New RAM problems with my Dual G4 1.25 MDD

Howdy I've had my Dual G4 1.25 MDD for 2 years and love it. I got it with 1GB RAM, thinking I was set. For Christmas I wanted to Upgrade the RAM to 2GB. from My PowerMac G4 Manual I knew I needed 2x 512MB PC2700 DDR333 CL2.5 SDRAM DIMM's.
I went to DealRam (part of DealMac) and found 18004memory.com The price seemed great $39 per stick. I ordered it and within a week got 2x 512MB DIMM's. Problem was it was the Wrong RAM spec. I tried that RAM in my Mac 30 different ways and Everytime the computer either wouldn't boot, or it would suffer Kernel Protection Faults. One time it did boot up but the RAM only recognized as 2x 256MB DIMM's. I called the company, got an RMA and returned the RAM, this time they sent me 2 replacement DIMM's.... for a POWERBOOK, SO-DIMM's. I returned it again and finally Got from them the
2x 512MB PC2700 DDR333 CL2.5 SDRAM DIMM's. They call it Hyperspeed RAM. Anywho, I powered down let the system cool over night and in the morning, popped it open, put the RAM in the 2 open slots DIMM2/J23 & DIMM3/J20. closed it back up and powered up. Everything was snappier, the boot was quicker and I checked About this Mac, it says 2GB. Apple System Profiler showed all 4 DIMM's and I thought everything was fine.
Computer ran great for hours, no issues. Everything seemed quicker. Computer went to sleep overnight, next day woke from sleep and Tried to use iTunes and during an extensive sort for Songs, the system Locked up. Nothing would work. Had to force restart. this time I tried to Run my favorite online Game, WoW and after it loaded and I started to play, within 5 mins the whole game locked up. The audio sound went into a sort of Loop, I couldnt force quit and had to force reboot. This happened several times. I finally decided to Run the Apple Hardware Test. The Quick test locked up after running 2mins. I let it sit for 1hr just in case it was still doing something and the progress bar and time never progressed. So i forced reboot, ran Test again this time as Extended test. at 8 min & 31 sec the test stopped and I got an Error Code, this time I wrote it down "2MEM/2/4: DIMM3/J20."
I guess that DIMM failed. I shutdown, popped open case, and removed DIMM3/J20 leaving the Original 1GB RAM and One of the 512MB Upgrades. I rstarted the Test again and Ran the Extended Test once more. It ran for 27mins & 24 secs and everything passed. So. 1.5GB is better than just 1GB. I powered down and powered back up to try and play WoW. Within 5 mins of loading game to play, everything locked up again.
So I took both of the new RAM out and left the Original 1GB RAM and ran Test everything was great no Errors. Rebooted, and went onto WoW again and was able to play for several hours. I quit game and shut down for night.
I have since Tried the 2x 512MB DIMM's in over 10 different variations in the computer with and without the original RAM and everytime I run a high end program or game (WoW, iTunes, and Photoshop), I get lock ups, crashes, and other screen weirdness.
I dont want to have to Return the Memory again. I am already out over $15 from s/h with RMA's.
PLEASE Any ideas what to do?
1 thing I noticed the RAM gets very very hot, when I've powered down tand removed the new RAM. I wonder if there is a cooling issue?
Anytime I put the Original 1GB RAM in, I dont have problems!

Hi lz3broc,
Sounds very much like faulty RAM to me, I'm afraid. I'm not sure about the temperature it's running at, but if the surrounding DIMMs aren't having a problem then I would definitely point the finger at those new memory sticks not being up to scratch.
If you were convinced it was temperature related then you could always try putting heat spreaders on the memory to help with cooling, but as these stick (semi-permanently) to the RAM then you would never be able to return them.
My personal opinion is that you should send the RAM back and buy two new DIMMs from Crucial Technology. I only ever buy RAM made by them and I've never had a problem with it - it's the same stuff Apple themselves generally use and works a charm every time. Probably not the news you wanted to hear, but that's probably the only way you're going to get a stable machine with 2GB RAM.
Hope that helps,
Andy.

  • New Ram problems with my iMac G5 20' w/iSight

I purchased a 2 gig stick from (4-all-memory) web sight, got it the other day and installed it. I had removed 512MB stick from that one slot and added the new, it ran smooth for 24 hrs just fine, Then yesterday as I was downloading a couple-a shows from iTunes,(my Mac) it frooze up, had the sound that my Hard drive was making sounded like it was taking a ruff trip up a dirt road, makin all kindsa noise. I pulled the plug as that was the only thing that seemed to work to shut down. I tried to start up after a few, took several minutes to warm, then the noise, no screen etc. I then let the sucker cool down, tried again, same crap. I reversed my up-grade back to my 512MB stick and got everything to work kinda like before. My"About this Mac" button dose a restart kinda thing now when ever I try to see "About this Mac"? It shuts down everything few a second, then all comes back on as if just restarted, but never tells me 'about this mac'?
Any coments on what to do, ersuggestions. I would like to try the 2Gig stick again, but I am fearful that my iMac might just throw a fit, like me Ex?
    Thanks

Except for the keyboard & mouse, disconnect all devices from your computer when troubleshooting.
If you have not already done so:
Check the RAM install instructions in the manual that came w/your computer to make sure you installed the RAM correctly.
Boot from your Hardware Test DVD to confirm problem.
If you have Techtool PRO or Deluxe (make sure both are compatible w/your latest OS System) boot from same.
If a RAM problem shows up on any of the above, then you should return the RAM to the manufacturer. Hopefully, the RAM you purchased has a lifetime quaranty.

  • New RAM problems?

    Hello.
I recently purchased new RAM for my Apple. Since then, my laptop has been freezing up, not responding, and having problems with Safari. I put in the old RAM just to post this topic. Now things are fine!??? I don't understand.? Is this a problem with the chips (512 MB SYNC PC133 SODIMM). I have read that it might be the way I installed the sticks.
I have had to reboot my laptop 5 times an hour before I removed the new sticks and put the old ones back in.
Next... just how much damage have I just done to my Apple?
I installed Tiger last weekend. I have also had some problems with Apps. since then. I really don't understand.
Thanks for your concerns and help.
    Scared....
    Reilly

    Hi REILLY the NEW GUY,
Sounds like you got a bad stick of ram. Check back where you purchased it and tell them of your problems. They (if reputable) should replace it with ram that is compatible with what you need.

  • Installing new RAM: Compatible with existing RAM?

I've just ordered 8G of memory, 4 lots of 2G. I have 2x1G on board already. Will I need to uninstall the original RAM, or will it work happily with the new RAM?
Secondly, I see a warning in the Apple installation document that I need to remove the battery to get at the memory slots, and that replacing the battery incorrectly could cause an explosion. Seriously? I'm nervous enough just installing the RAM. I could do without explosions.

Depends on the manufacturer to be honest. I have 2GB of original RAM in my system with 10GB of OWC and they play happily together. I suppose it still holds true that you "get what you pay for" - they're not the cheapest, but I didn't break the bank.

I honestly did not see that warning on my 2008 Mac Pro and simply powered down, unplugged the power cord, took both memory risers out and installed the modules per the instructions of OWC (Macsales.com) - Kappy has posted those for you.
I've had them in for a couple of months now and couldn't be happier. I would suggest following Apple's instructions though, it could prevent serious damage to internal components caused by electrostatic shock.

  • New air problem with battery after upgrade to 10.6.5

    Hi List.
I bought new air about month ago. Everything was working like a charm.
2 days ago I did macos upgrade and I have big problem with battery performance. Only 2 hours of working after full charging. I decided to downgrade system to 10.6.4 and problem's gone.
Is there something wrong with 10.6.5 on new air?

    Hi,
I dont think there is something wrong with 10.6.5 simply because I have no problem with it
Since battery management is one of the SMCs, resetting it may solve the issue.

  • RAM and Virtual RAM Problems with Fireworks

I'm working on a Fireworks file with 25 pages and some heavy graphics. However, I've turned some of the heavy objects into symbols which are repeated from page to page.
The file is 17 Mb and my Virtual Memory bumps to 3.4 Gigs when I open this file and things are slow and often crash. I'm working on a Mac with CS4 and have 4 Gigs of RAM. The actual ram is 2.27 GB. Seems like a crap ton of Ram? Plus it's running slow and crashes regularly.
Please advise if there are settings I can change to improve the performance.

    I have this same problem.
We design websites like shops and stuff. We'll need to work out all the pages and show them to our clients.
I have just finished a site with 45 pages. I have to cut this up in 3 different files. Highly annoying. And working on a windows system to so you get my irritations.
I get the feeling that this is a result of the buggy-ness in Fireworks. The contact with the Adobe help-team is dramatic. I don't understand that you sell a product this expensive and not give a good service afterwhile.
I must say that i don't have any problems with the other programs. Only Fireworks. The rest is very good (to end with someting nice)

  • Problem with reading Dual Layer DVDs.

I've a normal iBook G4 with a combo drive (it's the 1 Ghz model) and when I insert a dual layer dvd which I've made on another computer at school, the drive in my iBook won't read it (as in it spits it out). I was wondering if this problem extends to everyone else with a similar model/drive.
The media I used is a TDK DVD+R dual layer disc. The drive has had a problem reading a dual layered DVD-R; the problem being that it could only read (possibly) only one layer of the disc.
Is there a firmware update that can applied to rectify the problem?

Hi and thanks for your reply.
I'm actually not sure if I can read commerical dual layer DVDs, but the fact that the DVD was pressed and not burnt, and that the DVD is released for commercial purchase has lead me to believe that my drive can read the DVDs.
Also backing up my drive's ability to read dual layer DVDs, as mentioned in my previous post, is that it could read parts of a DVD-R dual layer DVD. What I meant by parts, or, just one of the two layers, is that the dvd contains a folder which houses 4 gigabytes of data, or about half the DVD. The contents within this folder can be copied to the hard drive, whereas the content on the root of the DVD can not, causing the drive to continually spin the disc, making the "trying really hard to read" noise, forcing me to restart the computer whilst holding the mouse button in order to get the dvd out.

  • Reboot problems with iMac dual intel 1.83 OS 10.4.6

Needing help. Mac user since 1999 but I'm feeling like a novice with this. Wife was playing Sims 2 when it locked up and wouldn't allow the game to be turned off. Did a forced restart, disk went to the grey screen with the spinning gear for an extended period. Went to bed and the next morning the blue screen was on with OS X label as if computer was booting successfully but the hard drive sounded as if it was stuck in a loop. Got the installation disc and figured out how to eject the game and install the disc. Did safe boot and computer will goto the grey screen with the spinning gear and then will turn itself off.
Tried to reinstall OS X 10.4.4 while archiving in a separate folder and after verifying the disc the install fails. Ran hardware check came back o.k. Tried to boot from install disc and it just takes me back to the install disc start-up. Ran disc utility to repair premissions and it hung up after 30 minutes and the hard drive sounded like it was stuck in a loop. Ran disc utility to repair hard drive, first checks came back o.k. and then stated it was not completed due to an underlying issue when it tried to back out.
The hard drive is partitioned from boot camp, deleted windoze and tried to install OS X on the 20 gigs partitioned. The disc again verified but then failed- which threw me for a loop (does not appear dirty or scratched). My intention was to boot up on the partition and then try to retrieve pictures and videos on the hard disc, unfortunately only 1/2 is currently backed up.
I have not tried fsck yet because I was confused how to get to it, I think I am supposed to use the start up disc and go to the terminal application then enter the command, is this correct?
Unfortunately I am having to type this at work while the computer is at home- so if there are suggestions please dump them on me and I will try all of them tonight. No broken folders, kernal panics or exclamation points thus far.
    Thanks for all the help.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
When you verified with disk utility the disk, you basically ran fsck. Permissions are another factor here, but the fact it failed the disk check suggest major directory problems with the hard disk. Unfortunately the only third party directory repair utilities that I know work well currently are for PowerPC Macs only. If you have another Mac, suggest putting the iMac in target disk mode and see if it is seen by the other Mac. The target disk mode is described by this article:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=58583
If it is, then you can recover your data.
If it is not, my suggestion is to get an external Firewire hard drive, and Prosoft Data Rescue and see if it is able to recover the information to it.
http://www.macsales.com/ sells equivalent Firewire hard drives for good prices, and http://www.prosofteng.com/ is where to get Data Rescue.
In addition, there may be suggestions people in the Boot Camp forum can offer:
    http://discussions.apple.com/forum.jspa?forumID=1165
My suggestion is to find a way to completely and safely remove Boot Camp and only use it on non-production machines.
I don't think your problem is an online networking issue, which I see you posted in that forum.

  • New Behance problem with Lightroom 5.6

I have a problem with Behance and Lightroom 5.6. I have the wrong Adobe CC account linked to Behance and nothing I have done has fixed it. I believe it's a 5.6 bug. I do not have in the Lightroom Publishing Manager Under Behance account the option to log out. I mean it simply is not there not on the screen doesn't exist is invisible to the human eye. You ge the idea. Login is grayed out so it cannot be clicked on. and sign up does opens my browser and lets me sign in to either of my Adobe CC accounts but this does nothing for me. I believe this is simply a bug because I've seen a screen shot of publishing manager screen and in that screen shot it has logout, but now it's gone in 5.6. Is there a work around?

  • HP P6720F - Ram problem with frequent BSOD's but it gets worse ...

I have a weird problem that has been made worse.  Frequent and random BSOD's caused me to isolate the ram as the problem and the motherboard as the likely culprit.  I suspect it is still a software related problem in some way on the chipset and iin conflict with software.
    Two part problem:
    1.  I can only use one channel of Dimm ram (slot 2 and slot 4).  The other channel does not work.  Slot 4 seems to be the most stable and all ram sticks check out OK in slot 4.
I was working through this problem trying to find a solution and I found a recommendation to update the bios.  I checked and my bios was an old version.
...and this is where problem two comes in.
    2.  I attempted to download the new bios from your link.
Half way through the download, ...the computer crashed (BSOD).  I have tried to restart the computer but it acts dead.  I have had this problem before and was able to eventually get it restarted even after looking totally dead (frequent and persistent restarts will eventually get it restarted) but this time I was downloading a new bios.
Under the circumstances, ...is it worth trying to get it to restart or is this computer dead?

    Jeb, welcome to the forum.
If the BIOS was simply downloading, the crash should not have hurt it.  I suggest clearing the CMOS.  The instructions are near the bottom of the page.  Let me know what happens.

  • 4gb Ram problem with P6N 650i. 2gb work fine

I have been researching this problem for 2 days now in my free time, but I havent made any progress.  First off, here is my system
    MSI 650i P6N SLI
    2gb G. Skill DDR2 800
    2gb Patriot DDR2 800
    two 250gb HDs
    E6300 @ 1.86ghz
    8800GTS 512mb
And here is the problem, I have been running the 2gb of G. SKill Ram for quite some time, perfectly fine, then I bought this Patriot, Gaming ram off a friend.  Running all  4gb, the system takes about 10 minutes to boot up, and is extremely slugish from there.  But running either pair of 2gb on its own works perfectly fine...
I think this is a fairly common problem, and I found all kinds of different fixes, but either they didnt work, or didnt apply to me.  I saw something about upgrading to BIOS version 1.24 for the SLI FI board, but that is a completely different MOBO then mine...  I upgraded to 2.60 BIOS, which is the latest, and it didnt help at all.  So if anyone has any ideas, that would be really great!!
If you need more info too I can give.
I am fairly computer literate too, but this is a pretty tough fix for me to figure out...
    Thanks!!

    Hello,
New here finally found someone with my same problem!!!  My signature has my setup, and I still have a problem getting 4GB of memory to work with my setup.  It is 4 x 1GB modules, and if I put any combination in the channels, the 4GB won't work, and any arrangement of 1-3GB works just fine.   The 4th gig gives me a blue screen while Vista is loading, and it's always a different error code.
I got in touch with Patriot's tech support, who said the voltage to the memory should be increased.  I didn't quite buy that, and haven't tried it yet because I wanted to find a better solution.
EVGA's tech support said to update the BIOS.  Based on this thread, that sounds like the fix, however I am having trouble updating the BIOS.  EVGA's instructions are worthless.  I have the most current BIOS version on a CD ready to boot with, but when I try to boot from the CD, nothing happens.  It looks like I need to flash the CMOS first?  I tried a procedure on a website and it didn't work.  When I get to the screen to flash it, the comp is frozen.  Is there a jumper I need to remove?
I would appreciate some help in this matter.  Thanks!

  • RAM problems with a Pismo

Following great advice from you guys (jpl and Cornelius etc), and after my usual very long period of procrastination before getting a job done following ordering all the parts and then having them sitting around, I finally upgraded the HDDs of my two Pismos (a 400MHz and a 500MHz) to 60GB and 120GB respectively. All of that went very well using great IFIXIT instructions and SuperDuper!/Carbon Copy Cloner software - I tried them both to see how they worked and they were both very good. I then successfully installed Tiger into both of them after upgrading their RAM. Now the bad news, I had originally ordered four Low Profile 512MB RAM modules on eBay of the correct specification quite a while ago from the FastMemoryMan/Emartbuy outfit to upgrade both Pismos to the maximum of 1GB RAM each but I had not tried to install and use them until very recently. When I did, none of them worked and it was so long ago that I've now completely done my dough in regard to returns and warranty - all my own fault, unfortunately! Being a glutton for punishment, I ordered four more 512MB RAM chips on eBay of the correct specification for Pismo from the SmileNTango outfit. This time just TWO of them worked but the other two did not so I was able to max out the RAM in the 500MHz Pismo to IGB. I am now in negotiation with SmileNTango about returning the ones that did not work and they have offered the option of a full refund for them. However, they are also telling me that the reason they did not work was not because they were faulty but because the Pismo motherboard is 'picky' about RAM specs and their regular RAM modules are not guaranteed to work with it. However, for quite a bit of extra money (funny, that), they can supply me with two types of RAM that will work. The price differences are huge and I know I could get modules from OWC at a much better price. Does this explanation sound correct - I must say that it doesn't to me! How is it that I ended up with so many RAM modules that did not work in my Pismos and is it true that not all of these types of 512MB modules will work correctly in a Pismo. Can the modules be tested and/or repaired or are they now just junk? I did not expect this problem but, on a much more positive note, I was very pleasantly surprised at how easy it was to upgrade the Pismos and I really enjoyed doing the upgrades, after feeling quite daunted by it, and I would encourage anyone else to give it a try. I just love those Pismo Powerbooks. I am now going to upgrade my iMac after ordering all the upgrade parts - another job I have been putting off! Many thanks in advance for any advice or information. Cheers, Steve

    Steve:
I was under the impression that the RAM under the daughterboard had to be Low Profile but that it did not matter for the one on top - is this not correct?
That is true for the WallStreet. The Pismo will take standard RAM modules.
Should I get a refund for all four of them or do I keep the two that work - ie will they keep working?
I would keep the ones that work. If they are sound, they should continue to work. You can test RAM by running the Apple Hardware Test from the disk which came with the computer, or you can use Rember-Memory Test.
I noticed OWC was doing these 512MB modules for around $30.00 - would these be 100% reliable?
Yes. OWC is an excellent source. Their products are reliable as is their customer service and tech support. I would have no hesitation buying from them.
the prices for these RAM modules in Australia were quite high - two or three hundred dollars each - almost more than the Pismo is worth!
I was not aware that you were in Australia. Sorry (not sorry that you are in Australia, but because I was not aware of it). You might want to include your location in your profile. It is helpful to us as we attempt to answer your questions.

  • Disk problems with my dual 1.8 GHz G5

    Hi guys!
Here are the events as they happened:
+ I opened my copy of EyeTV 1.8.4 to tune in the channel that I had scheduled said application to record.
+ After a minute or two, the hard disk begins to thrash heaviliy, each jump and stutter matching the drop in signal reception of the channel through EyeTV.
+ It takes me over two minutes to get to the Apple menu to select the Force Quit... menu option and quit EyeTV.
+ The hard drive continues to thrash for several minutes before becoming responsive once more.
+ I again attempt to open EyeTV but the same thing happens again.
+ After several more minutes, I attempt to quit all open applications and restart. The amount of disk activity during this time is extremely heavy.
+ I restart my G5. During the restart, the hard drive is noticably more active than usual.
+ I check for software updates and decide to install them.
+ I first open Disk Utility and begin to Repair Permissions. However, I'm given a warning that Disk Utility has lost connection to the disk controller, or words to that effect. I can't stop the process and if I attempt to quit Disk Utility, I'm told that doing so could leave the hard drive 'non-operational', which isn't really what I wanted to hear.
+ I make a near-complete back up all that I can before again tackling the errant Disk Utility.
+ I quit Disk Utility and restart my G5 using my install CD. I attempt to check the hard drive using the copy of Disk Utility on the CD. As I do so, the fans on my G5 begin to steadily increase in speed. Over the course of the checking process, the fan speed is so high, I actually have to move away because at this point, it sounds like something going to explode!
+ I [think that I] manage to quit Disk Utility in time and the G5 restarts.
+ After trawling this forum, I manage to find a solution to the permissions issue (go to: http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=1505537#1505537).
However, there's still no explanation for the initial hard drive problems, or the a reason for the fans going bonkers while using Disk Utility.
    Any help would be cool!
Dual G5 1.8GHz   Mac OS X (10.3.9)   1 gigabyte of RAM, 160 gigabyte hard drive

The hard drive working itself into a frenzy and the fans going bonkers are a sign that the mac has a runnaway process.
If you can involk the situation after starting process viewer or look at your system logs in Console (utilities folder) you may get a hint as to what is making your mac go into warp speed.

  • New Amazon Problems with Safari 2.0.2

There is a problem I discovered tonight on Amazon.com that seems to be affecting Safari. This problem is new and has been introduced in the last week or two. When you look for a music CD, the page should show the individual disc and price and then have a secton below called "Better Together" that shows two discs and a "Buy Both" button. In Safari, the individual disc information, price and artwork no longer shows and the only option is to buy both. If I open the same page in Firefox, both sections display correctly. For example, do a search on No Doubt, "Return of Saturn". Look at the page in Safari and then do the same search in Firefox. You'll see the Safari page is missing the top section. Not sure what Amazon is doing but this is new. Makes it tough to download cover art. Maybe that's the idea.
    G4 PowerBook 17   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

Good suggestions, unfortunately, none seemed to help. I went to a different user account (I too keep one around for testing) and same thing happened there. I also disabled JavaScript and Java and no difference. When I go to books and movies, everything looks fine. No trouble there and everything seems to display correctly. The only problem is with CD's.
The good news is I think I found the fix. I had previously cleaned out my Amazon cookies which didn't seem to help so in my test user account, I reset Safari which cleared out all the cookies. When I tried it again, the page displayed correctly. I went back and reviewed the new cookies Amazon created and found those same cookies in my regular user account. Once deleted, everything appears to work normally. There were two sets of cookies on my machine. One set were .amazon and the others were www.amazon. It looks like the .amazon cookies were the culprits.
My guess is that they've changed something recently because I've been downloading a lot of art work over the past several weeks. For whatever reason, that conflicted with a cookie setting. • Photoshop CS6 have problems with my dual graphics card

I'm currently using photoshop cs6 on my laptop (hp pavilion dv4 3114 ), and this laptop has dual graphics cards(one is mobile intel hd graphics, the other one is ati hd 6750), it ususlly switches to the faster one when games are running or some software that requires a lot of graphic work. But this time I have already set in the graphics card profile to let photoshop use the faster one, but when I launch photoshop cs6 it tells me that the graphics card is not officially supported, as you can see this in the screenshot.
Then I turned to photoshop's preference(performence) and found it only identifies the mobile intel hd graphics. I'm currently using photoshop for designing large posters so performence is very important for me. Is anyone know how to solve this problem so that photoshop can run with the highest performence?

II can't imagine how these computer companies expect to fully integrate GPUs from two different vendors, but they're trying.  To me, knowing a bit about how display drivers are implemented, it seems an impossible task.
I hve heard (in the context of Macs that have this option) that disabling the low power options so that only the more powerful GPU is active can help.  I don't know if that can apply to your system, but it might give you an idea of a place to start looking.
Another thing might be to try to find whatever settings it offers for "affinity" and set it so Photoshop and its cousins use just the ATI GPU exclusively.  It might be the "switchover" process that is causing the problems.
    Good luck.
