New network interfaces appear / networking fails

Hi
I have a strange behaviour of my ethernet networking interface. Every time I restart the mac the network connection is lost (I usally keep it in sleep and have no problems for days and weeks).
As soon as I enter the network setup I get the message that a new network connection has been found, called "Ethernet (integrated) 1 (or 2, 7, 8 number increases)"
If I look at my network configuration I see a long list of "Ethernet interface ((null))" and in beetween some "Ethernet (integrated) 1)" and the like
It usally takes a couple of restarts of the network preferences and then the interface appears in the "network status" view and the mac connects to the router.
I don't have any external networking cards and the like, just the ibook and a standard router. The router also connects to our mac mini without any problems I it ran for at least half a year with the ibook before this occured.
I would be very thankfull for any help since this is very annoying.
BTW I don't move the computer around and it is connected with a network cable.
Cheers
Peter

1st step, get Applejack...
http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/19596
After installing, reboot holding down CMD+s, then when the prompt shows, type in...
applejack AUTO
Then let it do all 5 of it's things.
At least it'll eliminate some questions if it doesn't fix it.
2nd step, trash, (or drag to the desktop), these files...

/Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/preferences.plist
/Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/NetworkInterfaces.plist

  • Thunderbolt to Firewire Adapter & New Network Interface Message

I am using the new Thunderbolt to Firewire Adapter. Why is it that every time I use it, I get the following message:
"A new network interface has been detected. The Thunderbolt FireWire Slot 2 network interface has not been set up. To set up this interface, use network preferences."
All I want to do is mount external hard drives that don't have Thunderbolt ports to my iMac, via Thunderbolt because I am using the iMac's single Firewire port for something else. The drives do successfully mount, but why do I keep getting this message whenever I connect them again?

I have no doubt what you say to do would get rid of the message for me. However, both myself and an Apple Store employee think it is odd that the message comes up in the first place. We're both curious about it, and he's going to look into it.
We tested it on a computer at the store, and found that it happens on Lion too.

  • UML290 & Mac: A new network interface has been detected

I have a MacBook Pro running Snow Leopard, and I just purchased a Pantech UML290 4G modem, live in an area with good 4G coverage, and I get a good 4G signal.  I am running VZAccess Manager version 7.2.5, and in general it connects to the 4G network fine and stays connected.  Every time I connect the modem to my laptop, Mac OS generates a "A new network interface has been detected" pop up with the option to Cancel or go to Network Preferences.  Canceling makes it go away.
I also see 4 devices under System Preferences > Network:
    1. Verizon UM290 (which shows connected, not sure why it's missing the L in UML)
    2. Pantech UML290 USB Modem
    3. Pantech UML290 USB Serial
    4. Pantech UML290 USB CM
Does anyone know how to get rid of the annoying message every time I connect the modem? Thanks.

I have the same set up.  Get the same messages almost everytime I start up the UML290.  Not sure why I occasionally don't get it.  Many others on the forum have reported this as well.  For now, we live with it.

I thought the same too, looks like its not just me having this issue, hope Apple do something soon. Thanks for your help

  • "New network interfaces have been detetcted"

    Hi all.
New to Macs, so bare with me.
I've had my MPB a few days, and all good. My mobile broadband dongle works fine, but when I plug the dongle in, I get the following message.
    http://www.edludlow.co.uk/network-set-up.jpg
As I said, it works fine, but the message is annoying - any idea if there's a likely easy fix?
    Thanks,
    Ed Ludlow

    Hi There,
You will unfortunately receive that message if you plug the dongle in while OS X is already running. this is due to the fact that when the OS is started it does not see the network protocol and so when you plug the dongle in it just sees a new network connection. It's normal for OS X to do this.
    Good Luck

  • Please help...Always detect new network port and......

Hi, can anyone help me...everytime i start up my imac, i need to open up system preferences "network" and it always show : "A new network port has been detected:
    Built-in Ethernet 1
Please verify that it is configured correctly, then press Apply Now to activate it.
And then i will have to click appply now on this "built in ethernet1" so that i can access to internet. After that even i can go internet already, when i open up system preferences "network", the same message(as above) appears.

Have you run any maintenance routines to check for software issues?
Have you changed your network hardware,i.e. DSL interface or router recently?

  • L2L VPN issues with new network

I've added a new network for a customer's firewall and I'm trying to get that network across the existing VPN tunnel to their DR site. The new network is 10.133.133.0/24 and I'm trying to get it to connect to 10.1.14.0/24 on the other side of the tunnel.
I'm missing something, though, because when I do a packet-tracer to simulate traffic, it dies before getting encrypted. The output is below.
What am I missing to get this traffic to even attempt to go across the tunnel?

  • One America News Network

Today I was going through Verizon's new GUI schedule to see what channels had mysteriously appeared to replace others that had just as mysteriously disappeared, and stumbled upon another new one, One America, a channel ensconced within the news section.
I sat through a few straightforward headline news segments of One America, but then during the commercial breaks, I was appalled to witness obviously propagandistic libertarian messages in the form of historic speeches. These were accompanied by insidious visuals to further push the message in the direction the programmers intended. There was a speech by Theodore Roosevelt (which actually turns out to be transcribed from a popular email that was circulated in the last decade, but was based on the actual speeches and a letter Roosevelt produced). Here's the segment:
"There can be no divided allegiance here. Any man who says he is an American, but something else also, isn't an American at all. We have room for but one flag, the American flag... We have room for but one language here, and that is the English language... and we have room for but one sole loyalty and that is a loyalty to the American people."
The first thing that came to my mind was North Korea. I envisioned goose-stepping minions with their right hands on the shoulders of the ones marching next to them. Unity and uniformity uber alles.
Another between-the-segments interstitial was in the form of Bill Clinton giving a speech on "welfare reform," which was given in 1996 after it became clear he was turning into a Republican. That segment of his speech was accompanied by visuals of urban blight and dilapidated school rooms. It had libertarian worldview written all over it.
To further investigate, I checked OANN's Facebook page where I saw one satisfied viewer's opinion on those commercial break "messages":
"The accurate history lessons during the breaks are a wonderful public service. Its a reminder to the younger generation of what their responsibilities are to protect liberty and freedom."
Right wing people are constantly saying that liberals have all the other media at their disposal, "why can't we have just one or two?" Even OANN CEO Robert Herring, Sr. says this, which goes to show ignorance runs through all economic classes. It's wrong, of course, because all the other lower tier news programming on Verizon is owned by multinational corporations--newsflash, they all have a corporate slant and a corporate worldview, hardly amenable to liberalism. For instance, we call CNN the Corporate News Network. MSNBC has liberal programming but only during the week in prime-time. They have liberal programming because it just happens to make money for the corporation that owns it. And you'll never hear a thing about media consolidation or net neutrality on MSNBC, because it's owned by NBCUniversal, a subsidiary of Comcast. Not exactly a liberal world view.
I'm still waiting for Verizon to bring Free Speech TV to the lower tier. I have a feeling I'll be waiting a very long time for that to happen.

...Or cancel your service if your political agenda is so important.

  • BUG: Access Connect Abort, when I create a new network profile.

    Where can I report bugs?
My system is windows xp sp2 on X60.
I have been using AC-4.42(Access Connection) for a long time. And before,  there is no problem when I added new network profile into it.
But yesterday, I wanted to add a new profile into it. I opened the "create profile" window and input the name of the new profile (I have two network adapters, wired and wireless. So by default, the both are selected. And I left the default selection unchanged.), then "Next". The 2nd window is about wireless config, I configured everything, then go on "Next", at this moment, an error occured and AC aborted with four error windows. The titles of those windows are "ACMainGUI.exe error" and "ACMainGUIWnd: ACMainGUI.exe".
Then I did it again, I opened the "create profile" window, and this time, in this (1st) window, I changed the selection of network adapter, besides inputing the name of the new profile. I only selected the wired adapter, and then "Next". Sadly, this time the 2nd(next) window did not appear(pop up) at all. Instead, those four error windows poped up one by one.  AC aborted again.
I repeated the above operations many times, and everytime, AC aborted.
So I went to the online "support and download" to look for some updates about AC. And I found AC-4.52 with luck. After downloading and installing, unfortunately the problem still exists. AC-4.52 still aborts when I create a new network profile.
So now, what to do. I have no ways. I am expecting the developers could note this problem and fix it and give me a newer update as soon as possible.
    Sigh...

I have exactly the same issue. Next to the actions mentioned by ixbm I have also fully uninstalled and reinstalled the AC-4.52, but this didn't help.
Any idea on how to solve, installing older version?
    regards,
    Bart

  • Physically moving CW2000 Server to a new Network

Recently I've installed a CW2000 LMS Server in my Test environment. After successful operation I moved this Box to a new Network and changed the SNMP Communities on the Server. After that ANI Server gives me an error.
I can't syncronize RME with the ANI Server, because the ANI Server is not running.
When I have a look at the Service the following appeares:
"ANIServer is running - but busy flag is set"
I din't found usefull Informations on the Web.
    Does anybody have an idea?
    Thanks for a Hint

CW2000 requires a static ip address. Since you moved the box to a new network, the ip address is chnaged now (so could be the hostname). In this case, you can either:
    1) Re-install CW2K on the new network server or
    2) Update the necessary files with the new info as in the tech tips:
    http://www.cisco.com/warp/public/477/RME/sol_hostname.html

  • Network fails after upgrade

hey guys, i just installed Arch Linux, and the first thing i did waas update the whole system via pacman -Syu.  (i installed arch using the BASE iso only, so only the base system was installed)  it downloaded all the updates for my system and installed them.  I then installed Xorg, then gnome, then the Nvidia modules and put it in my rc.conf modules section.
upon rebooting, it says "network   [FAILED]" resulting in no internet (on the bright side my Nvidia xorg worked out)
Trying a ifconfig eth0 down then back up results in it doing nothing. When looking at the output of ifconfig, eth0 does not show an ipaddress, however its jhardware address, so i fugre it is no accepting an IP address. I tried dhcpcd eth0 and again, it stalls for a bit then nothing.  I checked my Dmesg and nothing relevant appears after running those commands except it sayins Eth0 link changed 100Mbps or somthing along those lines.
Keep in mind, the internet worked fine, obviously, since i updated the whole system upon a fresh install.  I am stumped on what has happened!

If I had to take a guess, your /etc/rc.conf was overwritten and perhaps the necessary kernel module for your nic isn't being loaded.

  • [SOLVED] Boot problem - network fail

    Hi
This is my first time to use ArchLinux. I have used for 3 years Ubuntu and now i feel to step forward in my computing life. So, my first problem is that when i boot my computer network fail - so it writes (i use wireless atheros - i have laptop). When i login i can connect via wpa_supplicant to internet via router without problems. What am i doing wrong?
    Some excerpts from rc.conf:
    MODULES=(fuse network usblp)

    #eth0="eth0 192.168.0.2 netmask 255.255.255.0 broadcast 192.168.0.255"

    Hi
    Thx for responding
I follow this site http://www.cdavis.us/wiki/index.php/Ins … Networking and my rc.conf look like this now:
    MODULES=(fuse usblp)
    eth0="dhchp"
    wlan0="dhcp"
    INTERFACES=(eth0 wlan0)
DAEMONS=(syslog-ng dbus hal !network netfs crond alsa gdm networkmanager)
Then i did "gpasswd -a username network" and everything works fine now.

  • Network fails to load on 2.6 kernel since initsctip update..

Ok I updated to the new 0.7-2 of the initscripts and installed the udev package.. Whether I load the 2.6 kernel that worked perfectly before the initscripts update with the devfs-nomount or not network fails. It reads the pcmcia card just fine and loads perfectly with a 2.4 kernel.  This 2.6 kernel loaded perfectly prior to the initscripts update.
I am mainly looking for ideas on what it could be and what not. So if anyone has any ideas toss em my way. I hope I provided enough information.  If more info is need just tell me what info you need. Thanks for any help anyone can provide.

Ok after getting some sleep so I could think more clearly I figured out what the issue was. It has to do with loading the hotplug daemon.
FTP install loads a stock rc.conf from the new initscripts. In initscripts 0.7-2 the rc.conf loads the hotplug daemon before loading pcmcia and jsut after loading syslog-ng. This causes network daemon to error out on 2.6 kernels.
CD install doesn't load hotplug by default. So it doesn't error out when loading the network daemon on a 2.6 kernel. The cd install I did pacman -Syu affter install so all the base packages were current and the same ver as a ftp install.
What i did was load hotplug after network and everything works fine.I don't know if hotplug has to load in any certain order or not. I just made sure in my rc.conf on the daemons line that hotplug is listed after network and life is grand.
Note: Also remember this is only happening with the 0.7 initscripts and does not happen in the .6-8 or .6-9 initscripts.
I don't know if this is just affected my by system or not. So if anyone else with a laptop loading a pcmcia wifi/nic card could test this just to be sure..
If it matters I run yenta_socket for my pcmcia driver and orinoco_cs for my wifi card.  I tried loading them as modules and also compiled in on my 2.6 kernels and got the same affect. I even tried a stock arch 2.6 kernel.

We have setup and configured a new 1921 Router to give this branch Internet access. The new router 1921 , Cisco2900 XL switch and AP are next to each other in the new branch. ISP Router > 1921 Router > 2900XlL Switch > AP/PatchPanel
The AP is crrently connected in to the switch.
I already have a VLAN set up on the switch FA0/30 for regular internet access for the new branch. Do I have to set up another VLAN on the switch to isolate the new network on the AP? How would this work though with other wifi networks already operating on the AP and internet access for hard wired PCs.

Thank you Scott...This is where I'm at right now. The AP has been setup with the VLAN we configured on our switch. We have dedicated about 20 ports towards this VLAN - the AP is directed to one of the switch ports.
I can connect to the wireless AP (enter in SSID & Passphrase)but get no internet access, ipconfig shows no ip address. However,  I can successfully ping the IP address of the AP. Do I still need to have the VLAN  assigned in the AP Web interface while connected to a dedicated port on that VLAN?
If I'm not getting an IP address is has to be something to do the DHCP pool on the router?
    ANy suggestions/thoughts would be helpful!

  • I can't install my old Aiport Express base to my new network

    Hi
I have a first generation Airport Express base.
I have a new router and I can not parameterize the base for my new network.
I reset it, but it does not appear with the Airport Utility version 5 or version 6.

I use a Mac Mini with Mac OS 10.8.4.
AirPort utility 5.6.1 don't find My AE.
Are you saying that you have AirPort Utility 5.6.1 installed on your Mac with OS X 10.8.4?
I reset it the LED blink orange.
    That is normal
An Apple Network 613ad3 appere in the wifi menu.
That is also normal. No password should be required to connect to the Apple Network xxxxxx.
but i can't connect it connexion delay expire.
I cannot duplicate that same error when I test here, so I do not have an explanation or "fix" for you.
Try a complete Factory Default Reset on the Express as follows to see that helps:
Power off the Express and wait a few minutes
Hold in the reset button first, and keep holding it for an additional 9-10 seconds while you simultaneously plug the AirPort Express back in to power
Release the reset button after the 9-10 hold period
Alllow a full minute for the Express to restart
If you continue to have problems, you may have a defective Express. The normal life of an AirPort Express is about 4-5 years, and your device is at least 6 years old, and probably older.
