New to Java:   Help Needed

Hi,
I am writing a utility to monitor all the objects created by my application. I want to be able to get not only values of class variables(for which the reflection package seems pretty useful), but also instance variables.
For example.
public class myClass {
//Constructor
public myClass(int i) {
// another class instantiates this one
myClass mc = new myClass(10);
myClass mc1 = new myClass(20);
I need to keep track of the the handles mc and mc1 and the
other initializations they do based on the value passed at runtime.
Is there a way to to this. Or even better, is there someplace in Java which stores all the objects instantiated and their handles?
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thnx
cvsan

How do I access private and proteced variables. By default only the public variables are accessible via the reflect class as in the example below.
Class c = rc.getClass();
String s = c.getName();
System.out.println(s);
try { abcField = c.getField("abc");
where abc is a public instance variable. If abc is a private instance variable, the above example fails.
Is there any way to override the data hiding feature of Java?
Thanks
cvsan

    I am geeting a compile error..."cannot resolve symbol" in my main class. The program is supposed to prompt the user for five sets of data, and calculate the tax and total of the entered products and print it back to the screen, it is also supposed to calculate the cheapest and most expensive item and print them back. can someone pls shed some light on this error msg, as I cant seem to get my head around it.

  • New to Java and need help with this program..please!

    I'd really appreciate any helpful comments about this program assignment that I have to turn in a week from Friday. I'm taking a class one night a week and completely new to Java. I'd ask my professor for help, but we can't call him during the week and he never answers e-mails. He didn't tell us how to call from other classes yet, and I just can't get the darn thing to do what I want it to do!
    The assignment requirements are:
    1. Change a card game application that draws two cards
    and the higher card wins, to a Blackjack application
    2. Include a new class called Hand
    3. The Hand class should record the number of draws
    4. The application should prompt for a number of draws
    5. The game is played against the Dealer
    6. The dealer always draws a card if the dealer's hand total is <= 17
    7. Prompt the player after each hand if he wants to quit
    8. Display the total games won by the dealer and total and the total games wond by the player after each hand
    9. Display all of the dealer's and player's cards at the
    end of each hand
    10. Player has the option of drawing an additional card after the first two cards
    11. The Ace can have a value of 11 or 1
    (Even though it's not called for in the requirements, I would like to be able to let the Ace have a value of 1 or an 11)
    The following is my code with some comments about a few things that are driving me nuts:

    Thank you so much for offering to help me with this Jamie! When I tried to call change value using:
    Card dealer = (d.changeValue());
    I get an error message saying:
    Incompatible types found: int
    required: Card
    I had my weekly class last night and the professor cleared up a few things for me, but I've not had time to make all of the necessary changes. I did find out how toString worked, so that's one question out of the way, and he gave us a lot of information for adding another class to generate random numbers.
    Again, thank you so much. I really want to learn this but I'm feeling so stupid right now. Any help you can give me about the above error message would be appreciated.

    this is more of a jdbc question rather than an internationalization. You might be able to get more help if you post it in java programming section.

  • I'm new to java and need help please

    I have an assignment involves modifying a previous assignment. the code for the previous assigment is shown below.(it was required to be done as an applet this assigment can be an application or an applet) I'm trying to modify this code to read a text file (items.txt) that looks like this:
    item # description price(this line does not appear in the text file)
    001 shaving cream 400.00
    999 razors 30.00
    I need to load the item# and price from the text file into arrays(I have no clue how to use multi-dimensional arrays in java and would prefer not to)
    I need to search the arrays based on the values entered by the user (item # and quantity) calculate the total for that item then create a new text file which has each line item for that order in the form:
    item# quant price per item total(price per item*quant entered)
    also also I need to be able to display the four items listed above after each loop as well as all the previous item number and quantities they selected until they indicate they don't want to select anymore.
    I've been working on this for days and it seems like nothing I try works. My major problems are:
    1. I have no idea how to read the text file and load those 2 items into their respective arrays
    2. I can't seem to create a textfile that looks like text for the output file.

    I need to load the item# and price from the text file
    into arrays(I have no clue how to use
    multi-dimensional arrays in java and would prefer not

    I've been working on this for days and it seems like
    nothing I try works. My major problems are:
    1. I have no idea how to read the text file and load

    2. I can't seem to create a textfile that looks like
    text for the output file.The java.io package has file reading/writing classes.

    First answer: You shouldn't ask multiple questions in the same thread. Ask a specific question, with an appropriate subject line (optionally, assign the number of Dukes you are willing to give for the help). When question #1 is answered and question #2 arises, it's time for a new thread (don't forget to give out Dukes before moving on).
    Second answer: I think you need a Transfer Object (http://java.sun.com/blueprints/patterns/TransferObject.html). It's whole purpose is to hold/transfer instance data where it is needed. Create a class something like this:
    public class ItemTO
        private String _number;
        private String _description;
        private double _price;
        public ItemTO( String number, String description, double price )
            _number = number;
            _description = description;
            _price = price
        // Getter/Setter methods go here
    }then, in the code where you read in the file do something like this:
    BufferedReader input = null;
    try
        input  = new BufferedReader( new FileReader( "c:\\a.txt" ) );
        List items = new ArrayList();
        String line;
        String itemNumber;
        String itemDescription;

  • I am new to Java. Need help-urgent

    I need to write a java program that reads a text input and outputs it one word per line. Also, print the total number of words in the inputtext. I am not allowed to use a StringTokenizer object. Could you please tell me how to do it?
    Thanks

    copy the string you read in to a char[] then
    use a for loop to iterate through the array using print instead of println to write out each letter
    once you come to a space use println.

  • *Basic* Java help needed...

    I feel like a complete novice for posting this kinda stuff, but i figured somebody would take 5 minutes and help me out. My final in my programming class depends on 2 programs, one of which is giving me some actual trouble.
    What I have to do is create a java applet that allows a user to input their weight, select a planet, and then have their weight converted to what their weight would be on the selected planet. However, if the ouput is higher than 60 pounds, I need a picture of the michelin man to appear and the theme from star wars to play. If it is below 60, A multicolored asterisk should be displayed with applause.
    I will post what code I have already made. Please note: ITS VERY VERY BASIC. I may have overcomplicated some things, and there is always more than one way to do something (in my experience). Also, I kinda just converted a temperature conversion applet, so there may be some extra stuff I don't need.
    Please help.
    import java.applet.Applet;

    import java.awt.event.*;

    else if(number2==9)
    g.drawString("Your weight on Pluto would be "+pluto+" lbs",100,150);
    public void actionPerformed(ActionEvent evt)
      number1 = Integer.parseInt(input1.getText());
      number2 = Integer.parseInt(input2.getText());

    }

    I am guessing that you are wondering where to go from here. If so http://java.sun.com/products/plugin/1.5.0/demos/applets/Animator/Animator.java may prove helpful.
    Also I would recommend using arrays of planet names and weight multipliers. It could make your code a lot less cumbersome.

  • Java help needed(PLEASE)

    I have a Question for all you gifted people:
    I am designing a sort of quiz which takes questions and three possible answers from a database(which also holds the real answer).It prints these on the dos screen and I then have a System.in statement which allows the user to enter his or her answer (eg A,B,C or 1,2,3). I need a way of adding up the score at the end!!I was thinking of storing there answers in an array and compairing there answer to my correct answer in the database and if it is the same add 1 and if it not the same add 0???
    How would i write the System.in answers into an array and add them up???
    These are my thoughts on how to do this i would love to hear yours!! And also a help with writing the code for the above system of scoreing would be GREATLY appriciated!!
    thanks everyone,
    james.

    As mathuoa pointed out, since you already display the 3 possible answers to the user, get them into an array and display them on the screen. Then, as the user enters an answer, compare them with the three answers and if it is correct, update the score variable as such. If you want the history of answers that the user has given, then u will have to use a Vector/List/some such collection object to hold the user's answers.
    java.util.Vector answers = new java.util.Vector();
    answers.add(usersAnswer1);
    answers.add(usersAnswer2);
    Then, to get the entries,
    for(Enumeration e = answers.elements(); e.hasMoreElements();)
    System.out.println(e.nextElement());
    //Do something with the answer.
    This is one possible way of getting the answers from the user!

  • Pdf showed in new window. Help needed!

    Hi all,
    This is my first post (but a thousand read), and i want first to thank you all for all the information i have read in this forums for years.
    I have a problem which is giving me more problems that i expected. In my webapp, i want to show a pdf document in a new page of the navigator when a button is pressed. I have discarded the target blank option in the container form because i have others buttons and dont want them to be opened in new windows, just the one that open the pdf.
    So, I used another navigation rule to open a new window. This page have to make de pdf in code an send it to the client. I dont know how to execute that code on the load of the page.
    The solution i am trying is using a poll that only will be called once and in the pollListener execute that code. The problem is that does not work to send the response to the client in the client. Here is the code of the pollListener:
    byte[] file; //Don't worry about it. Contains the file pdf i want to show.
    FacesContext fctx = FacesContext.getCurrentInstance();
    HttpServletResponse response =
    (HttpServletResponse) fctx.getExternalContext().getResponse();
    response.setContentType("application/pdf");
    response.setHeader("Content-Disposition",
    "inline; filename=\"file.pdf\"");
    response.setHeader("Cache-Control", "no-cache");
    response.setContentLength(file.length);
    ServletOutputStream sos = response.getOutputStream();
    sos.write(fichero);
    sos.flush();
    sos.close();
    fctx.responseComplete();
    The curious thing is that if i change the content-disposition to atachemement instead inline, it works asking me to download the file, however, i want it to open directly in the new window and is because of that i use content-disposition inline.
    I am almost killing myself because of this problem. Anyone can help me?
    Thanks in advance!

    First of all, you don't need to do this with a workaround using a Poll listener. I assume that one page has a commandButton or commandLink that is used to show the PDF, right?
    Set the useWindow property of the button or link to "true".
    Set the actionListener property of the button or link to a method in a backing bean that looks something like this:
        public void showPDF(ActionEvent actionEvent) throws IOException {
            //Setup the output
            String contentType = "application/pdf";
            FacesContext fc = FacesContext.getCurrentInstance();
            HttpServletResponse response =
                (HttpServletResponse)fc.getExternalContext().getResponse();
            /* Notice that I don't set the Content-Disposition header - inline is default. */
            response.setContentType(contentType);
            ServletOuputStream out = response.getOutputStream();
            /*  Do whatever you need to do to write the pdf to "out" here. */
            out.flush();
            out.close();
            fc.responseComplete();
        }

    As and alternative you can useString cmd123 = "perl /home/deaddev/test1.pl";Using the single string approach YOU have to do any quoting so with this line no quoting takes place and the script /home/deaddev/test1.pl will be executed.Although that should be true apparently it isn't. I have just run
    Process p = Runtime.getRuntime().exec("perl /home/sabre/work/dev/perl/xxx.pl");
    new Thread(new SyncPipe(p.getErrorStream(), System.err)).start();
    new SyncPipe(p.getInputStream(), System.out).run();
    int returnCode = p.waitFor();
    System.out.println("Return code = " + returnCode);which correctly executes the perl script xxx.pl.
    P.S. SyncPipe is a Runnable that copies an InputStream to an OutputStream.

    Interesting! Even though Runtime.exec() works with a single String, ProcessBuilder fails with this approach! You have to split the argument string. This certainly looks like a bug! Some while ago I looked at the source for Runtime.exec() to look at the differences between Runtime.exec() and ProcessBuilder and found that behind the scenes Runtime.exec() uses ProcessBuilder.
    More research is required.
