screen behind it (where the options for wifi or ethernet ext are) it says no ip address under wifi (also the status indicator is showing yellow - since my wifi is on just not connected to a network. I cannot seem to find any place to input my information for my specific router. Although I can connect to neighboring wifi routers just fine.

  • Apple Bluetooth Keyboard + new MacBook Pro incompatible on wake from sleep

    Hello all
I've seen a few discussions on the web re this issue, but no resolutions.
I've been using a 4 year-old (white) Apple Bluetooth Keyboard for some time with my Intel Core 2 Duo MacBook Pro and never had an issue with it. Just upgraded to a new Core i5 Unibody MacBook Pro and I'm having problems.
Everything's fine on startup but as soon as my MBP goes to sleep and I wake it back up, I get repeating keystrokes (even though I'm not touching any keys) and the keyboard is unusable until I physically turn it off and then on again.
Just to preempt the responses I've seen to this issue elsewhere: (1) the keyboard's batteries are good, (2) the keyboard still operates perfectly if I associate it with the old MBP, but as soon as I associate it back to the new one the issues are still there, (3) there is nothing causing radio interference around my desk (and as I said it works fine with the older mac).
Does anyone know of any bluetooth issues on new MacBook Pros that could cause this?.
Many thanks in advance to anyone who can help with this issue.
    Darren

It's not a solution more an observation, but the newer bluetooth (aluminium) keyboards and magic trackpads do not exhibit this behaviour (so it looks like it's specific to that older keyboard for some reason)
