New to Pshop, trying to make gradient drop shadow for webpage

I am a newbie, just got Pshop and watching every tutorial I can find but can't seem to figure out how to make this graphic.  This is a background image for one of my websites (where I did not create the graphic).  Can anyone point me to a good tutorial or walk me through how to create this for a new site I am working on?  Thanks, Gary

or... you could use CSS3 drop shadows on the containing element and skip the need for background images all together.
otherwise I would defer to the list just provided... there seems to be some good tuts in there on how to do what you are looking for...
the hickup you will run into is fading the shadow out at the bottom... this will require seperating the fx layer out and masking it off...
or just masking the layer itself since the your background is the same color as the element.

    Is it possible?
I am working with MAC OS 10.6.7 and CS4
    Can somebody help me?

Adding a drop shadow should work fine regardless of shape… As Im a big fan of using styles everywhere I can…
    tell application "Adobe InDesign CS5"
    activate
    tell the active document
set GotNoStyle to make new object style
set properties of drop shadow settings of fill transparency settings of GotNoStyle to ¬
    {mode:drop, distance:3, angle:135, spread:0, blend mode:multiply, opacity:50, honor other effects:true, x offset:3, y offset:3, knocked out:true, use global light:false}
set SomeFill to the last swatch
    tell the first page
make new rectangle with properties ¬
    {fill color:SomeFill, geometric bounds:{10, 10, 30, 30}}
apply object style (the result) using GotNoStyle without clearing overrides
make new oval with properties ¬
    {fill color:SomeFill, geometric bounds:{10, 40, 30, 70}}
apply object style (the result) using GotNoStyle without clearing overrides
    end tell
    end tell
    end tell
You can then edit the object style to make global changes… Sorry my values were for my euro metric head…

  • Trying to do .CSS drop shadows

    Hi,
I'm trying to get a similar look and feel as this website
    Livingsteel.org but can't
seem to crack the drop shadow for the main table/container. It's
the one down that covers the bottom and right side and makes the
    site look very tidy.
I'm trying to do everything in .css from now on and any help
    with this would be great.
    Thanks in advance,
    JW.

Well you can certainly do it with a table (and format the
    table with CSS).
However to do it with divs, I would have a top div with the
    top bar (and
the right corner of the shadow), a main div with the shadow
    on the right
in the bakcground, and a bottom bar with the shadow and a bit
    of the
    bottom white.
    Like this:
Course you can simply use divs to create the dropshadows as
    you would do
    it in a table.
You would more or less have a topleft corner div, a middle
    top div, a
    topright corner div etc.
The more light way of doing this would be to see if you can
    accomplish
the first suggestion by using existing elements (for example
    having the
background of the footer and header contain the background
    and shadows).
There are a bunch of sites around that explore rounded
    corners and
    dropshadows with css and divs.

  • Trying to make a higscore chart for applet

hey im trying to make an highscore applet for a mathquiz applet and i need it to save the users score possibly as a cookie ryte now i am using:
    PrintWriter out
    = new PrintWriter (new BufferedWriter (new FileWriter ("file.txt")));
But this only works on the HSA console, Also if anyone knows how to make an exit button exit the internet explorer that would help to. Thanks alot

Sorry Sabre. Just trying to be a little realistic is
all.I fealt you were a little too dogmatic and negative about the problems the OP might encounter.
    >
Setting aside the server-side (servlet) problems,
here are two questions I have about saving the high
    scores as a cookie
    1. (How) are you going to save the cookie? Normally,
web browsers receive cookie updates and store them
automatically. But since you'll be connecting through
java, that won't happen. If that doesn't happen, how
does the client know (aside from kludging the applet)
what cookie to send along with its request? This link shows exactly how to do it (without the need for WebServer involvement).
    http://www.wildtangent.com/developer/howtos/JSCookiesHowTo/
    >
    2. A year or so ago I spent a good deal of time
trying to fix up URLs and URLConnections so that I
could save and return cookies, since this is not
default functionality. I found that it was EXTREMELY
difficult to both extract the cookie and to add it to
the request. Perhaps you or others have had better
    luck with this.
Right. Applets don't commonly allow you accessto
    the
local file system. You can either report thescores
to the server (assuming you can put a servletthere)
or you can sign your jar file.
You're never going to get this to work either. Why won't the OP get this to work either? One can
easily self sign an Applet jar file and then allthe
user has to do is to agree to allow the Applet to
write the file!Again, sorry. My thought was that the work involved
in learning and implementing either the servlet or
local file system solution is going to take at least
as much time as everything else combined. It is true
that my experience with jarsigner and self-created
certicates is limited, but the times I have gone
through the process, it's just taken me forever. When the signing process is understood this is easy - even doing it manually. If one understand how to use Apache Ant then this is trivial to automate. If you would like to see a sample Ant script then I will post one (actually I use two scripts).

  • I'm trying to make a ring to for iPhone and about 20 sec into the playing of the song it fades out and goes silent. What am I doing wrong? Thanks

I'm trying to make a ring to for iPhone and about 20 sec into the playing of the song it fades out and goes silent. What am I doing wrong? Thanks

Im not sure what garage band is, but i can tell you the way apple recommends making ringtones. Highlight a song in iTunes, right click and select get info. Goto the options tab and youll see the time lengths (write down the ending time) for the start time type in where you want the ringtone to start, ringtones can only be 30 sec long so make the ending time 30 sec later. Exit it out of the info and while song highlighted goto the "advanced" tab at the top of iTunes where you will see an option that says "create aac version". after creating the aac version you will have a duplicate song in your iTunes, change the original back to the correct time length. Take the 30 sec aac version and drag it to your desktop, right click the icon and click "preferences" You will then be able to change the name of the file which will be somethign to the effect of "songnamehere.m4a" you just change the m4a to m4r. you now have a ringtone, drag the new file to iTunes where it will pop up in a new tab labled ringtones. If you cannot change the name of the file when it is on your desktop let me know and i will give you instuctions how to be able to change it. Once you get it figured out you can use any song you have on iTunes to make a ringtone.

  • I'm trying to make a "Submit" button for my existing UIPickerView. Help!

Hi there! I’ve been tearing my hair out and searching the web high and low for an answer to a question I have about UIPickerView. I was hoping that perhaps you could help me out!
I’m trying to make a “Submit” button for my existing UIPickerView.
I’ve coded a 3 column UIPickerView into my app, and it works great. However I’d like to add a “Submit” button and connect it to my pickerview, so that once a user makes their selections and clicks “Submit,” the app searches an existing array for the user’s selected values.
Any help would be appreciated! I hope I explained that okay, lol.
    Thanks,
    Brittany

  • No drop shadow for Opera under Pekwm with xcompmgr-dana.

    Hi,
I'm running Pekwm with xcompmgr-dana and tint2. It works great except for one thing: There's no drop shadow on Opera windows. All other windows (except a couple of terminal emulators) have drop shadows. Any idea why there's no drop shadow for Opera, and if there's anything I can do to fix it?
I am running fully updated Arch x64 on a laptop with Intel graphics.

No the culprit is not urxvt, I think. I tried today 'terminal' from xfce4 and it too don't have shadows...
Someone can reproduce this with any other terminal?
Uhh, one more question of the people having or not the problem what is set the color depth of  X, I think that fglrx only support >16 but I can't make it work with 32 (using 24) someone can run at 32 and see with you get or not shadows?
    EDIT
Ok, I think I found the culprit: ARGB visual (or RGBA visuals...) if a program use it shadows don't work. Try emesene it have a config to use or not rgba visuals,  If you set it (in .config/emesene*/*****) you don't get shadows if don't set you get shadows.
I think this explain the dual transparency/shadow... When I gonna investigate it more but now I have a homework of QFT to do...

  • Cannot Remove Drop Shadows for Icon Labels on Windows 8.1 Desktop

I have a new Dell Laptop with Windows 8.1 and a touch screen.  The Icon labels on the Desktop have black shadows on white text. I have searched for answers and have tried the following, none of which worked.  Is there anything else I can try?
Removed the checkmark by "Use drop shadows for icon labels on the desktop" under System Properties, Advanced, Performance Options, Visual Effects tab, clicked on Apply, rebooted.  Verfied that the ListViewShadow DWORD value in HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced
    is set to 0 (zero).
Made sure that the "Show my desktop background on Start" on the Taskbar and Navigation properties Navigation tab is unchecked.

    Hi,
Have you restarted the computer before checking the results?
Also, I suggest you configure this registry key since HKEY_CURRENT_USER is just a mapped one of current user:
    HKU\S-1-5-21-************\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced\ListviewShadow
Note: Find your user GUID under HKU.

  • Drop shadow for invisible object

    Just an idle thought...
If an object has neither stroke nor fill, is it possible to trick Illustrator
into generating a drop shadow for it?
    Michael
    mhphillips at gmail dot com

    Nope.
The object must have either a fill or a stroke to apply the Drop Shadow effect. You
can try simply setting a fill color to the same as your background color, or white.

  • How to eliminate a gradient drop shadow from a film border file

I have a Hasselblad-style square film border file that I got in an after-market PS action.  It looks pretty convincing, except that it has a gradient extending a little ways into the frame that makes it look like a frame sitting above the image with a drop shadow.  There are two layers in the file, so I think there may be a wat to get rid of the unwanted gradient.  But I can't seem to figure out what it might be.
I sure with I could post the file here, but whatever I try to do to make files permissable to post on this forum never seems to work.  The original PSD is only 2.6 MB.  I tried sizing it down to 450p x 450p to no avail.  The error message said "this type of content is not allowed."  It is only an empty black film border.
Anyway, if someone is willing to look at the file offline, please let me know.  I am not a graphics person, just a photographer.  I would love to get rid of the gradient on this file.  Thanks in advance.
Alternatively, if anyone knows a source for clean, realistic black film borders in digital file format, please let me know.

Maybe just posting a screenshot showing the border and layers panel will suffice.
Use the png or jpeg format for the screenshot.

I am trying to make a main menu but I read some info. and said I have to do it through IDVD and I tried it but can not find IDVD anywhere so I wanted to know if I have to purchase it or something and I also wanted to know how to create a main menu?

depends on how old your Mac is ...
newer machines do not come along with a pre-installed  iDVD (.. and iWeb ..) anymore; you have to purchase a boxed version of iLife11.
if somehow iDVD is installed on your Mac, you should find it in your Apps-folder

  • Drop shadow for images

I've done this easily in Photoshop CS3 but now I'm trying to teach people with Elements 6 or 7 how to add a drop shadow to their images. The help menu seems to think that I would add it only to text.
When I follow the procedure with an image open, nothing happens.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks.
    Mary Lou

    Mary Lou,
To add a drop shadow to the entire picture:
    1. Duplicate the picture layer.
    2. Increase the canvas size. The duplicate layer will be on transparent background.
    3. Apply the Drop Shadows Layer Style. To change the default shadow, open the Style Settings and adjust the various settings.
    http://www.pixentral.com/show.php?picture=1bxVVZCr9XHbMWpqGLbFyTNkpdVsma1
You can also create a drop shadow not using the layer style:
    1. Duplicate the picture layer and increase canvas as above.
    2. Ctrl-click the duplicate layer to select it.
    3. Create a new layer below the duplicate layer and fill with black.
    4. Use the Move tool to position the black layer where you want the shadow to be.
    5. Soften the edges of the black layer using a Gaussian Blur.
    http://www.pixentral.com/show.php?picture=1fUAf62zQNztHfAbEOjTg8DSGaltBl0
In both methods you can lighten the shadow by reducing the layer's Opacity, or darken the shadow by duplicating the layer.
Also note that when you use the Drop Shadows Layer Style, when the Style Settings is open you can use the mouse to drag the shadow wherever you want, even totally off the object (unlike with the Shadow Distance slider).

  • Drop Shadow for text does not work

I can't get drop shadow to work for text.  Every time I click on a text box and then click Effects, the drop shadow option does not appear as clickable and is basically blanked/darkened out.  It only works for boxes/objects other than text but every tutorial out there shows that I am doing this correctly.  What am I missing?  Can you no longer make text with a drop shadow?

I've tried that too... when I go to the text tool and select the text itself the "effects" button disappears altogether and I can't find any other options to initiate drop shadow except through the "effects".
Using the selection tool it's not available.
Using the text tool... it's just not there at all.
