New windows don't open on top?

When I click on a link in another application, Safari 4.0.4 opens the new window at some random layer amongst all my other Safari Windows. AppleScript also reports the front window to be some seemingly random window and not necessarily the frontmost one. Bringing a new window to the front doesn't seem to change the indexes of the windows in AppleScript. This can't possibly be expected behavior is it?
(I've uninstalled Glims and Click2Flash and that hasn't made a difference.)

Why are you opening everything in a new window, instead of a new Tab?
Because that is my preference.
AppleScript also reports the front window to be some seemingly random window and not necessarily the frontmost one.
AppleScript doesn't report anything; it's a scripting language to automate functions.
I get the impression you're not familiar with Safari or Macs in general, as your description of a problem doesn't make sense. We need more details.
(Umm... I've been a software engineer programming the Mac platform for more than 15 years including being responsible for the AppleScript support for a major application. I've also been using and occasionally scripting Safari since it was first released.)
The script:
tell application "Safari"
get properties of front window
end tell
shows that the window Safari thinks is the front window (i.e. the window whose index is 1) is some random window that may or may not be the actual frontmost window (i.e. the one currently visually frontmost in the application). The windows should be indexed frontmost to rearmost.
It would seem likely that this problem is related to the fact that when clicking on a url in a Mail message, for instance, the window is opened at some seemingly random location in the window order. Sometimes that is on top, but often the window is buried beneath other open Safari windows.
I apologize for my previous lack clarity. I hope this will enable someone to shed some light on the issue. Thanks.

New windows don't open on top of each other in Firefox. How can I make that happen? That is, every time I open a new window, it won't open on top of the old window, and instead is positioned to the right of it. I'm on a mac. Please help.

I see. I'm not aware of how to fix this in Firefox. Usually you want to tweak your Winow Manager preferences for opening new windows.
    Example: sawfish preferences for Linux.
Since Mac OS X doesn't have any preferences, you have to use Applescript or another technique. I found [http://amitp.blogspot.com/2006/08/mac-os-x-window-management-spooky.html Spooky], maybe there are others. I haven't tried it, but here is the [http://www.doernte.net/spooky.html Spooky Download and Description].

  • Why does firefox crash in iTunes? Also, in my tool options new windows are to open in a new tab. They don't, why?

Foxfire wasn't connecting to the web and I had to reinstall it.
Since that time I haven't been able to access iTunes and new windows don't open in new tabs

I completely uninstalled the printer and drivers and restarted the computer. I then uninstalled and then reinstalled Firefox 7.0.1, restarted the computer and then reinstalled the printer (from the previously downloaded exe file, because I don't have the CD for the printer). Unfortunately, neither of those things worked, but I did notice that when I uninstalled Firefox, it asked if I wanted to save settings, and I said yes and it seemed to remember the Dell 720 printer in the "about:config" menu. So, maybe uninstalling Firefox without saving settings would make a difference. What do you think? Also, I just noticed in the "Add or Remove Programs" menu in control panel that the icon next to "Dell Photo Printer 720" is a little recycle bin, which seems a bit odd. On the dell.com forum, someone suggested using Firefox 5.0.1, available at a different website. Is this worth a shot or are there other more conservative troubleshooting suggestions to try first?

This issue can be caused by the ASK.com Toolbar.
Start Firefox in <u>[[Safe Mode]]</u> to check if one of the extensions or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).

  • How do I change opening a new window so it stays on the new window when I open it?

When I click on the 'New Window' button, it opens a new window than immediately goes back to the original window. I want the new window to remain displayed until I choose to go back to the original window.

Sounds that you've clicked the Rest button and have created a new profile.
Note that "Reset" creates a new default profile with a time stamp appended to identify it and tries to recover settings like bookmarks and history and passwords and cookies and auto-fill data from the old profile, but you lose data like extensions and other customizations.
Firefox 15+ versions will move the old profile folder to an "Old Firefox Data-##" folder on the Desktop that gets a number appended if you use reset more than once.
If the new profile works then you can transfer some files from the old profile to that new profile, but be careful not to copy corrupted files.

  • Dual monitor - force new windows to always open on primary monitor?

I use my secondary monitor to watch streaming TV in internet browser windows.  When I have finished watching streaming TV and the secondary monitor is switched off, Safari still opens new browser windows on the secondary monitor by default (presumably due to the fact that the last active browser window was open on the secondary monitor).  This is irritating and means I have to switch the secondary monitor back on to drag the new browser window back to the primary display.  The secondary monitor is connected by VGA.
This is a minor niggle, rather than a major issue, but it is irritating nevertheless!  Does anyone know if there is a way to force new windows to always open on primary monitor, regardless of where the last active window was?
    Any help much appreciated.
    Many thanks,
    Ben

After many days i found solution:
Run the client and get it set up the way you prefer, or Open your saved RDP file
On the Display tab, choose a non-fullscreen resolution.
On the General tab, click "delete these credentials", if possible.
    Click Connect .
You will immediately get a local login dialog. Leave it blank and click
    OK .
When you are connected and the remote login dialog appears, drag the window to the desired monitor.
On the remote login dialog, click Cancel . The settings dialog should reappear locally.
On the Display tab, you can now choose fullscreen.
You can now save your session with the Save button on the
General tab, as well as save your login credentials.
Try more times ,worked for me.

It is possible that there is a problem with the files [http://kb.mozillazine.org/sessionstore.js sessionstore.js] and sessionstore.bak in the [http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_folder_-_Firefox Profile Folder]
Delete [http://kb.mozillazine.org/sessionstore.js sessionstore.js] and sessionstore.bak in the [http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_folder_-_Firefox Profile Folder]
    * Help > Troubleshooting Information > Profile Directory: Open Containing Folder
If you see files sessionstore-##.js with a number in the left part of the name like sessionstore-1.js then delete those as well.
Deleting sessionstore.js will cause App Tabs and Tab Groups to get lost, so you will have to create them again (make a note).

  • A new window does not open when I click on the new tab "plus" sign. How do I fix this?

A new window does not open when I click on the new tab "plus" sign. How do I fix this?

Try uninstalling the Ask toolbar and it should work again. There is a compatibility issue with the Ask toolbar and Firefox that prevents new tabs from being opened.

  • TabPlus, new tabs, don't open after typing in website addresses

I have used TabPlus (now called Tab Mix Plus) for years; I usually have quite a few tabs open; everything has worked perfectly until FF updated me to FF8, beta. Today, I tried to download & install version 8, newer than the Beta, but that did not help.
Tab Plus' new tabs, don't open after typing in website addresses; the cursor line to type in the next letter or word remains, blinking. I cannot open anything in any new tab that I have added by pressing down with the right mouse button and clicking on "New Tab (after this tab)."
As this problem did not exist in any version prior to 8, perhaps the developer has to do some updating. If not Firefox needs to fix some bug.
I have been with Mozilla FF since its beginning; it has been by favorite browser, but now, out of frustration, I have been using Chrome.
If you can solve this problem for me, I shall be happy to return FF to being my Default Browser.
    All the best,
    Carole (mhashev, my on-display name)

  • Open Link in New Window Option Not Working in Top Link Bar

    Hello,
We have a 'Popular Links' section in our Top Link Bar for our intranet site that contains a list of frequently used links. Since most of these links navigate to sites outside of SharePoint, we would like these to open in a new tab or window when clicked.
I've enabled the 'Open Link in New Window' option under Site Navigation Settings for each link, however when a user clicks the links that have had this option enabled the content is still loaded in the current tab.
Is this the correct set of steps to enable this content, or is there a better way to accomplish this that actually works?

  • I am using firefox 3.6 due to compatibility with roboform.Firefox keeps crashing and when I click a tab opens in a new window don't want that.

This has been occurring for about 2 weeks.I need a version of firefox compatible with roboform.Very irritating that when I click tabs or links opens in a new window.

Firefox 4.0 up through the latest 10.0 version is compatible with Roboform7 or with the '''RoboForm Lite Standalone Extension'''. <br />
http://www.roboform.com/platforms/browsers/firefox - scroll down that page a bit
As far as troubleshooting your Firefox crashes, start with this: <br />
    https://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Firefox%20crashes#w_get-help-fixing-this-crash
Type '''about:crashes''' in the URL bar and hit Enter. <br />
    # Middle-Click the hyperlinks to bring up each Crash Report page in a new Tab; each page may take a few minutes to load.
    # '''Then copy'n'paste the URL of each of those reports into the message box here.'''
    # We'll see if we can help you figure out what is causing those crashes to happen.
If you can't open Firefox or keep it open long enough to get the Crash Report ID's, even in the Firefox Safe Mode - see the section entitled - '''''You can't open Firefox because it crashes at startup even in Safe Mode:'''''.

  • Why does Firefox open new windows unnecessarily, sometimes opening them on top of existing windows? Is this a setting problem?

  • Can someone help me understand why the search engine will not do anything when I click the search icon or press enter, and why new windows won't open when I click on a link that should open one?

When I type something in the search engine at the right hand corner of the screen it will not allow the search to take place. What I mean is I either click the icon or press enter and nothing happens. I would understand it better if it at the very least gave me a error message. I have also noticed that things like the opening of a new window via a link will not work. An example is I was just on www.walmart.com and when I clicked on an image in order to see a larger one no window opened. I also recently noticed that when I had a lot of tabs open the shortcut menus and menus in general did not load completely or really at all keeping me from saving the pages as bookmarks. I know this could be from low internet speed, a lot of tabs etc..., but I've had many more tabs open than I had then and it worked. Plus all I did was delete or close one tab and suddenly it worked. I then recovered the tab and it still worked even though I was back at the original amount of tabs. I have the latest version of firefox, not counting the beta, and I don't know of any way to solve the two main problems.

Start Firefox in [[Safe Mode]] to check if one of the add-ons is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Tools > Add-ons > Themes).
    * Don't make any changes on the Safe mode start window.
    See:
    * [[Troubleshooting extensions and themes]]
    * [[Troubleshooting plugins]]
If it does work in Safe-mode then disable all extensions and then try to find which is causing it by enabling one at a time until the problem reappears.
    * Use "Disable all add-ons" on the [[Safe mode]] start window to disable all extensions.
    * Close and restart Firefox after each change via "File > Exit" (Mac: "Firefox > Quit"; Linux: "File > Quit")
