New to graphics

I'm writing an applet and I'm first creating a Frame with buttons, textareas, and textfields. What I really need to do is be able to use images 'instead' of the buttons and as a background to the overall Frame as well. In addition (although this part is not very crucial for the time being) how can I create custom pull-down menus (as in ones that look the way I want them to) in the Frame as well?
Does anyone know the best way to add an Image overtop of a component like a button? Please keep in mind that I must avoid any Swing and use only AWT classes. Thanks in advance.

You should probably find the GUI trail and follow that to get a feeling of how GUIs and graphics work. Get something working then start playing with customizing it

If you look at the first one, you should be able to align quite easily as follows, View>Smart Guides being your friends:
1a) ClickDrag the top flower with the Selection Tool (black arrow) so it is clear of the pointy part;
1b) Click an empty spot on the Artboard to deselect, then ClickDrag the top flower by its bottom Anchor Point (Smart Guides say anchor when you are close enough to grab it) down to snap to the top Anchor Point on the pointy part (Smart Guides say anchor when you are close enough);
1c) Do the same for the boroom flower.
If you look at the third one, to get the triangles and the hexagon sized and aligned precisely, you may, creating them with stroke and no fill:
3a) Click with the Polygon Tool and select a suitable/chosen Radius and 6 Sides, then Object>Transform>Rotate by 30 degrees (or use the Rotate option in the Transform palette), you may Object>Transform>Reset Bounding Box to have it look nicer;
3b) Click with the Polygon Tool and select the same Radius and 3 sides, then deselect and ClickDrag the top Anchor Point to snap to the top Anchor Point of the hexagon;
3c) Object>Transform>Rotate by 180 degrees clicking Copy, deselect, and ClickDrag the bottom Anchor Point to snap to the bottomAnchor Point of the hexagon;
3d) Select all and Ctrl/Cmd+G to Group (for alignment purposes, you will know why if you try without grouping, see below).
To create full symmetry, you may use circles rather than almost circular ellipses; you may:
3d) Click with the Ellipse Tool and select a suitable/chosen Width = height;
3e) Object>Transform>Move a copy vertically by the Height (= Width) twice (or you may Ctrl/Cmd+D to repeat), to get three circles over one another with no gaps;
3f) Select the topmost and bottommost ones and Object>Transform>Rotate a copy by 120 degrees twice, to have all the seven circles precisley touching one another; you may Group them, but it is not necessary.
To have everything aligned, just:
3g) Select everything and click Vertical Align Center and Horizontal Align Center in the Align palette; you may click the pointy group or the circles ojnce more before aligning if you want to keep it in place (that will make it the key object that the other set is aligned to).
These ways may also help you further.

New Iris graphics on newest MBP 13in 2.4ghz fast enough? Any lag?

So I've been googling my heart out trying to find anyone who has bought the new MBP 13in 2.4ghz (any ram/hdd combo) and reported on this or not, and have yet to find any that didn't say "it SHOULD be totally smooth" (or the like). I bought my first MBA in September, but then found out about the October event, so I returned it in case the new MBP fit what I wanted better (although the battery life was absolutely amazing on the air).
The final decision maker for me between buying another 13in Air, or going for the 13in MBP, is if the new Iris graphics can push the retina display without lag consistently. I read about the 2012 retina models with the intel 4000 onboard graphics lagging for people due to it not being powerful enough. I prefer the 13in model because it's size works best for what I need, and both just fit into what I can afford, so the 15in is off the table.
Can anyone who has purchased the based MBP model comment on if the scrolling and general experience is smooth, or if they are experiencing any lag? This will be my first macbook, and want the best experience I can get (for what I can afford obviously). If the base MBP isn't strong enough for retina, I have no problem getting the Air with amazing battery life and still good screen quality, but I believe at 9hrs of battery and retina, the new MBP would fit the perfect balance for me of battery vs display quality.
I went into the apple store yesterday to judge for myself if retina makes enough of a difference to make it a second option (versus just getting the Air), and the retina is beautiful. I thought the Air's screen looked great until I played on the retina for a bit, the colors look great, and for some reason, I've very anal about the quality of my fonts, and they just looked amazing on the MBP. The reason I have turned to the community here is that, sure I did some very minor testing, but a little while in the store going through their demos isn't quite the same as someone who has used it for days in real life. Obviously I can return one if I'm not satisfied and get the other, but who wants to get a computer setup the way they want, only to run into problems and return it a few days later.
If this has been asked already, I apologize and if you could point me to that thread, I would be grateful.

Very New to Graphic Design and Printing

Hi - I have recently gotten into graphic design for print...invitations, etc, and I purchased an Epson R1900 for my studio. This is my first printer purchase and I am also very new to CS5 (self-teaching over the last 2-3 months). So, you can only imagine my printer frustrations...first I had color management issues (still do, but much closer than before due to online research) and now I am trying to load custom paper and print from Illustrator (also using Mac with OSX 10.5.8). I keep getting a message saying "The source selected in the printer driver is not appropriate for the paper that is loaded in the printer." What is going on? I can't have printer issues every time I go to print something!!! Please help me!

In your Applications folder there should be an Epson Printer Utility. You need to change to the custom size there at the driver level and then again in your print dialog when printing the file.
Many problems with Epson Printer Drivers. In my case I could never get the printer utility to show up on my Mac (even after updating drivers, resetting my printers, troubleshooting with Epson, etc). I finally gave up and started using my PC to print to this printer, so I could change to custom size and roll fed.

New to Graphics in ABAP

Hi all!! I have a requirement to create a program that shows a graphic chart, but must show 2 graphic on the same chart, that is a bar graph and a line graph on the same chart. This is to compare actual data with data from previous years, so it must be done on the same chart but with a different type.
I've been looking for examples on trx GRAL, on SAP Help, but I've found nothing like this.
Have anybody done something that might help?

New Intel graphics, OpenGL and CS6

Currently I'm using an iMac in my home studio but I need to buy a notebook this summer for work, and I'll be using Adobe CS programs so I'll likely have to upgrade to CS6. I'd like to buy a 2.4 GHz 13" MacBook Pro to save a little money (since I have a killer iMac), but I notice the MacBooks now have Intel integrated graphics instead of nVidia. How is OpenGL 2.0 implemented on the Intel graphics chip? Does it work o.k.? I have a chance to buy a late-model 15" MacBook Pro with the discreet graphics card for not much more money, but I don't think I can afford a new MacBook Pro with discreet ATI graphics.
I am looking for advice: Do photoshop and illustrator work well on the Intel graphics chip?

I can answer your question with "It depends". I am having issues with non NVidia Graphics Cards while working in Mountain Lion with Illustrator CS6 and applying shadows / effects to text and objects. Everytime I am trying to do this, illustrator crashes.
If I use a Mac with NVidia it works without any problems. But Intel or Radeon cards force illustrator to crash. I tested this very often on all versions of Mountain Lion so far released an on several Macs. Same result every time.
Everything else I use in Photoshop or Illustrator works like charm. No problems at all. The Intel HD 4000 is faster than the NVidia 9600M GT in my old MacBook Pro.
I am designing almost every day in Photoshop and every two days in Illustrator. I have not tested the 3D functions much, so I cannot give you any advice for this.
If you are sure you are not applying effects to your objects in Illustrator, go for the small portables.

New iMac Graphic Cards

Yes I am a multimeida major in college and I am thinking of buying the new iMac I have an older G4 Powerbook that works ok but it will not run the new iMoive. So I am thinking in time the G4's will be a thing of the past. My question is, I don't play much games at all but if I did get into playing games is the iMac good for games or no? I mean i've heard the graphics card is not that great but I don't know much about graphic cards. Any help would be great.

We just bought a new aluminum 20 inch iMac. The only game my family plays is the Sims 2. Imagine our shock at discovering that our sparkly new computer won't play this game. Aspyr (the company that makes the Sims 2 for Mac) tells me that at this time they cannot support any of their games on the new iMacs because of the ATI 2400/2600. They are working with Apple to try and fix the problem, but there is no timeline as to when this might happen.
We love our new computer, but if we had known about this issue in advance we would not have purchased it.

RoboHelp for Word will not show new .WMF graphics

I am working on a help file, and I have to insert equations that I would like to attach pop-ups to. I add the .wmf graphic and add the pop-up, but when I compile the image is not there. This is an older file that was converted over to Robohelp for word and it has .wmf graphics that compile. The only ones that do not show up are the new ones I add to the project. There is just a blank space where the graphic should be. The only way I can get the graphic to show is to convert it into a .shg graphic and then it works. I don't want to keep converting the .wmf file to .shg it is just a waste of time, and it makes my image folder double in size. I have tried inserting the equation as an object in word, but that will not allow me to link it to a pop-up and still have the equation there. Any help with this would be greatly appreciated. was key in solving this problem.
For a quick summary of the result -- our Help Desk
uninstalled and reinstalled Outlook, Word, and RoboHelp. Then they
reinstalled Word and Outlook; needed to change an "Advanced"
setting in outlook; to get Word to stop giving me the error
messages, they needed to redo my user profile. Then after I was
confident that Word and Outlook were working correctly, this
afternoon I installed RoboHelp X5 via my CD, and then downloaded
and installed these two patches from Adobe.com:
- rho_x501.exe (for the RH Office Word 2003 Support Update)
- rho13_x502.exe (for the Microsoft XP Service Pack 2 Support
Update X5.0.2).
I'm so thankful that RoboHTML and RoboHelp for Word seem to
be working well! Thanks again!

New icons/graphic in forum

I just noticed that there are 2 new graphics on the legend of the forum topic pages for "helpful answer" and "correct answer" (see them over there to the right? - OK, where'd they go?!?!?!?!).
I really like the implication of what these (apparently) represent - but who is going to monitor all the postings to apply these neat little ditties? Sounds like an army of Oracle summer interns are going to become intimately familiar with the OTN forums. ;^)

As it is a forum, I think it is a good idea. Someone who posts zillions of messages is not necessarily helping the forum out as much as someone who posts a few spot on answers. The spot on answers might be read and used by dozens so they're likely to get a good proportion of the users clicking answered and this is more a measure of their input than sheer volume of postings.

Where can I get the power plug for my new mac graphics card?

I bought a new graphics card and am just now installing it, but I need the mini PCI-e power cord to PCI-e cord to power the card? Where can I get that cord?

If you buy the 5770 from Apple as an upgrade kit it has the cable(s) - two for the 5870, one for 5770.
If you bought a mac pro mid-2010 it may very well have come with cable(s), that I have never read or heard from others.
OWC has not always inicluded cables but has charged extra, as they did with eVGA GTX285 where Apple sold with cables, and buying from OWC added another $30? or more to the cost with cables "extra" is what I recall.

Will the new ATI graphics card work on PowerMac G5 Quad?

I'm having a problem with my PowerMac G5 Quad, simply the graphics card is at fault. The rest of the machine is in perfect working order. I need a new graphics card and i've searched ebay (UK) and found some products. However, I would like a new graphics card with a little more power.
As I develop code using the OpenCL API on the windows machine, I would like to transfer this process over to my Mac (have to install OpenCL API myself, as Leopard does not have native OpenCL support). More importantly, OpenCL supports selected GPU types i.e. latest GPUs from ATI/Nvidia.
Simply put, would anyone know or have experience installing the newer ATI/NVIDIA generation of Mac Graphic cards on PowerMac G5 Quads and if so, which graphic card (ATI RADEON 4850 etc).
As I think about this, both PowerMac G5 Quad and Mac Pro utilise PCI-E and yes, even though graphics cards are not particularly interchangeable on different architectures (or are they?) I would just like to know if anyone can give me advice or if anyone has had success or failure at such an attempt.
I really cannot afford to buy a Mac Pro machine and there is still many years of life left in my PowerMac G5. I really need your help and advice friends.

No modern card will work in a G5.
The best that one can do in a PCIe graphics G5 is to use a flashed Geforce 7800 GTX 512MB card.
That card is the pinnacle of GPU power for a G5.
There are no options beyond that.

Brand New MacBook Graphics Slower Than Year Older Model!

Hi,
Are the new late 2007 MacBooks supposed to have slower graphics than the previous year's models? If I try to run the new Leopard Arabesque screen saver on a 2007 MacBook with a Intel GMA X3100 graphics chip, the animation is jerky and stroboscopic. However if I try Arabesque on a year old MacBook, the animation is smooth and fluid.
Is this a fault with the particular 2007 MacBook I've tested, or are they all like this?

It's very interesting as most users never notice the difference, just those that actually push their equipment a little.
As with most issues like this I would invite you to open a ticket in the [Apple Bug Reporting System|http://bugreport.apple.com> so that Apple can add your information to their impact report and get this fixed quicker.

What will a new/upgraded graphics card do for my Dual 1Ghz Quicksilver?

In hunting for a new graphics card I see all kinds of specs, features and benchmarks, but before layin' out $$$ for a Radeon 9800 I wonder if anybody can tell me exactly what benefit I'll get? I've seen nothing here or at xlr8yourmac or 2-pop or C|Net telling me what difference I'll actually SEE on my existing monitor simply by installing a new card.
1) I am not a gamer
2) I use Photoshop every day
3) I use iMovie HD a coupla times per week
4) I use Final Cut Pro 5 once or twice per month
The main thing I want to achieve is a more accurate "preview" of what the images/video will look like on client's TVs or monitors. As it is now, everything looks too dark on my monitor, so I'm over-brightening footage and images, which look washed-out when others view 'em.
I can't afford a new Intel Mac until mid-2009... but money spent today for a new Radeon might be smart for this G4/QS... but NOT if I also have to buy a new monitor. Thoughts? Suggestions?

A new card will give you more speed but won't change the image quality.. If you images are too dark, you may need to calibrate your monitor. It may also be due to different gamma settings for PCs and Macs.

Qosmio X300 - new nvidia graphic drivers are uninstallable: no nvidia chip

i have the qosmio X300-14P with windows 7..
i play actual games (f.e. skyrim) which need the LATEST video driver!
the x300 is said to have a nvidia geforce 9800M GTX video chip.
however, when i download the latest driver (295.73 today), at installation it says :
no nvidia hardware detected - unable to install !

this is so with all nvidia drivers in the last 2 years (with windows 7 and windows vista alike) !
what is the problem ?
did toshiba not include an nvidia chip, but a cheap chinese noname chip, or what is the problem here ?
whatever notebook i had before the toshiba, it would accept actual nvidia drivers.
only the toshiba qosmio x300 doesnt.
why ?
it is vital that i install the latest drivers, how can i get by this problem ?
the driver that toshiba offers for the qosmio x300 is almoust 3 years old (2009, now it is 2012!) -
this is ridiculous!
an actual video/graphics driver is urgently needed, it is vital that the nvidia drivers work.

yes i am a gamer and therefore i need always the very latest graphics driver.
(yes, skyrim runs, but not with highest settings of course).
but i am about to buy a new notebook soon anyway.
this branding is a problem i came across earlier with the toshiba ram already.
that's the reason why this time i dont buy a new toshiba notebook anymore,
i will switch to lenovo.
i thought about the qosmio x770, as it has some nice features.
but they removed firewire etc., well ok, i could maybe live with that,
BUT i CANNOT live without an express card slot !
the xpress card slot is vital, as only there you can expand your notebook.
missing firewire could be corrected by a firewire express card, i always
use e-sata hdd connections, so i have an express card with 2 esata ports
(to have faster hdd writings). one internal esata port (even a combo port esata/usb2)
is just not eno8gh for me, i have usually connected 2 or 3 external drives.
as well i quite often use my express tv + video card.
that a notebook at this price has no express card slot is unbelievable !
this is a knockout feature for me.
i can swallow a lot, but not a missing express card slot, as this is the only feature
that makes it possible to expand a laptop (with a e-sata card, with a tv card, f.e.).
and so i could switch my tvc card and my esata card and whatever else i need
or might need later.
i might have purchased the x770 had it an express card slot, but without
it is so ridiculous that i would never buy it, no matter how good the other features are.
an express card slot is VITAL for every notebook.
that someone could spare it it like selling a rain jacket without a zip.
too bad, because else the x770 is not so bad.
i wonder what made them cut the express card out in a notebook
(that is not expand-friendly anyway).
