New Mega 865 Problems

Really need some help here, something is going horribly wrong.
Right heres the spec:
Brand new Mega 865 Deluxe version
a 512MB module of Geil PC3500 Golden Dragon Ram
P4 3Ghz Northwood 800FSB
Nvidia Geforce 4 Ti4600
Western Digital IDE 8MB Cache 160Gig Hard Drive: set to Master
Nec 8x DVD Double Layer Dual R/RW IDE BLACK Burner OEM: set to Master
I'm trying to install Windows XP Home onto it, I have two legit versions, one with SP1 and one with SP2 and neither of which are working correctly.
The version with only SP1 on it says the partition on the harddrive isn't XP compatible please delete and create a new one (so I do) when I do this I get same message over and over again, never ending cycyle.
The version with SP2 installs only to hard drive fine after a full NTFS format but it gets to the stage where it restarts your PC at the end of the installation where it stays in dos. What it should do is load up into the GUI final part of the installation, it doesn't get this far. Instead i get the message "Disk bot failure, insert system disk and press enter."
As for updating the bios, the whole process seemed really complecated when you can't get into windows to do it through MSI's utility and don't have a floppy disk drive because you have the deluxe version. Also I'm not even sure I can update the bios without windows even installed, I made an emulated boot cd with the dos flashing utility and new beta bios on but that isn't working either.
I have tried changing around jumper settings and bios settings including boot device prioritys etc but it's not getting me anywhere. I had heard good things about this shuttle and don't really want to have to return it but this forum is pretty much my last resort.
Any help apprechiated, thanks.

I guess rkoppen is right (although I've never dealt with XP home edit, and in my "vanilla" XP pro setup the card reader did not interfere)
On previous OS-es supporting NTFS there always was a chance to select additional 'stroage" devices where to install the system into.
Other thought - when setup proposes to delete/reformat existing partitions, it usually shows the available size (at least that is/was so with NT4 and Win2k, and XP Pro) Is the indicated size anywhere in the neighborhood of the HDD capacity you have? (probably not, if you try to "reformat" an empty card reader )

  • HELP! My new Mega 865 Problem

Hi, It would be great if anyone can help me with this:
I am using MEGA 865 + P4 Prescott 3.2E + XP SP2. When I browse internet or browse my computer, the windows always close down. And I found some infomation in the XP Event viewer with event ID 1002. (The shell was stopped and then restarted. By default, the shell is explorer.exe).
    It seems like explorer.exe restarted.
    Thank you for your help!

    And sometimes the pc reboot
    aah, now you tell us
right-click on My Computer, then navigate through Properties > Advanced > System Startup & Recovery, Settings > System Failure, untick Automatically restart. now next time your PC "reboot", it will show the STOP screen instead (also Known as the BSOD - "Blue Screen Of Death")
post any error message it shows, any device driver failures, and any STOP error codes it displays
as for your P4 3.2 prescott, i have seen a couple of users with 3.2s, maybe if SilenTYL drops through he might be able to confirm, as he also is running a 3.2ghz, but maybe not a prescott
though if the CPU is detected at startup by BIOS correctly, then that may not be the issue, but the issue of overheating could be, or even bad memory...

  • Help! Mega 865 problems

Hi, maybe someone here can help me with a problem that's developed on my Mega 865 with P4 3.0Ghz (Northwood).
Everything was working fine up until a couple days ago.
I had WinXP pro installed and it was okay except for a minor (but weird) problem. I would try to shut off the computer but it would never completely shutdown. It would shut down then immeduately restart. It wasn't a problem since the computer was on most of the time anyway.
The bigger problem comes after installing the utilities on the Mega 865 drivers disk (Mega theater, pc-alert, etc). The entire computer started to slow down, so I restarted the computer and it powers up again, but all I get is one long beep. Nothing else. Nothing on screen, just a beep that goes on until I hold the power button to shut it off again.
    Any ideas? TIA

Thanks for the advice. I agree with you, everything seemed to be working fine until I decided to install the PC-Alert and MSI theater from the install disk (DUMB IDEA!!!!!). My problem now though is that I can't even get my computer to boot to uninstall the programs or ever reformat and reinstall Windows :(
Anyway ideas? Is there a jumber for resetting the bios? I'm trying to get a new P4 chip or another motherboard to see if the Mega 865 + PC-Alert combination fried my chip, after that I can only think of getting an RMA as a solution.

  • MEGA 865 Problems with XP install....HELP!!

Hi guys, i just bought a MEGA 865 Deluxe and I can't install Windows XP (Sp1)...i have reached the point where i am seriously considering throwing it out of the window (after 4 hours of troubleshooting!!!).
    Specs are: P4 3.0
    Crucial 1gb DDR400
    Maxtor DiamondPlus 9 SATA 160Gb
    Sony DW-G120A Dvd-rw
    Bios v1.3
Ok what happens is that during startup it will identify both HD and DVD...it will start reading the Windows CD, but then stop and try to boot from other sources. The DVD-rw works fine in Hi-Fi mode. I tried using another old CD-ROM i have with no luck. I took out the Maxtor and used my IDE seagate from my other PC...again nothing (btw the XP CD works...tried it in another pc). I have toyed around with all possible combinations in the BIOS...manually resetted to defaults...tried all different combinations for the DVD settings (SL,MA etc)...even moved the DVD to the Primary IDE cable...and still nothing. Searched in this forum, and tried some tips...like Disabling USBs, Changing the SATA to Legacy and so on...and still...guessed right... NOTHING!!
I am pretty desperate for some advice. Any tips to try are welcome, before i start sending stuff back for refund.
    Thanks in advance!

Yeap...i guess you were right kane81. The CD wasn't bootable...since then i obtained a newer XP version that is bootable but guess what my luck had in store. I fired up the pc as usual, and i got a message on the monitor 'no signal'...?? Tried with another monitor...played with the cable in case it wasnt put in good. Nothing. black screen. It seems like the hard disc is working, but i get nothing on the screen. Also in order to turn it off, it doesn't respond anymore to the 'PC' button....need to pull off the plug. It's like the BIOS has been erased or something. Any ideas? Faulty M/board? Should i send it back and get replacement?
From all machines i ever had, the 865 is the best looking one. I am dissapointed all i could do since i bought it is listening to radio

  • MEGA 865 Big Display problem

    Hi,
i get my new MEGA 865 last Week, but i have a big Problem with it, every time i unplug and plug the Power Cable, the Display on the front is off.
The only way to bring the Display back to live is to unplug and plug the Display Cable inside the Barebone from the mainboard. This cant be right, does everyone have the same Problem ??????
Please write, if you have the same problem or not.
    Thanks

The information came from MSI Tech support.
I also cannot believe that they sell a Multimedia PC with the MSI Media Suite package that just doesn't work. Any updates? No. Nothing. The MSI Media Suite is meant to be one of the reasons for it costing more than the other MEGA's.
Generally as a rule, I hardly ever install anything from the manufacturers CD supplied with a system. Half the time they are just rubbish apps/utils that I hardly use. I don't really care what speed my Processor/FSB is running at - it's running and it is not below its spec, that's fine by me. My first stop is always the web site for the most current drivers and utils that are necessary.
Obviously PC Alert4 is proving the exception here. It seems to me (I have no confirmation) that PC Alert as supplied on the CD, has API's / DLL's added to take care of the LCD display, and these have not been checked/thought of in a subsequent "standard" version.
I am also interested in seeing how I could control / program the LCD display. I seem to remember someone saying that WinXP Media Center can also change the LCD Display, this hints at either a special driver or an API in XP to get to its settings. I'll try dig a little deeper when I have a spare moment unless anyone already knows the answer.

  • Building mega 865 pro pc...

    hey..
i've just bought my brand new mega 865 pro and havn't got a clue what to put inside it..
i think i'll go for the pentium 4 3.0ghz.. but after that, i'm not sure what is compatible with it..
need 512mb ram.. basic stuff (what's compatible??)
don't need a gfx card or sound card..
would need about a 200gig hd.. (should i get SATA?.. what's the difference?)
my biggest worry is the dvd-rw and tv card as i heard many are not compatible...
i would like a basic tv card that can take advantage of all of the built in msi features.. can anybody recommend one?
    thanks,
    all help appreciated,
    scrappy.

you can't use high density ram in the 865 PRO - it wont boot.
SATA is the way of the future, might as well go for it. the only real difference at this stage is that the SATA cable is smaller, thinner and better for air flow. (I removed my extra IDE cable as I'm using SATA)
You shouldnt have any problems with DVD-RW.
As for the TV card, go digital. forget the MSI TV card that works with the 865  it only does analog. Forget about instant on too. its crap, just use hibernate or S3 standby, it will turn your pc on just as fast.

  • Mega 865 probs with 3.3v ...

uhm well ive got a brand new mega 865 and i thought kewl :P i mean it looks sweet and i like the hifi stuff etc etc
well so i started it up and the first day was fine.. second day it suddenly shutdown and stuff.. wel after taking out the power cable and leaving the pc for a while, it worked again and when i looked @ pcalert4 it said that my 3.3v was getting up to 3.9v etc.. and thats the reason why it was crashing..
now my question is obviously how do i stop ik crashing..
    - is it because the power supply is 2 weak? (i dont think so seeing that msi delivers the power supply with the mega barebone)
    - is it the psu ? coz i read about some1 having the same problem with the 3.3v and a mega barebone...
    anyway my pc specs are:
    p4 3.2ghz
    2x 512ddr corsair
    6800 LE
    winxp sp1
thats the most important i think

If your system is hanging while you are running, turn off PC Alert.
     PC Alert Abuse:stop:
In fact, disable PC Alert so it dosen't launch when your system boots.  It causes a momentary pause while it is refreshing the system information.  It's fairly noticable, especially if you are gaming, or writing a document.

  • Mega 865 No Boot!

Brand new Mega 865, BIOS 1.1, SATA HDD, 1GB RAM, booted fine, installed Win XP Pro, tried to update the bios, it wouldn't work. It kept saying that it couldn't verify the image or veryify the file or something (sorry...a bit vague I know).
So I quit out of that process (Latest version of Live Upadate) and tried to restart the machine to see if anything in the BIOS was causing it to fail (write protect or anything).
When I boot now, I don't get anything on the screen and I get a series of beeps.
First of all I get a long beep followed by two short beeps in sucession.
Then there is a break of about ten seconds and there are two beeps back to back in a much lower tone.
Nothing I press seems to do anything, and I've tried resetting the CMOS on the mother board.
    Any help would be apprecaited.
    Thanks
    Warren

I suppose there have been enough accounts about dead mobos due to Live Update failures, for MSI to take a notice of that...
On my other "big" system (which has Gigabyte mobo) there is some sort of "dual BIOS" thing, meaning that system has a chance to recover if the "live update" goes wrong...

  • Restart Problem Fix for Mega 865

Just letting people know how I fixed my Mega 865 restart problems
    my quick story
I built my 865 with 512RAM and installed XP MCE2005. The next day I installed a 1 GIG RAM chip and the system would not boot into XP. It would get to the windows boot screen and crash when loading the hard drive drivers.... or somewhere around there. couldnt even get into safe mode. I removed the Radeon 9800 and it booted. oh no could it be the AGP Card?
well I put it back in and tried every thing,
removed the new 1 GIG RAM, same problem
    reset BIOS
    reset to Safe Settings BIOS
    reset to Optimal BIOS
repair XP recovery console, fix MBR ...etc
then I the BIOS I tried dropping the AGP Aperature size from 64MB down to 8MB. It fixed the problem.
I'm guessing the issue is really one of power. the PSU is only 230w and with the extra ram stick, it had problems putting out enough power.
so I dropped the agp aperature down to 8MB (shouldnt matter as the card has 128MB and hopefully shouldnt need system RAM)
I also turned off the serial port (set it to disabled - who uses the serial port anyway)
and disabled the modem and network card (dont need the modem and I'm using the wireless card instead of the ethernet one)
hopefully turn these things off will prevent furthur power issues when running games and stuff.

the prescott core P4s are hot enough as it is, without squeezing a 3.2ghz in there, along with a hot GPU
i would recommend the northwood core P4, as they run cooler and are just as good as prescott P4s as tests have shown
and i would also advise you to search through this forum for topics about mega 180 heat issues; the issues will apply to all mega series, just seems to cause more of a problem with the 180, but most ideas will apply to 865
first thing to check is airflow, make sure that there are no cable looms in front of heatsink, obstructing airflow to the fan. bear in mind too that by default, the fan is already blowing hot air off the AGP card onto the heatsink (yes, poor design by MSI but it can be resolved apparently by "reversing" fan airflow).

  • Mega 865 wireless network problem.

    Hi all,
New here and seeking a solution to a specific prob.
Have built a system from with a MSI Mega 865 Delux. P4 Chip, ATI all in wonder graphics/TV card, Maxstor 160 GB hDD.
System is specifically as a home entertainment/ video capture and record.
    Problem with wireless networking.
I have a wireless network with three PCs all with USR wireless cards and a usr 8054 router which actually does little but extend the rance of the network, Internet connection is through host computer on a single channel ISDN line.
When I connect to the network with my Mega 865 (XP TO XP) the connection is massivly slow, in fact pages on the net refuse to load it is that slow.
The 865 is causing the host compiter to drop its connection to the router for about 50 % of the time, I can see its icon flashing red as the connection is dropped and returning to green as it reconnects.
It sounds like an incompatibility issue some where but I can't find anyone else with the same problems.
    Any ideas anyone?
    Thanks, Epirb.

To my knowledge, the SP2 caused trouble for Mega 865 if a certain type of P4 CPU was installed (Prescott?)
That was so because this sort of CPU requires some "alternative" microcode to be loaded into it upon startup.
One published workaround was to replace certain file in the SP2 package with its predecessor from SP1,
another (more solid, IMHO) - to upgrade the BIOS of PC so this revised microcode is loaded with BIOS. At this point in time, I believe, the revised Mega 865 BIOS is available as an official release.
You are right, the issue is only with certain processors; see also (this includes the m-soft workaround too)
    http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;885626
This revised bios is not available IMHO, one of our forum collegues managed to get a beta version of a new bios, which does the trick. If you need it give us a shout.

  • MEGA 865 CD playback problem (in HiFi mode)

    Hi, fellow MEGA PC owners
I have a problem with playing my CDs on MEGA 865 in HiFi mode. It recognizes the CD, plays the first track or two, then stops playing, displays SEARCHING message for a ten seconds or so and then switches to NODISC. When I press Eject button on the box or remote, it switches back to SEARCHING and shows the number of tracks on CD.
The same problem is with the MP3 playback. It plays several MP3s ok and then switches to SEARCHING and NODISC.
Does anyone else has this problem? Any idea on what could be wrong? I checked all Slave/Master jumpers, all are ok, the cd drive is recognized by the BIOS.
    My configuration is:
MSI MEGA 865, P4 3.0 GHz Northwood, 1 Gb PC3200 RAM, NEC 2500A DVD burner.

    Hey JavaDuke!
I've got the exact same problem with my Mega180, also running a NEC 2500A! And it is starting to get very annoying...
I can play cd's for hours without any problems, when suddenly it stops in the middle of a track, displaying the NODISC message. Doesn't matter whether I use original cd's or copied ones, and the same disc can play through perfectly one day and halt several times the next. I've been thinking about replacing the NEC 2500 with something else but haven't got round to it as yet, however the post in the thread mentioned above states that different drives still produced the same error, so it's probably the bluebird chip that is faulty.
The mentioned thread doesn't really focus on our problem though as it mostly evolves around boot problems, so I don't see any problem with starting a new thread dedicated to this problem.
I might try the newer firmware, although there is no official word from MSI that this problem even exists, and I therefore doubt that it is solved. Not many people seem to have this particular problem either, or it appears so seldom that they choose to ignore it (as I have done for some time now).
Please report back if you solve this one!

seems that the card reader wouldn't read SD cards, but was ok with MMC. i have replaced her combo drive with another Mitsumi one, and now both SD and MMC cards work fine. gonna try the faulty combo drive in my computer later, but i suspect it is a faulty card reader
EDIT: looks like i jumped the gun a bit - mum says the new drive is now doing the same thing  trying her old one in this computer and so far all looks ok.
BTW her XC Cube is the EY65, which - like the Mega 865 - uses the Intel 865g chipset
does anyone have any suggestions for us? it cannot be a conflict between the OEI-USB card reader devices and the intel 865g chipset, otherwise every mega user would have seen this....

  • Mega 865 XP Pro install problems.

I just recently put together my 865 with a P4 3.0Ghz, 512mb 400mhz Samsung DDR Ram, WD 160Gb HDD, and Sony DWU-18A 8X DVD+/-RW drive. I had some problems with the machine recognising the hard drive to install XP, but this was fixed by detaching the card-readers. I was capable of installing XP to a partition on the hard-drive, however when it goes into the second phase of the installation where it needs to reboot, if the CD stays in the computer during restarting it will just start the XP setup process from the beginning. If the CD is ejected before restart, i get an error message that i need to "INSERT BOOTABLE DISK" making me assume that the MEGA 865 isn't booting from my hard-drive. Even though XP installed to the drive, the drive still wont get recognized by the CMos setup in the Bios...i've tried swapping cables and IDE channels with the DVD drive which gets recognised wherever it is attached. I've also tried using another Western Digital 80gb HDD, but the Bios will not recognise it either. Both drives used were used as data drives on other machines, and have been formatted and tested to be working fine. Can anyone help me get my 865 to boot from the data already written to the 160Gb HDD during the initial XP setup phase?

Well, I'm not sure why the machine couldn't recognize the hard drive without the card readers attached.  That's some mighty strange behaviour there my friend.
Is the HardDrive an SATA or an IDE?
And, if the HD is an IDE, are you sure you connected the hard drive to the hard drive cable, and not the CD cable?
