New to iMac and iMovie-can I grab a shot from a movie to use as an image?
Hi,
I took some video of my son juggling and I would love to grab an image from it to make in to a still shot. I can't seem to find any instructions on if I can do this.... I would think it would be an option??

Can anyone recommend a good book for using iMovie? I would love to be able to use it to make videos of my son for my Mom who isn't mobile anymore, but I always seem to stumble over things.
As for books, the Missing Manual is really good in my opinion. The iMovie 11 version isn't out for another couple of weeks, but the iMovie 09 is. Wait for the new version if you can

I have years of video taken with a Canon Vixia HF20. Came with a Pixela software that stores the clips as .cpi and .mts files. Can't say I know what these are but my PC and the Pixela software recognize the files. Does anyone know how I can import these and/or convert to a format that will be recognized by imovie???

usually, mts is part of an AVCHD-strcuture. So, for future use, import straight from your cam/SDcard, don't 'strip-off' the mts.
.cpi contains nothing important…

I have a new MB Air and I can't get the music from my I phone to get onto Itunes on the computer
I have tried to syn the phone to the computer but it has not worked. I once got a message that stated, "would you like to make you phone music library the same as that on the computer" or something to that affect, I said no ( I have no music on the computer!) I need to get the music on my Iphone into the Itunes of the computer. Thanks for any advice
i had the same problem, my MBA hd was corrupted and had to reinstall osx. all data was lost, the option to retain data, did not work. the only way i was able to retain the saved itune data on my iphone and itouch and ipod was to buy a transfer software and backup the music/books into a file on the mac then transfer back to the new itunes. but lots of work since the files do not transfer in the same order as it is in the devices. if you find a easy way let me know.

I backed up my old core 2 duo imac and and was trying to transfer files to my new 2011 imac and when i go to oppen a folder from what i transferred it says "The folder “Music” can’t be opened because you don’t have permission to see its contents". Why cant i access the files from my old mac? I tried the time machine and that isnt working either. I have files that I need to use on my new mac, all my old programs and such. I thought they said it was easy to get your files from one mac to another. Please help.
Your account names are probably different on the two Macs. If you know the UNIX command line, open a terminal window and run:
$ id
You should see a line that starts with something like this:
uid=501(your_user_id_here)
now check the owner of the folder you copied over:
$ ls -ld Music
drwx------+ 8 some_user_id_here staff 272 May 14 16:08 Music
Do the IDs match? If not, you could change the ownership. Say your id is "johnsmith"
$ chown -R johnsmith Music
Now try and access it with iTunes. -
I am new with iMac and I am trying to copy some file from my external HDD that a used with my PC but it does not let me also I can't delete anything from this HDD using the finder. Can somebody help me , please?
No, unfortunately, when you format a drive, it will erase all the contents. So you will need to find a temporary "storage" place to put the stuff using a PC so you have access to it. Then reformat using Disk Utility (Applications > Utilities). If only using with mac, format Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and use GUID Partition scheme under Partitions/Options. After formatting, you can drag the files back.

You might consider restoring to factory specs, as detailed in the booklet that shipped witht the machine, using the Setup Assistant on first boot, and then reinstalling those new programs. i've not moved pictures, so you could always give that a shot.

I lost my Serial number for InDesign and need it to load InDesign not my new iMac. How can I request my number from Adobe?
Could it be registered under a different identity? I've used three identities over the years to register stuff, so I have to do some looking around to find stuff. Try old email addresses as possible IDs.

My new LaCie external hard drive is 'seen' by my iMac and I can go into the Finder and open files and folders. I am using the hard drive for Time Machine back up. However Time Machine says it can't find the drive.
The same thing happened recently between Final Cut Express and my other LaCie external hard drive used as the Scratch disk. It fixed itself.

You cannot have time machine backups on your hard drive if you intend to use it in FCPX.

I just got a new iPhone 4 and i tried to download some songs from my itunes account onto my phone and it bricked my phone! So I can't use my phone, it's locked. It shows a plug going into an adaptor frozen on my phone. How can I resolve this problem? I got my phone at Verizon yesterday so I went back to see if they could help me today and they didn't know anything about it at the Verizon store. Theyy said to try IMac store here in town...
Ask the Verizon store to exchange your iPhone for a different iPhone 4.

Providing specifics on all the ways to do this will take more time than I am willing to spend here these days. You can do some of this with Home Sharing. You can transfer the entire library from one computer to another, If you do that you can delete what you don't want from the transferred library.
Quick answer if you use iTunes' default preferences settings: Copy the entire iTunes folder (and in doing so all its subfolders and files) intact to the other drive. Open iTunes and immediately hold down the option (alt) key (shift on Windows) so you get a prompt to select a library, then guide it to the 'iTunes Library.itl' file in the moved iTunes folder. If you put the copied iTunes folder in the default location of Macintosh HD > Users > *User Name* > Music then you don't even need to start with the option key held down, iTunes will automatically look for it there. (Make sure there isn't anything already in the iTunes folder there that you want to keep since you will be replacing it with the one you are moving.)
You do not want to use a new AppleID. Change the AppleID on the new phone to the old ID. Purchases made with one AppleID cannot be transferred to a different one and it will be a royal pain to manage two Apple IDs.
Change iTunes Store account on an iOS device - Log out of your current account with Settings.app > Store (Settings > iTunes & App Stores on iOS 6) > tap on your AppleID. Log in with a different account. Hi, I got iMac and I can not open file "doc" when I have downloaded from distance learning internet page. I have office program, but when I try to open file it shows: u1-assesment.doc uses a file type that is blocked from opening in this version.?

Purchased new 27 iMac and cannot seem to find PAGES, NUMBERS or KEYNOTE programs. I installed OS X MAV and still cannot find them. In the app store they cost money.

I have just agreed to software updates on my imac and now can't open my mail. There is a message saying this version of mail isn't compatible with this latest software. I have located the updated mail in the applications folder but it won't open. I don't have the original operating software disk. Does anyone have any suggestions?
Your reply suggests that you have moved Mail to a different location, which (as I said) will prevent it from being properly updated. You cannot use Mail 4.5 with any recent version of Mac OS X. Mac OS X 10.7 (Lion) included Mail 5 and Mac OS X 10.8 (Mountain Lion) includes Mail 6. I'm assuming that you have either Lion or Mountain Lion, but if that is incorrect, you will need to provide that information.
At this point, you will need to reinstall your system. Hold down command-R at startup and reinstall the system right on top of the old one. This should not disturb any of your documents or applications, though you should have backups beforehand in case something goes wrong. And at this point, with your system in an uncertain state (I don't entirely know what you have done to it), something could go wrong.
You will also want to delete the old copy of Mail 4.5, wherever that is. You can't use it.
In the future, do not move any of the preinstalled applications. Leave them where they are.
