New MacMini Server

I've just taken delivery of a new MacMini Server - which has proved to be a trifle difficult in understanding.  Firstl I have two drives - one is labeled Macintosh HD2 and the other Macintosh Server - although I cannot see it at the moment.
Starting up from new wasn't as straightforward as I thought and with a usb Mac Time-Capsule ready to load, it didn't exactly do what it should have.
I eventually got it to load from the Time Capsule onto Macintosh HD2 so all file former files from the MacBookPro have loded accordingly into the HD2 drive.   So now I have the dock showing some of my applications except for the Macintosh HD logo that I am familiar with and resident on my desktop.   The question is how can I get this HD icon to appear on the desktop?
I actually don't require the server aspect at the moment, but I might in due course.
Another puzzle is that in my User Folder, the next level shows many of my secondary folders but several of them, such as Dropbox, Music, My Images, pictures, Public etc  have a red (no entry) circle and clicking on them says I don't have permissions to enter the folder.
I would welcome some input please as I fear that the setup hasn't gone exactly as I would have hoped.
Thank you

Thank you Dave. One assumes therefore that if I've installed all my programmes on the wrong drive, I should theoretically be able to move them over to the Server HD.
I really don't know about this and Apple don't give any specific instructions as to the contrary.

  • Can I input MacMini server thunderbolt video into IMac minidvi port?

I have a new MacMini server with Thunderbolt video output, and a mid 2010 27" IMac with minidvi external video input.
I have used the IMac as a monitor for my Mac Pro with good results for over a year.
My understanding from the Apple web site is that Thunderbolt video will drive a current model 27" LED Cinema display with minidvi input, so long as the monitor is the last item in the thunderbolt chain.
I have been unable to get the thunderbolt video from my Mac Mini to drive the minidvi external video input on my IMac.
Am I doing something wrong?  The monitor is the last (and only) item from the thunderbolt output on the MacMini server.
I continue to struggle with the disparate apple video standards, but need the ability to occasionally use the IMac in its external monitor mode, as opposed to remoting in to the MacMini server across the network.
    Any help appreciated.

    My Bad...
MiniDisplayPort is required, and this is what I have.
I believe that I finally solved the problem after getting through to a tier 2 Apple tech.
It does work, but there are several caveats:
    1.  Both machines are required to be on before connecting them.
    2.  This mode will support Windows 7 in boot camp, but you are required to connect the two devices in OSX, be certain the video is displayed on the monitor which is in Target Display mode, and then reboot the source machine to boot camp.
    3.  The MiniDisplayPort is the required cable, even though the source machine might use thunderbolt.
    Thanks....

  • MacMini server used as regular computer ?

I love the specs on the new MacMini server, and want to buy one. I see it comes with server software, and I know absolutely nothing about the Lion server software. I want to use this MacMini as a regular computer - I want to use it's first hard drive for Mac OSX, and the second hard drive to put Windows 7 on (running on bootcamp, directed from the first hard drive). However I know nothing of Lion server software. Can I disable the server part of Lion server, and use it as a regular computer, or do I have to wipe the server software off and put regular Lion or snow leopard OSX on it ? Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks

When you first start up the Mini Server, simply do not
enable any of the server services.  And if you do by
accident do that, you can simply open the Server App
    and disable it from there.
BTW, it does make a pretty nice workstation.  Using one
myself with a Thunderbolt display.  Also, if you decide to
get one, upgrade it to 8 gig right away.   I put the following
in mine and works just fine and is currently only $40.99.

  • No Entry Sign when trying to netboot new MacMini to Mountain Lion Server

My company just purchased a new MacMini i5 2.5 GHz and I am trying to netboot it to my Mountain Lion Server 10.8.2 but I am getting the No Entry sign when it tries to boot to the server.  I tested my other Mac computers that are in my environment and they are able to netboot to the server fine.  It just seems to be an issue with this latest Mac Mini.
As part of my troubleshooting, I created a new netrestore image from the new Mac Mini using System Image Utility on the Mountain Lion Server.  The server successfully created it and I set it as the new default image in the NetBoot server.  After taking these steps, I am still getting a No Entry sign.
I checked the log on the server to see what is happening when it tries to boot and this is what is displays:

    I'm seeing the same behavior with a new Late 2012 Macmini6,2 (2.3GHz quadcore i7).
I have a lab with several variants of minis up through the last generation.  One of those minis is a NetBoot/DeployStudio server.  I have it hosting a 10.8.2 NetBoot image, which works for all of the other lab minis but this new one.
I have tried 3 different methods for NetBoot:
Holding the 'N' key at boot
Holding option and seeing my NetBoot disk in the selectable options
Booting into the restore partition and selecting my NetBook disk from the Startup Disk preference pane
All 3 options result in what is described above - the Ghostbusters (minus the ghost) no entry sign.  My particular mini then shuts itself down shortly thereafter.
My NetBoot server log looks similar to the above, where my BSD INFORM messages have sysid=Macmini6,2.
I have confirmed that - on the restore partition at least - the shipping OS on the new mini 6,2 is 10.8.1.  It's likely a custom edition for this new hardware.  It's possible that a component of a 10.8.3 update would fix it, but I'm unfortunately leaning toward this being an EFI firmware issue.  I've noted on another site that these minis seem to have issues with VMware's ESXi, where the suggested course of action will be an Apple firmware update: http://communities.vmware.com/thread/423099
As the lab is hoping to purchase 40 of these systems, NetBoot support is rather critical.

  • I have inherited an ICloud account from one of my employers when transferring from old MacBook Pro to new MacMini and need to separate from this, presumably by setting up a new ICloud account.  How do I do this ?

I have inherited an ICloud account from one of my employers when transferring from old MacBook Pro (which belonged to them) to new MacMini and need to separate from this, presumably by setting up a new ICloud account.  How do I do this ?  And is there any danger, in doing so, that I might delete any of her ICloud information ?

Sign out in System Preferences>iCloud. This will remove any synced data such as Calendars, emails and Contacts from your Mac, but will have no effect on the data on the server - so that other devices logged into it will continue to see the data.

How do I setup permission to transfer files to the MacMini Server. I thought I had it setup to do such but apparently not as I get an error message that I don't have permission?

Both the Mac and Windows units we are usinghave connectivity to the MacMiniServer (on the same network) to open and edit files but cannot transfer new files to the MacMini. FileSharing is on. I went to File Sharing on the MacMini and added the appropriate users and checked FileSharing. Is there something else I needed to do?

  • MacMini Server as 40 users fileserver

We have to create a new network and, instead to use Windows system, I'm suggesting to have Mac solution.
I will have a network with 40 users (the idea is 40 MacMini), mostly working with office sw.
The server will have only these duties:
    - it will be the file server for the 40 users
    - it will manage the users name and password (like a windows domain) to limit the users
I was thinking about this configuration:
2x MacMini Server (cloned configuration, to prevent any system stop) with a Pegasus RAID (thunderbolt) system for the storage.
It will be able the macmini to manage it or I need more power?
    Any suggestion will be appreciated!!
    Thanks.
    M.P.

    Hi Marckus,
You could do a backup via VPN with something like Carbon Copy Cloner.. You'd just need to make sure your backup volume was mounted at either end and you should schedule them to run at differing times. Backup over VPN will depend on how much data your backing up and the speed of your internet connection at both sites. You don't want to have slowdown when your users are in.
Mac Mini - as you'll be sharing your data on the Pegasus it wont make that much difference. With the server having 2 HD's and mirroring them is a good form of redundancy and a bit cheaper than the SSD. The SSD will boot much faster..
    Hope that helps

  • Macmini Server for Mentoring program

I am in the development stages of setting up a mentoring program. I have been looking at the macmini server as an option but have a some questions in regards of ease of use versus a linux setup.
I will be using apple computers along with ipad for my coordinators.
I see that I can host a web site, but will it be able to host a vbulletin forum as well?
I am pretty proficient when it comes to software, but have not really messed around with linux much. tried ubuntu and liked it but it seems odd coming from mac osx and windows. How user friendly is SL server edition campared to Ubuntu server in regards to setup, maintaining and management. I do not have the budget to have an IT person on staff.
The server will primary be used to host website, forum, and file sharing. I like the integration of ical and the mail server. Any advise and suggestions appreciated.

I've never setup a Ubuntu server but a Mac mini server is very simple, use your 90 days of free phone support as much as you can. Or see what that new Joint Venture thing is that they launched the other day.
The Web Server is good and the Mail and iCal integration I can't remember if a Forum comes as one of the easy setup site options so thats a bit more work under the hood.
The Applecare gives you phone support for a very good price cant see you getting an option like that on Linux, both have good online forums for assistance as well.
The applecare doesn't cover command line though just GUI which probably means a vbulletin install would not be covered it you ran into trouble (so online forums for that one).
For the price and its abilities IMO you'd be mad not to go with the Mini, especially with other macs and ipads.

  • 1 10.6 MacMini Server + 78 10.5 XServe G5s

    Hello
I have 78 Dual 2.0GHZ G5 Xserves which will be running OS X Server 10.5.7
    I have a 6TB XServe RAID
I also have a brand new Apple MacMini Server (Intel) running OS X Server 10.6.x
I am hoping to take content produced in Final Cut Studio 3 (running on Intel MacBook Pros / Mac Pros) and be able to utilise the suite of older XServes as QMaster nodes. I have read there can be issues mixing intel and ppc units, but was hoping that the MacMini Server could be the controller which then segments jobs between the G5s.
Ideally, I would love for one of the XServe G5 units to be able to be the QMaster Controller.
Any advice or caveats of this approach would be greatly appreciated!

And With ben's comment... Versions of Quicktime, Versions of Compressor, and Versions of Qmaster, must all be the same... And on that note I don't believe the latests support PPC (G5) ...
Best of my knowledge, using the G5's for encoding isn't an option if you're trying to go latest versions of things.

  • Installing Mavericks on new MacMini

Hey I just received my new MacMini and want to install Mavericks because Yosemite won't let me use the Final Cut Server work around that I use. But when I want to install Mavericks I keep getting a message that it can't be installed on my system. In the system requirements it just says "
Mac mini (Early 2009 or later)". Has anyone also had this problem? Thanks Lilian

Mavericks is too old to run on that Mac, except inside a product such as VirtualBox, Parallels Desktop, or VMware Fusion.

  • Older ATV remote + New MacMini compatibility?

Quick and probably easy question, but searching did not yield an answer here...
I'm trying to use the remote from my old first-gen AppleTV (remote model A1156) to control media (i.e. iTunes and Plex) on my new MacMini (latest Server model). Playback controls don't work and pair/Unpair actions don't seem to do anything - is there a fundamental incompatibility there or am I missing something?
    Thanks!

Check the security settings in the System Preferences and make sure the IR receiver is enabled. Otherwise, the older remote should work.

  • How do I reinstall on MacMini server?

I've had an awful experience going from snow leopard server to lion server using the migration instructions and assistant.  So I am starting fresh again on a new Mac Mini server I've only had for a week.
How do I reinstall Lion Server on the MacMini server when it came with Lion server and it's not in my app store?
I noticed that COMMAND + R gives me the internet recovery, but no the built in recovery. Why is that?
After agreeing to run the Lion installer through the internet recovery, I am told that features such as FileVault and Recovery mode aren't supported on my System disk (which is a mirrored set from the installed 500 GB drives) and these features will not be available because I am installing Lion (client) on the drive (which is necessary first before installing Server.app). No Recovery mode.  What does this mean and why not.
Doesn't it seem that if you buy a MacMini Server that the installed OS and Server ap would be placed in my app store account for emergencies?
I need a non-online way to recover this serve should it fail or I need to start fresh again.  I already had a Lion USB recovery disk that I made which worked for my Mac Pro, but not my Mini Server.  When I tried to boot frmo it, I just got a grey circle crossed out.
Anyd advice would be much appreciated
This all started because the migration didn't make my mini server an open directory master like the snow leopard server was.  I decided to start over and do i manually.
    MacMini Server 2011

Reboot with Command + R. That will start your mini from the recovery partition. Once in recovery mode, use disk utility to erase your disk.
Now repartition it with 1 partition. Call it "Mini HD" or whatever you like. Format as Mac OS X Extended (Journaled). Click the 'Options' button, GUID Partition Table should be the default. Choose it if it's not. Now click Partition. Boom, you have a properly formated HD ready for a fresh installation of Lion.
Next, quit Disk Utility and choose the option to reinstall Mac OS X. It will download from Apple servers and when it's done you can do a clean install.

At the current time we have one Domino v7.0.4 server (Win2k with DUC v1.2.3) in production and our clients are running Notes v7.0.4 client with DUC v.1.2.3 installed on them. This setup has been working great in our Unity v5.0(1) environment. We are looking to migrate our users to a newly installed Domino v8.5.1 (Win 2008 x32 DUC v1.2.5) server in the near future but out test users are running into a problem.
When a user gets migrated over to our new Domino server the client can no longer access their voicemail via TUI.  During the user migration process we do change the pointer in Unity to their mail file on the new Domino server. When the user logs in they receive "Your messages are available now"
If we migrate the user back to the old v7.0.4 server they can access their voice mail with no issues.
Any feedback you could provide would be great. Thanks!

    Hi Kenneth,
Could you clarify what you mean by "During the user migration process we do change the pointer in Unity to their mail file on the new Domino server"? Typically when moving a user's mail file to a new Domino server, Unity should automatically pick up those changes. Are you pehaps creating a new mail file and pointing Domino to it instead of moving it? If that is the case, the new mail file would not have been DUCS enabled, a process it must go through before Unity will be able to access it properly. The only way to force that to happen would be to reimport the user into Unity. If the mail file is properly migrated, however, the mail file should remain DUCS enabled and there would be no need for this.
An easy way to determine whether the user is DUCS enabled is using the DUT tool. It is located on the Unity server under \Commserver\Utilities\Domino\DUT. It will show you a list of all of your users. Compare the values you see in the UCProfile section for a working / non-migrated user to a failing one. You might also want to verify that it lists the updated mail server and mail file for the user.
Also, while I don't think it would cause this particular problem, you should be aware that Server 2008 is not currently a supported platform for DUCS/CsServer 1.2.5, see page 6 in the admin guide:

  • LDAP is not working on new Web Server

Hi, I configured LDAP authentication and it was working fine. After this I installed a new web server. I copied the security certificate etc ( copied everything from other web server) onto new webserver. When I try to login into Infoview or CMC then I get error message "Security plugin error: Failed to set parameters on plugin" from the new web server. Its working fine from the old web servers.
Not sure what else I have to do now as I have done the same thing on old servers in the past.
We are on BOXI R2 SP3 with web server on IIS 6.0. We have three web servers  and 3 processing servers ( with all services) in cluster env.
    Thanks,

I am sorry I got confused with Pure Enterise authentication. I should have referred to my notes. I apologize for this. Web application server is involved in communicating to LDAP. Below is the process
    1) User logs into the application
    2) Web application server security plugin sends credential to LDAP directory
    3) LDAP directory authenticate users.
    4) Web application server's security plugin sends users credential to LDAP
    5) CMS requests user and group info from LDAP
    6) The LDAP returns this information to CMS Security plugin
    7) CMS will grant access if users is member of mapped group
    8) If access is granted then both CMS and WAS plugin create a session
    9) The WAS sends an enterprise session token to user's browser
I was referring to login into Infoview using LDAP.
    Thanks,
